Install the Windows application on Linux first, add its executable to Steam with Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library, then open the shortcut’s properties and force a Steam Play compatibility tool such as Proton. Launch the shortcut from your Steam Library. This creates a Steam shortcut; it does not make Steam install, update, or validate ownership of the application. Proton is intended primarily for Windows games, so a desktop app is a case-by-case experiment rather than a guaranteed compatibility scenario.
What this method actually does
Proton is Valve’s compatibility tool for the Steam client. It uses Wine and is officially described around running Windows-exclusive games on Linux. A non-Steam shortcut can still be assigned a Proton tool, but Valve does not promise that every Windows desktop program will work. Compatibility depends on the particular application, its graphics and audio requirements, installers, copy protection, services, fonts, and other components.

Adding the executable to Steam does not convert the application into a Steam game. Steam Support describes the result plainly: “This will only add a shortcut to your game in the Steam client.” The shortcut does not transfer a license, add Steam achievements, supply application updates, or serve as proof of ownership. You remain responsible for obtaining, installing, and updating the Windows software.
| What Steam provides | What it does not provide |
|---|---|
| A Library entry that can launch the selected executable | A Windows installation or installer for an unspecified app |
| A place to select a Steam Play compatibility tool | Automatic updates from the original software vendor |
| Launch options for diagnostics and runtime overrides | A guarantee that a desktop application will run |
| Optional support for locally installed Proton builds | Proof that you own or are licensed for the application |
Before you begin
This procedure assumes the application is already installed on your Linux system, or that its installer supports the way you intend to run it. The official Steam shortcut instructions cover adding an executable; they do not document a universal method for installing arbitrary Windows installers. If you only have an installer and it has not been tested with Proton, installation itself is a separate compatibility problem.

- Have a usable executable: Know which
.exefile should start the application. Large programs often contain several executables, including launchers, uninstallers, and helper processes. - Use a supported Linux Steam installation: The wording and location of Steam menus can differ between a desktop Linux distribution and SteamOS.
- Keep the application’s license and files available: Adding a shortcut does not supply either one.
- Start with Steam’s Proton build: Valve recommends the version provided by Steam for most users. A custom build is useful when a specific application needs it, not as a first step.
- Expect app-specific troubleshooting: Because no particular application is specified here, no single Proton version or fix can be verified in advance.
Install the Windows application first
Use the installer and instructions supplied for the application, provided they support your Linux setup and intended compatibility method. The important result for the Steam workflow is an installed program with a known executable. Record that file’s location before opening Steam. If the application uses a separate launcher, determine whether the launcher or the main program is the correct entry point.
Do not assume that selecting an installer in Steam completes a normal Windows installation. Steam’s non-Steam feature is a shortcut manager. It does not replace the application’s installer, create vendor-specific files, or manage dependencies that the program may require.
Add the installed executable to Steam
Desktop Steam client
- Open Steam and choose Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
- In the program list, select the application if it appears. If it does not, choose Browse and navigate to the installed executable.
- Select the correct
.exefile, then choose Add Selected Programs. - Open the Library and locate the new non-Steam entry. Steam may use the executable’s filename as the shortcut name.
The exact picker and labels can vary with the Steam client and Linux distribution. If the program list contains several similarly named files, use the executable you identified during installation rather than an uninstaller or setup file.
Steam Deck desktop mode
In Steam Deck desktop mode, Steam Support describes the equivalent route as using the Add a Game button, choosing Add a Non-Steam game, and finding the installed application. The same shortcut-only limitation applies. A physical keyboard and mouse can make desktop-mode file browsing and application use easier in some situations, but they are convenience items, not requirements for this general procedure.
Force Proton for the non-Steam shortcut
Steam calls compatibility tools part of Steam Play. To assign one to the shortcut:
- In the Steam Library, select the non-Steam entry.
- Open its Properties. Depending on the client version, the relevant control appears under a compatibility or Steam Play section.
- Enable the option that forces the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose an available Proton build from the selector. Start with the Proton version supplied by Steam unless you have a reason to test another build.
- Close the properties window and launch the shortcut from the Library.
Valve’s official material establishes the Steam Play and Proton relationship, but menu wording and the precise location of the checkbox can change between client versions. If you cannot find the control, verify that you are editing the shortcut’s properties in the Library, not the properties of an unrelated installed game.

The first launch may create a compatibility environment and take longer than later launches. If the application opens, test its ordinary functions before changing Proton versions. A successful launch does not prove that every feature works; check sign-in, file access, rendering, audio, printing, plug-ins, and any hardware integration that matters to your use.

Use a custom local Proton build
Most users should stay with the Proton build Steam supplies. A locally installed build is an advanced option for testing a compatibility fix or a version supplied by a trusted project.
- Obtain the custom Proton build in its redistributable form and keep the build’s files together.
- Create a directory for custom compatibility tools under
~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/. Give the build its own clearly named subdirectory. - Place the complete build in that subdirectory; do not flatten or rename files in a way that breaks its expected structure.
- Restart Steam so it rescans the compatibility-tools directory.
- Return to the non-Steam shortcut’s compatibility settings and select the newly detected tool.
- Launch the application and record whether this build improves or worsens behavior before trying another change.
If the custom tool is not listed after restarting Steam, check the directory spelling, the build’s folder structure, and whether the files are readable by your user account. A locally installed tool can be detected by Steam without being suitable for your particular application.
When the shortcut does nothing or closes immediately
An unnamed application cannot be assigned a universal fix. Use a controlled sequence so you know which change affected the result.
| Symptom | Checks to make |
|---|---|
| The Library entry is missing | Use Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library again and confirm that the shortcut was added to the account’s current Library. |
| Steam launches the wrong program | Open the shortcut’s properties and verify that the target is the application executable, not an installer, updater, crash reporter, or uninstaller. |
| Nothing appears after clicking Play | Confirm that a Proton/Steam Play tool is selected and available. Then retry with the application’s actual executable. |
| The program starts and exits | Capture a Proton log, test one compatible tool at a time, and check the application’s own requirements. Do not assume the failure has one common cause. |
| A custom Proton option is absent | Restart Steam and inspect ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/ for the required named directory and complete build. |
| Graphics are corrupted or a window is blank | Use the renderer experiment described below, then remove the launch option if it does not help. |
Changing several settings simultaneously makes a diagnosis harder. Keep a short record of the executable, Proton tool, launch options, and observed result for each attempt.

PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
Launch the application once, reproduce the failure, and then inspect the resulting log in your home directory. The Proton FAQ documents the filename as $HOME/steam-$STEAM_APP_ID.log and says a previous log with that name is overwritten. That FAQ is dated January 2020, so treat the exact filename and output behavior as older documentation; if your current client behaves differently, consult the current Proton project documentation and look for the newly created log file.
Remove PROTON_LOG=1 after collecting the information if you do not need logs on every launch. Keeping diagnostics enabled can create fresh files and obscure which run produced a particular message.
Test the alternative Direct3D renderer
For applications that rely on Direct3D 9, 10, or 11, Proton documents a launch-option override that uses OpenGL-based wined3d instead of Vulkan-based DXVK:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
This is a troubleshooting experiment, not a general performance upgrade. It may help isolate a Vulkan or DXVK-related problem, while reducing performance or changing visual behavior in other cases. Test the application with the option, note the result, and remove it to return to the previous behavior. Proton documents launch-option overrides as runtime-only; removing the option does not permanently alter the Wine prefix.
If the application still fails, do not keep stacking unrelated variables onto the same line. Return to a simple command, capture a log, and change one factor at a time.
Understand the Proton prefix
Proton stores Windows-like files and registry data in a prefix associated with a Steam application identifier. The Proton FAQ describes a relevant layout as steamapps/compatdata/[appid]/pfx/ inside the Steam library. That documentation is old, and non-Steam shortcuts can have different configuration details, so do not treat that path as guaranteed for every current setup.

Before deleting, copying, or editing a prefix, close the application and Steam processes that may still be using it. A prefix can contain settings, saved data, and installed components. Removing it may reset the application or erase data that is not stored elsewhere. If you need to reset a broken environment, back up application data first and prefer the application’s own export or backup function when available.

Do not edit prefix files merely because a launch failed. First verify the executable and compatibility tool, then collect a log. Manual registry or DLL changes are application-specific and can make later troubleshooting less reliable.

Rename and identify it
Use the shortcut’s Library context menu to give it a clear name that includes the application and, if useful, whether it is a launcher or main executable. A descriptive name helps when several non-Steam programs are present, but renaming does not change the target file.
Update the application outside Steam
Because Steam only stores a launch shortcut, obtain application updates through the application’s normal vendor-supported process. After an update, confirm that the executable path has not changed. If it has, edit the shortcut or remove and re-add the correct executable.
Remove a shortcut safely
Removing a non-Steam entry from the Library removes the shortcut, not necessarily the installed Windows files or its Proton prefix. Decide separately whether you want to uninstall the application and whether its compatibility data should be retained for a later test. Avoid deleting directories until you have identified where the application stores documents and saved data.

There is no meaningful Proton-version ranking without the application’s name, release, architecture, dependencies, and required features. Evaluate the result against the work you actually need to do.
Best Value
- Launch reliability: Does the executable open consistently with the selected tool?
- Core function: Can you create, open, save, export, or otherwise complete the application’s primary task?
- Rendering: Are windows, text, menus, and accelerated content drawn correctly?
- Input and peripherals: Do keyboard shortcuts, pointer input, controllers, scanners, printers, or other required devices work?
- Online services: Does sign-in or synchronization work under the application’s own terms and policies?
- Maintenance: Can you update the application and recover its data without relying on undocumented prefix edits?
If only a minor feature fails, you may decide that the shortcut is useful. If the application’s essential function is unreliable, changing Proton versions may not solve the underlying incompatibility. The absence of a named app in this guide means its specific status remains unverified.
Steam Deck and desktop Linux differences
The conceptual workflow is the same on desktop Linux and Steam Deck desktop mode: install the application, add its executable as a non-Steam game, select a Steam Play compatibility tool, and launch it from the Library. SteamOS updates can change labels and file locations, so follow the labels shown by your installed client rather than an old screenshot.
Desktop mode is also where you browse files and manage custom tools. A physical keyboard and mouse can make those tasks more convenient, especially when an application has dense Windows-style controls. They are not a requirement for adding a shortcut, and this guide does not claim that every desktop application is practical to operate with the Deck’s built-in controls.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Adding the installer instead of the installed program: Steam will launch the selected file, so choosing setup.exe can simply reopen setup or do nothing useful.
- Assuming the shortcut supplies updates: Updates remain the application vendor’s responsibility.
- Assuming Proton is a general Windows desktop layer: Valve’s official description centers on games, and non-game behavior must be tested app by app.
- Changing Proton builds without recording results: Keep one variable changed at a time.
- Leaving diagnostic overrides enabled forever: Remove log and renderer options after testing unless you intentionally need them.
- Deleting a prefix as a first response: It can remove settings or saved data and may not address a wrong executable or missing compatibility selection.
Decision: is this the right approach?
Use the Steam shortcut method when you already have an installed Windows program, want it alongside your Steam library, and accept app-specific testing. Begin with Steam’s Proton build, verify the executable, and use launch options only to answer a concrete diagnostic question.
Choose a different Linux-native release or another supported installation method when the application publisher provides one and you need dependable updates, hardware integration, or support. Proton can be valuable, but adding a shortcut does not turn an unsupported Windows desktop application into a guaranteed Linux program.
