The project is a fan modification for the Steam version of Tales of Symphonia. The project team announced an open beta for October 11, 2026. It describes the planned overhaul as restoring or collecting content, aiming for 60 FPS, and offering optional quality-of-life features. It does not confirm a final download location, exact supported game build, complete file list, destinations, operating-system support, or compatibility with other mods. Until the release documentation supplies those details, no complete, verified walkthrough is available.
How to prepare for the beta
- Install the correct game. The announcement targets the Steam PC version. Steam lists the game as released February 1, 2016, with full controller support and PC system requirements. See the Steam listing.
- Wait for the project’s release files and instructions. The announced beta date is October 11, 2026; on October 7, it is still in the future. The announcement says to watch the Tales of ABCDE Discord for updates, but the available information does not verify an official package or download link.
- Back up the original executable and relevant game files. The community discussion identifies locating and preserving
TOS.EXEas part of the patching process. Keep an untouched copy somewhere outside the game folder so you can restore it if needed. - Apply the xdelta patch only as the project directs. Use the target executable, game build, and patching utility version specified by the mod authors. The announcement does not establish the required game build or patcher version, so do not substitute a guessed version.
- Install the extra files in their documented locations. The announcement mentions additional files but does not name them or say where they belong. Do not infer destinations from another mod’s instructions.
- Change optional settings only when the release documentation identifies them. The preliminary description says a text file may enable options by changing a value from
0to1. It does not establish the final filename or list every setting.
Keep the Definitive Edition mod separate from TSFix
Tales of Symphonia Fix (TSFix) is an older, separate project. Its Steam Community guide describes an automated setup using SKIM64, where users select “Tales of Symphonia ‘Fix’,” and a manual method that extracts tsfix.7z into the game folder and copies default_tsfix.ini and default_d3d9.ini to working configuration filenames. TSFix release notes also contain version-dependent Steam auto-update advice; consult its own release notes for instructions applicable to that project.

Nothing in the Definitive Edition announcement establishes TSFix as a prerequisite. Do not install TSFix as part of the new mod’s setup unless the Definitive Edition release instructions explicitly say to do so. The two projects have separate files and directions.
What to check before launching the modified game
- Confirm the release documentation matches your Steam game build and names the files you have downloaded.
- Follow the project’s stated patch order and file destinations exactly; avoid mixing files from TSFix or other mods.
- Keep your original executable and any files the release instructions tell you to preserve until you have confirmed the modified game launches as expected.
- Check the project’s documentation for supported operating systems and compatibility before trying Steam Deck, Proton, or other configurations. Support for those setups is not established in the announcement.
Official sources and release status
Bandai Namco’s official Tales of Symphonia page links to the Steam PC version. The Definitive Edition mod is a fan project, not an official Bandai Namco release. For beta availability and file-specific directions, use the project’s own announcement and updates; do not treat the preliminary community discussion as a completed installation guide.
