You need an active PIA subscription and account. After installation, sign in, approve your operating system’s VPN permission, and press the power button: PIA will normally select an optimal server automatically. You can then choose a location and adjust protocol, kill-switch, DNS, split-tunneling, and automation settings for your device.
The exact prompts differ by platform. Windows and macOS use a desktop installer, iPhone requires approval for a VPN configuration, and Android asks for VPN and (depending on your choice) notification permissions. The steps below reflect PIA’s installation guides dated September 9–18, 2026.

Before you install PIA
Check your operating-system version
PIA’s installation troubleshooting guidance lists these minimum versions:

If your device is below the listed version, installation may fail or the app may not open. Update the operating system first when an update is available. On Windows, confirm that you are using a supported 64-bit or ARM64 edition rather than a 32-bit installation.

Have an account and subscription ready
PIA requires an active subscription. The same account credentials are used for the PIA dashboard, where you can manage the subscription and obtain downloads. Depending on how you subscribed, the apps also support an emailed sign-in link (often called a magic link) and restoration of a mobile purchase receipt. A receipt restoration is tied to the iOS or Android store account used to buy the subscription.
Install and use PIA on Windows 10 or 11
Install the Windows app
- Open PIA’s official Windows page and select Download PIA for Windows.
- When the download finishes, open the installer.
- Approve the Windows User Account Control prompt. This allows the installer to add the VPN components required by the app.
- Wait for the installation to complete. PIA should open its sign-in window when setup finishes.
- Select Log In, enter the PIA username and password supplied after sign-up, and select Log in.
If you use a password manager, paste the credentials carefully and check that you are signing in to the same account that holds the active subscription. An account without an active subscription cannot establish a VPN connection.
Make the first connection
Select the circular power button in the PIA window. The app connects to what it considers the most optimal server location by default. Once connected, the interface indicates the active connection and server.

If you change location while connected, allow the current tunnel to disconnect and the new one to establish before testing an application.

Choose a protocol
Windows supports OpenVPN and WireGuard. PIA’s Windows guide describes OpenVPN as the default and WireGuard as an available alternative. To change it, open Settings > Protocols, select the protocol, and reconnect. A protocol change does not take effect until the app establishes a new connection.
Configure Windows network and privacy controls
- DNS and port forwarding: Network settings include DNS choices and port forwarding. Port forwarding is unavailable on US server locations, so the option may not work when a US location is selected.
- VPN Kill Switch: Blocks traffic from leaving through the ordinary internet connection if the VPN disconnects.
- Advanced Kill Switch: Applies stricter blocking behavior than the standard kill switch. Use it when preventing any traffic outside the tunnel is more important than maintaining connectivity during a brief VPN outage.
- MACE: PIA’s DNS-based blocking feature for ads, trackers, and known malicious domains.
- Automation: Create rules that connect or disconnect according to the network type, such as a trusted or untrusted connection.
- Split tunneling: Select applications or IP addresses that should use the VPN, and define how DNS requests are handled. This is useful when one program needs the tunnel while another must reach a local or service-specific network directly.
After changing any privacy or routing option, reconnect and verify the result in the affected application. A split-tunnel rule can intentionally make an app appear outside the VPN, while a kill switch can intentionally block it during a connection loss.
Install and use PIA on a Mac
Install the macOS app
- Download the macOS installer ZIP from PIA’s official download page.
- Open the ZIP from your Downloads folder.
- Open the installer when macOS asks you to confirm.
- When the installer requests the credentials for Install Helper, enter your Mac username and password. This is the password for the local Mac account, not your PIA account.
- Wait for setup to finish and open the PIA app.
- On the welcome screen, select LOG IN and enter your PIA account credentials.
macOS may display a security warning or block an installer downloaded outside the App Store. If that happens, use the security and privacy controls described in the troubleshooting section below, and make sure the installer came from PIA’s current official download page.
Connect and select a location
Press the power button to connect. The VPN SERVER control lets you choose a location manually. Search the list or sort it by latency to find a suitable endpoint. Select Choose automatically whenever you want PIA to select a location for you.

Set protocol, network and privacy options
- Protocol: The macOS app supports OpenVPN and WireGuard. Open Settings > Protocols to switch between them, then reconnect.
- PIA DNS: Network settings provide DNS selection controls.
- Port forwarding: Available in network settings, subject to the selected server’s availability.
- Allow LAN Traffic: Lets local-network devices remain reachable while the VPN is active. Disable it when you want stricter isolation from the local network.
- VPN Kill Switch and Advanced Kill Switch: These privacy controls can block traffic if the VPN drops. PIA describes the kill switch as preventing traffic from going outside the VPN during a connection loss.
- PIA MACE: DNS-based blocking for ads, trackers, and known malicious domains.
- Automation: Rules can connect or disconnect on a protected Wi-Fi network, an open Wi-Fi network, or a wired connection.
- Split Tunnel: Route selected applications or IP addresses through the VPN or outside it.
Use Multi-Hop when you accept the trade-off
Multi-Hop is available when OpenVPN is selected. It adds a proxy hop in addition to the VPN server. PIA warns that the extra server can reduce connection speed, so enable it only when the additional routing layer is worth the performance cost for your situation.
Install and use PIA on an iPhone
Install and sign in
- Open the Apple App Store and search for the PIA app.
- Tap Install or the cloud icon, wait for the download, and open the app.
- Tap Login.
- Choose a sign-in method: PIA username and password, a magic link sent by email, or restoration of an eligible purchase receipt.
- Decide whether to allow notifications.
Receipt restoration is intended for a subscription purchased through the iOS store. If you subscribed another way, use the account credentials or emailed sign-in link associated with that subscription.
Approve the VPN configuration
- When the configuration screen appears, tap OK.
- Tap Allow on the iOS system prompt.
- Enter the device passcode if iOS requests it.
This approval installs the VPN configuration that lets iOS create the tunnel. Without allowing it, the VPN will not work.
Connect and change locations
Tap the red power button. It turns green and displays the server name when the connection is active. Tap the server control if you want a different location rather than the automatically selected one.

Configure iOS features
- Protocols: iOS supports WireGuard and OpenVPN.
- Kill switch and leak protection: These are enabled by default and can be changed under Settings > Privacy Features.
- DNS: Open Settings > Network > DNS to choose the DNS behavior.
- Automation: Rules can connect or disconnect on secure Wi-Fi, open Wi-Fi, mobile data, or selected Wi-Fi networks.
If the PIA app is unavailable in your particular App Store, PIA documents an alternative using OpenVPN Connect and PIA configuration files. That method requires importing the configuration into OpenVPN Connect rather than using PIA’s own iOS interface.
Install and use PIA on Android
Install and sign in
- Open Google Play, search for the PIA app, and tap Install.
- Wait for the installation to finish, then tap Open.
- Sign in with your PIA credentials, restore a purchase receipt for a Google Play subscription, or request a magic email link.
- When Android displays PIA’s VPN permission request, tap OK.
- Choose whether to allow notifications. Android may then show a separate notification-permission prompt; respond according to your preference.
Connect and verify status
Tap the power button. The app reports Protected when the tunnel is active and Not Protected when it is disconnected. If Android shows a system confirmation before the first connection, approve it so the VPN can start.
Configure Android networking and privacy
- Protocols: Open Settings > Protocols to choose WireGuard or OpenVPN.
- Kill switch: Android’s strongest kill-switch behavior is configured in the system VPN settings. Enable Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN when you want Android to prevent traffic outside the tunnel.
- MACE: This DNS-based feature blocks ads, trackers, and known malicious domains.
- Per App Settings: Exclude selected apps from the tunnel when they need a direct connection or local-network access.
- Port forwarding: Find it under Settings > Networks. It is unavailable on US server locations.
- Allow LAN Traffic and DNS: Network settings include local-area-network access and DNS selection controls.
- Automation and widget: Android provides automation options and a home-screen widget for quickly connecting or disconnecting.
When you exclude an app with Per App Settings, that app will not receive the same VPN routing as the rest of the phone. Check the app’s behavior deliberately after saving the rule.

What to do if PIA will not install or open
1. Confirm compatibility and obtain a current installer
Compare your operating-system version with PIA’s supported list: Windows 10/11 64-bit or ARM64, macOS 10.15 or newer by direct download, macOS 12 or newer through the Mac App Store, Android 7 or newer, and iOS 15 or newer. Download the current package from PIA’s official download page or Client Control Panel rather than using an old installer saved on your computer.
2. Reinstall cleanly
If an update was interrupted or files are damaged, uninstall the PIA app, restart the device, and install the current package again. Sign in after reinstalling. On mobile, remove the app and download it again from the appropriate store; restore the purchase if the subscription was bought through that store.
3. Apply operating-system and security fixes
- Windows: Install pending Windows updates. If another program or security product interferes, try installing or opening PIA in Windows Safe Mode to identify the conflict.
- macOS: Check macOS security controls if the installer is blocked. Confirm the downloaded ZIP is from PIA’s current official page, then allow the installer when macOS offers the security prompt.
- iOS: Reopen PIA and complete the VPN configuration approval. The app cannot create a tunnel until you tap Allow.
- Android: Revisit the VPN permission prompt in Android settings if it was denied. Notification permission is separate and does not replace VPN permission.
4. Check account and purchase sign-in
Use the account that owns the active subscription. If the subscription was purchased through iOS or Android, use the corresponding purchase-restoration option when credential sign-in does not recognize the store purchase. A magic link can help when you know the account email but cannot enter the password.
5. Escalate persistent failures
If the device is compatible, the current installer is being used, and reinstalling does not resolve the problem, contact PIA Support with the operating-system version, app version, exact error message, and the step at which setup fails. Those details help distinguish a blocked installer, a permission denial, an account problem, and a connection problem.

Practical setup choices after installation
Automatic server selection or a named location?
Use Choose automatically when you want PIA to select a server without managing locations. Search or sort by latency when a particular country, region, or lower-latency endpoint is necessary for an application.
Which protocol should you start with?
Keep the platform’s default until you have a reason to change it. Windows identifies OpenVPN as its default and offers WireGuard; macOS, iOS, and Android provide both protocols. If a network blocks or behaves poorly with one protocol, switch under the platform’s Protocols settings and reconnect.
When should you enable a kill switch?
Enable the standard or advanced option when preventing accidental direct internet traffic during a VPN interruption is more important than uninterrupted connectivity. On Android, use the operating system’s Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN settings for system-level blocking.
How should split tunneling be used?
Route only the apps, IP addresses, or DNS requests that need the VPN when local services or work applications must remain reachable directly. Review every exclusion: an excluded app intentionally bypasses the tunnel and therefore does not receive the VPN’s routing or DNS behavior.
