- You have never bought the game: purchase the Xbox digital edition in the Microsoft Store on the console, then install it.
- You bought it digitally before: sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account that made the purchase and install it from the game library.
- You are trying to use a disc: stop looking for a disc-install procedure; SEGA’s Xbox listing is digital-only.
- You want to play on a Windows PC: do not assume the Xbox purchase includes a PC copy. Microsoft says Xbox Play Anywhere applies only to participating games marked with the Play Anywhere indicator or included on its eligibility list. Prepare the console before downloading
Use the account that should own the license
Digital ownership is attached to the Microsoft/Xbox account used for the purchase. If another person bought the game, switching to an account that does not own it may leave only a purchase option visible. Sign in with the owning account before searching the store or library.
Confirm the platform and region
Search for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds in the Microsoft Store on the Xbox console and verify that the listing is for Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One and for your region. Store wording, bundles, and dashboard labels can change, so follow the current on-screen listing rather than an old menu name.
Allow time for the download and update
The console must download the game files and then any available game update. Keep the console connected to the internet while purchasing, installing, and updating. A digital license can be installed again later from the owning account’s library, but the console still needs to download the files.

If the Store displays a price even though you believe the game was purchased, do not immediately buy it again. First verify the signed-in account and look in the account’s purchase history. A different account, a regional storefront, or an incomplete transaction can make an owned title appear unavailable. The current Store page and library are the authoritative places to determine whether the console recognizes the license.
Install a new digital purchase from the Microsoft Store
- From the Xbox Home screen, open the Microsoft Store.
- Use Store search to find Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. Check the product page’s Xbox platform information and region before proceeding.
- Select the purchase option and complete checkout with the Microsoft account that should own the game. If the account already owns it, the page should offer an install or library action instead of asking you to buy it again.
- After the transaction is complete, choose the available install command. Microsoft’s general Xbox guidance supports buying a digital game through the console store and downloading it to the console.
- Open the Xbox download or queue view to confirm that the game is progressing. Leave the console connected until installation finishes.

The exact button names and location of the download queue may differ after an Xbox dashboard update. The important checks are that the purchase completed under the intended account, the title appears in the console’s queue or installed-games list, and the update has finished.
If you are installing on a console with more than one user, the purchase still belongs to the account that completed checkout. Other profiles may see the installed game depending on the console’s account and sharing configuration, but they do not become the purchasing account. For ownership questions, return to the account that paid for the title and inspect its library.
Install a copy you already own digitally
- Sign out of accounts that do not own the game, or switch to the Microsoft/Xbox account used for the original purchase.
- Open the console’s game library. Use the owned-games view or search for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
- Select the title and choose its install option. Microsoft describes digital purchases as downloadable and reinstallable from the owning account.
- Watch the queue until the base installation completes. If the title is listed but will not install, verify that the signed-in account is the purchaser and that the console is online.
- Apply every offered game update before launching online features or DLC.
If the game is absent from the library, search the Microsoft Store directly while signed in to the purchasing account. Confirm that the listing is the Xbox version and that the account’s region is correct. A missing library entry does not turn an Xbox disc into an alternative; SEGA does not list an Xbox disc release.
Reinstalling is also the appropriate route after deleting the game to free storage. Deleting the local files does not convert the license into a physical copy; the owning account remains the key to downloading the title again.

Update requirement for online modes and DLC
SEGA’s October 8, 2026 update notice states: “You must update to the latest version of the game to play online modes like World Match and access DLC.” That notice lists version 1.4.3 for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
After installation, select the game’s available update when Xbox presents one. If an online mode reports that an update is required, return to the game-management or download prompt shown by the console, let the update finish, and relaunch the game. The version number is tied to the October 8, 2026 SEGA notice; later updates may display a different number.
What happens if you skip the update?
- The game may still open for supported offline play, but SEGA specifically requires the latest version for online modes such as World Match.
- Downloadable content will not be accessible until the required version is installed.
- An update prompt can appear when you select an online feature rather than at the first launch, so an apparently successful installation is not proof that the game is current.
For that reason, treat the first launch as a two-part process: install the base game, then allow Xbox to finish the current update. If the console reports that the game is already current, the installed version should be sufficient for the features available at that time; if a newer update is offered later, install it before returning to online play or DLC.

Offline and local play
SEGA’s official game information lists local play for 1–4 players. Connect and sign in the controllers you intend to use, then choose the local or split-screen option shown in the game. The published four-player figure is a game-wide description; individual modes can impose their own restrictions.
Online play
SEGA lists online play for up to 12 players. Select the online feature from the game’s current menu after the update has completed. World Match is one example of an online mode covered by the latest-version requirement.
The official figures are not a promise that every platform and every mode has identical player options. SEGA notes a platform-specific local-communication exception for Nintendo Switch; that caveat does not change the Xbox installation route, but it is why the published player counts should be read as game-level figures rather than a guarantee for every configuration.
First-launch checks
- Confirm that the title reaches its main menu without an update warning.
- Open an offline or local option first if you want to verify the installation without entering an online match.

The comparison is therefore not between two Xbox buying formats. It is between buying the digital license now and reinstalling a license already attached to the correct account. Physical availability on PlayStation or Nintendo does not change either Xbox option.

Troubleshoot the common installation problems
The Store shows a price when you expected an install button
Check the signed-in Microsoft account. The account currently on the console may differ from the account that completed the original purchase. Sign in with the purchaser and search the Store or library again. If the ownership still does not appear, review the current Microsoft account purchase history and the product listing before attempting another transaction.
The game is not visible in the library
Search the Microsoft Store directly while using the owning account. Confirm that you are viewing Xbox content rather than a listing for another platform or region. Microsoft’s digital-download process supports reinstalling an owned game, but the available dashboard wording can change.
The download does not start
Open the console’s download queue and verify that the title is actually queued. If it is paused, resume it using the current queue control. Check the console’s network connection and available storage, then retry the install from the Store or library. These checks address the download process; they do not create a physical installation option for an Xbox-digital-only release.

The download appears stuck
Look at the queue rather than repeatedly selecting the Store purchase button. Confirm that the console remains connected and that another download is not occupying the queue. If the game was purchased moments earlier, allow the transaction to finish synchronizing with the library, then search again under the purchasing account. The exact controls depend on the current Xbox dashboard.
The game launches but World Match says an update is required
Exit the game and install the pending update. SEGA’s October 8, 2026 notice identifies Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One version 1.4.3 and requires the latest version for online modes. Relaunch only after the update has completed.
DLC is missing after purchase
First confirm that the base game and DLC are being accessed under the account that owns them. Then install the latest game update, because SEGA states that current-version software is required to access DLC. If the content is still absent, use the current Store or game-management prompts to verify that the add-on is installed.
I bought a physical copy for another console
A PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, or Nintendo Switch physical edition is not an Xbox license. The Xbox formats listed by SEGA are digital-only, so another console’s disc cannot be used to install the Xbox version.
I expected a PC copy with the Xbox purchase
Check the product page for the Xbox Play Anywhere indicator or Microsoft’s eligibility list.
