The Arlo Video Doorbell 2K (2nd Generation), model AVD4001, can be installed either wirelessly with its rechargeable battery or on an existing low-voltage doorbell circuit. Set it up first in the Arlo Secure App with Bluetooth enabled and your phone connected to 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi. If you hardwire it, the circuit must provide 8–24 VAC and at least 10 VA, and the breaker must be off before you touch any wiring.

The unit contains a rechargeable, non-removable battery. You can mount it without doorbell wiring, or connect it to an existing low-voltage doorbell circuit. A wired connection supplies power support and can trickle-charge the battery, but it does not create a guaranteed, fixed battery runtime. Recording frequency, selected settings, temperature and local conditions all affect how often charging is needed.

Complete initial setup in the Arlo Secure App
Do the app onboarding before permanently tightening the mount. The app checks the connection, offers firmware updates and guides the placement process, so completing it first lets you test the live view before committing to the final position.
- Charge the doorbell battery and keep the doorbell near the phone and Wi‑Fi router during onboarding.
- Open the Arlo Secure App and select the correct location for the doorbell.
- Tap +, choose Add a Device, select Doorbells & Chimes, and then choose Video Doorbell 2nd Generation.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the phone or tablet. Keep the phone connected to a 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi network; the app will request the network password when needed.
- Press and hold the doorbell’s pairing button for three seconds. The LED flashes blue when the doorbell is ready to connect.
- Follow the in-app prompts to join Wi‑Fi. Keep the phone close enough for the Bluetooth portion of setup to complete.
- Give the doorbell a recognizable name, then allow the app to check for and install any firmware update it offers.
- Continue through the placement and mounting prompts. If you intend to use existing wiring, select Wired when the app asks for the installation type.
Bluetooth is needed for the initial device handoff; it is not a substitute for the doorbell’s 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi connection. If the phone is connected to a 5 GHz-only network, switch it to the 2.4 GHz network before attempting pairing.
Install the doorbell wirelessly
The wireless method is appropriate when there is no usable doorbell circuit or when you need freedom to choose the mounting position. Select a position with a clear view of the approach and a usable Wi‑Fi signal before drilling.

- Use the live view and the app’s placement flow to identify a position that shows the approach clearly without being blocked by a wall, trim or a nearby object.
- Hold the supplied flat plate against the surface for a straight-on view. If the door is at an angle to the desired viewing direction, use the supplied angled wedge between the surface and the plate.
- Mark the plate’s screw holes. Drill appropriate pilot holes if the material requires them; choose a bit and anchor method suitable for that surface.
- Secure the plate, or the plate-and-wedge assembly, with the supplied screws. Keep it firmly supported but do not tighten the final fasteners until you have checked the view in the app.
- Click the charged doorbell onto the mounted plate. Confirm that it is seated rather than resting loosely on the mount.
- Use the app’s placement check to view the live image and confirm that the field of view covers the area you need. Adjust the position or wedge orientation if necessary.
- After the view and connection are satisfactory, finish tightening the mounting hardware and complete the in-app installation prompts.
The flat plate is the normal choice for a straight-on installation. The wedge changes the horizontal viewing angle; it does not replace the need to test the actual image from the final position.
Install the doorbell on an existing wired circuit
Hardwiring is a low-voltage task, but the circuit is still connected to household mains through its transformer. The required doorbell supply is 8–24 VAC with a minimum rating of 10 VA. Do not connect the doorbell to a circuit outside that range.
- Finish the initial app onboarding and select Wired when prompted, so the app is ready for the wired installation flow.
- Locate the doorbell circuit’s breaker and switch it off. Press the old doorbell button to verify that the existing chime no longer rings before removing anything.
- Remove the old doorbell and expose the two low-voltage wires. Do not continue if the wires are damaged, the circuit cannot be identified or the transformer rating is unknown.
- Confirm that the transformer is rated for 8–24 VAC and at least 10 VA. Have a qualified electrician perform this check or any correction if you are not comfortable identifying low-voltage equipment.
- Mount the supplied flat plate or angled wedge in the same way as for a wireless installation. Leave enough access to bring the two low-voltage wires to the doorbell terminals.
- Connect the two wires according to the Arlo wiring guide and secure the connections so that no conductor is exposed outside the intended terminal or enclosure.
- Attach the doorbell to the plate and enclose or cover the wiring. Make sure the unit and mount are secure before restoring power.
- Turn the breaker back on only after the doorbell is mounted and the wiring is enclosed. Check the app and live view, then complete any remaining wired-installation prompts.
A hardwired connection provides continuous power support to the installation, but the product still operates with its battery and may still require charging. Never work on the wiring while the circuit is energized, and never restore power while a wire connection is exposed.

Check placement, view and Wi‑Fi before finishing
A doorbell can be physically secure yet unreliable if the signal at the final location is weak. Use the app’s placement flow while the unit is temporarily positioned. Confirm that the live view covers the approach, the image is not blocked by the mounting surface or wedge, and the doorbell remains connected after you move it from the router to the entrance.

If the connection is marginal, first try a nearby mounting position with fewer walls between the doorbell and the router. If the location cannot move, improve 2.4 GHz coverage with a mesh node or extender positioned to serve the entrance. The published 300-foot (91-meter) figure is a line-of-sight maximum, not a promise for an indoor, wall-obstructed installation.
Remove the doorbell and charge it
Because the battery is built in and non-removable, charging requires taking the doorbell off its mount. Insert the supplied release pin into the release pinhole at the top of the mount. Press the release mechanism with the pin, then lift the doorbell away from the plate. Bring the unit indoors and connect the supplied charging cable.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Do not pry against the housing, wedge a screwdriver behind the doorbell or pull on the wiring. If the doorbell is hardwired, switch off the breaker before disconnecting or handling any wires; the release procedure only removes the unit from the mount and does not make an energized circuit safe.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand battery behavior and maintenance
Arlo does not specify one guaranteed runtime for the AVD4001. Frequent recordings, motion activity, chosen settings, temperature and other local conditions change the load on the battery. Treat any runtime estimate shown by the app as dependent on your actual use rather than as a fixed service interval.
A wired connection can reduce the number of charge removals because the circuit can trickle-charge the battery. It does not eliminate usage-related variation, and a wired doorbell should still be monitored in the app so that a declining battery level is not overlooked.

Keep the mounting plate and wedge tight, keep the camera’s view clear, and use the release pin whenever the doorbell must be removed. Avoid changing the mounting angle by forcing the housing; reposition the plate or wedge instead.
Troubleshoot setup and installation problems
The doorbell is not found during setup
- Confirm that Bluetooth is enabled on the phone or tablet.
- Verify that the phone is connected to a 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi network, not only a 5 GHz network.
- Check that the doorbell battery was charged before setup.
- Press and hold the pairing button for the full three seconds and wait for the LED to flash blue.
- Keep the phone close to the doorbell during the Bluetooth handoff and re-run Add a Device if the app was left partway through setup.
The doorbell works near the router but not at the entrance
This indicates a location-specific Wi‑Fi problem rather than a completed installation. Move the mounting position nearer to the router if possible. If the entrance must remain where it is, improve 2.4 GHz coverage with a mesh node or extender, then repeat the app’s placement check from the final position.
There is no power after wiring
Turn the breaker off again before touching anything. Verify the transformer’s 8–24 VAC output and minimum 10 VA rating, inspect the two low-voltage connections and confirm that the old chime test was performed with the correct breaker. If the circuit or transformer cannot be safely checked, have a qualified electrician diagnose it. Do not troubleshoot an exposed connection while power is on.

The doorbell will not release from the mount
Use the supplied release pin in the release pinhole at the top of the mount, then lift the unit away. Prying against the housing can damage the doorbell and is unnecessary.
The live view is aimed incorrectly
Loosen the mounting hardware, select the flat plate for a straight-on view or add the angled wedge to correct the direction, and repeat the placement check in the app. Finish tightening only after the live image shows the required approach.
