How to Install and Position Arlo Pro 6 Cameras Indoors and Outdoors

Choose a position that covers the approach or room you care about, gives the camera an unobstructed view and a strong Wi-Fi signal in the Arlo Secure app, and lets expected movement travel across the image. Arlo’s Pro 6 manual recommends mounting 4–6 feet (1.3–2 m) above the ground. Set up the camera in the app first, test the proposed position, and mount only when the app prompts you to do so.

Where should you put an Arlo Pro 6 camera?

Begin with the area you need to see, not with the nearest convenient wall or the spot closest to the router. Decide which approach, doorway, room, or other scene matters, then look for a position that shows it clearly without an avoidable obstruction. Arlo’s Pro 6 Camera User Manual recommends a corner position when it can expand the camera’s coverage.

For an outdoor view, likely areas to consider include the front or back door, accessible windows, and an entrance through a fence. These are examples of access points to assess, not a guarantee that one camera can monitor every part of a property. A doorway, a side path, and a detached building may require different views; prioritize the specific area each camera is meant to cover.

For a room, place the camera so the intended scene is visible rather than pointing it straight at a reflective surface. A position can be high enough and close enough to the subject yet still provide a poor view if a wall, furniture, a deep overhang, or another obstruction blocks the important part of the frame. Check the whole scene, including the edges, before deciding where to fix the mount.

Use the app to assess a candidate position

Hold the camera where you are considering placing it and use the Arlo Secure app to check its line of sight and Wi-Fi strength before drilling or attaching a mount. This is more useful than judging connectivity from router distance alone: walls, construction materials, water, metal, glass and mirrors, and multiple floors can affect a signal. Arlo’s general placement guidance also identifies thick walls and materials such as brick, concrete, stucco, stone, and ceramic as possible sources of interference.

If the signal is weak, try a nearby position with fewer obstructions and check again in the app. A location that looks ideal from the outside is not necessarily a reliable camera position if the app shows poor connectivity. Make the signal check part of the placement decision, alongside the view you want.

How high should you mount an Arlo Pro 6?

Arlo’s Pro 6 Camera User Manual recommends a height of 4–6 feet (1.3–2 m) above the ground. The manual explains that the camera has its best motion-detection range and field of view at this height. Apply this Pro 6-specific guidance rather than substituting a height recommendation for an older Arlo model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Height is a starting point, not a replacement for checking the image. At the recommended height, verify that the area you want to monitor is in frame and that the view is not blocked. If a location forces a choice between the exact height and a clear, useful view with a good signal, assess the actual app preview and scene rather than assuming height alone guarantees useful coverage. The cited guidance does not establish a separate indoor mounting height.

How should you aim the camera to catch motion?

Where possible, arrange the view so expected movement crosses the frame from side to side. Arlo says the Pro 6 motion sensor is more effective when movement crosses the field of view than when someone moves directly toward or away from the camera. For example, if you want to monitor a path to a door, consider whether the approach can pass across the image rather than straight toward the lens.

Think about the usual direction of travel when you frame the shot: people approaching a doorway, walking along a path, or crossing a room may move differently. Aim for a view that includes the relevant route and allows that movement to pass through the frame. Then inspect the live view in the app and make small angle adjustments so the area of interest remains visible.

Avoid pointing directly at windows, mirrors, or other reflective surfaces. Glare or reflections can interfere with performance and make the scene harder to interpret. Indoors, be particularly careful about a camera aimed through a reflective window; the indoor setting does not remove the need to check glare, movement direction, line of sight, and Wi-Fi.

Can you install an Arlo Pro 6 outdoors?

Arlo’s weather guidance lists Pro series cameras as weather resistant and suitable for outdoor use. It separately cautions users not to expose Arlo batteries or the inside of battery compartments to water. Weather resistance should not be taken to mean that an open battery compartment is protected, or that any charging arrangement is safe from weather.

Arlo’s support guidance, last updated September 2, 2026, gives a recommended operating range of -4°F to 113°F (-20°C to 45°C) for most Arlo cameras and doorbells. This is general guidance, not a Pro 6-specific operating range established here. Treat it as a general reference rather than a precise model-specific limit.

If you plan to power or charge the camera outdoors, confirm that the charging accessory is explicitly intended for outdoor use and is compatible with your exact Pro 6 variant before buying or installing it. Arlo’s general weather information mentions outdoor charging cables and solar panels for some cameras, but does not establish compatibility for Pro 6 in the information cited here. Do not infer that an accessory works with Pro 6 simply because it is intended for another Arlo camera.

Which mount fits the Arlo Pro 6?

Arlo’s Adjustable Indoor/Outdoor Mount installation instructions list model VMC4070 as an applicable camera. The instructions describe mounting to a wall or ceiling and adjusting the camera’s angle. Confirm the model number of your camera and the hardware included in its box before ordering an additional mount: Pro 6 materials identify VMC4070 and a VMC4072 Pro XL variant, while the cited mount instructions specifically name VMC4070.

Mount option What the cited Arlo information establishes What to check
Adjustable Indoor/Outdoor Mount Arlo’s installation instructions list VMC4070 and describe wall or ceiling installation with angle adjustment. Confirm your camera variant, whether a mount is already included, and suitability of the surface and supplied hardware.
Magnetic wall mount The compatibility text on Arlo’s product page names earlier camera generations through Pro 5; it does not explicitly name Pro 6. Do not assume it fits Pro 6. Check the current compatibility listing for the exact model before choosing it.

When choosing between mount designs, verify explicit compatibility first. Then consider how securely the mount can attach to the selected surface, whether its adjustment range suits the view, and whether you expect to reposition or remove the camera. A mount that is convenient to move is not a useful choice if its compatibility with the camera has not been established.

How to set up and mount the camera

Setup prompts can vary with the device, account, app version, and region. Use the prompts currently shown in the Arlo Secure app rather than relying on a fixed sequence of screens. Arlo’s Adjustable Indoor/Outdoor Mount instructions specifically say not to begin mounting until the app tells you to mount the camera.

  1. Prepare the camera and begin app setup. Charge the camera as needed, then start setup in the Arlo Secure app. Follow its current prompts. Do not install the mount before the app directs you to do so.
  2. Test the intended location before drilling. Hold the camera at the proposed position and check the view and Wi-Fi strength in the app. Confirm that the scene is unobstructed and includes the area you want to monitor. If the signal is weak, try a nearby position with fewer obstructions and test again.
  3. Confirm the mount and surface. Check that the mount instructions cover your exact camera model, then inspect whether the wall or ceiling and the hardware are appropriate for the installation. The adjustable-mount instructions recommend anchors for drywall, brick, or tile.
  4. Mark and prepare the mount locations. For Arlo’s Adjustable Indoor/Outdoor Mount, mark the three screw locations. The instructions specify a 15/64-inch (6 mm) drill bit; this specification is for installing that mount, not a general recommendation for every surface or camera accessory.
  5. Fasten the mounting plate and attach the camera. Use a Phillips screwdriver to fasten the plate, then attach the camera as directed by the mount instructions. Use the prescribed anchors where recommended for the surface rather than relying on screws alone in drywall, brick, or tile.
  6. Aim and secure the camera. Adjust the camera toward the intended scene, then tighten the mount’s adjustment. Frame the view to capture the relevant area and, where possible, let expected movement cross the image.
  7. Check the installed view in the app. Open the live view and confirm that the scene you meant to cover is visible. If the framing needs correction, make a small angle change and inspect the result again.

Arlo Support last updated its Adjustable Indoor/Outdoor Mount instructions on February 25, 2026. Follow the instructions for the actual mount in your possession if its supplied hardware or directions differ; do not assume every adjustable mount uses the same fixing method.

Indoor placement: practical checks

For an indoor camera, start with the room or approach you want in view, then assess the proposed position using the same height guidance, app-based line-of-sight and signal checks, and motion-framing principles. Keep the image clear of direct views of windows, mirrors, and reflective surfaces that can cause glare. Check the view from the camera’s actual position instead of assuming that a room visible to you will also be fully visible in the live view.

If the camera is meant to watch an entrance, consider where someone will move after entering and whether that path crosses the frame. If it is meant to watch a larger room, identify the portion of the room that matters most rather than aiming without a specific coverage goal. The sources do not provide a distinct indoor height recommendation, so the Pro 6 manual’s general 4–6-foot recommendation remains the published height guidance.

Outdoor placement: access, obstacles, and signal

Choose an outdoor scene based on the access point or route you need to monitor, then check that the camera can see it without an avoidable obstruction. A position near a door may leave an accessible window or fence entrance outside the frame; decide which area takes priority instead of assuming a single view covers all vulnerable approaches.

Test Wi-Fi at the proposed camera position in the Arlo Secure app. Outdoor walls and the building materials between camera and router can matter as much as straight-line distance. If the test shows weak signal, try a position with fewer obstructions and recheck it before fixing the camera in place.

Keep the camera and battery compartment protected from water exposure in the way Arlo’s guidance requires. Weather-resistant outdoor use does not establish that an open compartment or an unverified charging setup is weatherproof. Check any accessory against the exact model and its outdoor-use instructions before relying on it.

Common placement problems and what to change

  • The app shows weak Wi-Fi at the chosen spot. Move the camera to a nearby position with fewer intervening obstructions, then retest in the app. Do not treat a short router distance as proof that the signal will be strong.
  • The scene is blocked or misses the approach. Reposition the camera or adjust its angle so the intended area is visible in the live view. Check the whole frame, not just the center.
  • Movement appears to come directly toward or away from the camera. Where the layout permits, alter the camera’s position or aim so expected movement travels across the frame, which Arlo says is more effective for motion sensing.
  • Reflections or glare obscure the image. Change the angle or position to avoid a direct view of a window, mirror, or reflective surface.
  • The mount does not match the camera or surface. Confirm the precise camera model against the mount’s compatibility information and choose fixing hardware appropriate to the surface. The cited adjustable-mount instructions name VMC4070, not every Pro 6 variant.
  • An outdoor charging accessory seems suitable but compatibility is unclear. Verify both outdoor suitability and compatibility with the exact Pro 6 model. General mentions of accessories for some Arlo cameras do not establish Pro 6 support.

Before you commit to the final position

  • The app shows a usable view of the area you selected.
  • The intended scene is not unnecessarily blocked, and the camera is not aimed directly at a reflective surface.
  • Expected movement can cross the field of view where the layout allows.
  • The Arlo Secure app indicates good Wi-Fi at the proposed location.
  • The planned height follows the Pro 6 manual’s 4–6-foot (1.3–2 m) guidance where practical.
  • The mount’s compatibility is confirmed for the camera’s exact model, and the installation hardware suits the mounting surface.
  • For outdoor use, the battery compartment will not be exposed to water, and any charging accessory has verified model compatibility and outdoor suitability.
