They are separate installation routes. Before changing anything, identify your PC platform, make a backup save, read the specific mod’s requirements, and record every file or setting you change. Vortex can manage plugins and help with minimum loose-file settings, but it does not generally merge ordinary INI instructions for you. Safe modding is therefore a matter of matching the author’s instructions to the correct platform, folder, load order and save workflow.
Creations and Vortex are different routes
Creations are installed from Starfield’s official in-game add-on catalog. Vortex is a separate mod manager, normally used with supported downloads hosted on Nexus Mods. A mod’s distribution channel does not tell you whether it needs loose files, a plugin, an INI edit, a file in the game root, a script extender or a new game. The mod’s own description remains the authority for those details.

Do not install the same files through several managers or manually edit files that Vortex is also deploying unless the author explicitly requires it. Keeping one primary management route makes it possible to identify, disable and undo a change.
Prepare a safe starting point
- Confirm your platform. The Vortex Starfield extension supports Steam and Xbox versions, but the paths and capabilities differ. Script-extender-dependent mods need special scrutiny on Game Pass.
- Check Vortex versions. The extension documentation current on October 13, 2026 lists Vortex 1.9.10 or later. Its documented LOOT sorting support requires Vortex 1.12.0 or later. Recheck the extension page when you install because these requirements can change.
- Make a clean save. Save in a slot you will not overwrite, and keep an unmodded or pre-change save outside your normal rotation. Do this before installing, updating or removing content.
- Close cloud-sync risks. Vortex can offer a folder junction between Starfield’s two Data locations. Cloud-sync tools such as OneDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox can behave inconsistently with junctions, with severe problems potentially including data loss. If your Documents folder is synchronized, understand that risk and keep an independent backup before accepting a junction.
- Read the complete mod page. Note the required game version, dependencies, incompatibilities, install location, loose-file settings, load-order rules, SFSE or ASI requirements, compatibility patches and any new-game or New Game Plus requirement.
Install an official Creation
- Start Starfield and open its Creations interface from the game’s menu.
- Locate the Creation in the official catalog and read its description, requirements, placement notes and achievement indication before installing it.
- Install or enable it through that interface. Do not assume that a Creation follows the same file layout as a Nexus download.
- Apply any location or new-game instruction supplied by the Creation’s author. Some content can require a particular in-game location or a new character; the instruction is more reliable than a generic load-order recipe.
- After changing Creations, fully quit Starfield and launch it again. Do not rely on a suspended session or Quick Resume state when diagnosing a changed load order.
Starfield Unity’s community guide reports that adding a non-achievement-friendly Creation creates a save fork marked [C] and disables achievements on that fork. Treat this as community guidance rather than a universal Bethesda policy statement: check the Creation’s current in-game labeling and verify the behavior on your own installation before risking an achievement-focused save.

Set up Vortex for Starfield
Steam installation
- Install or update Vortex to at least the version required by the current Starfield extension.
- Open Vortex, install the Starfield extension when prompted, then restart Vortex so the extension can initialize.
- Allow Vortex to detect the game, or use its game-management control to select Starfield manually.
- Confirm the selected folder is the actual game directory: a valid location contains
Starfield.exe. Selecting a parent folder or a shortcut target will lead to deployment errors. - Check that the extension recognizes the game before adding a mod.
Xbox app or Game Pass installation
Default WindowsApps installations are access-restricted. The extension documentation recommends using an external Xbox install location when possible, such as C:XboxGames, and manually selecting the content directory when detection fails. With the example location, the folder Vortex may need is C:XboxGamesStarfieldContent; your chosen drive and folder can differ.
- Install Starfield to an Xbox app location you can access, if your setup permits moving the game.
- In Vortex, select Starfield manually when automatic detection cannot read the WindowsApps location.
- Point Vortex to the folder containing
Starfield.exe, commonly theContentsubfolder in an external Xbox location. - Read each mod’s platform requirement. The extension documentation identifies SFSE as Steam-only and currently unsupported on Game Pass, so a mod that requires SFSE is not automatically usable on the Xbox/Game Pass build.
Vortex’s save page cannot inspect Game Pass save files by default. That is a limitation of Vortex’s save-management feature, not an indication that Starfield cannot create saves.
Understand Starfield’s two Data locations before deploying
The extension documentation describes both the ordinary game-install Data folder and a secondary folder at DocumentsMy GamesStarfieldData. Depending on the mod and the extension’s configuration, files may be expected in one location or the other.

A junction is not a duplicate backup: it makes one path refer to another. It can simplify deployment, but cloud-sync software may mishandle the relationship and cause inconsistent files or data loss. If Documents is synchronized, stop and review the extension’s compatibility guidance before accepting the option. Keep a separate backup of saves and mod files, and do not enable the junction merely because Vortex presents it as convenient.

- Game and platform: Does the author support your Steam or Xbox/Game Pass build, and which game version is required?
- Dependencies: Are other plugins, libraries, frameworks or a particular Creation required first?
- File destination: Which files belong in the game root, a Data folder or
DocumentsMy GamesStarfieldData? - Loose-file settings: Does the author require values in
StarfieldCustom.ini? - Runtime components: Does it require SFSE, an ASI loader or another component that is unavailable on your platform?
- Compatibility: Are there known conflicts, a required patch, or a recommended order relative to another plugin?
- Save requirements: Must you start a new game, load a new game plus, visit a particular location, or avoid removing the mod from an existing save?
- Update and removal notes: Does the author provide a clean-uninstall procedure or warn against updating mid-playthrough?
These instructions override generic advice. There is no universal Starfield load order, INI block or safe-removal rule that can replace the author’s directions.
Install a supported Nexus mod through Vortex
- Open the mod’s page and confirm the platform, game-version, dependencies and installation method.
- Download it using the method supported by the page and Vortex extension. Let Vortex identify the archive rather than extracting files into an arbitrary folder.
- On Vortex’s Mods page, install the downloaded archive and then enable it. Resolve dependency prompts before deployment.
- Deploy the changes when Vortex requests it. If the mod contains files that must be placed in the game root or handled outside ordinary deployment, follow the author’s manual step instead of forcing it into the Data folder.
- Open the Load Order page and verify the plugin appears if the mod includes one. A mod made only of loose assets will not necessarily appear as a plugin.
- Apply required INI edits manually, preserving unrelated settings, and write down what you changed.
- Launch the game, test the affected feature on a disposable or pre-change save, then fully quit before making another change.
Vortex’s current plugin-management system is enabled by Bethesda; older guides that describe a separate plugin enabler as a temporary workaround are outdated. You still need to follow the mod author’s dependency and order instructions.
Loose files, plugins and INI settings need different handling
Loose-file mods
Loose-file content consists of assets that the game reads directly rather than a plugin record. The extension can detect when minimum loose-file support values are missing and offer to fix them. Accepting that assistance does not replace the mod’s full instructions: an author may require additional values or a particular file location.
Plugin mods
Plugins are managed separately on Vortex’s Load Order page. They can be enabled, disabled and ordered without changing the rules for loose assets. A plugin’s presence in the list does not prove that its meshes, textures or scripts are installed correctly.
INI files
The extension documentation says general INI merging is not implemented for regular Starfield mods. If a mod requires StarfieldCustom.ini values, add them manually exactly as documented and preserve existing user settings. The documentation separately mentions INI merging for ASI mods in a changelog; that narrower capability should not be treated as universal merging for ordinary mods.

Keep a dated note of every manual edit. When troubleshooting, you can then remove one mod’s values without deleting settings belonging to other content.

Manage load order without assuming LOOT makes a combination compatible
Open Vortex’s Load Order page after installing or updating plugins. The documented controls include dragging a plugin to a new position, a LOOT sorting action in supported Vortex versions, and a configurable automated LOOT-based option. LOOT can apply known rules, but it cannot establish that every combination is compatible or that a mod’s scripts, loose assets and INI settings are correct.
- Read the mod page for explicit placement rules before sorting.
- Use LOOT sorting only when your Vortex version and extension support it.
- Review the resulting order rather than accepting it blindly.
- Place a compatibility patch after the mods it patches when the patch author says to do so.
- Deploy, launch and test one change at a time. Record the order that worked.
Protect saves and restart cleanly
A load order is part of a playthrough’s state. Keep a pre-change save before adding, updating or removing content, and do not overwrite it while testing. If a mod says it requires a new game or New Game Plus, respect that requirement; loading it into an existing character can produce behavior the author does not support.
After changing Creations, plugins or load order, exit Starfield completely and relaunch. A suspended session can retain stale state, and the community guide notes that a full restart can distinguish that problem from a genuine missing-asset problem. Do not remove a content mod from a valuable save unless its author supplies a removal procedure; disabling files does not necessarily erase references already recorded by the game.
Updating and removing mods
Before an update
- Read the new file’s change notes and required dependencies.
- Make a fresh backup save and note the currently working version.
- Check whether the update changes a plugin name, load-order rule, INI requirement or platform support.
- Update one mod at a time so a new failure has an identifiable cause.
Before removal
- Check the author’s uninstall instructions and whether removal is supported mid-save.
- Disable or remove the mod through the same route that installed it where possible.
- Restore any manual INI values only if they belonged exclusively to that mod; do not delete shared settings blindly.
- Test from the clean backup if the game reports missing content or the save will not load.
Troubleshoot one change at a time

If a problem remains, return to the last known-good state, change only one variable and test again. Avoid stacking several fixes at once; otherwise the cause and the recovery path become unclear.

Can I install Creations and Nexus mods in the same playthrough?
