When you want one back, use My games & apps > Ready to install or the demo’s Store page.
The most practical storage plan is simple: use internal storage for demos you are playing now, a compatible USB drive as an archive or transfer location, and an Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card when you need supported Series X|S games to remain playable without moving them first.

How Xbox demo storage works
A demo is installed game content. After it downloads, Xbox treats it like other installed games and apps: it occupies drive space, receives any required updates, appears in your games library, and can be removed through the game-management controls. There is no special “temporary demo” area that automatically clears itself when you finish testing.
Xbox console guides list internal capacities of 512GB or 1TB, depending on the console. The advertised capacity is shared by the operating system, games, apps, updates and other data, so the free-space figure shown on your own console is the number that matters before every download.

Three actions are officially identified for gaining space:
- Uninstall games or demos you are not actively playing.
- Connect a compatible external hard drive.
- Add a storage expansion card designed for Xbox Series X|S.
For a small number of occasional trials, uninstalling is usually the least expensive approach. For a large rotating library, external storage can reduce repeated transfers, while a Series X|S expansion card is designed to keep supported current-generation titles ready to play.
Check space before you download a demo
Do this check before starting a queue of downloads. A demo’s Store listing shows the installation size for that title, but updates can require additional working room. Leave headroom instead of treating the listed size as the exact amount of free space you need.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open the console’s storage view from the Games & apps area.
- Note the available internal capacity, not the drive’s headline capacity.
- Open the demo’s Microsoft Store listing and read its displayed size.
- Reserve additional room for patches and other queued content.
- If the remaining space is tight, uninstall an inactive title or move content before starting the demo.
The Store’s current size display for the specific demo controls your decision. Sizes can differ substantially between titles, and a later update can change the amount of space required.
Install an Xbox demo from the Store or your library
Install from the Microsoft Store
- Open the Microsoft Store on the Xbox console.
- Search for the demo by title, or browse the game’s listing until the demo edition is shown.
- Open the correct demo page and verify that it is the edition you intend to test.
- Select Get, Install or the equivalent download button shown for your account.
- Choose the destination drive if Xbox offers more than one eligible location.
- Monitor the queue in My games & apps while the demo downloads and installs.
Xbox also supports buying and downloading digital games and content directly from the console or from xbox.com. A demo that is free may still require you to sign in with the account that is meant to use it.
Install from your owned or library list
- Open My games & apps.
- Go to the section that lists your library or owned content.
- Find the demo and select it.
- Choose Install, then confirm the storage location if prompted.
If the title is not currently installed, Xbox may place it in the Ready to install list. Availability is not permanent: a publisher can remove a demo, or the listing can be unavailable in a particular account region.

Keep internal storage for demos you are actively testing
Internal storage is the most convenient location for a demo you expect to launch repeatedly. It avoids an extra move operation and gives you the normal install path for current console content. Instead of keeping every trial installed, use a short rotation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA practical rotation system
- Testing now: Keep these demos installed on the internal drive.
- Maybe later: Remove them when you stop playing, provided you are comfortable downloading them again.
- Finished or rejected: Uninstall them immediately after recording any notes you need.
- Large but uncertain: Consider placing the content on a compatible external drive if you expect to revisit it and the title supports that storage workflow.
Review the installed list periodically rather than waiting for an installation error. A deliberate rotation prevents several abandoned demos from consuming the space needed for a game update or a new trial.
Uninstall a demo safely
- Open My games & apps and locate the installed demo.
- Highlight the title and press the controller’s Menu button.
- Open Manage game and add-ons or the equivalent management command.
- Choose the uninstall option. If Xbox offers Uninstall all, review the listed content before confirming.
- Confirm removal and wait for the title to disappear from the installed list.
- Recheck the storage view to verify that the expected space has been released.
Dashboard wording can change with software updates, but the management route remains attached to the selected game. Removing a demo deletes its installed files; it does not permanently revoke your ability to download the listing if the demo remains available.
Download a removed demo again later
When a demo is still available to your account and region, reinstalling it is normally a fresh download.
- Open
My games & apps > Ready to install. - Scroll or search for the removed demo.
- Select the title and choose Install.
- Alternatively, open the demo’s Microsoft Store page and select its install button.
- Choose the destination drive if prompted, then monitor the download queue.
Microsoft Support specifically directs Xbox One users to My games & apps > Ready to install when a game or app is not currently visible on the console. The same library-first approach is useful for managing removed demo content, although current dashboard labels can differ by console generation and software update.
When reinstalling is not possible
A removed demo may not appear if it has been delisted, is no longer licensed for your account, or is unavailable in your region. In that case, the Ready to install list and the Store search result are the authoritative checks. Do not assume that a demo can be recovered indefinitely simply because it was downloaded once.

Understand what uninstalling does to saves and settings
Uninstalling is not the same as preserving every byte of a demo’s data. Microsoft’s technical documentation distinguishes a title’s persistent local storage from game saves: the title-specific local storage exists for the lifetime of the installation, is removed when the title is uninstalled, and is not automatically restored when the title is installed again.
That means you should not assume that a local option, cache, configuration file or demo-specific progress record will survive removal. The exact behavior is title-dependent. Before uninstalling a demo, check the title’s own support information if preserving local progress matters to you.
Some games support progress through Xbox-connected or cloud storage, and that progress can behave differently from local demo data. A cloud-supported save may be available after reinstalling and signing in, while a local-only setting or cache may be gone. The game’s documentation, rather than the fact that it is a demo, determines which case applies.

| Compatible USB external hard drive or SSD | Archiving or moving less-used titles | Some content can remain on the drive; Series X|S-optimized titles generally must be moved back to internal storage or a compatible expansion card before play. | Lower-cost capacity can be useful for storage, but a move may be required before launching a current-generation optimized title. |
| Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card | Keeping supported Series X|S titles ready on added storage | Designed as the dedicated expansion route alongside the console’s internal drive. | Higher hardware cost than simply uninstalling; verify the card model and console compatibility. |
When USB storage makes sense
A compatible USB drive is useful when your priority is keeping less-used titles available without downloading them again. It can act as an archive or a transfer destination while you rotate active demos on the internal drive.
Do not treat every external drive as a launch location for every title. Storage guidance notes that Series X|S-optimized games stored on USB generally need to be moved back to the internal drive or a compatible expansion card before they can be played. If a demo is optimized for Series X|S, plan for that move rather than assuming USB playback.
When an expansion card makes sense
The Series X|S storage expansion card is the dedicated option when you want additional space that can keep supported Series X|S titles ready to play. It is most useful for people who test many large current-generation games and do not want to shuttle them between USB storage and the console before each session.

Fix common demo-storage problems
The demo will not install because of insufficient space
- Open the storage view and identify the largest inactive games or apps.
- Uninstall a finished demo or another title you are not actively playing.
- Check the download queue for duplicate or paused content.
- Allow extra room beyond the Store’s displayed demo size for updates.
- If you routinely run short of space, move archive content to a compatible USB drive or add a Series X|S expansion card.
The demo disappeared after you removed it
Open My games & apps > Ready to install and search the list. If it is absent, search the Microsoft Store while signed in to the account that originally obtained it. If neither location shows the title, it may no longer be offered for that account or region.
The demo is on USB storage but will not launch
Confirm whether it is a Series X|S-optimized title. Such titles commonly need to be moved to the internal drive or a compatible expansion card before play. Use the game’s management screen to move it, then try launching it from the new location.
Progress or settings are missing after reinstalling
Uninstalling removes title-specific persistent local storage, and Microsoft says that storage is not automatically restored on reinstall. Check whether the demo supports Xbox-connected or cloud progress and review the title’s support information for its save behavior. Local-only data may not be recoverable.
The console still shows little free space after uninstalling
Wait for the uninstall operation to finish, then reopen the storage view. Check whether another copy, add-on or queued update remains installed. If the title was moved rather than removed, it may still occupy the external drive while internal space has changed less than expected.

Quick Recap
A repeatable routine for testing many demos
- Measure first: Check free internal capacity and the Store size of the demo you want to test.
- Install only a manageable batch: Keep enough headroom for updates and normal console use.
- Record your decision: Mark each demo as active, revisit-later or finished.
- Remove finished trials: Uninstall them from the management screen instead of letting them accumulate.
- Archive selectively: Use a compatible USB drive for titles you expect to revisit, while remembering that Series X|S-optimized games may need to move back before play.
- Use expansion storage for ready-to-play capacity: Choose a compatible Series X|S card when moving optimized titles repeatedly is more disruptive than the hardware cost.
- Protect important progress: Verify a demo’s save model before uninstalling if you may want to continue later.
- Reinstall from the library: Use
Ready to installor the Store page, and recognize that delisted or region-limited demos may not return.
What to remember
- Xbox demos occupy normal game storage after installation.
- The console’s displayed free-space figure and the Store’s current size listing should guide every download.
- Uninstalling inactive demos is Xbox’s simplest no-cost way to reclaim space.
My games & apps > Ready to installis the key place to look for removed Xbox One games and apps.- Uninstalling removes title-specific persistent local storage; reinstalling does not automatically recreate it.
- A compatible USB drive is primarily an archive or transfer solution when a title cannot run directly from it.
- An Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card is the dedicated added-storage route for keeping supported optimized titles ready to play.
