The safest sequence is: select the exact game and version in the Battle.net desktop app, choose Locate the game if the files already exist, protect any local configurations before replacing files, and use the app’s update and repair tools before considering deletion or a reinstall. Blizzard’s server-held player data is not the same thing as local preferences, add-ons, or custom control profiles.
First decide what state your installation is in
Do not begin by deleting a game folder. The correct action depends on whether the files are absent, present but unrecognized, or already installed and merely need a patch.

These labels and paths can vary by game, operating system, and later Battle.net revisions. The World of Warcraft procedure is an official example of the recovery path; treat it as a model rather than a guarantee that every title exposes identical controls.

Open the Battle.net desktop app and sign in to the account that owns the game. Select the game tile you intend to use. For World of Warcraft, inspect the version or mode selector in the game tab before you click an installation button. Retail, Classic, and other separately offered versions are not interchangeable files, so selecting the wrong entry can lead you to install a second client even though another version is already on the drive.

What to verify
- The game title in the left or main game list is the one you actually want.
- The World of Warcraft version or mode is correct before you select Install or Play.
- You are signed in to the account and region associated with the existing installation, when applicable.
- The drive has enough free space for the game and its patch files.
- You know whether the folder contains an existing game installation or unrelated files.
If the app offers Play, the installation is already recognized; use the update control shown in the game tab rather than starting a new installation. If it offers Install while the files are clearly present, stop and use the locate procedure below.
Install a game that is genuinely new
For a first installation, use the Battle.net desktop app rather than copying random files into a directory and hoping the app detects them.
- Install and open the Battle.net desktop app.
- Sign in.
- Select the game. Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 instructions use this sequence: open Battle.net, choose Overwatch 2, and select Install. The World of Warcraft instructions follow the same app-and-game-tab pattern, with an additional version choice.
- Review the destination shown by the installer. Choose a writable folder intended for that game, not a folder that already contains another installation.
- Start the installation and allow the download and file verification to complete before launching the game.
A new installation normally creates the game data in the selected destination. Do not select an existing game directory merely because it already has a similar name: Blizzard warns that choosing a folder where a game is already installed can cause existing game data to be lost.
Safer folder choices
- Use a folder on a drive with sufficient free space.
- Choose a short, simple path that your operating-system account can write to.
- Avoid protected or read-only locations if the installer cannot write there.
- Do not point the installer at a folder containing a different game, an older version you still need, or files you have not backed up.
Reconnect an existing installation instead of reinstalling it
When the game files are already on the drive but Battle.net says Install, use the app’s locate function first. This is the key step for avoiding an unnecessary download and preserving the existing folder.
- Open Battle.net and select the affected game.
- Under or near the Install button, choose Locate the game. The exact placement can differ between titles and app revisions.
- Browse to the folder that contains that game’s existing files. Select the game’s installation root, not merely a parent folder containing several unrelated games.
- Confirm the selection and let Battle.net scan or validate the files.
- Check the game tab. In Blizzard’s World of Warcraft instructions, a correct selection changes the button to Play. If the app still offers Install, cancel rather than choosing a different folder at random; recheck the version and the directory level.
Use this recovery path when files are present but the app has lost their location, after moving a library to another drive, or after cleaning up Battle.net support files. It is not a substitute for installing a missing game.

If you are unsure which folder is correct
- Look for the game’s own executable and data directories, rather than selecting the drive root.
- Compare the folder’s contents with the title and version shown in Battle.net.
- If two versions are present, return to the game-version selector and match the folder to the selected version.
- Do not confirm a destination that already contains a game you cannot afford to overwrite. Blizzard’s warning applies even when the folder name looks plausible.
Protect settings before replacing or cleaning up files
Blizzard distinguishes account or player data stored on its servers from files and profiles stored in the game’s local settings. The fact that a character or other player data is available after installing the client on another computer does not prove that every preference, add-on, interface layout, or custom control profile will synchronize.
Overwatch hero configurations need special care
Blizzard’s support article on accidentally resetting personalized Overwatch settings says hero-specific configuration profiles are saved in the game’s settings. If those profiles are overwritten, Customer Support cannot restore them:
“Customer Support cannot restore these profiles.”
Before you delete, replace, or deliberately reset local files, capture screenshots or short videos of important hero configurations. Include the controls and other visible options needed to recreate each profile. Keep those captures somewhere outside the game folder so a cleanup cannot remove them.
For other Battle.net games
There is no single, universal Battle.net export command established for every title. Before file cleanup, consult the current support guidance for that specific game and preserve any known local configuration, add-on, or interface data. If you do not know whether a setting is server-held or local, treat it as local until the game’s documentation says otherwise.

A practical preservation checklist
- Record custom controls, sensitivity, keybinds, graphics choices, and interface layouts that would be difficult to rebuild.
- Capture title-specific profiles, such as Overwatch hero configurations, with screenshots or short videos.
- Note the names and locations of add-ons or manually installed interface files, if the game supports them.
- Do not overwrite the original folder while you are still deciding whether the app can locate it.
- Only remove files after you have verified what the game stores locally and what you can recreate.
Update an installation that Battle.net already recognizes
When the game tab shows Play and an update is available, start the update from that tab and allow Battle.net to complete downloading, applying, and validating the patch. Do not interrupt the process by deleting the game folder or manually replacing files.

- Open Battle.net and select the game and correct version.
- Start the available update.
- Keep the app open while it downloads and applies the patch. Avoid launching a second copy of the game or moving the installation during this stage.
- Wait for the app to return to a normal Play state.
- Launch the game and verify the settings that matter to you, especially any profiles you documented before maintenance.
An update can change game data without giving you a universal settings-backup guarantee. If a title’s own support documentation says a particular profile is local, preserve it before maintenance rather than assuming the patch will copy it to the cloud.
What to do when patching fails
Blizzard’s World of Warcraft technical troubleshooting sequence starts with low-risk checks. Follow them in order and test the game after each meaningful change.
- Restart Battle.net and the computer. A stalled app process or pending operating-system state can prevent a patch from starting.
- Check the network connection. Confirm that other devices or applications are not consuming the connection, and retry after a temporary outage has cleared.
- Check security software. Firewall or antivirus rules can block the app, launcher, or patch service. Use the security product’s documented method to allow the legitimate Battle.net and game processes; do not disable protection permanently.
- Run the repair tool. Use the game’s Battle.net options to scan for damaged or missing files and repair them. Let the scan finish before trying another update.
- Reinstall the Battle.net app only if earlier steps fail. This is different from deleting the game folder. Preserve local settings and confirm the game’s installation path before making broader changes.
- Address account or permission problems later in the sequence. Blizzard’s guidance notes that Windows 10 and Windows 11 permission issues may require trying an updated or new Windows account if the earlier checks do not resolve the problem.
Do not jump directly to deleting the game directory. Removing files can turn a repairable patch problem into a full download and can destroy local settings you have not documented.
When Battle.net forgets where the game is
Cleaning up Battle.net support files can make the app forget installation locations. Blizzard’s guidance is to use Locate this game or run the game’s launcher so the app can rediscover the existing installation.

- Open Battle.net and select the game that now shows Install.
- Choose Locate this game or the equivalent locate option under the install control.
- Select the existing installation folder.
- If the app does not rediscover it, close Battle.net, run the game’s own launcher from its installation folder, and then reopen Battle.net.
- Confirm that the game tab recognizes the files before starting a download.
If you intentionally moved the files, repeat the same process using the new location. Do not select a directory that contains another game or unrelated data just to make the install button disappear.

Blizzard’s uninstall guidance says player data is saved on Blizzard’s servers and is available from any computer with the game client installed. That statement concerns player data; it does not establish that every local preference, add-on, interface file, or custom profile is synchronized.
Before an uninstall
- Confirm that you actually need a clean installation. A locate operation or repair scan may solve the problem without removing files.
- Save screenshots or videos of important local configurations.
- Check the game’s current support instructions for local settings and add-on data.
- Record the intended version and destination so you do not reinstall the wrong client.
After reinstalling
Install the same title and version through Battle.net, then launch it and verify the settings that were important to you. Recreate any local profiles from your saved references. Do not assume that a surviving account or character proves that every preference survived too.
Choose between locating, repairing, and installing fresh

“Install” appears even though the game is on the drive
Use Locate the game and select the existing folder. Check the title and version first. A new installation is not the first response.

Restart, check the connection and security software, and run the repair tool. Escalate to Battle.net app reinstallation or operating-system permission troubleshooting only after those checks.
The app forgot the installation after support-file cleanup
Use Locate this game or run the game launcher to let Battle.net rediscover the files.
An Overwatch hero profile was reset
Customer Support cannot restore overwritten profiles. Recreate the profile from screenshots or short videos if you made them before the reset.
The installer asks for a folder that already contains game data
Stop and verify the destination. Blizzard warns that selecting an already-used game folder can cause existing data to be lost. Choose a separate writable folder for a new installation, or use the locate function if the files are the installation you intend to keep.

- Confirm Battle.net shows the intended game and version.
- Confirm the app recognizes the existing folder rather than preparing an unnecessary full download.
- Wait until patching or repair completes.
- Launch the game and check critical controls, graphics options, interface layouts, add-ons, and title-specific profiles.
- For Overwatch, compare each important hero profile with the screenshots or videos you saved.
- If settings are missing, stop further cleanup and consult that game’s support instructions before changing more files.
The durable rule is simple: locate existing files before installing over them, preserve settings that the game stores locally, and use restart, network, security, and repair checks before deleting anything. That sequence addresses the most common Battle.net installation and update problems while limiting the chance of turning a path-recognition issue into permanent local-data loss.
