For Total War: ROME REMASTERED on Windows, the safest supported workflow is: subscribe to a mod in Steam Workshop, activate it in the game’s Pre-Game Options Mod Manager, and keep a record of the active list for every campaign. A Workshop subscription downloads the files, but it does not automatically make every subscribed mod active. Treat a modded save as tied to its enabled mods: Feral Interactive warns that disabling any mod used for a save can make that save impossible to load.
What the safe mod workflow looks like
There are three separate actions that are easy to confuse:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Subscribe: Steam Workshop downloads and keeps the item associated with your account.
- Enable: the remaster’s launcher Mod Manager loads the item when the game starts.
- Uninstall: you remove the item from the launcher and Workshop, then clean up any remaining files if necessary.
Keeping those actions separate is the foundation of safe mod management. You can remain subscribed to several items while activating only one, or a small compatible group, for testing. Conversely, a save created with active mods may remain dependent on that exact mod set even if the files are still installed.
Recommended Free Tools
Feral’s official FAQ gives the key warning: “Mods have not been tested by Feral, and may cause stability issues.” The launcher and Steam provide the management and recovery tools, but a Workshop listing is not a guarantee that a mod works with your current game build, another mod, or an existing campaign.

Before you install anything
Confirm the game and platform
The concrete procedure below uses the Windows Steam release of Total War: ROME REMASTERED. Other Total War remasters or storefronts can use different launchers and folder locations. If the title is not the Steam edition, do not assume that Workshop subscription or the same Mod Manager controls apply.
Start from a known-good game
Launch the game once without mods and make sure it reaches the main menu. This gives you a clean reference point. If the unmodded game already crashes or fails to start, solve that problem before introducing Workshop files; otherwise you will not know whether a later failure is mod-related.
Read the Workshop description first
Before clicking Subscribe, read the item’s description for:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Required dependencies or companion mods.
- The game version or build the author supports.
- Compatibility warnings and known conflicts.
- Whether the item changes campaigns, saved games, user interface elements, graphics, or only a temporary test feature.
- Installation or activation instructions that differ from the normal launcher process.
Do not infer compatibility from a mod’s title or its subscriber count. The description and update notes are the relevant evidence for your current build.
Create a simple campaign record
For any campaign you care about, record the date, game build, and every enabled mod. A text file or note with the exact Workshop names is enough. Also keep one separate campaign that remains vanilla. The vanilla campaign is a stable control case and gives you a way to play while diagnosing a modded installation.

Install a Workshop mod in Steam
Steam Workshop is the preferred route for supported remasters because Steam handles downloading the subscribed item and presents it to the game’s launcher. Use the following Windows sequence for ROME REMASTERED:
- Open Steam and find the game. In the Steam Library, select Total War: ROME REMASTERED.
- Open the Community Hub. Use the game’s Community Hub link, then choose the Workshop section.
- Choose the mod. Open its Workshop page and read the description, version notes, dependencies, and compatibility information before subscribing.
- Click Subscribe. Steam downloads the Workshop item automatically. Subscription is the installation step for this supported Steam workflow; you do not need to copy the downloaded archive into the game directory.
- Wait for Steam to finish. Let Steam complete the Workshop download before launching the game. If the item is still downloading, the launcher may not list it yet.
- Launch the game and open the launcher controls. In the Pre-Game Options screen, open the Mod Manager.
- Enable the mod. Select the Workshop entry and enable it. A subscription alone does not mean that every subscribed item must be active.
- Start with a controlled test. Launch a new campaign or a safe test session with only that mod, unless the description identifies a dependency that must also be enabled. Confirm that the expected feature appears before adding anything else.
If the mod is not listed after Steam reports that the subscription is complete, close the game, confirm that Steam is using the same account and installation, and check the Workshop item’s notes for a required dependency or supported-build limitation. Do not immediately download a second copy from an unrelated site; duplicate files make later diagnosis harder.
Use the launcher Mod Manager as the control point
Subscription is not activation
The Mod Manager is where you decide which subscribed entries are active for the next launch. This lets you keep downloaded mods available without loading all of them at once. It also makes a controlled test possible: activate one item, launch, and then add the next only after the first behaves as expected.
Change one variable at a time
When building a mod set, begin with one mod or a small group that the author describes as compatible. Record the order in which you enabled items, even if the launcher does not require a manual load-order adjustment. If a problem appears after adding a new entry, you can return to the last known-good configuration instead of guessing among a dozen simultaneous changes.
Disable for testing, not as a way to rescue every save
Turning an entry off in the Mod Manager is a reversible test for a new or unused campaign. It is not automatically safe for a campaign that was saved while that entry was active. Feral states: “If you save a game while using one or more mods, you must always have those mods enabled while playing that saved game.” It further warns: “If you disable any of those mods, you will be unable to load the saved game.” Apply that rule to campaign-affecting mods even when the game appears to launch normally without them.

Workshop subscription versus manual file copying
Manual installation can be appropriate only when a particular mod’s instructions require it. It gives you more direct control over the files, but it also creates more opportunities for stale, misplaced, or duplicated files. For a supported Steam Workshop item, subscription is the lower-risk default.

|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Workshop subscription | Steam downloads the item and keeps it associated with the Workshop entry; the launcher can expose it to the Mod Manager. | An update can change the files while a campaign is in progress, and the Workshop description may still contain compatibility limits. | Supported remaster mods whose authors publish them through Workshop. |
| Manual file copying | Direct control over which files and versions are present. | Files can be copied to the wrong directory, left behind after removal, or mixed with a newer Workshop version. | Only when the mod’s own instructions specifically require a manual installation. |
Do not use both methods for the same mod unless the author explicitly requires that arrangement. If the launcher shows duplicate-looking entries, stop and identify which installation method supplied each one before changing files.
Protect your saved campaigns
Keep vanilla and modded campaigns separate
A vanilla campaign has maximum portability: it does not depend on a Workshop list that may change or disappear. A modded campaign provides the features you wanted, but its ability to load depends on maintaining the required enabled entries. Use clearly different save names and keep your campaign record next to your notes so you do not accidentally open a modded save with a stripped-down profile.
Do not remove a campaign mod mid-save
If a campaign was saved with one or more mods enabled, leave those same mods enabled whenever you play that save. Unsubscribing, deleting, or disabling one can make the save unopenable according to Feral’s guidance. This is especially important for mods that alter campaign rules, factions, units, maps, or other data written into the campaign state.
Plan an intentional retirement
When you want to end a modded campaign, finish it or preserve it as an archived profile before experimenting with removal. Start a new vanilla campaign rather than using the old save as a test case. If a Workshop item becomes unavailable, do not assume that a replacement with a similar name can satisfy the save’s dependency; the documented requirement is to keep the original enabled.

Handle game updates and mod updates
Expect a change in compatibility after a patch
A game update can alter files that a mod relies on. A Workshop item may also update independently. When a previously stable campaign stops loading or the game begins crashing after an update, treat the timing as a compatibility problem rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same files.
Use a staged update procedure
- Write down the new game build and the active mod list.
- Open the Mod Manager and deactivate the mod set for a new test session. Do not disable required entries for a saved campaign that you still need to load.
- Launch the unmodded game and check whether it reaches the main menu and can start a fresh test.
- Read each Workshop description and its latest notes for a build requirement, dependency change, or incompatibility notice.
- Re-enable one mod or one documented compatible group at a time.
- After each change, use the same test scenario and note the result. Stop at the first failure so you know which change introduced it.
This process separates a game-build problem from a particular mod or combination. Keep the last working configuration recorded; it is the fastest way back when a later Workshop update causes trouble.
Consider an older beta only when it is available and appropriate
If a mod was built for an older game build, SEGA Support’s documented workflow points to Steam’s Properties window and its Betas tab, where an available version can be selected. The availability of rollback branches depends on the title and publisher; there may be no suitable branch for your remaster. A beta is a compatibility choice, not a universal fix, and it can prevent you from receiving current patches. Record the selected branch along with the mod list so you can reproduce the setup.
Disable, delete, and unsubscribe: choose the least destructive action
| Action | Where to do it | Effect | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disable | Pre-Game Options → Mod Manager | Stops the entry from loading on the next launch while leaving the subscription available. | You are testing a new setup or troubleshooting an unused campaign. |
| Delete | Mod Manager trash-can control, when offered | Removes the mod through the launcher’s management interface. | You want to remove an installed entry as part of a clean-up. |
| Unsubscribe | Steam Workshop page | Stops Steam from maintaining that Workshop subscription. | You no longer want the item or need to prevent its Workshop updates. |
For a complete clean-up, use the actions in that order as appropriate: deactivate the entry, use the launcher’s trash-can control when available, and unsubscribe from the Workshop item in Steam. Do not perform these steps against a campaign that requires the mod unless you have accepted that the save may no longer load.

SEGA Support recommends checking more than the visible launcher list when a problem persists. After deactivating or deleting mods and unsubscribing from the relevant Workshop items:
Best Value
- Inspect the game’s
datadirectory for files belonging to the removed mod. - Inspect Steam’s
steamapps/workshop/contentdirectory for remaining Workshop content. - Remove only leftovers you can confidently identify as belonging to the mod and that the mod’s instructions permit removing. If you cannot identify a file, leave it in place and proceed to verification rather than deleting core game data at random.
- In Steam Library, right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Local Files and select Verify Integrity of Game Files….
- Allow Steam to complete the check, then launch the game without mods.
If the problem disappears after you unsubscribe and delete the mod, SEGA says it is almost certainly mod-related. If the unmodded game still fails after verification, continue with the game’s normal support process rather than reinstalling the same Workshop item.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The mod does not appear in Mod Manager
- Confirm that Steam shows the item as subscribed and has finished downloading.
- Close and relaunch the game so the Pre-Game Options screen refreshes.
- Check the Workshop description for a dependency or a supported-build requirement.
- Verify that you are running the same Steam game edition for which the item was published.
The game crashes or becomes unstable after enabling a mod
- Deactivate the newest mod or the entire set in Mod Manager.
- Test the unmodded game, then re-enable one entry at a time.
- Check each description for a conflict or version note.
- If the issue remains, delete the problematic entry with the launcher’s trash-can control, unsubscribe in Steam, inspect the documented folders, and verify the game files.
Feral has not tested Workshop mods, so stability problems are a known possibility rather than evidence that Steam or the remaster itself is defective.
A saved campaign will not load
First compare the save’s recorded mod list with the currently enabled list. Re-enable every mod that was active when the save was created, including dependencies. Feral’s explicit warning means that disabling any of those mods can prevent the save from loading. Do not use the broken save as a test while removing entries; test changes with a new campaign instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe game worked until a patch or Workshop update
- Record the new game build and identify which Workshop items updated.
- Test an unmodded launch.
- Read the affected mod’s current notes and dependency requirements.
- Rebuild the active list one item at a time.
- If the author requires an older build and Steam offers one, review the Properties → Betas option and document the selected branch.
Unsubscribing did not solve the problem
Unsubscribe does not prove that every local file has disappeared. Follow the clean-up sequence: deactivate and delete through Mod Manager, inspect the game’s data directory and Steam’s steamapps/workshop/content directory, then run Steam’s Verify Integrity of Game Files… command. Test the game before resubscribing to anything.
A repeatable safe-management routine
- Baseline: confirm the unmodded game launches and keep a vanilla campaign.
- Research: read the Workshop description, dependencies, compatibility notes, and supported build.
- Install: subscribe in Steam and wait for the download to finish.
- Activate: enable the item in Pre-Game Options → Mod Manager.
- Test: use a new campaign or safe test session with one mod or a documented compatible group.
- Record: note the game build, active list, and date before beginning a long campaign.
- Maintain: after a game or Workshop update, test the unmodded game and reintroduce mods individually.
- Recover: deactivate, delete, unsubscribe, inspect the documented folders, and verify Steam files when a mod causes trouble.
- Preserve saves: never disable or remove a mod required by a campaign you still intend to load.
Choosing between common management options
| Decision | Choose this when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Workshop subscription | The remaster and mod are supported through Steam Workshop. | Simpler installation and update handling, but Workshop changes can affect compatibility. |
| Manual copying | The mod’s instructions explicitly require files outside Workshop. | More control, but higher risk of stale, misplaced, or leftover files. |
| Disable in Mod Manager | You are testing a configuration or changing an unused campaign. | Reversible, but unsafe for a save that depends on the mod. |
| Delete and unsubscribe | You want a complete removal or need to isolate a fault. | Thorough cleanup, but a dependent saved campaign may no longer load. |
| Current game build | You want current patches and the normal supported release. | A legacy mod may not yet be compatible. |
| Older beta branch | Steam offers a branch matching an older mod or save requirement. | May omit current fixes, and availability is title- and publisher-dependent. |
| Vanilla campaign | You need maximum stability and portability. | You give up the features supplied by the mod list. |
| Mod-dependent campaign | You accept the maintenance required by a specific feature set. | You must preserve the enabled mods and compatible build. |
What to remember
For a Steam-supported Total War remaster, subscribe in Workshop, activate through the game’s Mod Manager, and treat the enabled list as part of the campaign’s requirements. Keep a vanilla fallback, add mods incrementally, and record the build and active entries before committing to a long campaign. When an update or mod causes trouble, remove the variable systematically, inspect the documented folders, and run Steam’s file-verification tool instead of repeatedly layering new installations over an uncertain one.
