Yes—you can still install and play the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 if your Steam account already owns it. The 28 September 2026 standalone-sale cutoff removed the old purchase option, not existing licenses. Open the owning account’s Steam Library, select the original game entry, and install it normally. New players should look for Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition, which SEGA says includes the original game and its downloadable content (DLC).
This guide explains which edition to choose, how to recover a missing library entry, what happens to DLC, how the two mod systems differ, and which platform requirements still matter.

What the 2026 delisting changed—and what it did not
SEGA announced that Total War: SHOGUN 2 would stop being sold as a standalone Steam purchase on 28 September 2026 at 17:00 BST (16:00 UTC). That is a change to the store offer, not a revocation of licenses already attached to Steam accounts.
SEGA’s Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition FAQs states: “For existing owners, nothing will change. The game will remain playable, and all current Steam owners of Total War: SHOGUN 2 will be granted any DLC they do not already own, for free.” The same FAQ says the original will continue to exist on Steam and remain playable as normal.

In practical terms:
- Already owned the original: install it from your Steam Library; you do not need to buy the Complete Edition.
- Never owned it: the official replacement purchase route is the Complete Edition, subject to the current store listing, region, price and activation terms.
- Owned some DLC: SEGA says current Steam owners receive DLC they did not already own at no charge. Confirm the resulting entitlements in Steam’s DLC panel.
- Use original Workshop mods: keep launching the original entry. SEGA says original mods remain unchanged and are not compatible with the Complete Edition’s integrated Mod.io support.
Store availability can change while platform holders resolve launch or listing issues. A Steam Community announcement from SEGA and Creative Assembly said they were working with platform holders to remove the Complete Edition from sale and reinstate the original while investigating reported issues; it also confirmed that existing owners would still be able to access and play the game. Check the current official Steam and SEGA pages immediately before a new purchase.
Choose the correct edition before installing

The Complete Edition launched on 13 October 2026 according to the SEGA Creative Assembly product page. Its name can cause confusion: for installation purposes, treat it as a separate store product with bundled content, not as an automatic replacement for the original library entry.
Install the original from an existing Steam license
Use these steps when the account previously bought or redeemed Total War: SHOGUN 2.

A family member’s account, a different email address or a newly created account will not show the license. If you redeemed a retail key, use the account on which that key was activated.
- Open Library. Select Library in the Steam client and search for
Total War: SHOGUN 2. Search for the original title, not only the Complete Edition store page. - Select the original library entry. The page should show the familiar game entry and an Install button. Do not assume that a store search result represents your owned product.
- Choose a library drive. Click Install, select the Steam library folder or drive, and accept the destination prompt. Leave enough free space for the game and temporary download files.
- Wait for Steam to finish. Steam displays download and installation progress in the Downloads view. Keep the client online until the installation completes.
- Launch the original entry. Use Play from the Library page. If you rely on original Workshop content, launch this entry rather than the Complete Edition.
- Check downloadable content. Open the game’s Library page, use the DLC panel, and verify which items are installed or enabled. SEGA’s free-DLC commitment applies to current Steam owners who did not already own those items.
A delisted store page may no longer offer a purchase button, but that absence does not remove an owned game from the Library. Installation is controlled by the account license, not by whether the public shop page still sells the standalone product.
If Total War: SHOGUN 2 is missing from your Library
Work through the checks in this order; each one addresses a different cause.

Verify the account and license
- Sign out of Steam and sign back in with every account you may have used when buying or redeeming the game.
- Check your Steam purchase history and key-activation records for the original title.
- If the game was received through a gift, confirm which account accepted the gift.
Remove display filters
- In Library, clear collection filters and search terms.
- Inspect Hidden Games; a hidden title will not appear in the normal list.
- Switch between installed and all-games views so an uninstalled license is not filtered out.
Refresh the client
- Restart Steam completely, including the background client, then sign in again.
- Allow Steam to update before searching the Library.
- Search the exact title again and inspect the account’s library list rather than relying on a web-store bookmark.
Escalate to Steam Support
If the license still does not appear, use Steam Support’s Total War: SHOGUN 2 product page and provide the account, purchase or activation evidence requested there. Support is the appropriate route for a missing entitlement. Do not use unofficial cracks, altered executables or license workarounds: they can expose the account and files to malware and do not restore a legitimate Steam license.
Buying the game when you never owned the original
SEGA identifies Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition as the PC purchase route for Steam, Epic Games Store and Windows. It contains the original game and DLC according to SEGA’s product information.

- The seller and platform are the official storefront or an authorized key seller.
- Your country or region is supported and the key activates there.
- The product is a PC edition and specifies the platform account it uses.
- The package explicitly lists the base game and the DLC you expect.
- The refund window and restrictions are acceptable before you redeem a key.
A purchase of the Complete Edition does not change the installation procedure for an existing original license. If both entries appear in your account, select the one whose mod ecosystem and content match your intended play.
DLC after the standalone product is delisted
SEGA’s FAQ provides a specific entitlement rule: current Steam owners of the original receive DLC they do not already own for free. This is an account-level grant, so the items should appear in Steam’s DLC controls rather than requiring a second checkout.

- Open Library and select the original game.
- Open the game’s properties or DLC panel, depending on the current Steam client layout.
- Review the list of available items and confirm that the checkboxes for eligible DLC are enabled.
- Allow Steam to download any newly granted content, then restart the game if a campaign or faction does not appear.
The FAQ does not establish that the same automatic grant applies to every platform or to every Complete Edition transaction. For a non-Steam purchase, rely on that platform’s live package description and support policy.
Steam Workshop mods versus the Complete Edition’s Mod.io support
Mod compatibility is the clearest reason to choose the original executable even after obtaining the bundled edition. SEGA states that mods for the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 remain unchanged. It also states that those original mods are not compatible with the Complete Edition’s integrated Mod.io support.
Use original Workshop mods
- Install and launch the original Steam Library entry.
- Subscribe to Workshop items that explicitly target the original game.
- Enable or disable them through the original game’s mod manager or launch options.
- After a game update, test a save without mods before re-enabling a large load order.
Use the Complete Edition mod system
Use only mods listed for the Complete Edition’s Mod.io integration. Do not copy an original Workshop mod into the new edition’s folders and expect it to work; the two systems and executables are not interchangeable. Keep separate mod profiles and backups of saves so that a failed conversion cannot overwrite an unmodded campaign.
Platform, operating-system and hardware considerations
Steam’s store and support material lists legacy Windows, macOS and Linux builds and publishes older hardware requirements for the original. Those specifications are a baseline, not a guarantee for every modern configuration. Confirm the current listing for the edition and platform you intend to run.
Steam also states that its client supports Windows 10 and later from 1 January 2024. A computer running an older Windows release may therefore fail at the Steam-client level even if the game’s legacy requirements appear satisfied. Update the operating system where possible, install current graphics drivers, and reserve adequate storage before beginning the download.

The exact current requirements for the Complete Edition may differ from the original’s published requirements. Check the live Complete Edition page for supported operating systems, processor and memory requirements, graphics hardware, storage and any platform-specific launcher requirements. No controlled performance benchmark is established for either edition, so do not treat the legacy specification as a measured frame-rate promise.

The Install button is absent
Confirm that you are viewing the owned Library entry, not a delisted store page or the Complete Edition listing. Clear filters, inspect Hidden Games and verify the account. If the entitlement remains absent, contact Steam Support with purchase evidence.
Steam says the game is installed but Play fails
Restart Steam, let pending client updates finish and verify the installation through the game’s properties. Update graphics drivers and check that the operating system meets the current Steam-client requirement. If the failure began after adding a mod, disable the mod and test an unmodded launch before changing other files.
DLC does not appear in game
Check the Library DLC panel first, enable the relevant items and allow Steam to download them. Restart the game after the download. If an item is not listed, confirm whether the account is a current Steam owner covered by SEGA’s FAQ and then ask Steam Support to inspect the entitlement.

Disable the newest or recently updated mod, launch an unmodded test and restore mods one at a time. Keep a backup save from before changing the load order. Do not move that Workshop mod into the Complete Edition, where SEGA says original mods are incompatible.

The Complete Edition cannot be purchased
Store status may change while SEGA and platform holders investigate reported issues. Check the official Steam and SEGA listings again, verify your region and platform, and avoid unofficial downloads or keys that do not clearly state activation details.
Ownership, refunds and safe account practice
Delisting does not turn an existing Steam license into a time-limited trial: SEGA says existing owners can continue accessing and playing the game. It also does not create a right to refund an old purchase simply because a newer edition appears. Refund eligibility is governed by the platform’s current policy and the specific transaction.
- Keep the original receipt, key-activation email or gift record for support cases.
- Use Steam Guard and avoid entering your credentials into third-party “unlock” tools.
- Back up saves before changing editions, launch options or large mod collections.
- Do not assume a Complete Edition key will activate on Steam unless the listing explicitly says so.
A practical decision checklist
Use this short decision path before downloading:
- Did this Steam account own the original? Install the original Library entry and do not repurchase it.
- Do you need the original Workshop ecosystem? Stay with the original executable.
- Do you need a first-time purchase? Check the current Complete Edition listing and its platform, region, package and refund terms.
- Are DLC items missing? Inspect Steam’s DLC panel, allow downloads and then contact support if the entitlement is not present.
- Is the title missing entirely? Remove filters, check Hidden Games, verify the account and escalate to Steam Support.
- Are you on an older PC? Confirm current Steam-client and edition requirements, update drivers and allow sufficient storage before installing.
