A game’s database status is guidance rather than a guarantee: results depend on the title, RPCS3 build, operating system, drivers, hardware and configuration.
This order matters. RPCS3 and PS3 firmware are separate components, and a game cannot be evaluated properly until the firmware and game files are installed. Use only the project’s official download and documentation pages and game dumps you are legally entitled to use.

What you need before installing RPCS3
Start by checking the current requirements on RPCS3’s live download page. Requirements and packages change, so treat the following list as a snapshot of the platforms identified for this setup rather than a permanent specification.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Platform | Requirement shown by the download information | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10 or later, 64-bit | The Windows package requires the Microsoft Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable. |
| Linux | Ubuntu 22.04 or later with Kernel 6.6 or later | Use the package and installation instructions for your distribution on the current download page. |
| macOS | macOS Sonoma 14.4 or later | Confirm that the current build still supports your Mac and follow the macOS package instructions. |
The download page also publishes platform packages and instructs users to verify SHA checksums. A checksum check helps detect an incomplete or altered download; it does not make an unofficial download source trustworthy. Download the package from the RPCS3 project page, then compare its published checksum using the operating system’s checksum tool or the method documented on that page.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Prepare the legal software you will install
- RPCS3 itself, downloaded from the project’s official download page.
- The official PS3 system firmware file named
PS3UPDAT.PUP, obtained from Sony or from your own console. - A legally owned game dump. RPCS3’s setup documentation discusses folder and ISO formats for owned discs; digital titles and other formats can have additional requirements.
- A controller only if you do not want to play with the input method already available on your PC.
Do not download firmware or copyrighted game files from random file-hosting sites. The emulator setup does not grant permission to use games you do not own or otherwise have the right to access.
How do I install RPCS3?
1. Open the official download page
Choose the package for your operating system. The page may offer more than one build or package format; select the one matching your OS and CPU architecture. Check the page’s current requirements before downloading because the labels and supported versions are maintained over time.
2. Install any platform prerequisite
On Windows, install the Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable required by RPCS3 before launching the emulator. If it is already installed, the installer may report that no action is needed. On Linux and macOS, use the project’s instructions for the package you selected rather than applying Windows-specific steps.
3. Install or launch the downloaded package
Follow the installation instructions supplied for that package. On first launch, allow RPCS3 to create its normal user-data folders when the operating system asks. Keep the emulator in a location where your user account can read and write its configuration and game data; a protected system directory can cause avoidable permission errors.
4. Confirm the build you installed
Record the version shown in RPCS3’s About or equivalent information screen. The download evidence identified build v0.0.40-19389, but that is a version label from a particular point in time, not a current guarantee. Compatibility reports can change between builds, so include your build number when asking for help.

Do I need PS3 firmware?
Yes. RPCS3 requires official PlayStation 3 system firmware in addition to the emulator program. Download or extract the file named PS3UPDAT.PUP from Sony or your own PS3, and avoid unofficial firmware packages.
Install the firmware in RPCS3
- Start RPCS3.
- Open File → Install Firmware.
- Select
PS3UPDAT.PUPin the file picker. - Wait for the installation process to finish before adding or launching a game.
Firmware installation is an emulator operation; placing PS3UPDAT.PUP beside the executable or in a random game folder is not a substitute for using File → Install Firmware.
If firmware installation fails
- Check that the filename is exactly
PS3UPDAT.PUPand that you selected the actual file rather than a containing folder. - Download or extract it again from an official source if the file is incomplete.
- Confirm that RPCS3 has permission to write its data directory.
- Restart RPCS3 after a failed installation and repeat File → Install Firmware.
If the menu cannot see the file, first verify the file extension. Some operating systems hide extensions, which can leave a file with an accidental name such as PS3UPDAT.PUP.zip.
How do I add my PS3 games?
Add game files through RPCS3’s game-management workflow, using only dumps you are entitled to use. The project guide identifies both folder and ISO formats for owned discs. The exact dumping process differs between disc-based games, digital purchases and different media, so use current RPCS3 documentation for the format you have rather than assuming that every PS3 file can be imported the same way.
Add a game folder or ISO
- Finish firmware installation first.
- Open File → Add Games.
- Browse to the folder that contains your legally created game dump, or select the location expected by the file picker for your ISO.
- Confirm the selection and let RPCS3 scan the location.
- Wait for the title to appear in the game list before trying to launch it.
Keep each game’s files together and do not rename internal files unless the project’s documentation specifically instructs you to. If the title does not appear, use File → Add Games again and select the directory one level above the game’s expected structure. A dump that is missing files, encrypted incorrectly or in an unsupported layout may not be recognized even when the folder name looks right.

Legal and format boundaries
RPCS3’s documentation describes how to add owned dumps, but the available evidence does not provide complete dumping instructions for every disc, digital title or format. That omission is important: do not treat a random archive found online as a valid game dump, and do not assume that an ISO from an unknown source is legal or complete. If your format is not recognized, consult the current project guide for that specific format.

How do I choose a graphics renderer?
Open Configuration → GPU. The setup guide recommends selecting Vulkan, and it states that the graphics driver should support Vulkan 1.2. The renderer choices shown in your installation depend on the operating system, GPU and installed driver, so select only an option that actually appears in the menu.
Renderer decision table
| Situation | Action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Vulkan is listed and your driver supports Vulkan 1.2 | Start with Vulkan. | This is the renderer recommended by the setup guide. |
| Vulkan is missing | Update or repair the graphics driver, then recheck the menu. If it remains unavailable, choose another renderer exposed by your build. | RPCS3 cannot use a renderer that the driver does not provide. |
| More than one renderer is listed | Use the option supported by your GPU and the game’s compatibility guidance. | No single renderer is established as best for every PC or every title. |
| A title has renderer-specific guidance | Follow the title’s entry and test that configuration before changing unrelated settings. | Compatibility is game-specific. |
Do not copy a graphics tweak from one game and assume it will fix another. Driver support, GPU architecture, operating system and the game’s own behavior all affect the result. Begin with the supported renderer and change one setting at a time so you can identify what helped or caused a new problem.
Will my game work?
Check the exact game in RPCS3’s live compatibility database before spending time on detailed tuning. Search by the title and, where relevant, distinguish regional releases, editions and updates. The database status describes observed behavior for a particular build and test environment; it is not a performance guarantee for your PC.
What “Playable” means
The compatibility page defines the status this way: “Playable (69.85%): Games that can be completed with playable performance and no game breaking glitches.” The percentage is a changing snapshot from the page at the time it was displayed, not a current statistic. Check the live page for the present value instead of repeating 69.85% as if it were fixed.

“Playable” also does not mean that every computer will deliver the same frame rate, load time or image quality. Read the individual entry’s notes, including known issues, required patches and recommended settings. A title with a lower status may boot but fail later, while a title marked playable can still need the correct firmware, driver, controller feature or per-game configuration.
Use the entry before changing settings
- Find the exact title and release in the compatibility list.
- Read the status and all current notes.
- Identify any required update, patch, renderer or input feature.
- Launch with the basic configuration first.
- Apply only the changes relevant to that entry, testing after each change.
Compatibility entries change as RPCS3 builds and game reports change. Recheck the entry after updating RPCS3 or your graphics driver, especially if a previously working title starts behaving differently.
How do I configure a controller?
RPCS3’s controller guide describes multiple setup approaches. The right choice depends on your operating system, the input handler available in your build, the connection method and the game’s required features.
| Choice to compare | Questions to answer | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OS and handler support | Does the controller work with your operating system and an RPCS3 input handler exposed by the installation? | A controller that works in another PC game may still need a different handler or mapping in RPCS3. |
| Motion controls | Does the game require tilt, motion or another sensor input? | Some setup approaches do not support motion controls. |
| Pressure-sensitive buttons | Does the game distinguish how hard a button is pressed? | Some approaches do not provide pressure-sensitive input. |
| Wired connection | Can you use USB directly? | Usually simpler to diagnose and configure, but it keeps the player tethered to the PC. |
| Wireless connection | Does the operating system and selected handler support the controller wirelessly? | More flexible placement can mean additional pairing, driver or handler setup. |
Configure input in a practical order
- Connect the controller by USB or pair it wirelessly according to the controller and operating-system instructions.
- Open RPCS3’s controller configuration screen.
- Select an input handler that is available in your installation and appropriate for the controller.
- Map the buttons and sticks, then test every control used by the game.
- Check the game’s compatibility notes for motion or pressure-sensitive requirements.
- Save the profile and launch the title.
If basic buttons work but motion or pressure-sensitive actions do not, the limitation may belong to the selected approach rather than to your button mapping. Choose hardware and a handler based on the game’s required features; the controller guide does not establish one universally best controller.

- Confirm the title appears in the RPCS3 game list.
- Reopen its compatibility entry and compare your build and release with the notes.
- Use the renderer selected in Configuration → GPU.
- Start with the controller profile you tested.
- Play far enough to reach the point described in the compatibility notes, not just the opening screen.
- If you change a setting, record what changed and test the same section again.
This approach avoids the common mistake of applying a long list of unexplained “performance” settings before confirming that the game files and firmware are valid.
Troubleshooting by symptom
RPCS3 starts, but the game is absent
- Run File → Add Games again and select the correct parent folder.
- Check that the dump is in a folder or ISO format supported by the project documentation.
- Confirm that the dump is complete and legally created from media you own or are entitled to use.
- Look up the exact release in the compatibility database; some entries distinguish regional or edition differences.
Firmware is installed, but a title still will not boot
- Verify that the firmware installation completed through File → Install Firmware.
- Check the game’s compatibility entry for required updates or known boot issues.
- Confirm that the title’s files were added through File → Add Games and are not merely copied beside the emulator executable.
Graphics are broken or the renderer is unavailable
- Return to Configuration → GPU and use a renderer actually exposed by your installation.
- Confirm that the GPU driver supports Vulkan 1.2 if you are trying Vulkan.
- Read the title-specific compatibility notes before applying broad graphics changes.
- Test one renderer or setting at a time so you can undo a change that made the issue worse.
The controller connects but the game does not respond correctly
- Reopen controller configuration and confirm that the selected handler matches the connected device.
- Remap and test each required button and analog control.
- Check whether the title requires motion or pressure-sensitive input that your current approach cannot provide.
- Try a wired connection if wireless pairing or input delivery is inconsistent.
The game runs differently after an update
Record the RPCS3 build, operating system, graphics driver and renderer, then recheck the live compatibility entry. Compatibility is maintained per game and can change with new emulator builds, driver changes and updated reports. Revert to the last known-good configuration only after identifying which update or setting changed the behavior.
Keeping the setup maintainable
Use the project’s download page for future RPCS3 updates and repeat its checksum-verification process. Before changing builds, note the version and the renderer, controller handler and game-specific settings that work for you. Revisit the compatibility entry for each important title after an update because statuses and recommendations are not static.
