Android Auto is already integrated into supported Android phones, so you normally do not install a separate Android Auto app. Install or update Android Auto-compatible apps on your phone, sign in where required, connect the phone to a compatible car or stereo, and open the app launcher on the vehicle display.
Only apps whose developers have implemented Android Auto support can appear in that launcher. You can choose among compatible navigation, media, messaging and news apps, but Google’s current documentation does not establish one universal drag-and-drop method for rearranging every launcher icon. Ordering and customization can depend on the phone, Android version and head unit.

What you need before installing Android Auto apps
Android Auto runs from a supported Android phone and projects a driving-focused interface to a compatible car screen or aftermarket stereo. The phone supplies the apps and data connection; the vehicle display supplies the controls and visual interface.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- A supported Android phone. For wired Android Auto, Google’s current getting-started requirements specify Android 11.0 or higher. Requirements can change, so check the current Android Auto help information and your phone’s software support.
- A compatible car or stereo. Compatibility is determined by the vehicle or head-unit manufacturer as well as the phone.
- Active mobile data service. Navigation updates, streaming media, messages and other connected features may need data from the phone.
- A high-quality USB cable for Android Auto when using a wired connection. It must fit both ports and carry data, not just power.
- Wireless support, if you want cable-free projection. Wireless Android Auto requires a compatible phone and car, active data service and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support.
- A Google Account signed in on the phone with personalization enabled. Google says this is needed to see all compatible apps in Google Play.
Check the vehicle maker’s compatibility list before buying a cable or assuming that a particular phone can project wirelessly. A phone can meet Android requirements while the car still supports only wired projection, or does not support Android Auto at all.

Android Auto is integrated—install the apps, not Android Auto
Google’s wording is direct: “Android Auto is integrated into phones. You do not need to download it.” The practical installation task is therefore to put compatible services on the phone. Android Auto then makes eligible apps available when the phone is connected.
Do not assume that every app installed on the phone will be offered in the car. Android Auto support is controlled by the app developer. A normal phone app may have no Android Auto interface, may be restricted to a particular category, or may be unavailable on a specific Android version.
Install a compatible app on your phone
- Open Google Play on the phone. Search for the navigation, media, messaging or news service you want.
- Check the app’s current listing and compatibility information. Look for an explicit Android Auto-compatible experience or the developer’s support documentation. A listing that works on the phone is not, by itself, proof that it will appear in Android Auto.
- Tap Install, or Update if it is already installed. Keep the phone connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi while Play completes the download.
- Open the app once on the phone. Complete any first-run setup and grant only the permissions the service requires for its functions.
- Sign in before connecting to the car. Google specifically notes that media apps must be compatible with Android Auto and signed in on the phone. Some navigation, messaging and news services also hide their useful features until account setup is complete.
- Confirm your Google Account and personalization setting. Google says a signed-in Google Account with personalization enabled is needed to see all compatible apps in Google Play. The exact Settings labels can vary by Android release.
- Connect to the car and check the launcher. The app should be available only after Android Auto establishes a projection session; it may not create a separate phone-screen shortcut.
If the developer does not list Android Auto support, installing the app repeatedly will not make it appear. Use the developer’s support information to confirm whether support was removed, limited to a different app edition or unavailable in your region.
Choose wired or wireless Android Auto
| Connection | What it requires | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired | Supported phone, compatible car or stereo, active data service and a high-quality data-capable USB cable. Google’s current page specifies Android 11.0 or higher for wired Android Auto. | Works in vehicles that do not support wireless projection; the cable can charge the phone while connected. | The cable must remain connected, and a poor or charge-only cable can prevent the projection session from starting or make it unstable. |
| Wireless | Compatible phone and vehicle, active data service and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, plus the vehicle maker’s wireless-pairing procedure. | No cable across the console once pairing is complete. | Not every phone-and-car combination supports it. Compatibility and pairing behavior vary by vehicle and head unit. |
Wireless does not mean that any Android phone can project to any car. Confirm support for the exact phone model, Android release and vehicle trim. If the vehicle supports only wired Android Auto, a wireless adapter cannot be assumed to add official support.
Set up wired Android Auto step by step
- Park the vehicle. Complete initial setup while stationary, following the car or stereo’s safety instructions.
- Start the vehicle or switch on the head unit. Unlock the phone so that connection prompts can be displayed.
- Connect the phone to the vehicle’s Android Auto USB port with a high-quality USB cable that supports data. Some vehicles have multiple USB ports but only one enabled for projection.
- Accept the phone and vehicle prompts. Approve the requested Android Auto connection and select Android Auto on the car display if the system presents multiple projection choices.
- Wait for the Android Auto home screen. The first connection can take longer while the phone and vehicle establish permissions.
- Open the app launcher on the car display. Select the compatible navigation or media app you installed, or use the relevant messaging or news option.
If the phone only charges, try the vehicle’s designated data port and another known data-capable cable. A cable that charges a phone can still lack the data wiring Android Auto needs.

- Wide compatibility: This usbc cable is compatible with all USB-C devices, including the Galaxy series, Google Pixel series, iPhone series, tablets, USB-C SSDs, SSD enclosures, and more.
Set up wireless Android Auto
- Verify wireless compatibility first. The phone, vehicle or stereo and Android version must all support wireless Android Auto. The wireless requirement also includes 5 GHz Wi-Fi support.
- Enable the phone’s required wireless connections according to the vehicle manufacturer’s pairing instructions. Do not rely on a generic procedure when the head unit uses a manufacturer-specific setup screen.
- Put the vehicle’s infotainment system into its Android Auto or phone-projection pairing mode.
- Follow the prompts on both screens. Keep the phone unlocked during first-time pairing and approve Android Auto permissions when asked.
- Wait for the wireless Android Auto home screen, then open the launcher. The compatible apps installed and signed in on the phone should be available there.
Wireless pairing can fail even when wired Android Auto works because the car lacks 5 GHz Wi-Fi support or does not support wireless projection for that phone. Consult the vehicle documentation before changing phone settings or buying accessories.
Find and launch your apps on the car display
Once Android Auto is active, tap the app launcher on the vehicle display. It presents the apps that Android Auto recognizes as compatible for that connection. Select a navigation or media app to open it.

Navigation apps
Google says Android Auto can provide voice-guided navigation, estimated arrival times, live traffic information and lane guidance through Google Maps or another favorite navigation app. The exact options depend on the navigation service, its account state, data connection and current coverage.
Media apps
For music, podcasts or other media, the app must support Android Auto and be signed in on the phone. Android Auto also includes a recent-apps area that gives quick access to the most recently used media app. This is a shortcut to recent use, not a guarantee that every media service will be pinned permanently.
Messaging apps
Compatible messaging services can be exposed through Android Auto’s driving interface rather than their full phone interface. Availability depends on the developer’s Android Auto implementation and the account signed in on the phone.

News and other services
Google describes Android Auto support for music, messaging, news and more. The phrase “and more” does not mean unrestricted app access; each service must provide an approved compatible experience.

There are two fundamentally different causes: the app may not support Android Auto, or Android may have disabled it. Check the simpler explanations in this order.
1. The app is not Android Auto-compatible
Android Auto does not mirror the entire phone screen or expose arbitrary apps. If the app’s developer has not implemented Android Auto support, it will not appear in the car launcher regardless of how many times you reinstall it. Check the developer’s support information and the Google Play listing for the current compatibility status.
2. The app is signed out or incomplete
Open the app on the phone, finish its setup and sign in. Google specifically requires a signed-in phone app for media use in the car. A service that is installed but waiting for account setup may not provide a usable Android Auto entry.
3. Samsung battery management temporarily disabled it
Google says Samsung battery-management settings can temporarily disable an installed app. Open the app on the phone to re-enable it, then open the Android Auto launcher again.

If that does not restore it, go to the phone’s battery settings and turn off Auto disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep, whichever label your Samsung software shows. Reopen the app and reconnect Android Auto. Menu names can differ by Samsung model and software version.
4. The connection is not actually running Android Auto
A phone may be charging without projecting. Confirm that the car display shows the Android Auto interface, not only a charging indicator or another phone-projection mode. For wired connections, try the vehicle’s designated data port and a different high-quality cable.
5. The car or phone does not support the required mode
Wireless-only expectations are a common source of confusion. Confirm the exact vehicle and phone compatibility, including the 5 GHz Wi-Fi requirement for wireless projection. If the combination is supported only by cable, use wired Android Auto.
How to refresh the launcher after fixing an app
- Open the affected app on the phone and complete sign-in or re-enable it if battery management had disabled it.
- Make sure the phone has active data service and that the app is updated in Google Play.
- Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable, or end and restart the wireless projection session using the vehicle’s controls.
- When the Android Auto home screen returns, tap the app launcher and look for the app again.
- If it is still absent, verify Android Auto support with the developer. Do not treat an ordinary phone installation as proof of car-display compatibility.
Can you rearrange Android Auto app icons?
There is no single, universally documented drag-and-drop control that lets every Android Auto user freely reorder launcher icons. Google’s current guidance explains how to open the launcher, select compatible apps and use recent media apps, but it does not establish one manual reordering workflow across all phones, Android versions and car head units.

Practical ways to reach frequently used apps
- Use the recent-apps area for the media service you used most recently.
- Keep only the compatible services you actually use signed in and ready, so the launcher is easier to scan.
- Open the preferred navigation or media service before driving if the vehicle interface makes it the last-used app.
- Use the launcher’s current layout rather than expecting phone-home-screen folders or drag-and-drop ordering to transfer to the car.
These are access habits, not a promise that the car will preserve a custom order. The available controls remain device- and version-specific.
Choose the right USB cable for wired Android Auto
A high-quality USB cable is the physical accessory directly required for the wired setup described by Google. Match all four characteristics before troubleshooting the software.
| Characteristic | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Connector fit | Match the phone connector and the vehicle’s USB port. An adapter can introduce another failure point. | A physically incompatible connector cannot establish a data session. |
| Data capability | Use a cable specified for data transfer, not one intended only for charging. | Android Auto needs a data link; charging alone is insufficient. |
| Length | Choose enough length to reach the phone without tension, but avoid unnecessary slack across the console. | A strained plug can disconnect; excess cable can snag controls. |
| Vehicle-port compatibility | Use the port identified by the vehicle manufacturer for phone projection. | Some vehicles include charging-only USB ports alongside the Android Auto port. |
No particular cable brand or model is established for this setup. Replace a cable only after checking the port and connector, and test with a known data-capable cable if the phone charges without showing Android Auto.

App categories and what Android Auto exposes
| Category | Typical Android Auto function | Conditions to check |
|---|---|---|
| Navigation | Voice-guided directions, estimated arrival times, traffic information and lane guidance. | The navigation app must support Android Auto; maps and traffic can require active data. |
| Media | Music, podcasts and other audio playback through a driving-focused interface. | The app must be Android Auto-compatible and signed in on the phone. |
| Messaging | Access to supported conversations and message-related actions through the car interface. | Support depends on the developer and the account configured on the phone. |
| News | Compatible news services made available through Android Auto. | Only services with an Android Auto experience appear in the launcher. |
Category support does not guarantee that every feature from the phone app is available while projected. Android Auto uses a restricted, driving-oriented interface, and each developer decides which functions to expose.
A complete first-time setup checklist
- Confirm the car or stereo supports Android Auto and whether it supports wired, wireless or both connection types.
- Confirm the phone meets the current requirements; Google’s current wired guidance specifies Android 11.0 or higher.
- Make sure the phone has active data service.
- Sign in to the Google Account on the phone and enable personalization so compatible Play listings are visible.
- Install or update only apps that explicitly support Android Auto.
- Open each app on the phone, finish setup and sign in before connecting.
- For wired use, prepare a high-quality, data-capable USB cable and the vehicle’s projection-enabled port.
- For wireless use, verify 5 GHz Wi-Fi support on the compatible phone-and-car combination.
- Connect while parked, accept prompts and open the car-display app launcher.
- If an app is missing, check compatibility first, then sign-in state and Samsung battery-management settings where applicable.
What Android Auto cannot promise
- It cannot display every app installed on the phone.
- It cannot make an unsupported app compatible through a reinstall or a cable change.
- It cannot guarantee wireless projection for every Android phone and vehicle pairing.
- It cannot guarantee a universal manual icon-reordering control across devices and versions.
- It cannot use a charging-only USB cable as a substitute for a data-capable connection.
Understanding these limits prevents the most common setup mistake: treating Android Auto as a mirror of the phone. It is a curated projection system whose launcher contains only compatible services made available for the connected hardware and software.
