What HelixSR does—and what it does not do
HelixSR is a Linux/Proton mod that supplies a super-resolution upscaling path. It reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render, potentially allowing a game to render fewer pixels while targeting the same display resolution. It is not a complete performance package: HelixSR does not provide its own frame-generation system. The project is free downloadable software; the documented process does not require a new console, storage card, dock, special tool, or consumable. Your practical costs are the download and the time needed to test and roll back a game. The project supports Direct3D 12 games running through Proton. Vulkan games are outside its supported scope. Before you install
Use Desktop Mode and a persistent folder
Download the current release archive from the official HelixSR GitHub releases page while in Steam Deck Desktop Mode. The checked README identifies version 1.8.1 and the archive name HelixSR-1.8.1.zip. Extract it into a folder in your home area that you intend to keep, rather than a temporary Downloads location you may later clean out. The setup and uninstall scripts remain in that extracted folder.
Close every target game
Exit the game before installing, updating, switching routes, or uninstalling. A running process can hold a DLL open and prevent the setup from replacing or restoring files correctly. Also close a separate launcher if the game uses one, and wait for Steam to finish any update or file-verification task before modifying the installation.

- It must render through Direct3D 12 under Proton.
- Your hardware must fit the project’s claimed AMD RDNA 1-or-newer range; Vega is explicitly excluded.
- Check which upscaling technology the game exposes. A game with an FSR 3.1 path can use the direct replacement route. A game with a DLSS, XeSS, or FSR path may be offered an OptiScaler route, depending on the files the setup detects.
- Do not plan to use the experimental loader in an online or anti-cheat-protected game.
A title can meet the API and GPU conditions and still fail because of a game-specific integration, an update, or an unsupported rendering path. Treat the methods shown by setup as opportunities to test, not as compatibility guarantees. Test one game at a time so you can identify which installation produced a change.
Understand the SteamOS dependency choices
On first run, the Linux setup may use existing system dependencies, offer to install missing ones, or download a portable Python environment into ~/.local/share/HelixSR. The portable option is intended to work on read-only systems such as SteamOS. The Linux route requires Python 3 with NumPy. The shader compiler runs through Proton. Downloads are pinned to exact versions and checked with SHA-256 according to the README.
Allow enough free storage for the archive, generated files, downloaded DLL, and optional portable environment. Do not move or rename the HelixSR folder between installing and uninstalling unless you are prepared to locate the scripts and backups again. Keeping one stable folder makes updates and rollback less error-prone.
Install HelixSR step by step
- Extract the release. Unpack
HelixSR-1.8.1.zip(or the newer archive shown on the release page) into your persistent home-folder location. - Open a terminal in that folder. In Desktop Mode, launch Konsole, change to the extracted directory, and make sure the setup script is present. The command below assumes you are already in that directory:
./helixsr-setup.sh
You can also double-click the script in the file manager and choose Run in terminal. - Allow the first-run download. The setup asks whether to download NVIDIA’s DLSS DLL. Accepting this is part of the normal initialization. HelixSR then builds its upscaling network locally.
- Resolve Linux dependencies. If Python 3 or NumPy is missing, follow the setup’s choice to use system packages, install them, or fetch the portable Python environment under
~/.local/share/HelixSR. On SteamOS, the portable option avoids relying on a writable system image. - Let shader compilation complete. The shader compiler operates through Proton. Do not launch the target game until setup has finished and returned to its menu or prompt.
- Choose a method for each detected game. The installer displays the methods that apply to each title. Keep the game closed while making this choice, then record which route you selected because it determines the in-game upscaler setting.
If the installer cannot find a game, it can accept a folder path at the end of the process or a path argument when launched. Use the generated manual-install instructions for that title rather than copying files from another game’s installation. The relevant directory is the game’s own folder containing its executable and rendering files, not a generic folder that contains several games.

Choose the correct per-game route
The route is the most important configuration decision. Selecting the wrong upscaler in the game can leave HelixSR unused or produce a broken image. Compare the game’s actual API and menu options with the methods displayed by setup; do not select a route solely because its name sounds newer.

Direct FSR 3.1 replacement
Choose f when setup offers the FSR 3.1 replacement route. In the game’s graphics settings, choose AMD FSR. There is no HelixSR-specific menu in this route: HelixSR runs behind the replaced FSR path until you uninstall it or switch routes. If you select DLSS instead, you are not selecting the path that was installed.
OptiScaler route
Choose o when that method is offered and you need the game’s DLSS-facing path or another OptiScaler-supported route. In the game, select DLSS. OptiScaler then exposes its own controls while directing the FSR 3.1 backend to HelixSR.
To change OptiScaler settings in-game, press Insert, open Upscaling, choose Upscalers, and open the FFX Upscaler list. Select FSR HelixSR (3.1.5) or another HelixSR entry shown there. The exact list depends on what the setup detected and installed for that game. If the menu does not open, verify that the OptiScaler route was actually installed and that the game is using the expected upscaler.

When several routes are offered
Compare the game’s actual APIs and menu options before choosing. Prefer the ordinary FSR replacement when the game has a clear FSR 3.1 path and you want the fewest moving parts. Use OptiScaler when the game exposes DLSS, XeSS, or FSR 2 and setup specifically offers an OptiScaler method. Route maturity is game-dependent; an offered method is not evidence that every feature of that title has been tested. If you switch routes later, use setup’s update or switch function instead of layering files by hand.
Manual installation for a game that is not detected
Steam games are normally discovered automatically. For a non-Steam installation, or a Steam title the scanner misses, let setup request the game’s directory at the end of the run or provide the path argument supported by the script. Then follow the generated manual-install instructions. Point to the folder containing the game’s executable and its relevant rendering files, not merely a parent folder with unrelated games.
After manual installation, launch the game once with the intended upscaler selected. If the title shows no HelixSR or OptiScaler behavior, close it and check the generated log beside the game files before changing several settings at once. Record the Proton version and route as you test, because those details help distinguish a setup problem from a game-specific incompatibility.

What performance evidence exists
The project’s README reports GPU-time measurements for the upscaling pass on an AMD BC-250 clocked at 2000 MHz. These are not whole-game frame times, not Steam Deck measurements, and not a prediction of your frame rate. The page is live and gives no publication year; the figures below are identified as “HelixSR project README, version 1.8.1 (2026; page checked 2026-10-11).”

Because the test system is different from a Steam Deck and the numbers cover only the upscaling pass, use them to understand the workload HelixSR reports, not to estimate a game’s final frames per second. No Steam Deck performance measurements are published in the checked README. A Deck’s result will also depend on the game’s CPU load, shader compilation, Proton version, display resolution, quality preset, thermal state, and whether frame generation is enabled separately.
Do not use the experimental DLSS loader casually
The setup may show a d DLSS-loader option. The README describes it as new and tested in very few games on Linux/Proton, not on Windows. It can crash or stop working after a game update. Most importantly, the loader changes what the game sees, so anti-cheat software could treat it as tampering.

Update or change a route

Do not layer a second route over the first manually; let the setup restore and replace the files it manages. If a game update has removed modified files, running setup again is preferable to copying an old DLL back into the directory.
Uninstall one installation
- Close the game and its launcher.
- From the HelixSR folder, run:
./helixsr-uninstall.sh - Choose whether to delete generated files and downloads when the script asks.
- Launch the game without HelixSR to confirm that its original route is back.
The README says the uninstall script restores replaced files. For OptiScaler installations, backups are kept in HelixSR/backup; direct replacements use files named *.original.dll. Do not delete those backups before uninstalling if you may need to recover the original game files. If you installed more than one title, follow the script’s prompts carefully so you remove the intended installation rather than every generated download.

Red border, very low resolution, or a shaking image
The README attributes these symptoms to the network not running. Close the game, inspect helixsr.log near the game’s files, and rerun setup so it can download NVIDIA’s DLL. Then launch again with the correct in-game upscaler for the route you installed. A direct replacement should be tested with AMD FSR; an OptiScaler installation should be tested with DLSS before you alter other graphics settings.
DLSS does not appear in the game
Do not assume the OptiScaler route succeeded merely because files were copied. If DLSS is unavailable, use FSR or XeSS when the game provides one; OptiScaler may route those choices where supported. The game crashes after an update
A game update can replace files HelixSR modified or change the rendering interface the route expects. Rerun setup and choose its update or switch function. If the title still fails, run ./helixsr-uninstall.sh, restore the original game, and test the unmodified version before deciding whether to reinstall. This also tells you whether the update itself is broken independently of the mod.
The game is not detected
Use the folder prompt or supported path argument and read the generated manual-install instructions. Confirm that you selected the actual game directory and that the title is installed locally rather than being streamed. Automatic detection applies to Steam games; other launchers require the manual path.
SteamOS itself is unstable
Valve’s general Steam Deck troubleshooting guidance applies to both LCD and OLED models: install available system updates and restart the device. This is platform maintenance, not a HelixSR-specific fix, but it removes common software-state problems before further mod troubleshooting.
Practical decision checklist
- API: Is the game Direct3D 12 under Proton rather than Vulkan?
- Hardware: Is the GPU in the claimed AMD RDNA 1-or-newer range, and not Vega?
- Route: Did setup offer direct FSR replacement, OptiScaler, or neither?
- Menu choice: Direct replacement means AMD FSR; OptiScaler means DLSS, with the Insert menu available for its FFX Upscaler list.
- Safety: Is the game offline, or have you avoided the experimental loader in an anti-cheat or online title?
- Rollback: Are the HelixSR folder and backup files still present before you test?
