Treat launcher takeover as a model- and Fire OS–specific experiment: identify your exact device and software version, check current compatibility instructions for that combination, and keep a route back to Settings and the Amazon interface.
Check which Fire TV Stick and Fire OS version you have
“Older Fire TV Stick” is not specific enough to determine which launcher instructions will work. Amazon’s device list identifies the Fire TV Stick 2nd Generation (2016–2019) with Fire OS 5 and Android 5.1 API 22, while other generations use different software. Check the device itself rather than relying on its age or appearance: open Settings > My Fire TV > About and note the model and software version. Menu wording can vary by software version. Compare those details with Amazon’s Fire OS device and version overview and the Fire OS 6 developer guide.

A model family does not necessarily tell you the currently installed build. If a third-party guide does not name a Fire OS version or otherwise match your installed software, do not assume its steps apply.
Finish normal Fire TV setup first
If the Stick has not been set up, complete Amazon’s standard setup before trying to change its launcher. Connect it to an HDMI input, follow the on-screen flow to sign in to an Amazon account, and connect it to Wi-Fi. Amazon’s Fire TV Stick setup instructions cover the consumer setup process.

Understand what sideloading does—and does not do
Amazon documents Android Debug Bridge (ADB) as a way for developers to install and run apps on Fire TV. Its example uses adb install <path-to-apk-file> to install an APK. Amazon calls installing an app from outside the Amazon Appstore “sideloading”; the ADB installation instructions describe app development and testing, not replacing the consumer home screen.
That distinction matters: getting a launcher APK onto the Stick only establishes that the app is installed. It does not establish that Fire OS will use it as the default home screen, launch it on boot or wake, or open it when you press Home. Community instructions for Wolf Launcher, Projectivy, Launcher Manager, and ADB-based variations involve additional tools or settings in some configurations. Those are not Amazon-supported universal steps; the reported behavior depends on device and software, and instructions can become outdated after updates.

Choose a launcher method only after checking exact compatibility
Before following a community guide, confirm that it addresses your exact Stick generation and installed Fire OS build. Check which launcher version it discusses, what other app or permissions it requires, and whether its reported behavior includes only installing the app or also changing Home, boot, or wake behavior. Community guides have described Wolf Launcher and Projectivy alongside Launcher Manager or ADB-related steps, but those reports do not establish that any combination will work on every older Stick.
- App installation: A launcher may be installed without becoming the default interface.
- Home-button or startup behavior: This may require separate, model-specific steps and may not be reliable.
- Permissions and package changes: These can affect how the device behaves, so do not copy commands or package changes from a guide for a different Fire OS build.
There is no established universal command sequence or guaranteed compatibility list for launcher takeover across older Fire TV Sticks. Amazon’s ADB instructions support developer app installation; community reports describe experiments, not a supported replacement procedure. No dependable launcher-performance figure or setup success rate is established by these sources.

Keep a way back before changing settings
Before changing packages, permissions, or launcher-related settings, make sure you can still navigate to Settings and return to Amazon’s home interface. The community instructions do not validate one recovery method for every Stick and Fire OS version, so do not rely on a promised universal reset or rollback procedure. If a step is unclear for your exact software version, stop rather than applying instructions written for another build.

Even if a third-party launcher opens successfully, it may not remain the default or consistently appear after Home, boot, or wake. Community reports describe inconsistent behavior and changes after software updates. Recheck compatibility for the exact installed build before making changes, and reassess after an update rather than assuming an earlier setup will continue to work.
