To use a microSD card for Steam Deck games, insert it, format it in Steam > Settings > System > Format SD Card, then choose the card from Steam > Settings > Storage when installing or managing games. Formatting initializes the card and can erase its existing files, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
Valve’s supported baseline is a reputable UHS-I, class 3 or faster microSD card. Faster UHS-II and UHS-III cards may function, but Steam Deck does not support their higher transfer speeds.

What you need before setup
Prepare the card and the Deck before opening Steam:
- Use a reputable microSD card rated UHS-I, class 3 or better.
- Back up photographs, documents, or other files on the card. Steam Deck formatting is an initialization operation, not a non-destructive game-library setup.
- Keep the Deck powered and avoid removing the card while formatting or writing data.
- Install pending SteamOS updates if practical. Menu wording can differ between SteamOS releases, but the storage functions remain in Steam’s Settings area.
Valve’s Steam Deck OLED specifications identify the slot as supporting UHS-I and SD, SDHC, and SDXC media. The OLED specification page is hardware documentation for that model; it should not be read as a statement that every other Deck specification is identical.

Format a microSD card for Steam Deck
Steam requires the card to be formatted for the Deck before it can use it as a game-library location. The official path is:
- Insert the microSD card into the Deck’s card slot.
- Open the Steam menu.
- Choose Settings, then System.
- Select Format SD Card.
- Read the warning and confirm only after checking that anything you need from the card is backed up.
- Leave the Deck alone while formatting completes. Valve notes that the operation can take a few minutes.
Afterward, open Steam > Settings > Storage. The card should appear as a separate storage location alongside the Deck’s internal drive. If it does not, do not repeatedly format it; use the detection checks below first.
What format does Steam Deck use?
Valve’s Portuguese-Brazil FAQ says cards inserted in a Steam Deck are formatted as ext4 with casefolding and that the Deck handles the appropriate formatting. That is an attributed, translated description of Valve’s localized FAQ rather than an English-language quotation. The practical consequence is that the normal Steam formatting command is preferable to preparing the card in a desktop operating system and assuming it is ready.

- Open Steam > Settings > Storage and confirm that the microSD card is listed with available space.
- When starting a game installation, use Steam’s storage-location selector to choose the card rather than the internal drive.
- Confirm the destination and begin the download.
- Return to Settings > Storage if you need to check which drive contains the installation or how much room remains.
The exact confirmation wording and layout can change with SteamOS and Steam client updates. Look for the storage destination, library location, or drive selector; the important choice is the card’s storage entry, not a particular button name.
Move an installed game between internal storage and the card
Steam’s Storage screen is the control center for connected game-library locations. To move an existing installation:
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Select the drive that currently contains the game.
- Choose the game and look for Steam’s move or storage-location control.
- Select the other drive, such as the formatted microSD card, and confirm the operation.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before launching the game or removing the card.
SteamOS versions can present the move command and confirmation text differently. If no move control is offered for a particular entry, check that both drives are mounted in Storage and that the destination has enough free space; do not interrupt a transfer by ejecting the card.
Moving is different from reinstalling
A move keeps the game’s existing files and changes their library location. Uninstalling removes the installation, while reinstalling downloads it again. Check the selected source and destination carefully before confirming, especially when internal storage is nearly full.

Manage capacity and game locations
Use Steam > Settings > Storage regularly rather than relying only on the free-space indicator in the Library. The screen lets you see connected storage and manage the libraries associated with each location.
- Choose a default destination: When several storage locations are available, set or select the card for new installations through Steam’s storage controls.
- Check before downloading: Confirm free space on the selected drive. A game’s download size and its final installed footprint are not always the same.
- Keep related files together: If a game is on the card, its updates and installed downloadable content should use the same recognized library location unless Steam presents another option.
- Remove deliberately: Use Steam’s uninstall command when you want to reclaim space. Do not format the whole card merely to remove one game.
- Leave working space: A nearly full card has less room for updates and temporary installation data. Keep a practical buffer instead of filling every available byte.
Steam’s interface is the authority for the current SteamOS release. If a library disappears from the Storage list, solve the storage-detection problem before attempting to reinstall every game.
Which microSD card standard should you buy?
Valve’s guidance establishes a compatibility floor, not a ranked product list. Use the following criteria when comparing cards:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Specification | What Valve’s guidance establishes | What it means for a purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Bus type | UHS-I is supported. | Choose a reputable UHS-I card. |
| Speed class | Class 3 or better is the supported baseline. | Do not choose a card below class 3 for this use. |
| UHS-II or UHS-III | Expected to work, but the Deck does not support their higher transfer speeds. | Paying for the faster bus does not unlock those speeds on the Deck. |
| Media format | Valve’s OLED specifications list SD, SDHC, and SDXC support through the UHS-I slot. | Check the card’s stated format and capacity against the model and your needs. |
| Brand, model, price, and capacity ranking | Not established by Valve’s compatibility guidance. | Compare verified authenticity, warranty, capacity, and price per usable gigabyte yourself; no single best model follows from the specification alone. |
Capacity is a planning decision: larger cards hold more games, while smaller cards cost less and may suit a focused library. The available evidence does not establish a universal best capacity, current prices, or comparative load-time tests, so treat vendor performance claims as product-specific rather than as Steam Deck guarantees.

When a game appears uninstalled even though its files are on the card
This is different from a card that is not detected at all. If the card is visible in Settings > Storage and the game files remain in the expected library location, Steam may need to be pointed at that installation again.
Try Steam’s general library-recognition procedure
- Leave the card inserted and confirm that its library location is visible in Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Start installing the same game and select the storage location where its existing files remain.
- Allow Steam to examine the location. Steam Support’s general article says that beginning installation while the files are in the proper place can let the client recognize them instead of downloading everything again.
- Check the download activity and the game’s installed status before launching it.
This is general Steam-client guidance, not a Steam Deck-specific guarantee. SteamOS releases and library layouts can affect whether recognition succeeds. If Steam cannot validate the files, the remaining choices may include repairing the library or downloading missing data.
If the files are actually gone
A game entry can remain in your account while its local installation has been removed. In that case, recognition is impossible because there are no complete files to discover; install the game again to the storage location shown in Steam.

If Steam Deck does not detect the microSD card
First separate detection from game-library indexing: a card that does not appear in Storage cannot be fixed by reinstalling a game.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Remove and reinsert the card carefully, then reopen Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Check whether the card was successfully formatted through Steam > Settings > System > Format SD Card. Do not repeat the format if the card contains files you have not backed up.
- Verify that the card meets the UHS-I, class 3-or-better baseline. UHS-II and UHS-III labels do not provide extra Deck transfer speed, but the bus type alone should not be treated as a reason to bypass the normal formatting process.
- If the card is visible but a library is missing, work from the Storage screen and its listed locations rather than formatting immediately.
- If the card remains absent after reinsertion and the normal Steam settings path, test whether the problem follows the card or the Deck using another known-good storage setup. Preserve data before any destructive step.
Repeated formatting is not a general-purpose detection repair: it erases the card’s existing contents and should be reserved for a backed-up card that you intend to initialize again.
Safe day-to-day use
Before removing the card
Close any game using files on the card and wait for downloads, updates, or moves to finish. Removing storage during a write can leave an installation incomplete or make the library harder for Steam to recognize.
After a SteamOS update
Check Settings > Storage after major system or client changes. If the card is listed and the library is present, no reformat is required simply because SteamOS was updated. Formatting is an initialization step, not routine maintenance.

A card formatted and used by one Deck is not a portable, independent backup of the games. Keep account ownership, library location, and the card’s file system in mind before moving it between devices; back up personal files separately and let the receiving Deck identify the card through its own Steam storage controls.
Repair and replacement considerations
Most installation and management tasks need no repair accessory: they are handled in Steam’s Settings menus. If a slot or Deck hardware fault is suspected, stop treating repeated formatting as a software solution. Valve’s localized FAQ identifies a relationship with a repair-parts and guide provider, but that detail is relevant to hardware repair rather than ordinary microSD setup. Diagnose whether the failure is the card, the library data, or the Deck before opening the hardware.
Quick Recap
A reliable workflow in one pass
- Back up anything important from the card.
- Insert the microSD card.
- Format it through Steam > Settings > System > Format SD Card.
- Wait for completion and verify the card in Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Select the card when installing a new game or use Steam’s storage controls to move an existing one.
- If a game is marked uninstalled, keep its files in place and try Steam’s general installation-and-recognition procedure before downloading again.
- If the card itself is missing, troubleshoot detection separately and protect the data before any further format.
