Canonical lists Ubuntu 26.04 LTS as released in April 2026, with standard security maintenance through May 2031; see its release-cycle information. Ollama’s cited Linux instructions do not specifically name Ubuntu 26.04 or 24.04 as certified distributions. If you encounter an OS-specific package or graphics-driver problem, check Ollama’s current Linux documentation and your driver documentation.

ollama run ministral-3The catalog lists 3B, 8B, and 14B variants; its 3B artifact is listed at 3.0 GB. The page currently says the family requires Ollama 0.13.1 and describes that version as pre-release. This requirement and release status can change, so check the current Ministral 3 catalog entry before relying on the command. If your installed Ollama version does not meet the stated requirement, follow Ollama’s current installation guidance rather than assuming a stable release is available.

Model files take local disk space, and the catalog artifact figures above do not account for every file or other system use. If internal storage is limited, downloaded model files can be a reason to consider an external drive, but one is not required by these instructions.

Local speed depends on the computer and the model workload. Ollama warns that large models can be slow without a strong GPU. The available documentation does not establish a universal minimum CPU, GPU, memory, or storage specification, so a precise hardware recommendation would depend on the model and how you intend to use it.
Advanced option: Mistral’s reference inference library
For a more hands-on Python and model-weight workflow, Mistral publishes the mistral-inference repository. It documents installing the library with pip install mistral-inference, downloading model weights, and running command-line demos or chat. This route involves more setup than Ollama.
The repository says installation uses a GPU because its xformers dependency requires a GPU to install. It also provides multi-GPU instructions for certain large models, including 8x7B and 8x22B. Those requirements apply to this reference library, not to every way of running Mistral models.
Confirm that the local setup works
After a model command completes its download and starts, use the running session to submit a prompt. If a command fails, check that Ollama installed successfully, that the model name matches the catalog, and—if you chose Ministral 3—that your Ollama version meets its catalog’s current requirement. For distribution-specific or GPU-driver errors, consult the runtime’s current Linux instructions and the relevant driver documentation.
