Oblivion Remastered is a demanding Windows PC game. Before you buy or download it, confirm that your computer has a 64-bit, updated Windows installation, at least 16 GB of RAM, a qualifying graphics card, DirectX 12, and an SSD with 125 GB available. You can install it through Steam or through the Xbox App/Microsoft Store route, then launch it from that storefront’s library. The exact button names and subscription availability can vary by region and software version, so use the current store page for the final transaction details.
Check whether your PC can run Oblivion Remastered
The published requirements are substantial compared with those of the original 2006 release. The minimum specification is intended to establish compatibility, not to promise a particular frame rate, resolution, or graphics preset. Bethesda’s listing also says performance scales with better hardware, but it does not provide a frame-rate guarantee for either configuration.

| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 10 version 21H1 (build 10.0.19043) | 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 with updates |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-6800K | AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel Core i5-10600K |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 32 GB RAM |
| Graphics | AMD Radeon RX 5700 or NVIDIA GeForce 1070 Ti | AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 |
| DirectX | Version 12 | Version 12 |
| Storage | 125 GB available; SSD required | 125 GB available; SSD required |
These values come from the current Steam product listing. The listing describes 125 GB as available space, so treat it as free capacity on the target SSD rather than the total size of a nearly full drive. Leave additional room if Windows, updates, or other applications also need that disk. A hard disk drive does not satisfy the stated requirement.

- Open Windows’ system information or Settings to confirm that the operating system is 64-bit and that its build is at least Windows 10 version 21H1 (10.0.19043). An up-to-date Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation is the safer target.
- Check installed memory and confirm 16 GB is available at minimum; 32 GB matches the recommended specification.
- Identify the exact processor and graphics adapter, then compare their model names with the table. A similar-sounding model is not automatically equivalent.
- Use a DirectX diagnostic utility or Windows system information to verify DirectX 12 support.
- In File Explorer, check the free space on the SSD where the store will install the game. The requirement is 125 GB available before installation.
If one component falls below minimum, installation may still be offered by a storefront, but that does not establish that the game will run correctly. The official figures are compatibility requirements, not an independent performance test.

How the two hardware columns differ
The jump from minimum to recommended is meaningful. Memory doubles from 16 GB to 32 GB, while the processor moves from a Ryzen 5 2600X or Core i7-6800K to a Ryzen 5 3600X or Core i5-10600K. The graphics recommendation also rises from the Radeon RX 5700 or GeForce 1070 Ti class to the Radeon RX 6800 XT or GeForce RTX 2080 class. If your PC sits between those examples, compare each part separately instead of assuming that one newer component makes the whole system recommended.
Neither column tells you what resolution, visual preset, or frame rate to expect. A machine that meets minimum can be compatible while still requiring lower in-game settings. A recommended-class machine is a better starting point, but Bethesda does not promise 60 frames per second or any other target.
Choose a legitimate PC installation route
Bethesda identifies PC support through Steam and through the Xbox App/Microsoft Store ecosystem. The game is also identified as available on PC and through Game Pass in Bethesda’s launch information. Which route you can use, and whether a subscription includes the game in your region, can change; check the live catalog and account terms before starting a download.
Steam
On Steam, open the official game listing, purchase or redeem access with the account you intend to play on, and use the store’s library installation control. Steam handles the download, file location, updates, and launching from the library. The page linked above is the authoritative place to recheck the current requirements and edition information.
Xbox App or Microsoft Store
If you own the game through the Microsoft ecosystem or have an eligible subscription, use the Xbox App for PC or Microsoft Store account associated with that entitlement. Search for the game in the current catalog, select the install action offered for your account, choose an SSD destination when prompted, and start it from the Xbox App or Windows game library after the download completes. Store names, screens, and availability are subject to change, so do not rely on an old screenshot or a particular button label.
Bethesda’s supported-platforms article and its launch announcement are useful checks when an account, region, or subscription does not show the expected PC version.

Check ownership before downloading
Use one account consistently. The account that owns the Steam license, Microsoft purchase, or eligible subscription must be the account signed into the storefront. If the install option is missing, signing out and into an unrelated account or repeatedly switching storefronts can make the entitlement harder to diagnose. First verify the account, region, current catalog entry, and subscription status. Prices, editions, and subscription terms are live commercial details, so confirm them on the store instead of relying on an old listing or a quoted figure.
Install the game step by step
- Prepare the computer. Install pending Windows updates, close applications that could consume disk space, and connect the PC to reliable power and network service. Confirm the target SSD has at least 125 GB free, plus practical headroom for the operating system and future updates.
- Pick the storefront. Decide whether your license is coming from Steam or the Xbox App/Microsoft Store. Sign in to the account that owns the purchase or subscription. Avoid starting a second download through another account unless you deliberately want separate installations.
- Open the current product page. Verify that the listing is for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, not the original game or a platform that your PC cannot use. Check the live price, edition, and subscription terms because those details were not fixed by the hardware listing.
- Select the install destination. Choose an SSD with enough free capacity. If the storefront offers a library-location or drive selector, use it before confirming the download. Do not move the files to a hard disk afterward and assume the published SSD requirement is still met.
- Start and monitor the download. Let the storefront complete the download and its installation or verification phase. Keep the app open long enough for any queued update to finish. A progress bar reaching 100 percent does not necessarily mean a pending verification or patch has completed.
- Launch from the same library. Start the game using the library entry in the storefront that installed it. The first launch can take longer while files and configuration data are prepared. If the game closes immediately, use the troubleshooting sequence below instead of repeatedly reinstalling.
Neither the Steam listing nor Bethesda’s support material establishes a permanent sequence of identical screen labels. The reliable part of the process is the storefront choice, SSD destination, completed download, and launch from that library; individual wording can differ between app versions.
Plan storage instead of aiming for exactly 125 GB
The published figure is 125 GB available, not a recommendation to fill the drive until only a few megabytes remain. Windows, storefront caches, patches, and other applications also need working room. If the current SSD cannot provide that capacity, adding or replacing it is the relevant hardware remedy. A 1 TB internal SSD is a practical search size for someone who needs more space, but no particular model has been tested here, and storage capacity alone does not establish a frame-rate improvement.
Before pressing Install, check the free-space number on the exact volume selected in the storefront. A computer can have 125 GB free on one drive while the chosen library is on another nearly full drive. Recheck the destination after installation as well, because a successful first download does not reserve space for every later update.
Understand what the PC edition includes
The Steam description identifies the remaster as a single-player role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and Virtuos. It lists the Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine story expansions, along with additional downloadable content. That scope matters if you are deciding whether a separate purchase of the major story add-ons is needed: the Steam listing presents them as part of the remastered package.

Adjust graphics after the first launch
Bethesda documents adjustable in-game graphics settings. Open the game’s graphics or video options after reaching the main menu and change settings according to how your system behaves. The current options and their labels can vary by platform and software update, so use the menu shown by your installed version rather than a guide written for an earlier build.
A sensible first pass
- Start with the preset or automatic configuration offered by the game, then make one change at a time.
- If you experience hitching or unstable performance, lower demanding visual options before changing unrelated Windows settings.
- Apply a change, return to the game, and observe whether it improves consistency. Changing many options at once makes the cause harder to identify.
- Keep enough free SSD space for updates; deleting every byte of free capacity after installation can create problems for patching even though the published game requirement is 125 GB.
The official material does not provide frame-rate targets for the minimum or recommended systems. Avoid treating the table as a promise of 60 frames per second, a particular resolution, or a specific preset.
For Bethesda’s current explanation of the available controls, see the graphics-settings support article.

If the game will not start, Bethesda’s official first steps are deliberately basic. They address the most common causes without changing files unnecessarily.
- Recheck requirements. Confirm the operating system, processor, memory, graphics adapter, DirectX 12 support, SSD destination, and available space against the table. A full drive or unsupported hardware can prevent a successful start.
- Fully exit the storefront. Close Steam or the Xbox App for PC rather than leaving it minimized. Reopen it, wait for sign-in and update checks to finish, and try the library launch again.
- Restart Windows. A complete computer restart clears a stuck storefront process and applies updates that were waiting for reboot.
- Remove mods temporarily. If you added mods or other third-party changes, disable or remove them while diagnosing the unmodified installation. Bethesda’s launch troubleshooting guidance includes this branch because an add-on can stop the current game build from starting.
- Repair or verify the game files. Use the repair, verify, or equivalent file-check function offered by the storefront. It compares the local installation with the service’s copy and replaces damaged or missing files. The wording and location of this control differ between Steam and the Xbox App/Microsoft Store.
- Try administrator mode only when support calls for it. Administrator launching is a troubleshooting option, not a normal installation requirement. Bethesda’s instructions explain how to run the game as administrator and list the default installation paths for Steam and Xbox App/Microsoft Store installs. Follow that current article rather than guessing at an executable location: Run the game as administrator on PC.
Bethesda’s launch article may add or reorder steps as the game and storefronts are updated. Use the current sequence in What to do if the game will not launch on PC after completing the basic checks above. Do not treat administrator mode, mod removal, or a reinstall as a universal cure; use each only when the symptom and support instructions justify it.
Choose the next branch from the symptom
- No install option: Confirm that you are signed into the account that owns the game or has the relevant subscription, then check the supported-platform listing and regional catalog.
- Download stops or reports insufficient space: Recheck the selected SSD, clear enough capacity for the 125 GB requirement and update headroom, and restart the storefront before trying again.
- The game reaches a menu, then closes: First test with mods disabled and repaired files. If it continues, follow Bethesda’s current launch article rather than changing several system settings simultaneously.
- The game launches but looks or runs poorly: Use the in-game graphics controls, lower demanding options incrementally, and compare the hardware with the recommended column. The official requirements do not establish a guaranteed frame rate.
- The launcher reports that files are missing after moving the game: Return the installation to a storefront-managed library location or use that storefront’s move or repair feature. Manually copied folders may not be recognized by the account.
Keep the installation maintainable
Install updates through the storefront that owns the game, and keep that app available for launching and file repair. Before adding mods, make sure the unmodified game starts successfully; that gives you a known-good baseline if a later change causes a crash. Preserve free SSD capacity instead of filling the drive immediately after installation, because both Windows and future game updates need working room.

If you move the installation to another drive, use the storefront’s supported library-management feature where available. Copying folders manually can leave the account or launcher unable to locate the files, and the exact recovery path differs between Steam and the Xbox App/Microsoft Store.
When troubleshooting, change one variable at a time and record which storefront, drive, and account you used. This prevents a repair on one installation from being mistaken for a repair on another. It also makes it easier to tell whether the problem is entitlement-related, storage-related, caused by modified files, or caused by the PC falling below the published requirements.

What should I do if it will not launch?
First confirm the requirements, fully exit and reopen Steam or the Xbox App, and restart Windows. Then temporarily remove mods and use the storefront’s repair or file-verification function. Administrator mode is a support-directed troubleshooting step, not a routine requirement; follow Bethesda’s current launch article for the exact sequence.
Does the remaster include the major expansions?
The Steam description lists Shivering Isles, Knights of the Nine, and additional downloadable content as included with the remaster package.
Will recommended hardware guarantee 60 frames per second?
No. The official table describes hardware tiers but does not promise a frame rate, resolution, or preset. Use the in-game graphics controls and adjust demanding options incrementally.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much free space should I leave beyond 125 GB?
The published requirement is 125 GB available on an SSD. Leave additional practical headroom for Windows, storefront files, patches, and other applications; the official listing does not specify a larger fixed number.
Can I install through one storefront and launch through another?
Use the library of the storefront that owns and installed the game. Steam and the Xbox App/Microsoft Store manage separate licenses and files, so switching routes can produce missing-install or entitlement problems.
Should I run the game as administrator from the start?
No. Bethesda documents administrator mode as a troubleshooting option. Try the normal storefront launch first and use the administrator instructions only when the current support article calls for them.
Are exact store buttons and prices the same for everyone?
No. UI labels, editions, prices, and subscription terms can vary by region, account, and app version. Check the live product page instead of relying on an old screenshot.
The Bottom Line
Check the official hardware table before downloading: 64-bit Windows 10 version 21H1 or later, 16 GB RAM minimum, DirectX 12, a qualifying CPU and GPU, and an SSD with 125 GB free are the baseline. Steam and the Xbox App/Microsoft Store are the supported PC paths identified by Bethesda.
Install and launch from the same storefront, keep extra SSD capacity for updates, and tune graphics in-game rather than assuming a guaranteed frame rate. If startup fails, begin with Bethesda’s sequence—verify requirements, restart the storefront and Windows, disable mods, repair files, and use administrator mode only when directed.
