Install a GPU water block only after confirming that it fits your exact graphics-card PCB. Mount it with the block’s own hardware and thermal materials, fill the loop with only the pump and PSU energized, and leak-test for the period specified by the manufacturers—Corsair’s guidance for its cited blocks is about 24 hours—before reconnecting power to the motherboard, graphics card, or drives.

There is no universal screw pattern, thermal-pad thickness, port direction, thread limit, or leak-test pressure for every block. The safe procedure is therefore a controlled sequence built around the manual for your particular card and block.

What you need to verify before removing the stock cooler

Record the graphics card’s complete manufacturer and model name, including any factory variant, revision, or PCB identifier shown on the card or its documentation. Cards using the same GPU family can have different circuit boards, mounting holes, memory layouts, and power-delivery components. A block that fits one version may damage or fail to cool another.

Use the block maker’s current compatibility list or configurator. Corsair directs buyers to its compatibility list, while Alphacool provides a GPU configurator. If the exact card is not listed, do not infer compatibility from the GPU name alone. Contact the block maker before disassembly.

Read the current installation manual from start to finish. Identify the correct screws, washers, standoffs, thermal-pad locations and thicknesses, paste requirements, port choices, plugs, and tightening instructions. Generic installation videos cannot establish those values for a different PCB.

Check warranty implications

Removing a factory cooler can affect the graphics-card warranty. Corsair warns that removing the original cooler may void a warranty and that damage caused by user error is not covered by its guide. Warranty rules differ by manufacturer, region, and model, so check the graphics-card maker’s terms before opening the card and save proof of purchase and the original hardware.

Prepare a clean, controlled work area

  • Shut the computer down through the operating system, switch the PSU off, unplug the AC cable, and press the case power button once to discharge residual power.
  • Work on a clean, stable, nonconductive surface with bright lighting. Keep drinks and loose metal objects away from the work area.
  • Prepare the exact block, its supplied mounting hardware, the specified thermal pads and paste, compatible fittings, tubing, plugs, coolant, paper towels or absorbent pads, and a suitable 24-pin ATX jumper.
  • Use a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol to remove old thermal paste when the card and block instructions call for it.
  • Keep a tray or labeled containers for screws. Record where each screw came from; screws that look similar can have different lengths.
  • Have the pump and reservoir positioned so the pump inlet remains supplied with coolant while you fill the loop.

Do not substitute random screws, washers, pads, or thread adapters. A screw that is too long can contact the PCB, while an incorrect pad thickness can prevent the GPU cold plate from touching the die or can bend the board.

Remove the factory cooler without stressing the PCB

  1. Remove the graphics card from the computer and place it component-side up on the prepared surface. Follow the card maker’s disassembly order rather than assuming every cooler uses the same bracket.
  2. Remove the backplate, heatsink, bracket, fan shroud, or other fasteners identified by the card or block manual. Loosen spring-loaded screws gradually in a crosswise pattern when the instructions specify one.
  3. Separate the cooler gently. Do not twist the PCB, pry against small components, or pull while a cable is still attached.
  4. Disconnect fan, pump, lighting, or sensor headers before lifting the cooler. Corsair’s XG5 instructions specifically call for disconnecting fan headers.
  5. Clean old thermal paste with a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol. Remove residue without scraping the GPU die or surrounding components.
  6. Inspect the exposed PCB for damaged components, lifted pads, contamination, or an unexpected layout. Stop if the board does not match the compatibility information.

Factory coolers differ substantially. A procedure that is safe for one card can tear a thermal pad or damage a connector on another, so do not treat the steps above as a replacement for the exact manual.

Mount the water block according to its model-specific manual

Prepare the block

Place the block on a clean surface and remove protective films only where the instructions tell you to. Confirm that the cold plate, terminal, seals, and supplied hardware are intact. Keep the protective film on any surface that should not yet be exposed to dust or fingerprints.

Install thermal pads and paste

Apply each thermal pad to the component and location shown in the manual. Memory chips and voltage-regulator components may require different thicknesses. Do not stack pads or trim them so that they overlap electrical contacts unless the instructions explicitly show that arrangement.

Apply the specified amount of thermal paste to the GPU die. The goal is complete contact under the block’s mounting pressure, not a thick layer that prevents the cold plate from seating.

Align and fasten the block

  1. Lower the block onto the PCB while keeping the mounting holes aligned. Avoid sliding the cold plate across the die or pads.
  2. Insert only the supplied or explicitly specified screws, washers, and standoffs. Some designs use washers; others rely on board standoffs, so do not add hardware because it appears useful.
  3. Start every screw by a few turns before tightening any one of them fully.
  4. Follow the manual’s tightening order and pressure guidance. EKWB’s cited legacy GTX 1080 manual, for example, starts near the GPU core and works outward; that sequence is not a universal instruction for current blocks.
  5. Tighten evenly and stop when the manual’s instruction is satisfied. Never force a screw or press hard on the PCB or GPU die.

Confirm contact before closing the card

Where the manual calls for a contact check, verify that the cold plate reaches the GPU die and that the pads touch the intended memory and power-delivery components. If a pad appears untouched, a screw bottoms out early, or the block rocks, stop and resolve the problem with the manufacturer rather than guessing a new pad thickness or adding pressure.

Select fittings, ports, and tubing carefully

Use fittings whose thread and sealing method match the block. Choose tubing that matches the fitting size, and use the fitting’s intended locking collar or clamp. Install plugs in every unused port required by the block design.

Port direction is block-specific. Corsair’s XG5 guide warns that routing one port as both inlet and outlet can bypass the block. Other designs may allow either opening to serve as inlet or outlet. Follow the diagram for your exact model.

Corsair specifies hand-tightening for its XG3 and XG5 fittings and warns against tools such as pliers. Over-tightening can damage threads, seals, or the terminal. An EKWB legacy manual cited for a GTX 1080 permits either opening as inlet or outlet and specifies a 5 mm maximum male thread length for that named block; do not apply that limit to another product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Close and inspect the loop

  • Push tubing fully onto each fitting and secure it with the fitting’s designed locking method.
  • Check that every unused port has the correct plug and seal.
  • Make sure no tube is kinked, sharply bent, or pulling sideways on a terminal.
  • Confirm that the fill port is the only intentional opening before circulation begins.
  • Verify that the pump inlet and reservoir contain enough coolant to prevent dry running.

Fill the loop with computer components isolated from power

During filling and the initial leak test, the motherboard, graphics card, storage drives, and other computer components must not receive power. Disconnect their PSU cables. Leave only the PSU connection needed for the pump and use the PSU maker’s or pump/reservoir maker’s instructions for the correct 24-pin ATX jumper.

  1. Switch the PSU off and connect the ATX jumper as directed. Double-check that no motherboard, GPU, drive, or accessory power cable remains connected.
  2. Fill the reservoir with the correct coolant before starting the pump. Do not pour coolant into a reservoir that cannot supply the pump inlet.
  3. Start the PSU and pump briefly. Watch the reservoir continuously.
  4. Switch the pump off before the reservoir empties. Alphacool states that a pump should never run dry because it can be damaged; Corsair’s XD7 instructions likewise warn against allowing the reservoir to run out.
  5. Refill the reservoir and repeat short pump cycles until coolant reaches all sections of the loop.
  6. As air moves into the reservoir, top it up while keeping the pump supplied. Tilting the case slightly can help release trapped air only if the loop is secure and the pump remains flooded.

Keep absorbent material beneath every connection. NVIDIA’s GeForce Garage guidance emphasizes careful fill level and inspection, and a second observer can make it easier to spot a small escaped drop while you operate the pump.

Inspect for leaks before normal startup

With only the pump energized, inspect the GPU block, terminal, plugs, fittings, tubing joints, radiator, reservoir, and drain points. Look for droplets, a growing damp patch, a falling reservoir level that is not explained by trapped air, or coolant appearing outside the intended channels.

Do not power the computer merely because the loop circulates once without an obvious leak. Corsair recommends a thorough 24-hour leak test for its XG3 guidance. Its XD7 instructions advise running the pump for about 24 hours to remove trapped air and ensure there are no leaks, and the XG5 instructions say to leak-test before turning on the PC. These are product-specific recommendations, not a universal industry standard; use the period and method stated by your own manufacturers.

What a safe test setup looks like

  • The PSU switch and jumper are accessible so you can stop circulation immediately.
  • Computer power leads remain disconnected for the entire test.
  • Paper towels or absorbent pads make a slow seep visible without touching powered electronics.
  • The reservoir remains above the pump inlet and is checked repeatedly for level and foam.
  • All fittings remain visible rather than hidden behind a panel or cable bundle.

What to do when you find a leak

  1. Switch off the pump and PSU immediately. Do not continue circulating coolant to “see whether it stops.”
  2. Keep the computer’s power cables disconnected. If coolant has reached hardware, do not attempt a startup to test it.
  3. Identify the source: a loose fitting, misplaced plug seal, incompletely inserted tube, damaged O-ring, cracked terminal, or a port arrangement that does not match the manual.
  4. Drain or isolate the affected section as the loop design permits, then reassemble it with the correct seal, fitting, tube cut, or plug.
  5. Dry the outside of the hardware thoroughly and inspect for residue or damage. The reviewed manufacturer material does not establish one universal recovery procedure for coolant contacting electronics, so consult the affected hardware maker before applying power.
  6. Refill and repeat the complete manufacturer-specified leak test from the beginning.

Never use tape, excessive force, or an improvised seal to hide a leak. Replace damaged seals or fittings with compatible parts.

Reconnect the computer only after the test passes

  1. Stop the pump and switch the PSU off before removing the ATX jumper.
  2. Inspect every connection one more time and confirm that the reservoir has the manufacturer-recommended operating level.
  3. Reconnect the motherboard, graphics-card, drive, and accessory power cables.
  4. Check that the GPU is mechanically supported in the case and that tubing does not press on the card or interfere with fans.
  5. Start the computer and watch the loop, reservoir level, and temperatures during the first boot. Shut down immediately if you see a leak, hear the pump run without coolant, or observe abnormal temperatures.

Choosing a block and planning the test

Before buying hardware, compare the details that determine whether an installation will be safe and serviceable rather than comparing GPU names alone.

Decision point Why it matters
Exact PCB support Different variants in one GPU family can have different holes, memory positions, and power-delivery layouts.
Included backplate and thermal materials The backplate, pad thicknesses, washers, and screws must match the intended card and mounting pressure.
Port layout and plugs Port direction, unused-port plugs, and clearance determine whether the block can be routed without bypassing its cooling channels.
Fitting and thread requirements Thread standard, male-thread length, sealing method, and hand-tightening instructions vary by block.
Installation documentation A complete manual with diagrams and contact checks reduces the risk of guessing at pad placement or screw order.
Warranty terms Removing the factory cooler and user-caused damage may affect coverage; the applicable terms depend on the card, block, and region.

For leak testing, favor a method that keeps computer components unpowered, fits your loop’s fittings, and follows the pump, reservoir, and block makers’ prescribed procedure. The available guidance does not establish one universal pressure tester or pressure target, so do not impose a value from another product.

Final installation checklist

  • The exact card and PCB are listed by the block maker, or compatibility was confirmed directly before disassembly.
  • The current block manual is available at the workbench.
  • Warranty terms were checked and the original cooler and screws were retained.
  • Old paste was removed without damaging the die or PCB.
  • Only specified screws, washers, standoffs, pads, and paste were used.
  • Thermal-pad and cold-plate contact were verified where the manual requires it.
  • Fittings, plugs, tubing, and port direction match the block instructions.
  • The pump never ran dry and the reservoir never emptied during filling.
  • Motherboard, GPU, drive, and accessory power remained disconnected during filling and leak testing.
  • The manufacturer-specified leak-test period was completed with repeated visual inspections.
  • Any leak was corrected, the affected hardware was dried and inspected, and the test was restarted before normal power-up.
