Uninstalling an Xbox game removes its installation files, not your saved-game data. To protect recent progress, connect the console or PC to the Xbox network, open the game long enough for synchronization to finish, then remove only the game. Do not choose a separate option that deletes saved data.
When you reinstall, launch the game while signed in to the same account and connected to the internet. The Xbox save system may download the cloud copy, upload a newer local copy, find that both copies already match, or ask you to resolve a conflict. Offline progress and PC title support determine whether the latest save is available.

Game installation and saved data are separate
An installed Xbox game consists of the program files, updates and downloadable content needed to run it. Saved data is managed separately. Removing the game is therefore different from deleting its saved data in the console or Windows interface.
The safe storage-management action is Uninstall or Remove for the game itself. Leave any separately listed save-data command untouched when your goal is only to reclaim installation space. Microsoft’s Xbox documentation treats console saved data as a separate, manageable item.

Cloud saves are synchronization rather than an automatic guarantee against every loss scenario. Depending on the state of the local and cloud copies, the system can download cloud data, upload newer local data, do nothing because the copies match, or show a conflict when both copies changed.
What to do before uninstalling
Use this short check whenever the game contains progress you cannot replace.
- Reconnect to Xbox network. If the console or PC has been offline, connect it before removing the game.
- Sign in to the profile that played the game. Saves are associated with the account and title used to create them.
- Launch the game once. This gives the platform an opportunity to process an outstanding save synchronization.
- Wait for synchronization to finish. The exact indicator differs by title and dashboard version. Do not shut down, switch devices or uninstall while a sync is still in progress.
- Close the game normally. A clean exit lets the platform complete any upload that occurs when a title ends.
- Choose only the game’s uninstall command. If the menu separately offers deletion of local or all saved data, do not select it for a routine storage cleanup.
If your latest play session was offline, keep the game installed until you reconnect and allow that progress to upload. Microsoft’s documented sync flow says an offline session writes to local Game Saves storage and does not synchronize during that session.

Uninstall a game on an Xbox console
1. Bring offline progress online
Connect the console to Xbox network and start the game if there is any chance that you played offline. Let the save process complete before returning to the dashboard. If the console cannot connect, postpone the uninstall unless you have independently preserved the local progress; removing the installation before reconnection can leave newer offline progress unavailable to the cloud.
2. Open the game-management menu
- Open My games & apps.
- Highlight the game you want to remove.
- Open its menu and choose the management option that contains Uninstall or Remove all.
- Confirm the uninstall.
Xbox dashboard updates can move commands or change their wording. Select the command that removes the installation, not a command specifically labeled for saved data.
3. Leave saved-data controls alone
Some Xbox screens expose local save-data management next to the game’s installation controls. That is a different operation. Deleting console save data does not necessarily erase the cloud copy, and Microsoft’s developer documentation says cloud data can synchronize back at the next launch. However, deleting the local copy can remove the only copy of progress that never finished uploading and can make recovery harder. For an ordinary uninstall, do not delete it.
Reinstall on Xbox One or another Xbox console
Find the title again
- Open My games & apps.
- Open Full library and then Owned games, or use the Ready to install list where it is shown.
- Select the game and choose Install.
Microsoft specifically directs Xbox One users to My games & apps > Ready to install for owned games that are not currently installed. The list depends on the account used to buy or claim the title, so check that you are signed in to the correct profile.

Start the game and allow the save to sync
After installation, launch the title while connected to Xbox network and signed in to the same profile. The platform compares local and cloud data before play. A matching pair requires no action; a cloud copy that is newer can download, and a newer local copy can upload.
Do not immediately begin a new game if the title is still synchronizing. Wait until the process completes so that you do not overwrite the progress you intended to recover.
Install or uninstall Xbox games on a Windows PC
Install from the Xbox PC app
The Xbox PC app manages purchased and Game Pass games that it supports. Open the app, sign in to the account that owns the game or has the applicable subscription, open your library, select the title and choose its install command. The available button and library sections can change with app updates.
Install from Microsoft Store
For a title obtained through Microsoft Store, open the Store’s Library, locate the owned game and select Install. If it is missing, verify the account, device compatibility and whether the title is available for Windows.

Use the uninstall control in the Xbox app or Microsoft Store experience when it is provided. You can also use the Windows system path: open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the game, open its three-dot menu and choose Uninstall. The exact labels vary by Windows version and by how the game was installed.
Do not manually delete folders in protected Windows app locations or game-specific save directories unless the game’s own support instructions require it. Microsoft’s Game Saves guidance shows that PC save locations and synchronization behavior are title-dependent; deleting files by hand can remove a local copy before it has synchronized.
Check the account and entitlement first
A reinstall does not restore access by itself. Use the Microsoft/Xbox account that purchased the game, redeemed it, or has the active Game Pass entitlement. A family member’s profile, a different Microsoft Store account and an Xbox app account that do not match can make a game or its saves appear to be missing. Sign out and back in only after noting which account originally played the title.

How Xbox cloud saves decide what to keep
When a supported title starts or ends, the save system evaluates the local device and cloud state. Synchronization may happen before launch, after the game closes, periodically during play, or when defined save events occur. The common outcomes are:
| Situation | What can happen | Safest action |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud has the newer save | The device downloads the cloud data. | Wait for synchronization before playing. |
| Local device has the newer save | The device uploads the local data. | Keep the device connected until the upload completes. |
| Both copies match | No data change is needed. | Continue normally. |
| Both copies changed | The system presents a conflict and asks which version to use. | Compare dates or progress and select the desired copy. |
| No network connection | The title can offer offline play; changes remain on the device until reconnection. | Reconnect and synchronize before uninstalling or changing devices. |
Microsoft’s technical description summarizes the offline branch this way: “If the title can’t connect, the user gets an option to retry or resume the title in offline mode.” The wording and prompt timing can vary by game.
Cloud storage is not a recycle bin for every possible mistake. If an unwanted local save is uploaded and becomes the current cloud version, the service may not expose an older version for you to select. That is why checking the account, stopping at a conflict prompt and waiting for a completed upload matter more than simply assuming that “cloud” means permanent backup.
Resolve a save-sync conflict safely
A conflict means the local device and cloud service both contain changes that are not the same. It commonly appears after playing offline, using more than one console or PC, or launching the title on another device before the first device finished uploading.
- Stop and read the choices. Do not select the first button just to make the prompt disappear.
- Identify the copy with the wanted progress. Prompts may label choices as local, console, cloud or by a date and device. Compare the chapter, level, inventory or last-played time when the game shows those details.
- Choose that copy. Selecting the desired version tells the platform which data to retain for the next synchronization.
- Do not launch the game on another device while the decision is pending. A new save can create another divergence.
- After the prompt closes, allow synchronization to finish before playing.
If the prompt does not expose enough information to tell which copy is current, cancel if possible and keep the installation intact while you determine where the latest progress was made. Deleting local data at this stage can remove the copy you needed.

Xbox cloud saves are not universal across every Windows game that appears in an Xbox-related library. Microsoft’s GDK documentation describes a no-code PC cloud-save path that synchronizes before launch and uploads after the title ends or under other defined conditions, but the game must opt in, use the supported configuration and launch as a packaged build.
As a result, a PC game may have a local save without a cloud copy, or may synchronize differently from a console version. If a save does not return after reinstalling, check the individual game’s support information before deleting any remaining local files. Do not assume that a Windows title has the same cloud behavior as its Xbox console edition.

PC save folders can also differ by title and edition. A Steam release, a Microsoft Store release and an Xbox app release may use different paths or synchronization services even when the game name is identical. Avoid copying files between editions unless the developer explicitly documents that procedure, and never overwrite a functioning local folder while troubleshooting a cloud problem.
Local installation or cloud streaming on Windows?
Windows offers two different ways to access some Xbox games: install the files locally or stream a supported title. They solve different problems.
| Consideration | Local installation | Cloud streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | Uses local drive space for the game and updates. | Avoids waiting for a full installation and uses little local game storage. |
| Offline access | Can support offline play when the title and account requirements permit it. | Requires an active connection during play. |
| Time before playing | Requires download and installation time. | Can start sooner once the service connects. |
| Hardware use | Uses the PC’s local hardware for rendering. | Rendering and availability depend on the streaming service. |
| Eligibility | Depends on ownership, subscription and Windows/device compatibility. | Also depends on the title, plan, device and region supporting streaming. |
Streaming can help when disk space is limited, but it is not a replacement for a local save backup or a guarantee that every title is available. Check the game and service eligibility shown for your account and region. Streaming also does not make an offline session possible; if your connection drops, the service may stop the session even though a locally installed game could continue in an approved offline mode.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting after uninstalling or reinstalling
The game is not in the library
- On Xbox One, check My games & apps > Ready to install.
- On Windows, check the Microsoft Store Library and the Xbox PC app library.
- Confirm that you are using the account that owns the game or subscription entitlement.
- Check device compatibility and whether the title is available for your Windows edition or region.
- If the game was removed from a subscription catalog, verify that you purchased it or that the subscription still includes it.
The game reinstalls but progress is missing
- Confirm that the same Xbox/Microsoft account and gamer profile are signed in.
- Connect to the network and relaunch the title to trigger synchronization.
- Wait at the sync screen instead of starting a new save immediately.
- Consider whether your last session was offline; reconnecting is required before that local progress can upload.
- On PC, verify that the title actually supports the required cloud-save configuration.
- Check whether you installed a different edition, platform build or region version than the one that created the save.
Synchronization is stuck or repeatedly fails
- Keep the game installed while checking the network connection.
- Retry the sync when the title offers that option rather than choosing offline mode again.
- Restart the game only after the platform has finished or clearly failed the current attempt.
- If the issue affects only one title, consult that game’s support instructions; PC save implementation is controlled by the title.
- Do not clear saved data as a first troubleshooting step. That can remove the local copy that support staff may need you to preserve.
You played on two devices
Stop using both devices until the platform presents a clear sync result or conflict choice. Decide which device contains the intended progress, select that version when prompted, and let it synchronize before opening the game elsewhere.
You need more storage but cannot risk progress
Use the safe sequence: reconnect, launch and synchronize, close the game, uninstall only the installation, and reinstall later from the correct library. Cloud streaming may reduce the need for a local install on supported Windows titles, but it still requires title, plan, device and region support.
What uninstalling does not remove
Removing the game normally does not cancel ownership, remove achievements already recorded on your Xbox profile, or end a Game Pass subscription. It does remove the local program files, installed updates and any locally installed add-ons associated with that installation. Downloadable content may need to be redownloaded or re-enabled after reinstalling, depending on the title.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will uninstalling an Xbox game delete my saves?
Normally, no. Uninstalling removes the game installation. Saved data is managed separately. Do not select a separate local-save or all-save deletion command when you only want to free storage.
Will my Xbox saves return when I reinstall a game?
They can, if the title supports the relevant cloud-save system, the latest progress synchronized, and you sign in with the same account. Launch the reinstalled game online and wait for synchronization before starting a new save.
What if I played while offline?
Offline changes remain in local Game Saves storage until the device reconnects. Keep the game installed, reconnect, launch it and allow synchronization to finish before uninstalling or moving to another device.
What should I do if Xbox shows a save-sync conflict?
Stop and compare the local and cloud choices. Use dates, device labels or in-game progress to identify the copy you want, select that version, and wait for the resulting synchronization. Do not dismiss the prompt without checking.
Does deleting console save data erase the cloud copy?
Microsoft’s developer documentation says deleting console save data does not necessarily remove the cloud copy and that it may sync back later. It can still destroy an unsynchronized local save, so do not delete it as part of a routine uninstall.
Are Xbox PC saves always in the cloud?
No. PC cloud saving is title-dependent. The game must support the appropriate configuration and packaged launch path, so check the individual game’s documentation if progress does not return.
Where do I reinstall an Xbox One game?
Open My games & apps and check Full library, Owned games or Ready to install. Use the account that owns or claims the title.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Can cloud streaming replace installing a game?
For supported Windows titles, streaming can avoid a full download and reduce local storage use. It requires an active connection and depends on the title, plan, device and region, so it does not work for every game or provide offline play.
The Bottom Line
To uninstall without losing progress, synchronize first, stay signed in to the correct account, remove only the game installation, and leave saved-data controls alone. Reinstall from your Xbox or Windows library, connect before the first launch, and resolve any local-versus-cloud prompt in favor of the copy containing the progress you want.
