Muse Spark Open is not a normal single-Mac download. The supported local deployment uses MLX across either two Mac Studio computers with M5 Ultra chips and 512 GB of unified memory each, or four Macs with 256 GB each. Every machine must run macOS 26.2 or later, have the full NVFP4 checkpoint available, and connect to the others over direct Thunderbolt 5 links. Once passwordless SSH and the MLX host file are configured, you launch an OpenAI-compatible server on the primary Mac and send requests to port 8080.
What Muse Spark Open is
Muse Spark Open is Meta’s open-weight, natively multimodal mixture-of-experts model. It has 816 billion total parameters, 42 billion active parameters and a context window of up to 1 million tokens. Inputs can contain text, images, audio and video; the model generates text.

The important distinction for Mac users is scale. The model is designed to be distributed across several high-memory Macs rather than installed like a conventional local language model. Meta describes it as the first model in its class to run on a desktop using two Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studios with the latest MLX framework.

| Layout | Hardware | What it suits | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two-Mac cluster | Two Mac Studio systems with M5 Ultra and 512 GB unified memory each | The reference configuration for local control and privacy | Very high hardware cost and a more involved interconnect setup |
| Four-Mac cluster | Four Macs with 256 GB unified memory each | Spreading the memory requirement across more systems | More machines, cables, administration and possible points of failure |
| Hosted endpoint | A documented inference provider instead of local Macs | Trying the model without purchasing and operating a cluster | Provider charges, account requirements, network dependence and less direct control |
Compare a design on total unified memory, the number of machines, Thunderbolt bandwidth, privacy requirements, recurring electricity and maintenance costs, and the time you can spend administering a cluster. A single 256 GB or 512 GB Mac should not be treated as a supported host for the full Muse Spark Open NVFP4 deployment.
Prerequisites
Macs and operating system
- For the two-node layout, use two Mac Studio computers with M5 Ultra and 512 GB unified memory each.
- For the alternative layout, use four Macs with 256 GB unified memory each.
- Install macOS 26.2 or later on every participating Mac. Keep the versions aligned so that MLX, networking and system libraries behave consistently.
Networking and cabling
- Connect every pair of participating Macs with a direct Thunderbolt 5 link. The cookbook recommends two cables between each pair to increase available link bandwidth.
- Use stable host names or local addresses that resolve from the primary Mac. The launch process must be able to reach each worker repeatedly during startup.
- Do not substitute an ordinary network connection and assume equivalent performance; the documented setup relies on the direct Thunderbolt/RDMA path.
Storage, accounts and access
- Reserve enough disk space for the complete NVFP4 checkpoint on every Mac. The model files must be available where the distributed launch expects them; check free space before downloading.
- Create a local user account suitable for running MLX on each Mac.
- Configure passwordless SSH from the primary Mac to every other Mac. SSH keys must work non-interactively, because the launcher starts processes on the workers.
Install MLX-LM on every Mac
Run the installation on the primary Mac and on each worker, using the Python environment you intend to run in production:
pip install -U mlx-lm
Installing on only the primary machine is a common failure. The launcher invokes MLX components on the other Macs, so package availability and compatible versions matter on every node. If you use a virtual environment, activate the same environment before running the command on each system and before starting the server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConfigure passwordless SSH
From the primary Mac, create or select an SSH key and install its public key in the account used on every worker. Then test each host without an interactive password prompt. For example:

ssh mac-studio-2.local 'echo ok'
The expected output is ok. Repeat the test for every worker name in your planned cluster. If SSH asks for a password, confirms a host key interactively or cannot resolve the host, fix that before creating the MLX host file. A distributed launch that works only when you type credentials manually will fail during startup.
Create the MLX distributed host file
The launcher reads a JSON host file describing the participating Macs and their Thunderbolt/RDMA details. Create hostfile.json on the primary Mac in the format expected by mlx.distributed_config. That utility is the authoritative way to generate or validate the host-file structure for your MLX version; do not invent field names or copy a layout from an unrelated distributed framework.
Before launching, check all of the following:
- Every Mac appears exactly once.
- The host names or addresses match the names that succeeded in your SSH tests.
- The Thunderbolt/RDMA interfaces in the file correspond to the links actually connected between the machines.
- The file is readable by the user running
mlx.launch. - The number of hosts matches the physical layout: two for the reference pair or four for the 256 GB alternative.

mlx.launchstarts the distributed job described by the host file.--backend jacclselects the communication backend used for the cluster.--env MLX_METAL_FAST_SYNCH=1passes the synchronization setting to the MLX processes.mlx_lm.serverstarts the inference server.--model meta-models/Muse-Spark-Open-816B-A42B-NVFP4selects the full NVFP4 checkpoint.--port 8080makes the service listen on port 8080 on the primary Mac.
Leave this terminal running. Startup can take time while the checkpoint is opened and workers join. Watch for errors involving SSH, host-file parsing, missing model files, insufficient memory or an unavailable RDMA interface. A successful process that remains listening on port 8080 indicates that the server has started; it does not by itself prove that every multimodal request type is configured correctly.
Call the local OpenAI-compatible API
The MLX server exposes an OpenAI-compatible interface on the primary Mac at port 8080. Clients should therefore send requests to the local server rather than contacting each worker directly. Use the exact request schema and multimodal content format specified by Meta’s deployment documentation for your server build, especially for images, audio and video.
For a text-only integration, configure an OpenAI-compatible client with:
- Base URL: the primary Mac’s address with port
8080 - API key: whatever placeholder or credential your client library requires when connecting to a local server; local deployments may not enforce hosted-provider authentication
- Model: the Muse Spark Open model served by the process
Keep the first request small. A short text prompt is the quickest way to confirm that the server, model path and distributed workers are functioning before you test a million-token context or multimodal input. If your client reports a connection refusal, first verify that the server process is still running and that you are addressing the primary Mac, not a worker.

Use the command-line generator instead
For a direct MLX quantized-model test, Hugging Face documents this command:
mlx_lm.generate --model mlx-community/Muse-Spark-Open-816B-A42B-oQ3e
--prompt "Explain convolutional networks like I am 5"
--max-tokens 5000
This command uses the mlx-community/Muse-Spark-Open-816B-A42B-oQ3e quantization and is useful for checking MLX generation independently of the server workflow. It is not the same model path as the NVFP4 distributed server command above, so do not mix the two names when diagnosing a deployment.
Understand reasoning controls
Muse Spark Open’s reasoning cannot be disabled. For easier requests, set reasoning effort to low when the serving interface supports that control; the default reported in the MLX guidance is xhigh. Lower effort can reduce the number of reasoning tokens and latency for straightforward prompts, but it does not turn reasoning off or change the model into a conventional non-reasoning mode.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose the setting per request where possible. A simple classification or short explanation may not need the default effort, while a difficult multi-step task can benefit from leaving it higher. Account for reasoning tokens when estimating context use: the one-million-token context limit includes the conversation and generated content as defined by the serving implementation.

Memory, speed and what the published figures mean
| Published figure | Condition or qualification |
|---|---|
| 816 billion total parameters; 42 billion active parameters; 1 million-token context | Model specifications reported by Meta AI Research and the model card in 2026 |
| More than 256 GB of RAM required for the 3-bit quantization | Hugging Face guidance; this is a memory requirement, not a recommendation for a particular Mac model |
| About 344 GB of model memory and about 21 tokens per second | Hugging Face test on an M3 Ultra system with 512 GB; results are not guarantees for other Macs, prompts or settings |
| More than 36 tokens per second | Apple Machine Learning Research result on a four-Mac Studio cluster; the test conditions do not represent every possible cluster |
Unified memory must hold the model and leave room for the operating system, runtime, buffers, request data and generated output. A number that barely exceeds the checkpoint size can still fail during initialization or under a long context. Distributed execution lets the supported layouts spread memory across machines, but it also adds synchronization and network overhead.
Throughput depends on the quantization, prompt length, reasoning effort, number of concurrent requests, thermal state, MLX version and interconnect quality. Treat the published speeds as reference measurements under named test conditions, not as a promise for your own workload.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
SSH works manually but the launcher cannot connect
- Run the same host name and user combination used in
hostfile.json, not a different alias. - Confirm that the key is available to the non-interactive SSH process and that no password, passphrase prompt or first-connection confirmation appears.
- Check that every worker is powered on, awake and reachable through the direct Thunderbolt arrangement.
The host file is rejected
- Regenerate or validate it with the
mlx.distributed_configtooling that matches your installed MLX version. - Check JSON syntax, duplicate hosts and interface names.
- Make sure the file describes the actual two- or four-Mac topology rather than a sample topology copied from another system.
The model cannot be loaded
- Verify that the exact model directory exists on every Mac where the launcher expects it.
- Check free disk space for the full NVFP4 checkpoint and temporary loading files.
- Confirm that all machines have enough unified memory for the selected quantization and runtime overhead.
- Do not substitute the command-line
oQ3emodel path for the NVFP4 path in the distributed server command unless you intentionally change the deployment and have verified its requirements.
The server starts but requests fail
- Test a short text request before sending media or a very long context.
- Use port 8080 on the primary Mac and check local firewall rules.
- Verify that your client is using the OpenAI-compatible path and payload expected by the installed server version.
- Inspect the server terminal for out-of-memory, malformed-content or unsupported-modality errors.
When a hosted endpoint is the better choice
A hosted endpoint avoids buying two or four high-memory Macs, cabling them and maintaining a distributed MLX environment. It is the practical option when you need occasional access, lack a suitable workspace or cannot justify the cluster’s capital and electricity costs.
Local MLX is preferable when data must remain on equipment you control, when predictable access matters during network outages, or when you are prepared to administer the hardware. Hosted inference shifts hardware maintenance to the provider but introduces account, usage-cost and network dependencies. Evaluate both options using the same workload: prompt and output lengths, media types, concurrency, privacy obligations and acceptable latency.
Operational checklist
- Update every Mac to macOS 26.2 or later.
- Confirm the two-node 512 GB or four-node 256 GB topology.
- Connect the direct Thunderbolt 5 links; use two cables per pair where possible.
- Install or update
mlx-lmon every node. - Verify passwordless SSH from the primary Mac to all workers.
- Generate and validate
hostfile.jsonwith the MLX distributed configuration tooling. - Place the complete NVFP4 checkpoint where every launched process can access it.
- Start the server with
mlx.launch, thejacclbackend and port 8080. - Send a short text request through the primary Mac before testing multimodal inputs.
- Record your MLX version, macOS versions, quantization, prompt sizes and observed throughput so later upgrades can be compared fairly.
Keeping the deployment current
The hardware, macOS requirement, model quantizations, MLX behavior, hosted-provider support and performance figures can change. The documented requirements and measurements cited here were current in October 2026. Before expanding a cluster or changing a production workflow, recheck the current Muse Spark Open deployment instructions, MLX release notes and model files, then repeat a small representative test on your own machines.
For most readers, the decisive choice is straightforward: use the two-Mac M5 Ultra configuration when you want the documented reference deployment and can afford its complexity; choose four 256 GB Macs when distributing memory is more practical; or use a hosted endpoint when avoiding local hardware is worth the provider and network trade-offs.
