What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ubuntu does not include a built-in shell command that turns your microphone into terminal text. The practical approach is speech-recognition software that injects recognized words into whichever window currently has focus. For a keyboard-driven workflow, install vosk-cli-dictation; for a tray-based, desktop-wide interface, install Vocalinux. In either case, click the terminal prompt before you speak, and review any dictated command before pressing Enter.
What “voice dictation in the terminal” actually means
Both approaches described here listen through your microphone, convert speech to text locally or through a configured engine, and type the result into the focused application. They do not create a special Ubuntu shell syntax and they do not automatically know whether you intend prose, a command, or a filename. If the terminal is focused, the inserted text appears there; if another window is focused, that window receives it instead.

This distinction matters for safety. Dictation can enter sudo commands, paths, punctuation, and line breaks, but recognition is not guaranteed to be exact. Treat the output as untrusted input: inspect it, correct it, and only then execute it.

| Question | vosk-cli-dictation |
Vocalinux |
|---|---|---|
| Primary style | Command-line-oriented package and keyboard controls | Desktop application with a tray indicator and settings |
| Best fit | You want a small, keyboard-driven workflow and control from shell subcommands | You want dictation available across applications with a desktop interface |
| Ubuntu baseline | Documented package route for Ubuntu 24.04 and newer Debian-derived systems | Ubuntu 24.04 or an Ubuntu-based distribution |
| Language/model choice | English, French, German, and Spanish are listed; install the matching Vosk model | Choose a language and model size in the application; local engines include whisper.cpp, Whisper, Faster Whisper, VOSK, and Parakeet |
| Activation | Spoken start/stop phrases, toggle, push-to-talk, or silence timeout | Hold Right Alt to dictate, or enable toggle mode in Settings |
| Desktop integration | Uses a text-injection backend; Wayland shortcuts are configured in the desktop’s shortcut settings | Tray and settings integration handle activation and engine selection |
| Network use | Required initially for bindings and a model unless you supply them yourself; recognition can then run locally | Model downloads require connectivity; local engines run on the machine afterward, while a remote API is optional and disabled unless configured |
There is no controlled accuracy comparison between these routes. Neither project’s available documentation provides an independently validated recognition-accuracy statistic, so choose based on workflow and integration rather than an unsupported percentage.

Prepare Ubuntu and your microphone
You need a working microphone and a desktop session that permits applications to inject text. A built-in laptop microphone or an existing USB headset is sufficient; buy a microphone only if your computer has no usable input device. Before installing either route, check that Ubuntu can see the device in Settings → Sound → Input and that the input meter responds when you speak.
- Ubuntu version: The documented package and Vocalinux installer target Ubuntu 24.04 or newer. Other distributions may work, but their package names, audio stack, or desktop shortcut screens can differ.
- Microphone: A working input device is required for recognition.
- Network connection: The first setup downloads Python bindings and speech models. Plan for internet access even though subsequent local recognition can work offline.
- For Vocalinux: The guide lists Python 3.11 or newer and
curlas prerequisites. - Session type: Wayland and X11 use different injection arrangements. You can identify the session with
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE.
Route A: install vosk-cli-dictation from the Debian package
1. Obtain the current package
The project documents a Debian package for Debian 12 and newer derivatives, including Ubuntu 24.04. Its downloads page identified version 0.5.4-beta at the time of writing. Package names and versions can change, so use the current filename shown on that page rather than assuming that an older download remains available.
2. Install the local .deb
For the documented package filename, run:
sudo apt install ./vosk-cli-dictation_0.5.4~beta_all.deb
The ./ tells apt that the file is in your current directory. If you downloaded it elsewhere, change to that directory first or provide the file’s full path. After installation, the vosk-cli-dictation command should be available on your PATH.
Recommended Free Tools
3. Let the first run create its environment
On first use, the program creates a private Python environment and downloads the Vosk Python bindings. The Debian package does not include an acoustic speech model, so recognition will not work until a compatible model is installed.
4. Download an English model
The project provides a command for its small English model:

vosk-cli-dictation --download-model en
You can also download a model from the Vosk model collection and put it in the model directory documented by the project. A model must match the language you select; installing the program alone is not enough.
Start dictating into a terminal
- Open your terminal and click the shell prompt, or place the cursor in a terminal editor. The terminal must have focus at the moment text is injected.
- Start the program with
vosk-cli-dictation. - Say start dictation in English, or use the equivalent documented control for your selected language.
- Speak the text you want inserted. The recognizer types it into the focused terminal window.
- Say stop dictation when you are finished, or use a finalize control.
- Read the entire inserted line. Correct names, options, punctuation, paths, and numbers before executing a command.
English, French, German, and Spanish are listed as supported languages. Select a language with the --lang option, for example:
vosk-cli-dictation --lang fr
The corresponding acoustic model must already be installed. The documentation also defines spoken words for punctuation and newlines; use the command vocabulary for the selected language instead of assuming that an English punctuation word will work in another language.
Control dictation from the command line
The program exposes the same actions as subcommands, which is useful when a spoken trigger is inconvenient or when you want to bind a desktop shortcut:
vosk-cli-dictation --toggle
vosk-cli-dictation --finalize
vosk-cli-dictation --sleep-toggle
vosk-cli-dictation --diagnose
--togglestarts or pauses dictation.--finalizestops the current dictation and copies the recognized text according to the project’s workflow.--sleep-togglereleases or resumes the microphone without necessarily ending the session.--diagnosereports the session type, injection backend, audio device, and model status.
The default trigger mode is toggle. The guide also describes push-to-talk and a mode that stops after a configured silence timeout. Choose the mode that matches your environment: push-to-talk limits accidental listening, while a silence timeout can be more convenient for longer passages.

Wayland, X11, and text injection
Wayland
Under Wayland, bind the program’s subcommands through your desktop’s own keyboard-shortcut settings. The documented injection arrangement uses wtype together with wl-clipboard. The project’s guide describes these subcommands as the supported path for Wayland shortcuts rather than relying on a global hotkey that the desktop may block.
For example, create a custom shortcut whose command is vosk-cli-dictation --toggle, and another for vosk-cli-dictation --finalize if you want separate keys. The exact menu varies by desktop; GNOME exposes custom shortcuts in its keyboard settings, while other Wayland desktops place them elsewhere.
X11
On X11, the documented arrangement uses xdotool and xclip. If the normal backend cannot inject text, ydotool is available as a fallback. That fallback may require its daemon to be running and your account to belong to the input group. Group changes normally require signing out and back in before they take effect.
Diagnose before changing random settings
Run:
vosk-cli-dictation --diagnose
Use the report to distinguish an audio-device problem from an injection problem. If recognition appears in diagnostics but no characters reach the terminal, check focus first, then the backend and the requirements for your session type.
Source installation for development or unsupported package layouts
The source route is an alternative when you are developing the project or using a distribution without the documented native package. It is not the simplest beginner path.

System package names and backend requirements can differ by distribution. If you choose this route, follow the project’s current build instructions rather than mixing files from the package installation with the source environment.
Route B: install Vocalinux for desktop-wide dictation
Prerequisites
The Ubuntu-specific guide lists Ubuntu 24.04 or an Ubuntu-based distribution, Python 3.11 or newer, a working microphone, and curl. It identifies Ubuntu 24.04 GNOME on both Wayland and X11 as tested environments and also lists Kubuntu and Linux Mint derivatives.
Run the interactive installer
Use the installer command supplied by the project:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/VocaHQ/vocalinux/main/install.sh -o /tmp/vl.sh && bash /tmp/vl.sh --interactive
The command downloads the script to /tmp/vl.sh and starts its interactive mode. Read the prompts before accepting them, particularly if your system has multiple Python installations or more than one audio device.
Use Vocalinux with a terminal
- Launch Vocalinux and confirm that its tray indicator is present.
- Click the terminal prompt so it is the focused application.
- Hold Right Alt while speaking, or enable toggle mode in Settings.
- Choose the language and model size in the application.
- Release the key or stop toggle mode, then inspect the inserted text before running it.
Vocalinux is designed to type into whichever application has focus, so the same focus rule applies to terminals, editors, browsers, and other windows. Its local engines include whisper.cpp, Whisper, Faster Whisper, VOSK, and Parakeet. Models run on your machine after download; an optional remote API exists but is off unless you configure it. The repository showed release v0.18.1 at the time of writing, so check the current release information before relying on that version number.

Choose vosk-cli-dictation when
- You prefer installing a Debian package and controlling the session with shell commands.
- You want spoken start/stop phrases, push-to-talk, or a silence timeout.
- You are comfortable configuring a Wayland shortcut or checking an X11 injection backend.
- You mainly need a keyboard-oriented workflow for a terminal or terminal editor.
Choose Vocalinux when
- You want a tray indicator and graphical settings.
- You dictate into several applications, not only a terminal.
- You want to select among several local recognition engines and model sizes from the desktop interface.
- You prefer holding Right Alt over managing command-line toggles.
Neither choice removes the need to focus the destination window. The difference is how you start, configure, and integrate dictation, not where the recognized characters are sent.

Troubleshooting common failures
No text appears in the terminal
- Click the terminal prompt again; another window may have taken focus.
- Run
vosk-cli-dictation --diagnoseand confirm that an audio device, model, and injection backend are reported. - Check that the terminal is running inside the desktop session where the injector is configured.
- On Wayland, create a desktop shortcut for the documented subcommand instead of relying on an X11-only hotkey utility.
The model is missing
The Debian package does not bundle the acoustic model. Run vosk-cli-dictation --download-model en for the small English model, or install a model from the Vosk collection in the documented model directory. For another language, install that language’s model and start the program with the matching --lang value.
The first launch fails without internet access
Initial setup can need a connection because the package downloads Vosk bindings and the model is a separate download. Complete those downloads once, then local recognition can operate without a continuing network connection. Vocalinux likewise needs connectivity to obtain its installer and selected models; its local engines do not require a remote API after setup.
Wayland hotkeys do nothing
Use the desktop’s keyboard-shortcut panel to bind vosk-cli-dictation --toggle or another documented subcommand. Verify the session type and run diagnostics. Do not assume that an xdotool-style X11 shortcut will work unchanged under Wayland.
Only part of a sentence is inserted
Check the trigger mode. A push-to-talk release, silence timeout, or finalize action can end a segment earlier than expected. Speak the punctuation and newline commands documented for your language, and review the resulting text before sending it to the shell.
Punctuation or words are wrong
Confirm that the selected language matches the installed model. Recognition quality depends on the microphone, background noise, speech, and model; the available documentation does not establish a guaranteed accuracy rate. For commands, dictate in short chunks and verify every option, path, quote, and number.
Safe terminal use with voice input
- Keep the terminal focused only while you intend to dictate into it.
- Use a non-destructive command or a text editor to test the setup before attempting administrative work.
- Inspect characters that speech recognition commonly confuses, including hyphens, underscores, slashes, dots, quotes, and numerals.
- Do not let a dictated line run automatically. Read it, move the cursor through it if necessary, and press Enter yourself.
- Use finalize or stop controls before switching to another window, so unfinished recognition is not inserted into the wrong application.
- If privacy matters, prefer a local model and disable any optional remote API; local processing still requires downloading the software and model initially.
What to expect after setup
Once the model, audio device, and injector are working, the recurring workflow is short: focus the destination, activate dictation, speak, stop or finalize, and proofread. The software is an input layer for your desktop, not a shell feature. That is why the same installation can type into a terminal editor or another application, and why focus and desktop-session configuration determine where the text goes.
