FFTARecomp v2.0 converts the USA release of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance into a native Windows, Linux or Steam Deck program. You supply a legally obtained USA ROM, run the platform installer, and let the project recompile the game locally. The port does not distribute ROM data, and a console BIOS is not required.
On Windows, installation consists of extracting FFTARecomp-windows-x86_64.zip, launching FFTARecomp.exe, selecting your ROM and choosing Recompile & Install. Linux and Steam Deck users extract FFTARecomp-linux-x86_64.tar.gz and run FFTAInstaller; Steam Deck installation is performed in Desktop Mode.

What FFTARecomp 2.0 actually is
FFTARecomp is an unofficial native recompilation of the USA version of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Instead of running the original game inside a conventional emulator, it rebuilds the game into a native executable for your computer. The project describes support for Windows, Linux and Steam Deck.
The distinction matters during setup. You are not downloading a complete commercial game from the project. You provide your own game image, and the installer uses that image as input for the local build. The project does not include copyrighted game data or ROMs. It also includes a clean-room emibios replacement, so a dumped console BIOS is not required.

What you need before installing
Your own USA ROM
You need a legally obtained USA copy of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. The port is built around that regional release; a different region or revision may not be recognized or may produce an incompatible build. Do not treat the installer or the project as a source for obtaining the game.
A related recompilation repository identifies the supported USA AFXE revision with SHA-1 4ac05441f4de70a4ec3dd932116346c61b8783d9 and a file size of 16,777,216 bytes. Those values are a compatibility check, not a download instruction. If you already have a dump, checking its hash can explain why the installer rejects it.

Use a current Windows or Linux installation, or a Steam Deck. The project documentation does not publish a minimum CPU, GPU, memory or storage specification, and no independent performance benchmark is established. The first build temporarily uses more CPU and RAM than simply playing the finished game, so leave enough free system resources for a local compilation.
Keyboard controls work without extra hardware. A USB or wireless XInput-compatible gamepad is the clearest physical-controller option because generic XInput support is documented in v2.0.
What you do not need
- You do not need a Nintendo console BIOS dump.
- You do not need a traditional emulator.
- You do not need to find a separate game download from the project.
Check your ROM before you start
Compatibility checking is optional but useful when you have several dumps or an installer error. The expected file is 16,777,216 bytes and has SHA-1 4ac05441f4de70a4ec3dd932116346c61b8783d9 according to the related repository’s documentation. A mismatch does not prove that your copy is illegitimate; it means the file is not the documented USA AFXE revision and may not be accepted by this port.
Keep the original ROM unchanged. Make a working copy if you need to rename or move it, and avoid applying patches or compression before selecting it in the installer. The recompiler expects the game image as its input, not a save file or an emulator state.

Install FFTARecomp 2.0 on Windows
1. Download and extract the release
- Obtain
FFTARecomp-windows-x86_64.zipfrom the project’s Releases page. - Extract the entire archive to a folder you control. Do not run the executable directly from inside the compressed archive.
- Keep the extracted files together; the installer includes more than the final game executable.
2. Start the installer
- Run
FFTARecomp.exe. - When prompted, browse to your own USA ROM and select it.
- Choose Recompile & Install.
3. Wait for the local build
- Allow all five installation steps to complete. The first installation builds the game on your PC and can take several minutes.
- When the installer reports completion, press Play.
During this first build, temporary increases in CPU and RAM use are expected. The extracted installation can occupy more space than the game itself because it contains a compiler toolchain used to produce the native program. Do not assume that a busy processor means the installer has frozen unless the process has stopped responding for an extended period and disk or CPU activity has also ceased.
Windows security warnings
The executables are not code-signed. Windows SmartScreen or antivirus software may therefore display a warning even when the files came from the project’s release archive. The project’s README suggests using More info → Run anyway or unblocking the archive through its file properties. Apply your own security judgment: verify that you downloaded the intended release, scan the files with your security software, and do not bypass a warning for an unrelated or altered file.
Install on Linux
Linux users receive a tarball installer rather than the Windows executable. Open a terminal in the directory containing FFTARecomp-linux-x86_64.tar.gz and run:

./FFTAInstallerThe first command creates a destination directory. The second extracts the archive there, the third enters that directory, and the fourth starts the installer. Follow its prompts to select your legally obtained USA ROM and begin recompilation. If the shell reports that the installer is not executable, confirm that you extracted the archive correctly and that you are running the command from the directory containing FFTAInstaller; the documented procedure does not require a BIOS dump.

Install on Steam Deck
Use Desktop Mode for the installation
- Switch the Deck to Desktop Mode.
- Download
FFTARecomp-linux-x86_64.tar.gz. - Open Konsole or another terminal and run the four extraction and launch commands shown in the Linux section.
- When the installer asks for a ROM, select your own USA image.
- Wait for the local compilation to finish before trying to launch the game.
The project specifically directs Steam Deck users to run the installer from Desktop Mode. The documentation does not provide a separate Steam Gaming Mode installation path, so complete the build in Desktop Mode first and then add or launch the resulting program according to your normal Deck workflow.
First launch: open the Options Menu
Press Esc while the game is running to open the Options Menu. This is where you change controls, display behavior, audio and fast-forward settings. Settings are more useful to configure before a long play session, especially if you are moving between keyboard and controller input.

You can remap every relevant action from the Options Menu. If a key conflicts with another application or your keyboard layout, change it there rather than editing configuration files manually.

Generic XInput controller mapping
Version 2.0 supports generic XInput gamepads. Its documented defaults are:

Button labels can differ between controller manufacturers, but the mapping is based on the XInput positions rather than a single branded gamepad. If a controller is connected but does not respond, use Options → Input and remap a button as described in the troubleshooting section.
Configure video, widescreen and zoom
Choose an aspect-ratio preset
The video options provide an automatic mode plus fixed presets for 16:10, 16:9, 20:9, 21:9 and 32:9 displays. Select the preset that matches your monitor or handheld screen when automatic detection does not produce the framing you want. The 32:9 option is the documented maximum widescreen preset.
Very wide displays were a specific focus of v2.0. If a super-ultrawide image appears stretched or leaves unexpected borders, open the video settings and select the matching 21:9 or 32:9 mode instead of relying on an older configuration carried over from another build.
Screen model, grid, scaling and synchronization
The same video area exposes controls for screen model, grid, scaling and vertical synchronization (vsync). Screen model and grid affect the presentation of the original handheld image; scaling changes how that image is enlarged; vsync controls synchronization between rendered frames and the display refresh. Try one change at a time so you can identify which setting caused a visual artifact or altered input feel.

Zoom in and out are available from the keyboard with + and -, and are assigned to controller bumpers in the documented XInput defaults. Zoom is independent of the widescreen preset: choose the aspect ratio for the display shape, then adjust zoom for the amount of game area and interface size that feels comfortable.
Configure audio and fast-forward
Audio volume is adjustable in the Options Menu. Fast-forward behavior has three documented modes:

The release announcement documents fast-forward of up to 8x. That is a project capability claim, not an independent performance benchmark, and the practical result can depend on the scene and your hardware.
What to expect during the first installation
The installer is compiling a native game for your machine, not merely copying a prebuilt executable. That is why the first run can take several minutes and why CPU and RAM use can rise temporarily. The extracted package is also larger than the finished game because it contains the compiler toolchain.

- Keep the computer connected to power, particularly on a Steam Deck or laptop.
- Close unnecessary applications if memory pressure makes the desktop unresponsive.
- Do not terminate the installer solely because the processor is busy.
- If the process exits with an error, record the step at which it stopped and the exact message before trying again.
Once the build succeeds, later launches do not repeat the entire initial compilation unless you remove the installation or start over with a new build.

The installer rejects my ROM
- Confirm that the file is the USA version, not another regional release.
- Check the 16,777,216-byte size and SHA-1
4ac05441f4de70a4ec3dd932116346c61b8783d9against the documented AFXE revision. - Use an unmodified ROM rather than a patched, trimmed or compressed file.
- Make sure you selected the ROM itself, not a save state or a folder containing it.
The project cannot supply a replacement ROM. If your file does not match, obtain a lawful dump from your own copy and check it again.
Windows blocks the executable
Because the executables are unsigned, SmartScreen or antivirus software can intervene. Confirm that the archive is the release you intended to download, inspect the included VirusTotal report referenced by the README, and use More info → Run anyway only if you are satisfied with the file’s provenance. You can also open the archive’s Properties dialog and use the Windows unblock option before extracting it.
The first build appears frozen
Look for continuing CPU, memory or disk activity. The initial compilation is expected to take several minutes and to use more resources than normal play. If there is no activity and the installer has stopped responding, close it, restart the installer and note any error text. Freeing disk space and closing other memory-heavy applications can also help, but the documentation does not specify a minimum amount of free space.

My gamepad is not detected on first launch
The README records a first-launch issue in which a gamepad may not be detected immediately. Open Options → Input and try remapping one button. The documented behavior is that the controller then activates on its own. If it still does not respond, reconnect the XInput device, verify that the operating system sees it, and repeat the remapping step.

Silhouettes appear in the first level
Sprite silhouettes can appear for one to three seconds in the first level and then stop occurring. This is a known issue documented by the project. If the effect persists beyond that initial behavior or appears throughout the game, capture the scene, display settings and build information before reporting it to the project.
The picture looks wrong on an ultrawide display
Open the video options and select the appropriate 20:9, 21:9 or 32:9 preset rather than leaving an incompatible fixed ratio selected. Then review scaling and screen-model settings. The v2.0 release specifically includes fixes for very wide aspect ratios, so using the matching preset is the first corrective step.
Building from source
Most players should use the published Windows or Linux release archives. A source build is intended for contributors and users who need to compile the project themselves. The official repository lists Rust and Windows PowerShell as requirements, and its build-all.ps1 script builds the workspace and installer. When the required toolchain is absent, the script downloads w64devkit 2.10.0.

If your goal is simply to play, the release archive avoids those setup tasks. If you are debugging or developing, keep the source tree and generated installer separate from your normal game installation so a failed test build does not overwrite a working copy.
Native recompilation versus an emulator
Both approaches can use a ROM you legally own, but they are different technologies. FFTARecomp translates the supported USA game into a native program and provides project-specific widescreen, zoom, fast-forward and XInput controls. An emulator recreates the original console hardware and generally offers broader game compatibility, but its display and input features depend on the emulator you choose.

The project documentation does not provide an independent speed comparison, compatibility survey or hardware benchmark against emulators. Choose the recompilation when its supported platform and built-in presentation controls match your needs; choose an emulator when you need a different console workflow or broader compatibility.
Recommended setup sequence
For the least confusing first session, follow this order:
- Verify that your game image is the USA release and, if possible, check its documented size and SHA-1.
- Download the release archive for your operating system.
- Extract the archive completely.
- Run the Windows executable or Linux installer; on Steam Deck, do this in Desktop Mode.
- Select the ROM and choose Recompile & Install.
- Wait for all five installation steps and the first local build to finish.
- Launch the game and press

- Test keyboard input or connect an XInput controller and remap a button if it is not detected.
- Choose Silent, Fast audio or Normal fast-forward behavior and adjust volume.
Licensing and responsible use
FFTARecomp is an unofficial fan project, not an official release of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. The project’s distribution model separates the recompilation tools from the commercial game data: you must provide your own legally obtained USA ROM, and the project does not include that data. Keep your ROM and any generated files for personal use consistent with the laws that apply where you live.
Because no official publisher support, minimum hardware specification or independent benchmark is documented here, treat compatibility as project-specific rather than guaranteed for every computer. The documented procedure, controls and known issues are sufficient to install and configure the supported build, but unusual hardware or an unrecognized ROM may require checking the project’s current release notes.
