To install the Xbox app on a Windows PC, first open Start and search for Xbox. Microsoft says the app is pre-installed on most Windows 11 devices, so you may not need to download anything. If it is not listed, install it through the official Xbox PC app page or Microsoft Store, then open it and sign in with the Microsoft account you want to use for Xbox.

What you need before installing
A Windows PC and access to the official installer
You need a Windows computer on which you are allowed to install apps. On a personal PC, that normally means you can use Microsoft Store or the official Xbox PC app page. A work, school or otherwise managed computer may have Store access or app installation restricted by an administrator.
A Microsoft account
The Xbox app uses a Microsoft account for sign-in and Xbox services. Decide which account should own your Xbox profile, purchases and subscriptions before you complete setup. Signing into Windows with a local account can also affect whether Microsoft Store is available.
No Game Pass subscription is required
Installing the app, signing in and browsing its interface do not require Game Pass. You need an appropriate purchase, license or subscription only for games and services that require one. If you later choose Game Pass, review the current plan terms and regional availability in the app because those details can change.

- Open the Start menu.
- Type Xbox in the search box.
- Look for the Xbox app in the results and open it if it appears.
If Xbox opens, skip the download steps and continue with sign-in. You can pin it to Start or the taskbar after it launches if you want faster access. If the search returns no Xbox app, install it using one of the official routes below.
How to install the Xbox app on Windows
Option 1: Use the official Xbox PC app page
- Open a web browser and go to Microsoft’s official Xbox PC app page.
- Choose the download or install control presented for your Windows device.
- Follow the prompts that hand the installation to Windows or Microsoft Store.
- When installation finishes, open Start, search for Xbox, and launch the app.
Use Microsoft’s official page rather than an unofficial download site. Third-party installers can be outdated, altered or packaged with software you did not request.

Option 2: Install it from Microsoft Store
- Open Start and search for Microsoft Store.
- Open Store and search for Xbox.
- Select the Xbox app listing published through Microsoft’s Store.
- Select the Get, Install or equivalent control shown for your device.
- Wait for Windows to download and install the app.
- Open Start, search for Xbox, and launch it.
Store labels can differ by account, Windows build and whether the app is already associated with the device. If you do not see an install control, work through the troubleshooting section instead of downloading a random installer.
Option 3: Find it in Microsoft Store’s My Library
Microsoft’s Store guidance also describes installing apps from My Library. Open Microsoft Store, select the library area, locate Xbox among your apps, and use the install control shown there. This is useful when the app was previously associated with your Microsoft account or device but is no longer present in Start.

How to sign in and complete first-time setup
- Open Start, search for Xbox, and launch the app.
- When prompted, choose Sign in.
- Enter the Microsoft account you intend to use with Xbox.
- Complete any identity verification or account prompts shown by Microsoft.
- Allow the app to finish loading your profile and library.
Use the same Microsoft account consistently. Signing into a different account can make your expected purchases, subscriptions, friends or saved entitlements appear to be missing even though the installation itself succeeded.
If Windows presents more than one account or asks whether to use an account across Microsoft apps, read the prompt carefully before accepting. The account used for Store installation and the account used for Xbox services should be the ones you intend to keep using.
What to do inside the Xbox app after sign-in
Browse the library and discover games
Use the app’s library and discovery areas to see games associated with your account, identify available downloads and open product pages. A game can appear in the catalog without being included in your account, region or current subscription, so check the product page before starting a download.

Install and launch a PC game
- Open the game’s page in the Xbox app.
- Check the ownership, purchase or subscription status shown for your account.
- Select the install control if the game is available to your PC.
- Choose any location or permissions requested by Windows.
- Wait for the download to finish, then select Play or Launch.
Installation availability depends on the title and device. The Xbox app is a hub; it does not override a game’s hardware, operating-system, regional or account requirements.

Use social and chat features
Xbox describes social and chat functions in the PC app. The exact controls visible to you depend on your account, privacy settings and the current app version. Review those settings if you do not want contacts to find you, message you or see your activity.
Understand cloud gaming
The app can present cloud gaming for supported console games, but this is not the same as installing every console title on Windows. Cloud gaming requires a supported game, service entitlement, compatible device and availability in your region. If a cloud option is absent, that can be a normal availability difference rather than an installation failure.
Do you need Game Pass to use the Xbox app?
No. You can install the Xbox app, sign in, browse its catalog and manage eligible games without subscribing to Game Pass. Game Pass is an optional next step for readers who want access to the games and services included in a current plan.

What to do if you cannot find Xbox
Search Start again
Search for both Xbox and Microsoft Store. If Xbox is already installed, Start search is the simplest way to open it. If Store appears, use it to search for the app and install it.
Check whether Store is available for your Windows account
Microsoft says Store may not be available when Windows is signed in with a local account. Switch to or add a Microsoft account if that is appropriate for your PC, then check Start again.
Check for device management
On a work or school PC, an administrator may have disabled Microsoft Store or blocked app installation. You cannot reliably bypass that policy with an unofficial installer. Ask the organization’s administrator whether Xbox is permitted and whether they can install or approve it.
How to fix a blocked or failed Store installation
Confirm the account
Make sure Microsoft Store and the Xbox app are using the account you intend to use. An account mismatch can prevent authorization or make an app appear unavailable.
Restart after Windows updates
If Windows installed an update recently, restart the PC before trying again. A pending restart can leave Store components or app services in an incomplete state.
Check compatibility and regional availability
Microsoft identifies compatibility, regional availability, family settings and account authorization as possible reasons an install option may be missing or blocked. Confirm that the device is eligible, the app is offered in your region, and family controls are not preventing the installation.
Reset Microsoft Store with wsreset.exe
- Open Start and type
wsreset.exe. - Run the command shown by Windows.
- Wait while Store cache data is reset and the Store window opens or returns control to Windows.
- Search for Xbox again and retry the installation.
Microsoft documents wsreset.exe as a Store troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix. Resetting the cache does not change which apps your account, region or administrator allows.
Retry from the official route
After checking the account, restarting and resetting Store, try the official Xbox PC app page or Microsoft Store once more. Avoid downloading installers from file-sharing sites or other unofficial sources.

When family settings affect installation
Family restrictions can limit Store purchases, downloads or access to content. If the install control is unavailable on a supervised account, the family organizer may need to review the relevant permission. The exact setting names can vary, so use the controls presented in Microsoft account and Windows family settings rather than relying on an old tutorial.
When a work or school computer blocks the app
Managed devices can enforce policies that personal computers do not. Store may be disabled, Xbox may be blocked, or installation rights may be limited to administrators. Contact the organization’s help desk with the app name and the message shown by Windows. Do not remove management controls or use an unofficial package to work around them.
After installation: a practical setup checklist
- Xbox opens from Start without an error.
- You are signed into the intended Microsoft account.
- Your profile and expected library or entitlements appear.
- The app can display a game page and its correct availability for your account.
- You understand whether a title requires a purchase, subscription or separate entitlement.
- Family and privacy settings match how you want to use social and chat features.
- Windows has been restarted if an update was installed immediately before setup.
When to contact Microsoft
If the official installation routes fail after you verify the account, restart Windows, check compatibility and region, review family or device-management restrictions, and try the documented Store reset, use Microsoft Support or Xbox Support. Include the exact error message, Windows edition and version if shown, whether the PC is managed, and which account is signed in. Support can determine whether the problem is with Store authorization, device compatibility, regional availability or the Xbox service itself.
