The safest way to run the unofficial Windows port of Shadow of the Colossus is to build it yourself from the project’s source code and provide your own legally obtained PAL PlayStation 2 image. Do not download an ISO, BIOS, “ROM package” or prebuilt bundle from a mirror. Verify your image, keep Windows security protections enabled, and follow the project’s staged build process.
This guide covers volstants/recomp-ShadowOfTheColossus-pc: a native Windows recompilation of PAL release SCES-53326 v1.00. It is an unofficial fan project, not an official PC release, and its code license does not grant rights to the original game.

What this port is—and what it is not
The project statically recompiles the PlayStation 2 program into C++ with PS2Recomp, then builds a native Windows executable. It targets the PAL disc release identified as SCES-53326 v1.00. The repository is not affiliated with or endorsed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Team Ico or Japan Studio.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It is important to separate the project code from the game itself. The repository states that it includes no disc image, game files, BIOS, emulator or generated code from the game. You must supply a legally obtained copy. The GPL-3.0 license applies to the repository’s code only; it does not give you rights to distribute the commercial game or its data.
#1 Best Overall
- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
That separation is also the key safety distinction. A source checkout and a disc image are different things: the first is project code and build tooling, while the second is copyrighted game data that you must obtain yourself. A package advertised as a “ready-to-play port” may combine both, making its provenance impossible to verify. The documented workflow avoids that bundle by generating the game-specific code locally from your own image.
Safety rules before downloading or building
Use the official source repository
Obtain the source and build scripts from the project’s own repository. The documented path is a source build, not a trusted prebuilt-binary distribution. A third-party executable may have been modified, bundled with copyrighted data or tampered with, so treat it as unverified even if it uses the same project name.
Keep the repository URL, commit or release information you used with your notes. That makes it easier to reproduce a build and to distinguish project updates from files uploaded by someone else. Do not run an unfamiliar installer merely because it has a similar name, and do not disable SmartScreen or antivirus controls to make a download launch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Bring your own game image
Do not use download mirrors, repacks or “ROM” packages that bundle the game. Create or obtain your own legally obtained PAL disc image in 2048-byte-sector ISO format. The project expects the specific SCES-53326 v1.00 release; another region or revision may fail verification or produce an incompatible build.
Keep the source image in a separate, clearly named folder. Avoid renaming it repeatedly while troubleshooting, because the generator can instead be pointed to an explicit path through SOTC_ISO. Preserve the original dump so that you can calculate its hash again after copying it to another drive.
Verify the image before generation
The project publishes this expected SHA-256 value for the matching image:

Compare the resulting 64-character value with the published value character-for-character. If it differs, stop and check the disc region, revision, sector format and dump process; do not force the generator to continue. A matching hash confirms that the image matches the project’s stated value. It does not certify any executable downloaded from an unrelated site.
Keep normal security controls enabled
Leave Microsoft Defender, SmartScreen and your usual Windows protections active. The project material does not cite an independent malware audit or provide a clean-file guarantee. If Windows flags an executable, treat that as an unresolved warning rather than something to bypass. Building from source reduces reliance on an unknown binary, but it is not a substitute for ordinary endpoint security.
Requirements and expected build effort
| Requirement | Documented requirement or qualification |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit (x64). The native port documents Windows-only support. |
| Compiler and IDE tools | Visual Studio 2022 with the Desktop development with C++ workload installed. |
| Build tools | CMake and Ninja. |
| Python | Python 3.10 or newer. |
| Graphics API | A GPU supporting OpenGL 4.6. |
| Game data | Your own legally obtained PAL SCES-53326 v1.00 image in 2048-byte-sector ISO form. |
| Generated source volume | The project reports about 9,000 generated C++ files (project statement, 2026). |
| Build time | The project reports around one hour for a full build (project statement, 2026). This is not an independent benchmark. |
Install the compiler, CMake, Ninja and Python so they are available in the shell used by the batch files. If a command is not found, open a Visual Studio developer command prompt or add the tool’s installation directory to your Windows PATH before retrying. The port documentation does not specify a minimum CPU, RAM amount or disk-space figure, so do not treat an unstated number as an official threshold. You should nevertheless allow ample free storage for the checkout, roughly 9,000 generated files and intermediate build products.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The one-hour estimate describes a full build reported by the project in 2026, not a guaranteed elapsed time. A slower processor, a busy disk, antivirus scanning or a different toolchain can extend it. Plan for the build to run uninterrupted and avoid placing the repository on a nearly full drive.
Step-by-step installation
1. Clone the source with submodules
Use Git to clone the project’s official repository and include submodules:
git clone --recursive <repository-url>
Supply the repository address shown by the project when you run that command, then change into the directory Git created. The recursive option matters because required dependencies are stored as submodules; a plain clone can leave the checkout incomplete. If you already made a non-recursive clone, initialize and update its submodules before building rather than assuming the missing directories will be created automatically.
2. Put the verified ISO where the build expects it
Create or use the repository’s Game directory and place the verified ISO there. Alternatively, set the SOTC_ISO environment variable to the full path of your image. Keep the original image unchanged so you can recheck its hash if generation fails. Use a path without accidental quotation marks or a mistyped extension, and confirm that Windows has not hidden a second extension such as .iso.iso.
3. Configure the preliminary recompilation target
From the repository root, run:
configure.bat
This prepares the build configuration. Then build the PlayStation 2 recompilation target:

build.bat ps2_recomp
Expect a substantial amount of generated C++ and a long compile. Do not close the window merely because the process pauses while compiling thousands of files. Let the command finish and read the final error lines if it exits unsuccessfully.
4. Generate the port code
Run:
Toolsgenerate.bat
The generator verifies the image, relocates modules and writes generated code under Portgenerated. A wrong ISO revision, a missing image or an incomplete checkout should be fixed rather than bypassed. This is the point at which an incorrect region, revision or sector format is most likely to be exposed.
5. Reconfigure and build the native port
After generation completes, configure again:
configure.bat
Then run the normal build:
build.bat
The project’s stated roughly one-hour full-build estimate applies to the project’s own report and can vary with your CPU, storage and toolchain. Do not delete generated files between generation and the final build unless the project documentation specifically instructs you to do so; they are the output the second configuration consumes.
6. Launch the executable
Start the port with:
run.bat
The resulting executable is expected at buildportbinsotc.exe. On first launch, inspect the generated sotc.ini beside the executable and adjust documented settings there rather than replacing files with an unknown configuration from the internet. Confirm that the game reaches the title screen before changing several settings at once, so a problematic option can be identified.
First-launch controls and useful bindings
The project documents keyboard and mouse defaults as well as gamepad input. A USB controller is optional, but it may feel closer to the original console layout. Test every essential action at the title screen or in an early save before beginning a long session.
| Action | Default keyboard or mouse input |
|---|---|
| Move | W, A, S, D |
| Camera | Mouse |
| Cross / jump | F |
| Circle | Right mouse button |
| Square | Left mouse button |
| Triangle | Space |
| R1 / grab | Left Shift |
| L1 | Q |
| L2 and R2 | Left Ctrl / Right Shift |
| Switch weapons | Arrow keys |
| Start / Select | Enter / Tab |
| L3 / R3 | H / G |
| Save state / load state | F5 / F9 |
| Fullscreen | F11 |
Memory-card saves are supported in addition to save states. Test saving and loading early, then verify that a newly created save remains after restarting the executable. Save states are convenient for testing controls, but a normal memory-card save is the safer long-term checkpoint for a playthrough.
VU1 recompilation: optional performance work
Recompiled VU1 programs are optional. If you do not produce them, VU1 code runs through an interpreter and is slower. Creating VU1 recompilations requires runtime capture and the project’s vu1_recomp tool. Treat this as an advanced, separate optimization step; the documented port can run without it.
Do not confuse this optional step with the mandatory generation and build sequence. First establish that the ordinary build launches and saves correctly. Only then consider runtime capture, because an optional optimization can add another variable to troubleshooting without being required for basic operation.

What the project reports as working
The project reports successful operation across the main game flow:
- Boot, language and video selection, title screen and introductory cutscene.
- Gameplay, Agro riding, climbing and combat.
- Memory-card saves and save states.
- 60 Hz mode, widescreen and fullscreen output.
- Mouse camera, keyboard bindings and gamepad input.
- All 16 colossus fights passing its automated scenario harness; the early colossi were also played through by hand.
These are project-reported results, not an independent compatibility certification. The distinction matters if you encounter a scene-specific problem: successful automated scenarios indicate substantial coverage, but they do not promise identical behavior on every driver or configuration.
Known limitations and performance expectations
| Reported behavior | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Single black frame | An occasional isolated black frame can appear. |
| Shader compilation | A short slowdown may occur when a newly encountered surface first triggers shader compilation. |
| Audio | Audio is functional, but it is not described as a perfect SPU2 reproduction. |
| Unsupported platform | The native port documents Windows support only. |
| GPU feature fallback | GPUs lacking GL_ARB_fragment_shader_interlock use a slower compute-shader fallback. |
| Frame-rate report | The project reports steady 60 fps in heavy scenes on a Ryzen 5 5500 with an RTX 3060. It contrasts this with the original console’s often-reported 20–30 fps. Both figures are project statements, not a universal promise for every PC. |
Do not interpret the 60-fps report as a guarantee for a different processor, graphics card, driver or background workload. OpenGL 4.6 is the documented baseline, while the fragment-shader-interlock feature affects the fallback path’s speed. A brief hitch when a surface first appears is consistent with shader compilation; repeated or severe stutter should instead prompt checks of drivers, GPU capability, background load and whether optional VU1 recompilation was produced.

Troubleshooting the common failure points
The generator rejects the ISO
- Confirm the image is PAL
SCES-53326 v1.00, not another region or revision. - Confirm it uses 2048-byte sectors.
- Recalculate SHA-256 and compare it with
068925770645266189005f09c9a9a1fee25726bfc93c89b12f832f3673664ac4. - Make sure the file is in
Gameor thatSOTC_ISOpoints to the correct full path. - Check that the repository was cloned with submodules and that the image was not truncated during copying.
git, CMake, Ninja, Python or the compiler is not found
Install the missing prerequisite, verify that Python is version 3.10 or newer, and run the batch files from a Visual Studio 2022 developer environment where the C++ tools are on the path. Reopen the shell after changing environment variables. If a plain Command Prompt cannot see the compiler, the developer prompt is the simplest way to load the Visual Studio build environment for that session.
The build appears stuck
A full build creates about 9,000 generated C++ files and may take around an hour according to the project. Check CPU, disk and process activity before interrupting it. Interrupting midway can leave an incomplete build; rerun the documented configure and build sequence if necessary. Record the last command and error text before deleting anything, since the failing stage identifies whether the problem is configuration, recompilation, generation or linking.
The game is slow or stutters
- Verify that the GPU meets OpenGL 4.6.
- Expect a brief slowdown the first time a new surface compiles its shader.
- Remember that VU1 interpretation is slower when optional VU1 recompilation has not been produced.
- If the GPU lacks
GL_ARB_fragment_shader_interlock, the documented compute-shader fallback is slower. - Compare results with a clean launch and no unnecessary background GPU workloads before changing several settings.
Windows warns about a downloaded executable
Do not disable security software to run an unverified binary. The documented safe path is to obtain the source, build locally, and keep the game image separate. No independent malware audit is cited for this project, so a warning should not be dismissed as harmless.
Controls or saves do not behave as expected
Start with the documented defaults, confirm that the window has focus, and test one input at a time. Verify both a memory-card save and an F5 save state, then use F9 to load the state. If fullscreen causes confusion during testing, use F11 to return to the other mode and inspect sotc.ini beside the executable.

| Best fit | Users who want a native Windows executable and are comfortable maintaining a source build. | Users who need broader platform coverage or prefer emulator configuration to recompilation. |
Choose the native port when you specifically want a Windows-native build and are comfortable compiling it from source. Choose PCSX2 when you need Linux or macOS support, lack OpenGL 4.6, or prefer emulator setup over a long recompilation. PCSX2 still requires your own game data and appropriate firmware setup; it is not a way around provenance requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this an official PC release of Shadow of the Colossus?
No. It is an unofficial fan project that recompiles the PAL PlayStation 2 release for Windows and is not affiliated with Sony Interactive Entertainment, Team Ico or Japan Studio.
Does the project include an ISO, BIOS or game files?
No. The repository supplies code and tools only. You must provide your own legally obtained PAL SCES-53326 v1.00 image; the project also states that it includes no BIOS or emulator.
Can I install it without compiling?
The documented workflow is a source build. No trusted prebuilt-binary distribution is established here, so third-party executables should be treated as unverified.
What ISO does the generator require?
It expects the PAL SCES-53326 v1.00 release in 2048-byte-sector ISO form. Verify it against SHA-256 068925770645266189005f09c9a9a1fee25726bfc93c89b12f832f3673664ac4.
What does the full build require and how long can it take?
You need Windows 10 or 11 x64, Visual Studio 2022 with Desktop development with C++, CMake, Ninja, Python 3.10 or newer and an OpenGL 4.6 GPU. The project reports about 9,000 generated C++ files and around one hour for a full build, though your time will vary.
Will it run on Linux or macOS?
The native port documents Windows-only support. PCSX2 is the practical alternative when you need documented Windows, Linux or macOS support.
Is the port malware-free?
No independent malware audit or clean-file guarantee is cited. Download the source from the project repository, build locally when possible, verify the ISO hash and keep Defender and SmartScreen enabled.
Why is my first encounter with a surface slow?
The project reports a short slowdown when a newly encountered surface triggers shader compilation. GPUs without GL_ARB_fragment_shader_interlock use a slower compute-shader fallback, and VU1 interpretation is slower unless optional VU1 recompilation has been produced.
Does it support normal saves and controllers?
Yes. The project reports memory-card saves, save states and gamepad input. Test a memory-card save, an F5/F9 state cycle and your controller before a long session.
The Bottom Line
For the safest installation, use the official source repository, supply and hash-check your own PAL SCES-53326 v1.00 ISO, build locally through the two configure/build stages and keep Windows security tools enabled. Expect a large compilation and project-specific limitations. If Windows-only support or the source-build workload is a problem, PCSX2 offers the more practical cross-platform route while still requiring legally obtained game data.
