You can mod Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam Deck without reinstalling the game, but the process is different from Windows modding. In Desktop Mode, install Protontricks and the required Windows components, add the exact Proton DLL override to Steam, then place each mod in the folder structure its author specifies. Back up saves, core files, and your original launch options first.
For a safe rollback, remove only the files, folders, loaders, and launch settings you added; redeploy or remove REDmod packages correctly; verify the game files in Steam; and launch once with no mods before restoring a backed-up save. Performance results are hardware-, patch-, Proton-, and mod-specific, so measure your own frame time rather than expecting a guaranteed FPS increase.

What you need before installing anything
Steam Deck mods run through the Windows version of Cyberpunk 2077 under Proton. That means a mod can be correctly copied into the game directory and still fail because its Windows runtime, loader, or Wine DLL override is missing.
Record a baseline
Switch to Desktop Mode and write down:
- Your current Steam launch options for the game.
- The Proton version selected in the game’s Compatibility settings.
- Your SteamOS version and the Cyberpunk 2077 build number.
- Resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate cap, upscaling settings, and any overlay you use.
Take a repeatable performance reading in an area you can revisit. Record average FPS and, preferably, frame-time behavior. This gives you a meaningful before-and-after comparison and makes it easier to identify whether a change helped or merely altered loading behavior.

Back up saves and game files
Back up your saves before changing the installation. Also choose a game-file backup scope:
- Core-file backup: copy the original files that a loader or mod will replace. This uses less storage and is practical when you maintain a written install log.
- Full-folder backup: copy the complete game directory. It takes more space but gives you a simpler recovery path if several dependencies are installed together.
Keep a text file containing the original launch options and every mod, loader, dependency, and destination path you add. A mod manager can help track these changes, but it does not replace a backup.
Install Protontricks and the Windows components
Do this in Desktop Mode before installing a performance mod.

- Open Discover and install Protontricks.
- Open Protontricks and select Cyberpunk 2077. The Steam app ID used by the guide is
1091500. - Configure the game’s Proton prefix with the Winetricks components
d3dcompiler_47andvcrun2022. - If
vcrun2022fails through the graphical interface, runprotontricks 1091500 --force vcrun2022in a terminal.
Protontricks works on the prefix belonging to the installed Steam copy. If you have more than one copy or library, confirm that you selected the prefix for the installation you are actually launching.

Set the Steam launch option exactly
In Steam, open the game’s page, choose Properties > General > Launch Options, and paste this line exactly:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winmm,version=n,b" %command%
The command is case sensitive. Preserve the capital letters, quotation marks, comma placement, equals sign, percent signs, and spaces. A missing character, an extra space, or a typographical substitution can prevent the override from working.
Do not append unrelated options while diagnosing a first installation. If the game already has launch parameters, copy them to your baseline notes and add the required override in a controlled way. When you return to a completely vanilla installation, restore the original launch-options line instead of leaving the override permanently enabled.

Always read the mod’s own installation instructions before extracting anything. CD PROJEKT RED’s general instruction is to copy the chosen mod file into the appropriate game folder specified by that mod’s instructions; the archive’s top-level folder is not necessarily the destination itself.
Inspect an archive before extracting
- Open the downloaded archive in Desktop Mode without extracting it.
- Look for the first folder in the intended path, such as
archive,bin,r6, or a mod-specific folder. - Compare that path with the game’s installation directory. Extract so the resulting folders merge with the game’s existing folders, rather than creating an extra nested directory.
- Check the mod page for required loaders and for a stated game-version or REDmod requirement.
Manual installation is effectively extracting an archive into the game directory. It is easy to make a path error, especially when several loaders use different folders, so a manager is preferable when it supports the mod’s current format. If you install manually, keep an install log with the exact files and folders added.
Install loaders and dependencies before the performance mod
Many performance or engine mods are not standalone. Their documentation may require loaders such as RED4ext, redscript, Codeware, or Cyber Engine Tweaks. Install the dependency chain first, launch the game, and reach the main menu before adding the next component.

Tools that inspect Linux setup can identify missing Protontricks packages, Winetricks components, and incorrect Wine DLL overrides. Treat those checks as diagnostics, not as proof that every mod is compatible.

Install one mod chain at a time
- Install one loader or dependency.
- Start the game and wait for the main menu.
- Load a disposable save or a copy of your backed-up save.
- Exit normally and check for errors, missing scripts, unusual loading delays, or corrupted UI.
- Only then install the next dependency or the performance mod itself.
This staged approach identifies the component that introduced a failure. Installing ten archives at once makes a rollback possible but makes diagnosis much harder.
Handle REDmod deliberately
REDmod is optional for legacy archive mods. A legacy package that belongs in archive/pc/mod does not automatically need the REDmod DLC.
If a package is explicitly REDmod-only:
- Install the REDmod DLC for the game.
- Place the package in
Cyberpunk 2077/mods/<mod-name>/, preserving the package’s own folder and itsinfo.jsonfile. - Enable or deploy it through the supported launcher or your mod manager.
- Allow deployment to complete before launching the game.
REDmod deployment precompiles content into r6/cache. Do not delete unrelated cache contents as a shortcut for removing one package; let the launcher or manager redeploy after the relevant package is removed. Legacy archive mods load individually and may add startup time, whereas REDmod changes the deployment and loading process.

No authoritative statistic establishes a universal FPS improvement for a generic Cyberpunk 2077 performance mod on Steam Deck. A mod aimed at shader compilation, streaming, CPU scheduling, frame pacing, or visual quality can improve one workload while increasing memory use, load time, or visual compromises elsewhere.
Use the same conditions for every comparison:
- Same resolution, graphics preset, upscaler, ray-tracing setting, and frame cap.
- Same Proton build and SteamOS version.
- Same scene, route, weather or time-of-day conditions where practical.
- Same overlay and measurement interval.
- At least one repeat after a fresh launch, because shader and REDmod caches can change the first run.
Compare more than the headline FPS number. Note frame-time spikes, traversal stutter, menu-to-game load time, VRAM and system RAM pressure, crashes, and visual artifacts. Keep the mod only if its target problem improves without introducing a worse one.
How to remove mods without reinstalling the game
Use this order for a clean rollback. Close the game completely before deleting or renaming files.
- Disable through the manager first. If the mod manager or REDmod interface offers a disable or uninstall action, use it and record what it removes.
- Use your install log for manual files. Remove only the mod’s own folders and the dependencies you installed for it. Do not delete files that belong to the unmodified game.
- Check common mod surfaces. Depending on the loader, these can include
bin/x64/version.dll,bin/x64/winmm.dll,bin/x64/dxgi.dll,archive/pc/mod,r6/scripts,r6/input, andr6/tweaks. Remove a file only when your mod documentation or backup confirms that the mod added it. - Remove REDmod packages correctly. Delete only the relevant subfolder under
mods, then use the launcher or manager to redeploy. Do not blindly erase all ofr6/cache. - Restore launch options. Replace the modded launch line with the original line you recorded. The DLL override should not remain after returning to vanilla unless another installed component still requires it.
- Verify the installation in Steam. Run Steam’s file-verification function, launch once with mods disabled, and confirm that the unmodified game reaches the main menu and loads a test save.
- Restore a backed-up save last. If the game still fails, remove remaining third-party loaders or restore the core-file backup before testing the save again.
Temporary disabling with a toggle script
A community Linux toggle script can temporarily rename mod DLLs, archives, scripts, XML files, and YAML files so the game starts without them. Its author labels it use-at-your-own-risk. Treat it as a troubleshooting aid, not an official tool: re-enable the mods before uninstalling the script, then perform a normal file-by-file cleanup.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The game starts, but no mod works
- Recheck the launch option character by character, including capitalization, quotes, commas, and spaces.
- Confirm that Protontricks is installed for the correct Steam copy and that
d3dcompiler_47andvcrun2022are present. - Inspect the archive’s root path. An extra folder level is a common reason files appear installed but are never found.
- Verify the mod’s required loader and Cyberpunk build.
The game crashes after adding a loader
- Disable the newest loader or dependency and test again.
- Check whether the loader supports your current game patch and Proton version.
- Remove duplicate DLLs or old loader versions from
bin/x64using your backup and install log as references. - Verify game files only after third-party files have been disabled; verification cannot make an incompatible loader compatible.
A REDmod package is ignored
- Confirm that it is under
Cyberpunk 2077/mods/<mod-name>/, not directly mixed into another package. - Confirm that
info.jsonis present at the package’s expected level. - Deploy through the launcher or manager and allow precompilation to finish.
- Do not convert formats automatically unless the current extension documentation explicitly says that conversion is safe. Community documentation records compatibility problems when managers convert REDmod content.
A game update broke previously working mods
- Disable all mods and test the updated vanilla game.
- Recheck the exact launch option; updates can coincide with a lost or altered Steam setting.
- Check every loader and mod for support for the new Cyberpunk build, Proton build, and SteamOS version.
- Update dependencies only in a staged order, testing the main menu after each change.
- Verify files if the vanilla installation still behaves incorrectly.
Compatibility is not permanent. A change in Cyberpunk 2077, SteamOS, Proton, a loader, or REDmod can require a new installation path or make a previously useful mod unusable.
Use a decision checklist before keeping a mod
Evaluate each candidate against the same questions:
- What is the target: shader compilation, asset streaming, CPU scheduling, frame pacing, or visual-quality reduction?
- Which loaders and runtime components does it require?
- Does it support your current Cyberpunk patch and Proton build?
- What are the VRAM and system-RAM implications?
- Does it add startup or deployment time?
- Can you identify and reverse every file it changes?
- Does it change game files, add a loader, or only alter launch parameters?
- Did your repeatable test show a useful improvement without new crashes, stutter, or visual defects?
Keep a short changelog after each successful test. It should contain the date, game and Proton versions, mod versions, launch options, destination paths, and the result of your repeatable test. That record turns a future update failure into a reversible change instead of a mystery.
