For Blizzard’s supported World of Warcraft: Classic, install the game through the Battle.net desktop app. Open World of Warcraft, choose the Classic version you want, and select Install. That installs Blizzard’s client and connects to Blizzard’s realms; it does not configure a third-party private server.
If by “private server” you mean an unauthorized server emulating Blizzard’s game service, Blizzard’s published materials do not provide client downloads, configuration files, server lists, or connection instructions for it. Blizzard’s Legal FAQ says it does not support or condone network play anywhere except Battle.net, and its End User License Agreement restricts unauthorized connections to servers that emulate the platform. Those are Blizzard’s stated policies, not a determination of the law in every country.

Decide which version you are installing
World of Warcraft is not one interchangeable installation in Blizzard’s launcher. The Battle.net app presents separate game versions and modes, including Modern WoW, WoW Classic Era and Cataclysm Classic. Blizzard says each version must be installed separately, so choosing the wrong entry can leave you with a different client than the one you intended to play.

Cataclysm Classic
Cataclysm Classic is a separate Classic-era option in the launcher. It has its own installation and should be selected independently from Classic Era.
Modern WoW
Modern WoW is listed alongside the Classic choices. Installing Modern WoW does not install the Classic client; select the Classic entry required by the characters or realm you intend to use.
Decide whether you need Blizzard’s service
Before downloading anything, identify the service you actually want. If you want Blizzard’s supported game, the Battle.net route below is the complete installation path. If you are looking for a community-operated realm outside Battle.net, the official launcher is not a private-server installer, and Blizzard’s support pages do not document a generic alternative route.
Recommended Free Tools
This distinction prevents two common errors. First, installing Modern WoW and expecting a Classic character to appear there will not work because the entries are separate. Second, installing an official Classic client does not by itself identify, approve or connect to an independently operated server. Keep the official installation and any third-party software, claims and policies conceptually separate.
Install the official Classic client through Battle.net
- Launch the Battle.net desktop app. Sign in to the Blizzard account that will be used to play. Using the intended account matters because access prompts and purchase status are tied to that account.
- Open World of Warcraft. Select the World of Warcraft icon. If it is not visible in the main view, find it under All Games.
- Choose the game version. Above the installation control, open the version selector and choose WoW Classic Era, Cataclysm Classic or another Classic mode shown for your account. Read the label instead of relying on the last version you installed.
- Click Install. Choose the destination and allow Battle.net to download the selected files. The launcher manages the supported client and its updates.
- Wait for the installation to finish. When Battle.net changes the control from installation to play, launch the game from the same version entry. Installing one version does not make the other versions available.
Blizzard’s installation instructions apply to its official versions and game modes. They do not install, identify or authorize a private-server client. If the launcher offers several World of Warcraft entries, return to the selector whenever you are uncertain which one is being installed.
Check account access before troubleshooting the download
Blizzard says WoW Classic versions or selected game modes may require game time or a subscription. Its Classic primer describes access for active subscribers or accounts with game time as included without an additional Classic purchase. The launcher can therefore show a subscription or access prompt even when the files themselves are already installed.
If Battle.net asks you to subscribe, first confirm that you are signed in to the intended account. Blizzard’s support guidance also recommends checking purchase status or redemption status where those apply. Do not assume that every mode has identical access rules: the requirement is presented by Blizzard for Classic versions or selected modes, and the account’s current status controls what the launcher permits.
These sources do not establish a current subscription price. Check the live account and subscription pages for the amount and currency that apply to your region rather than relying on an old figure. A payment prompt is not evidence that the installer is broken; it may simply mean the signed-in account lacks the access Blizzard currently requires.
Start Classic and choose a realm
After the correct version is installed and your account has access, select Play from its Battle.net entry. Blizzard’s Classic primer describes the next step as choosing a realm. A realm is the game world in which your characters exist. Blizzard notes that characters can group only with other players on the same realm, so realm choice affects whom you can play with.

Choose with your group in mind
If friends or a guild already play on a particular official realm, select that realm before creating a character. A character created on another realm is not automatically part of the same player community for grouping purposes. Ask your group for the exact realm name and confirm that you launched the same Classic version they use.
Keep the selected version consistent
A realm belongs to a specific game version. If a realm or character is not visible, return to the Battle.net version selector and confirm that you launched the same Classic mode in which it was created. Switching from Classic Era to Cataclysm Classic, or to Modern WoW, changes the game environment you are opening; it is not a substitute for selecting the original version.

A private server is a service operated outside Blizzard’s official Battle.net network, generally using server software that emulates or redirects communication with the game. The official Battle.net installation gives you Blizzard’s supported game files and launcher; it does not turn that installation into a private-server connection.
Blizzard’s Legal FAQ states: Blizzard Entertainment® does not support or condone network play of its games anywhere but Battle.net®.
The same FAQ describes hosting or providing matchmaking and emulating or redirecting Blizzard communication protocols as prohibited without prior written consent. Blizzard’s End User License Agreement separately addresses unauthorized connections, including connections to unauthorized servers that emulate or attempt to emulate the platform.
Those statements describe Blizzard’s policy and contractual position. They should not be expanded into a blanket conclusion about the law in every jurisdiction. Local rules, the operator’s conduct and the specific software involved can affect legal questions, so obtain qualified local advice if that is the issue you need answered.
Why the official guide cannot provide private-server setup steps
Blizzard’s published installation and support material covers the Battle.net desktop app, Blizzard’s version selector, official downloads, account access and official realms. It does not document a particular private server, provide a server address, distribute an alternative client, specify configuration files or explain how to redirect the game’s network traffic.
There is also no single private-server procedure that can be applied safely to every operator. A server may use a different client build, launcher, patch or account system, and its availability can change independently of Blizzard. The reviewed official materials establish none of those details for any particular server. For that reason, an official installation article cannot responsibly supply a generic download or connection recipe.
Do not treat a forum post, a download mirror or a launcher branded with “Classic” as evidence that it is an official Blizzard component. The name of a server, its claimed patch level and its account instructions are operator-specific facts, not details supplied by Blizzard’s installation guide. Verifying such claims would require independent information about that operator and software.
Official and private-server routes compared
| Aspect | Official WoW Classic | Private server |
|---|---|---|
| Installation software | Battle.net desktop app | Blizzard’s support material gives no private-server installer |
| Version selection | Modern WoW, WoW Classic Era and Cataclysm Classic are separate launcher choices | A specific operator’s client and version are not established by Blizzard’s guides |
| Account access | Blizzard says Classic versions or selected modes may require game time or a subscription | Operator-specific requirements are not established in the official sources |
| Realm play | Choose a Blizzard realm; characters group with players on the same realm | Realm rules depend on the operator and are not documented by Blizzard |
| Network and support | Battle.net is the supported network and Blizzard provides installation support | Blizzard says it does not support or condone network play outside Battle.net |
| System requirements | Use Blizzard’s current requirements page for the selected version and operating system | Particular server and client requirements are not established by the cited Blizzard material |
The comparison is intentionally limited to facts Blizzard publishes. It does not rank private-server operators, estimate their populations or claim that one has better uptime, security or content. Those would be separate, operator-specific evaluations.

Fix common problems with the official installation
Battle.net shows “Install” even though the files are present
Blizzard’s support article says to use Locate the game. Select that option and browse to the existing World of Warcraft folder. This reconnects the launcher with files already on the computer instead of downloading another copy. After locating it, check that the selected version corresponds to those files.

The wrong Classic mode appears after installation
Open the version selector above the installation or play control and verify the exact entry. Classic versions install separately, so a completed Modern WoW or Cataclysm Classic installation will not satisfy a Classic Era launch request. If necessary, select the intended entry and install that version as its own client.
The launcher asks for a subscription
Check the signed-in account, then review its game-time, subscription, purchase and redemption status. The prompt is an account-access issue, not proof that the download failed. Blizzard’s wording allows for requirements that differ by version or selected mode, so use the current account page rather than an old forum answer.
The game will not launch after an older installation
Use Battle.net’s Locate the game function to identify the existing folder, then confirm that the selected version matches the installed files. If the launcher still cannot associate the files, follow Blizzard’s current installation troubleshooting rather than adding an unverified third-party launcher.
You are unsure whether the computer meets the requirements
Blizzard’s Classic primer contains system information, but specifications can become dated as versions and operating systems change. Check the current Blizzard requirements page for the exact Classic version and operating system before treating an older specification as authoritative. The installation instructions do not establish one timeless hardware specification for every Classic mode.
You cannot find a character or realm
First verify the version entry you launched. Blizzard presents the Classic choices separately, and realm and character visibility depends on being in the matching game environment. If friends are on an official realm, confirm its exact name and make sure your account has the access required for that mode.
What to verify before using any third-party software
The official sources do not establish the safety, legitimacy, availability or maintenance status of any private server. They also do not verify a private server’s downloads, launcher, account process or compatibility with a particular Classic version. Treat those as separate claims that require independent verification.
- Identify whether you are seeking Blizzard’s supported service or an independently operated server; the installation paths are not the same.
- Confirm which official Classic version you actually want before downloading anything through Battle.net.
- Use Blizzard’s live support and requirements pages for official installation, account and hardware questions.
- Do not interpret the existence of a third-party server as Blizzard approval. Blizzard’s published policy expressly says otherwise.
- Consider the rules that apply where you live and seek qualified legal advice for a jurisdiction-specific answer.
- Do not enter Blizzard account credentials into an unrelated launcher unless you have independently determined who operates it and what account system it uses.
- Be cautious of downloads that claim to be required by the official installer; Blizzard’s supported route is the Battle.net desktop app.
This checklist does not endorse a private server or supply connection instructions. It prevents a common mistake: installing an official client and expecting it to provide access to a service that Blizzard does not operate.
When Blizzard support is the right destination
Use Blizzard Support for Battle.net installation failures, version-selection errors, account or game-time prompts, locating an existing installation and current system requirements. Include the exact version selected in the launcher and the wording of any error message when seeking help. Those details tell support whether the issue concerns Modern WoW, Classic Era, Cataclysm Classic or another entry.

Questions about a third-party server’s launcher, patch, account, realm or connection cannot be answered by Blizzard’s official installation guide. They concern an independently operated service, and the reviewed Blizzard material does not provide instructions or support for those systems. Keep any request to Blizzard focused on the supported Battle.net client and account.

Can I install WoW Classic without Battle.net?
Blizzard’s documented process installs all World of Warcraft versions and game modes through the Battle.net desktop app. The supported instructions do not describe a separate official installer.
Does installing Classic Era also install Cataclysm Classic?
No. Blizzard lists the versions separately and says each must be installed separately. Select the exact Classic entry you intend to play.
Is WoW Classic included with a subscription?
Blizzard says Classic versions or selected modes may require game time or a subscription, and its Classic primer describes access for active subscribers or accounts with game time as included without an additional Classic purchase. Check the current account page for your mode and region.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does Battle.net ask me to subscribe when the game is installed?
Installation and account access are different checks. Confirm the signed-in account and review game-time, subscription, purchase or redemption status. The prompt can appear even when the files are already present.
Can characters on different realms group together?
Blizzard’s Classic primer says characters can group only with others on the same realm. Coordinate the realm with friends or your guild before creating a character.
Does Blizzard provide a private-server client or server list?
No. Blizzard’s installation and support material covers Battle.net and official realms, not third-party clients, server addresses, configuration files or network redirection.
Is playing on a private server illegal everywhere?
Blizzard publishes a policy against unsupported network play and contractual restrictions on unauthorized connections, but those statements are not a universal legal ruling for every jurisdiction. Local law and the particular conduct involved require qualified local advice.

The practical answer
To play Blizzard’s WoW Classic, install the chosen Classic version in Battle.net, ensure the account has the required game time or subscription, launch that version and choose an official realm. A private server is a different, unsupported service; the official client and installation process do not provide a documented or endorsed way to connect to it. Blizzard’s legal and support pages are the appropriate references for the supported route, while any jurisdiction-specific legal question requires local advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
