You cannot install or format expandable storage on Meta’s Ray-Ban AI glasses. The current Ray-Ban Meta Blayzer Optics (Gen 2) and Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer (Gen 1) listings specify 32GB of fixed internal flash memory. They do not document a microSD slot, USB storage mount, removable-media support, or a user-replaceable flash module.
When the glasses approach their limit, the supported workflow is to import captures with the Meta AI app, confirm that the copies are safe on your phone or another archive, and then continue using the glasses. A factory reset can delete captures, but it is an ownership-transfer or serious-troubleshooting measure—not a normal formatting tool.

What “expandable storage” means for Meta glasses
People often use “Meta VR glasses” to describe the camera-equipped Ray-Ban Meta glasses. These are not documented as computers with an expansion bay. Their photos and videos are recorded to internal flash memory, then moved to a paired phone through the Meta AI app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOfficial product information for the two models covered here lists 32GB of flash storage in each. Neither listing describes a card reader, removable storage tray, USB mass-storage mode, or an internal upgrade procedure. That means there is no supported installation process comparable to inserting and formatting a microSD card in a phone or camera.

The storage is private to the glasses while captures remain on the device. Meta describes the owner as choosing when to import those captures to a phone. The phone copy is a separate archive; it does not increase the glasses’ own 32GB capacity.
Can you add a microSD card, USB drive, or replacement chip?
No supported method is documented for expanding the glasses’ built-in memory. The following approaches should not be treated as compatible upgrades:
| Proposed method | Supported by the documented specifications? | What it can actually do |
|---|---|---|
| microSD or microSDXC card | No | Nothing in the glasses’ official specifications indicates a card slot or a way for the glasses to mount the card. |
| USB-C flash drive or external SSD | No | An external drive might store files after they have been imported to a phone, but it is not documented as storage that the glasses can record to. |
| USB cable used as a storage connection | No documented storage mode | The documented transfer path is the Meta AI app. A cable should not be assumed to expose the glasses as a disk. |
| Replacement or upgraded internal flash | No user procedure | There is no official module, compatibility list, or formatting process for replacing the built-in memory. |
| Factory reset | Available as a data-erasure action | Deletes captures and account associations; it does not add capacity or create expandable storage. |
Opening the frames or attempting a hardware modification can damage the electronics and may affect service eligibility. More importantly, an unverified modification would not provide a documented way to initialize the storage or make the glasses recognize new media.
How the glasses’ storage workflow works
Captures stay on the glasses until you import them
Photos and videos are initially held in the glasses’ internal flash. They remain private on the device until you choose to import them. This design lets you decide which files reach the phone instead of automatically sending every capture.
The app coordinates Bluetooth and a temporary Wi-Fi link
Pairing and normal device management use Bluetooth. Ray-Ban’s support information also says that importing captures and installing firmware updates use a temporary Wi-Fi connection directly between the Meta AI app and the glasses. This direct connection is separate from buying or installing a Wi-Fi storage accessory.

The phone becomes the practical archive
Imported media can be saved to the phone’s camera roll or gallery. From there, you can copy it to a computer, a separately supported external drive, or another backup service. Those destinations preserve your files, but none of them expands the flash memory inside the glasses.
Import captures before the glasses run out of space
Use this procedure whenever you see a low-storage warning or before a long outing in which you expect to record many clips. The exact wording and location of controls can change between Meta AI app versions, but the documented operation is the app’s download or import control.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open the Meta AI app. Confirm that the glasses appear as a paired device rather than an unconfigured accessory.
- Turn on Bluetooth. Keep the phone and glasses close together while the app establishes the connection.
- Open the glasses’ captures or media area. Select the app’s download/import control. If the app asks to establish a direct connection, allow the temporary Wi-Fi link used for the transfer.
- Wait for the transfer to finish. Avoid closing the app or moving the glasses out of range while files are being copied. Large groups of videos can take longer than a few photos.
- Check the destination on the phone. Open the camera roll or gallery and verify that important photos and videos play correctly. A thumbnail in the app is not a substitute for checking the saved file.
- Create a second copy for irreplaceable material. Move verified files to a computer or another archive that the phone supports. Keep the original phone copy until the second copy has been checked.
- Only then consider deleting or resetting anything. Importing is the capacity-management step; resetting is an irreversible data-erasure step.
If you are importing a large batch, work in smaller groups and verify each group. This makes it easier to identify a failed transfer and reduces the risk of assuming that every selected item arrived in the gallery.
What to do when storage is full
1. Import and verify
Start with the Meta AI app’s import function. Leave the glasses paired, Bluetooth enabled, and nearby while the app transfers the captures. Then inspect the phone’s camera roll or gallery and open representative photos and videos.
2. Archive the files
For long-term retention, copy the verified media to a computer or another archive device that your phone supports. Organize the files by date or event before removing anything from the phone. An archive is a destination for imported files, not an extension of the glasses’ recording space.

- View, access, and back up your phone’s files in one location with the SanDisk Memory Zone app

3. Remove only confirmed copies
Do not delete captures from the phone merely because the app reports that an import completed. Confirm that the files exist in the gallery and, for important material, in your second archive. The glasses should be treated as the original source until those checks are complete.
4. Reset only for a specific reason
If the glasses are changing owners or a serious software problem requires a clean start, follow the factory-reset instructions presented by the Meta AI app or the current Ray-Ban support documentation. A reset is not a routine “format” command. Ray-Ban states that factory reset removes personal data and deletes captures, permanently erasing all captures and the associations between the glasses and your Meta Account.
Factory reset versus formatting
Formatting normally prepares removable media for reuse while leaving the device’s operating system and hardware intact. The documented factory reset has a different purpose: it clears user data and account relationships from the glasses. It does not expose a file-system selector, increase the 32GB capacity, or let you choose a new storage format.
Use a reset only after importing and verifying every capture you need. It is appropriate when:
- you are transferring the glasses to another person;
- support instructions specifically require a clean reset while diagnosing a major software problem; or
- you have deliberately decided that all captures and personal associations can be erased.
It is not appropriate merely because the storage indicator is high. Importing captures is the documented way to make room while preserving your media.

How much can 32GB hold?
Meta’s 2026 product listings give approximate capture estimates, and the estimates differ between models even though both list 32GB of flash storage. They should be read as manufacturer guidance, not a guaranteed number of files. Resolution, video length, metadata, software-reserved space, and other factors can change the actual result.
| Model listing | Internal storage | Advertised photo estimate | Advertised video estimate | How to interpret the figures |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ray-Ban Meta Blayzer Optics (Gen 2) | 32GB flash | 1,000+ photos | 100+ videos of 30 seconds | Approximate manufacturer estimates from the 2026 listing, not a guaranteed free-space limit. |
| Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer (Gen 1) | 32GB flash | 500+ photos | 100+ videos of 30 seconds | Approximate manufacturer estimates from the 2026 listing; the lower photo figure is model-specific despite the same stated capacity. |
The two photo estimates are not interchangeable. If you own the Gen 1 Wayfarer, use its listing as the relevant planning reference rather than assuming that the Gen 2 estimate applies. Neither estimate means that every owner will reach exactly that count before a warning appears.
Troubleshooting an import that does not complete
The glasses do not appear in the app
- Open the Meta AI app and check whether the glasses are shown as paired.
- Turn Bluetooth on and keep the phone close to the glasses.
- If the app offers a reconnect or pairing action, complete that action before attempting another import.
Do not buy a storage accessory to solve a pairing problem. The documented storage path begins with the app recognizing the glasses.
The import starts but stalls
- Keep the glasses and phone near each other and leave the app open while the transfer runs.
- Allow the temporary direct Wi-Fi connection requested by the app; it is part of the documented import workflow.
- Retry with a smaller selection if a large batch does not finish, then check the gallery for duplicates before repeating the entire batch.
Files appear to be missing
- Check the phone’s camera roll or gallery rather than relying only on the app’s preview.
- Look for the date on which the import occurred and verify that both photos and videos are present.
- Do not reset the glasses while the location of an important capture is uncertain. Reset permanently erases the captures that remain on the glasses.
The phone is also running out of space
Free space on the phone or move verified imports to a separate archive. Phone storage and glasses storage are different limits: clearing room on the phone does not automatically clear the glasses, and buying a larger phone does not make the glasses’ internal flash larger. Manage each copy deliberately.
What an archive can and cannot do
A computer, external SSD, USB flash drive, or other supported archive can hold imported photos and videos after they reach the phone. That is useful for backup and for freeing phone space. It cannot be selected as the recording target for the glasses on the basis of the documented specifications.

For a reliable archive, keep the original import until the copied files have been opened from the archive. Use clear folders and retain dates so that a later cleanup does not remove the only verified copy. These practices protect the media without implying that the archive is connected storage for the glasses.
Buying advice: avoid an incompatible “storage upgrade”
There is no honest compatible-storage purchase to install in these glasses. A listing for a microSD card, USB-C drive, external SSD, or replacement flash chip may be useful for another device or for phone-based archiving, but it is not evidence that the glasses can record to it. The official specifications do not document the slot, connector mode, firmware support, or formatting procedure required for such an upgrade.
If your goal is more recording time, the supported choice is operational rather than hardware-based: import captures regularly, maintain a verified archive, and start each outing with enough free internal space for the photos and clips you expect to make.
A practical storage routine
- Before recording: make sure the glasses are paired in the Meta AI app and Bluetooth is enabled.
- After a recording session: open the app’s capture area and import the new media while the glasses are nearby.
- After importing: verify files in the phone gallery, then copy important material to a second archive.
- Before deleting: compare the number and playback of the important files in the gallery and archive.
- Before ownership transfer: complete the backup, then perform the factory reset described by the current support instructions.
This routine separates three actions that are often confused: importing copies files off the glasses, archiving protects those copies, and factory reset erases the glasses. None of them installs expandable storage or reformats a removable card.
Quick Recap
The bottom line for each common question
- “Can I add an SD card?” No documented slot or supported procedure exists.
- “Can I format the glasses?” There is no documented removable-media format utility. A factory reset only erases user data and captures.
- “Can I use a USB-C drive?” Not as documented recording storage. Use a separately supported drive only after importing files to the phone.
- “What should I do when storage is full?” Import captures with the Meta AI app, verify them in the phone gallery and an archive, then continue using the glasses.
