Windows emulates many non-Arm apps; a native Arm64 build is preferable for performance. Compatibility is not universal, however: x86-only drivers, some peripherals, and certain game anti-cheat components can prevent an app or one of its features from working.
What happens when you run an x86 app on Windows on Arm?
Windows on Arm uses two software paths. An app compiled for Arm64 runs natively on the processor. An x86 app, normally built for 32-bit Intel or AMD processors, runs through Windows’ emulation layer. The emulated program still uses the normal Windows installer and desktop interface; you do not need to convert the installer yourself.

Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ says most Windows apps can be installed and run on Windows 11 Arm-based PCs, including apps that are not distributed through the Microsoft Store. “Most” is important. A program can open successfully while a plug-in, hardware feature, service, or driver that it depends on remains incompatible.

Identify the Windows release
Before relying on an architecture claim, check the edition and version installed on the computer. Open Settings > System > About and review the Windows specifications and device information. Windows 10 on Arm and Windows 11 on Arm do not have identical documented support.

- Windows 10 on Arm: Microsoft documents support for 32-bit x86 applications and Arm64 applications, but not 64-bit x64 applications.
- Windows 11 on Arm: Microsoft documents x86 emulation. Windows 11 version 24H2 includes the Prism emulator, which Microsoft describes as improving performance for emulated applications.
- x64 software: Microsoft’s Surface support documentation describes x64 emulation on supported Arm-based Surface devices. Treat this as device- and release-specific rather than a blanket promise for every Windows 11 Arm computer.
If a publisher offers separate downloads, choose the file whose requirements match your Windows release and device. Do not infer x64 compatibility merely because an x86 installer is available.
Look for an Arm64 build from the publisher
Visit the application publisher’s download or system-requirements page and look for labels such as Arm64, Windows on Arm, or ARM. Microsoft says an app rebuilt for Arm provides the best performance. If there is no Arm64 package, look for an x86 Windows installer and confirm that the publisher supports it on your Windows version.
A Store listing can hide architecture details, so read the publisher’s requirements even when the Store supplies the installer. Check the app’s minimum Windows version, required runtimes, plug-ins, and any hardware it controls.

Separate an application from its drivers
Emulation applies to user-mode application code. It does not turn an x86-only kernel driver into an Arm64 driver. This distinction matters for antivirus components, virtual machine software, device-control utilities, scanners, audio interfaces, specialist measurement equipment, and other software that installs low-level components.
- Confirm that the device manufacturer supplies an Arm64 driver for your exact model, or that Windows includes a compatible driver.
- Check whether the app requires a USB, printer, camera, graphics, storage, or network driver before buying or deploying the device.
- Read the publisher’s notes for services, shell extensions, plug-ins, and copy-protection modules; these may have architecture requirements separate from the main executable.
How to install an x86 app step by step
- Record the requirements. Note your Windows edition and version, the app version, and whether the publisher lists Arm64, x86, or x64 builds. Keep the device model and any connected hardware in mind.
- Choose a trusted source. If the app is listed in Microsoft Store, install it from the Store. For a non-Store program, download the installer from the software publisher’s official website. Avoid repackaged installers from download portals because they can be outdated or modified.
- Select the correct package. Prefer Arm64 when the publisher provides it. Otherwise select the supported x86 Windows installer. Do not substitute an x64-only installer on Windows 10 on Arm.
- Run the installer normally. Open the downloaded file, approve the Windows security prompt only after confirming the publisher and file, and follow the setup wizard. Select the same options you would on an Intel- or AMD-based Windows PC, paying attention to optional drivers, services, and browser extensions.
- Complete required restarts. Restart when setup requests it, especially if the application installs a service or device component. A restart cannot make an incompatible driver work, but it is required for supported components to load correctly.
- Install updates before testing. For Store software, open Microsoft Store and check the Library for updates. For non-Store software, use the publisher’s current installer or its documented update mechanism.
- Launch the program. Start it from the Start menu or its shortcut. Windows 11 will use native execution for an Arm64 build and emulation for an x86 build without requiring a separate emulation switch.
Test the functions you actually need
Do not stop at a successful launch. Open a representative file or project and exercise the features that determine whether the app is useful to you.
- For office or creative software, open, edit, save, export, print, and use any required plug-ins.
- For development tools, build a small project, run the debugger, and test the language runtimes or SDKs you need.
- For communications software, verify camera, microphone, headset, screen-sharing, and hardware acceleration functions.
- For games, test the launcher, rendering, controller support, online connection, and anti-cheat handshake. A game can run in a menu and still fail when its anti-cheat service starts.
- For hardware-linked applications, connect the device only after confirming its Arm64 driver status, then test data transfer and firmware or calibration functions.
If one feature fails while the rest of the app works, treat it as a component or driver problem rather than proof that all x86 emulation is broken.

How emulation and Prism affect performance
An x86 program has to be translated or otherwise emulated for the Arm processor. The amount of overhead depends on the app’s workload, the device’s processor, memory, graphics hardware, and the program’s own design. Light desktop utilities may feel normal; CPU-intensive builds, large media exports, or older software with inefficient code may take longer.

Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Microsoft’s Prism emulator for Arm PCs. Microsoft describes Prism as improving the performance of emulated applications. That improvement does not change the app into an Arm64 binary and does not remove driver or anti-cheat restrictions. Performance and availability still depend on the installed Windows release and the specific device.
When both packages are available, install the native Arm64 build for lower emulation overhead and the best chance of receiving architecture-specific updates. Keep the x86 build when a required plug-in or feature exists only in that release, but allow extra time for heavy workloads and test stability before adopting it for critical work.

Use the row that matches the computer in front of you. Advice written for Windows 11 should not be applied unchanged to a Windows 10 Arm installation, particularly for x64 software.

Why a program can open but a device cannot
The executable may be ordinary x86 user-mode code while its device interface relies on a kernel driver. Windows cannot emulate an unsupported driver in the same way it emulates an application. The result can be a program that launches but cannot see a scanner, audio interface, security token, virtual disk, printer function, or other peripheral.
What to verify
- Search the peripheral manufacturer’s support page for an Arm64 driver matching your Windows release.
- Check Windows Update for driver updates when the manufacturer directs you to use Microsoft’s driver channel.
- Read release notes for known limitations, especially for older hardware whose last driver predates Windows on Arm.
- Test every required device function, not merely whether Windows detects the device.
Games and anti-cheat
Some games use anti-cheat components that require architecture-specific services or drivers. Microsoft lists anti-cheat components among the reasons an app may not work correctly on Windows 11 Arm. Check the game publisher’s current support statement before assuming that an x86 game will function online.
Troubleshoot an x86 app that will not install or run
The installer refuses to start
- Confirm that you downloaded a Windows package, not a different operating-system build.
- Return to the publisher’s site and check for a current x86 or Arm64 release. Old installers may contain obsolete components even when the main application is compatible.
- Check the required Windows version and processor architecture. An x64-only package is not interchangeable with an x86 package.
- For a Store app, open Microsoft Store, go to the Library, and install any pending update before trying again.
The app installs but closes immediately
- Install the latest release from the publisher or Store.
- Restart Windows and launch the app without optional plug-ins or connected hardware, if the app allows that test.
- Run Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and follow its diagnosis. This wizard can identify some application-compatibility settings; it cannot create an Arm64 driver for unsupported hardware.
- Check the publisher’s support notes for services, copy protection, plug-ins, and anti-cheat components that may not support Arm.
A feature or peripheral is missing
Test the application without the device, then verify the device’s Arm64 driver separately. Use Windows Update for relevant driver updates and consult the hardware manufacturer when no compatible driver is offered. Reinstalling the x86 application will not fix an incompatible kernel driver.
The app is usable but slow
- Look again for a native Arm64 build or a newer release with Arm support.
- Install Windows updates, including the current Windows 11 24H2 updates when that release is supported on your device.
- Reduce optional plug-ins and background services, then compare the specific task that is slow.
- For repeatable, heavy workloads, consider whether the publisher supports an Arm-native workflow rather than relying on emulation.
Choose between native Arm64 and emulated x86

Safe update and download practices
Keep the installer source consistent. Use Microsoft Store updates for Store applications and the publisher’s site or documented updater for non-Store applications. Do not assume that a third-party repackaged installer adds Arm compatibility; architecture support comes from the application and its components, not from the download location.
Before a major update, record the working app version and verify that essential plug-ins and hardware drivers support the new release. This is especially useful for production systems where a new application build could change a driver, service, or anti-cheat requirement.
A practical compatibility checklist
- Is the computer running Windows 10 or Windows 11 on Arm?
- Does the publisher offer an Arm64 build?
- If not, does the publisher explicitly support its x86 build on your Windows release?
- Does the app install a driver, service, plug-in, or anti-cheat component?
- Does every required peripheral have an Arm64 driver or an included Windows driver?
- Are you installing from Microsoft Store or the publisher’s official website?
- Have you updated the app and Windows before testing?
- Have you tested the exact files, devices, and online functions you need?

Bottom line for x86 apps on Windows on Arm
On Windows 11 Arm, install an x86 app from the Store or its publisher, let Windows handle emulation, and test the features that matter. Prefer Arm64 whenever it is offered. Check drivers and peripherals independently, and verify the Windows version before making any x64 assumption. Windows 10 on Arm has narrower documented architecture support, while Windows 11 version 24H2 adds Prism to improve emulated-app performance without guaranteeing compatibility for every program or component.
