The most straightforward way to run Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance software on a Steam Deck is to install EmuDeck in Desktop Mode, place your legally obtained ROM backups in its separate gb, gbc, and gba folders, then use Steam ROM Manager to create shortcuts for Steam Game Mode. RetroDECK provides an alternative single-package workflow. Neither project supplies games or BIOS files, so you must provide files you own or have permission to use.
This guide covers both routes, storage on the internal SSD or a microSD card, BIOS requirements, standalone mGBA and RetroArch cores, Steam integration, controls, saves, and the fixes for games that do not appear.

Choose between EmuDeck and RetroDECK
Both packages automate much of the setup, but they suit different preferences. EmuDeck is an installation script and configurator that installs and manages multiple emulators, exposes parser choices in Steam ROM Manager, and offers reset controls when a configuration becomes stale. RetroDECK is a bundled package with its own directory layout and configurator.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Decision point | EmuDeck | RetroDECK |
|---|---|---|
| Installation scope | Configurator that installs and manages emulators, including standalone mGBA and RetroArch. | Single bundled emulation package managed through its configurator. |
| Main folder convention | An Emulation folder on internal storage or an SD card; ROMs use separate gb, gbc, and gba directories. |
Uses a ~/retrodeck/ structure. |
| Steam integration | Steam ROM Manager creates individual non-Steam shortcuts; EmulationStation-DE is another documented launcher. | Add RetroDECK itself to Steam as a non-Steam game, then launch titles through its workflow. |
| Emulator choice | Choose a standalone emulator or a RetroArch core and select the matching parser. | Use the emulators and cores included in the package. |
| Maintenance | Manage, reinstall, reset, or apply a custom reset from EmuDeck’s tools. | Use the RetroDECK configurator for package-specific changes and recovery. |
| Best fit | Users who want granular emulator, parser, and per-game control. | Users who prefer one integrated package with fewer individual components. |
If you specifically want standalone mGBA, or you expect to switch between RetroArch cores, EmuDeck is the more flexible route. If you want a single interface and do not need to manage each emulator separately, RetroDECK can be simpler.

Prepare the Steam Deck
Use Desktop Mode for installation
- Press the Steam button, open Power, and choose Switch to Desktop.
- Connect a keyboard and mouse if that makes downloading, extracting, and moving files easier. The built-in controls also work, but file management is slower with a touch screen alone.
- Make sure the Deck has enough free space for the emulators, artwork, shader caches, save files, and ROM backups you intend to use.
- If you will use a microSD card, insert it before running the installer and format or mount it through Steam’s storage settings so it is available in Desktop Mode.
Decide where the Emulation folder will live
EmuDeck asks whether to place its Emulation directory on the internal SSD or on a microSD card. Internal storage generally offers the simplest path and avoids card-removal mistakes; an SD card preserves internal space and lets you move the library between compatible Deck installations. Choose one location deliberately because the ROM, BIOS, saves, and configuration paths all depend on it.
On an SD-card installation, EmuDeck documentation uses paths such as /run/media/mmcblk0p1/Emulation/roms/. The exact mount name can differ, so use the path shown by your Deck rather than copying a different card’s mount point.
Install EmuDeck
- In Desktop Mode, download the current EmuDeck installer from its official distribution point and run it.
- Follow the installer prompts until it asks for the Emulation-folder location. Select the internal drive or your mounted microSD card.
- Allow the installer to create the directory structure and install the emulators and tools you selected. The initial setup can take time while packages and configuration files are downloaded.
- When setup finishes, open EmuDeck and review its configuration screens. You can return later to install or reinstall individual components from Manage Emulators.
- Open the file manager and verify that the chosen location now contains
Emulation/roms/andEmulation/bios/. If those folders are not present, reopen EmuDeck and complete its setup instead of manually inventing a different hierarchy.
EmuDeck describes itself as “an installation script that helps you get started with emulation.” It does not include copyrighted games or BIOS images.
Install RetroDECK instead (or alongside EmuDeck)
RetroDECK is an alternative all-in-one package. Install it from Desktop Mode using its current instructions, then open its configurator to finish setup. Keep its ~/retrodeck/ layout intact and follow the package’s own folder prompts rather than placing files in EmuDeck’s directories.
For Steam Game Mode access, add RetroDECK to Steam as a non-Steam game. Launching the RetroDECK entry gives you its integrated workflow. If you also have EmuDeck installed, keep each package’s ROM and configuration folders separate; mixing parsers or moving files between layouts is a common cause of duplicate entries and missing games.

Place Game Boy ROMs in the correct folders
In the EmuDeck layout, use one folder per Nintendo handheld generation:
| System | EmuDeck ROM directory | Typical content |
|---|---|---|
| Game Boy | Emulation/roms/gb |
Original monochrome Game Boy backups |
| Game Boy Color | Emulation/roms/gbc |
Game Boy Color backups |
| Game Boy Advance | Emulation/roms/gba |
Game Boy Advance backups |
- Dump or transfer a backup from media you own using a method permitted in your jurisdiction.
- In Dolphin, browse to the Emulation directory you selected during installation.
- Open
roms, then the matchinggb, gbc, orgbafolder. - Copy the ROM backup into that folder. Keep the original file extension unless the emulator’s documentation specifically requires another format.
- Use clear filenames without unnecessary punctuation; this makes Steam ROM Manager entries easier to identify.
Do not place all three systems in one folder. Steam ROM Manager parsers use the folder and emulator association to determine which launcher should open a file.

EmuDeck’s manual states that it will not provide ROMs or BIOS files and that downloading games you do not own is not legal. Use your own cartridge dumps or other backups for which you have the necessary rights. Avoid ROM-download sites and unknown archives: they can contain modified files, malware, or misleading filenames. Scan transfers with your normal desktop security tools and keep an untouched backup of your original dumps.
Do you need a BIOS file?
Many Game Boy titles boot without a BIOS, especially when using a core that supplies compatible startup behavior. Requirements vary by emulator and core, so check the selected core’s documentation if a title fails to start or behaves incorrectly.
When a BIOS is required, place the file in EmuDeck’s Emulation/bios directory. RetroArch’s EmuDeck documentation treats that directory as RetroArch’s System folder, even though it is named bios rather than System. Do not scatter BIOS files inside individual ROM folders.

- Use a BIOS dump from hardware you own or are authorized to preserve.
- Keep the filename and capitalization expected by the core; an otherwise correct file may be ignored when its name is wrong.
- If a core reports a missing BIOS, verify the file is in the active Emulation directory, not an old internal-drive folder left behind after moving to an SD card.
- Do not download BIOS collections from untrusted sites.
Configure standalone mGBA
EmuDeck’s mGBA setup supports parsers for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance. Use this route when you want mGBA’s own interface and settings instead of a RetroArch core.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open EmuDeck in Desktop Mode and select Manage Emulators.
- Choose mGBA and install or reinstall it if it is not already present.
- Confirm that your ROMs are in the matching
gb,gbc, orgbadirectory. - Launch mGBA once from Desktop Mode. This creates its configuration and save directories and lets you verify that a controller and a test ROM work before creating Steam shortcuts.
- Use mGBA’s input settings to map the Deck controls. Bind the Game Boy buttons, Start, Select, and menu or hotkey functions to comfortable controls; reserve a combination you will remember for opening the emulator menu.
- Close mGBA normally so its configuration and save data are written before you move on to Steam ROM Manager.
EmuDeck’s mGBA documentation identifies the emulator executable, configuration location, and save/state directories. Let EmuDeck create those locations rather than relocating them manually; moving them can make existing saves appear to be missing.
Use RetroArch cores when you want a unified interface
RetroArch is available as a Flatpak option and can run cores such as Gambatte and mGBA for Game Boy systems. A core is the emulation engine loaded inside RetroArch; changing cores can alter compatibility, latency, menus, and save-state behavior.
- Install or enable RetroArch through EmuDeck’s emulator-management screens.
- Choose a Game Boy-capable core, such as Gambatte or the mGBA core, and test it with one ROM.
- Confirm that RetroArch’s system directory points to EmuDeck’s
Emulation/biosdirectory when a BIOS is needed. - Review RetroArch’s save, save-state, and configuration paths in its settings. Keep those paths on the same drive as the ROM library if you want the entire installation to remain portable.
- Once the test works, select the corresponding RetroArch parser in Steam ROM Manager rather than the standalone mGBA parser.
Do not create shortcuts with a RetroArch parser while expecting them to launch standalone mGBA, or the reverse. The shortcut records the emulator or core used to open the file.
Create Steam Game Mode shortcuts with Steam ROM Manager
Steam ROM Manager turns ROM files into non-Steam shortcuts. Those entries appear alongside your library games in Game Mode, so you can launch an individual title without first opening the desktop.

- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
- In Desktop Mode, open Steam ROM Manager from EmuDeck.
- Enable the parser that matches your setup: standalone mGBA, or the RetroArch parser for the specific core you tested.
- Run a preview or scan. Check that each title is associated with the expected
gb,gbc, orgbafolder and that artwork and names are sensible. - Disable unrelated parsers if they create duplicate entries or point to an emulator you are not using.
- Save the app list. Steam ROM Manager writes non-Steam shortcuts to your Steam library.
- Return to Game Mode, open the Library, and look under non-Steam games or the collection created by your setup. Launch one test title.
If you prefer a single browsing interface instead of one Steam entry per game, EmulationStation-DE is another documented launcher option. It can coexist with Steam shortcuts, but avoid importing the same library repeatedly if you do not want duplicates.
Set controls and display options in Game Mode
Start with emulator-wide defaults so every title has a predictable baseline. In Game Mode, open the game’s settings and adjust only the title that needs a change.
- Use the per-game controller layout when a title needs a different button arrangement, turbo behavior, or hotkey.
- Adjust aspect ratio, integer scaling, filters, and screen borders per game when a global setting makes a particular title look wrong.
- Keep frame pacing and synchronization defaults unless you have a specific compatibility problem; unnecessary changes make troubleshooting harder.
- Test suspend and resume after changing settings. A title that works from a cold launch can expose save-state or controller issues after waking the Deck.
EmuDeck recommends per-game tweaking when customization is needed. Store overrides only for the games that require them so future emulator updates do not leave you with a large set of conflicting global options.
Understand saves and save states
Cartridge saves and emulator save states are different. A cartridge save is written by the game and should travel with the corresponding emulator configuration. A save state is a snapshot of emulator memory and is more sensitive to core, emulator, and version changes.

- When a game appears to have lost progress, check that the shortcut is launching the same emulator and that the save directory did not change when you switched from internal storage to an SD card.
Troubleshoot missing games and launch failures
A game does not appear in Steam ROM Manager
- Confirm the ROM is in the correct system folder:
gb,gbc, orgba. - Check that the parser you enabled matches the emulator or core you intend to use.
- Run the preview again and look for extension or permission errors.
- Save the app list after the title appears; previewing alone does not update Steam.
A shortcut exists but launches the wrong emulator
Return to Steam ROM Manager and disable the incorrect parser. Enable only the parser for standalone mGBA or the RetroArch core you tested, then regenerate the app list. Delete obsolete non-Steam shortcuts in Steam if duplicates remain.

Steam ROM Manager settings seem stale
Use EmuDeck’s Reset configuration or Custom Reset action, then configure the parser again and regenerate shortcuts. Resetting is preferable to manually editing generated shortcut files, because a hand edit can be overwritten the next time the manager runs.
A BIOS warning appears
Verify that the BIOS is in Emulation/bios, that the active emulator points to the same Emulation directory, and that the filename and region expected by the core are correct. Remember that many Game Boy games do not require a BIOS, so a warning may indicate a core-specific option rather than a universal requirement.
Dolphin cannot show a configuration folder
Linux hides directories whose names begin with a dot. In Dolphin, enable Show Hidden Files when inspecting locations such as .var or .config. Do not delete hidden directories unless you are intentionally resetting a configuration and have backed up saves.

Open the RetroDECK configurator, verify that the ROMs follow its ~/retrodeck/ layout, and confirm that RetroDECK itself was added to Steam as a non-Steam game. Do not use EmuDeck’s parser against RetroDECK’s folders.
A game worked before moving to an SD card
Check that the SD card is mounted, that the shortcut points to the new Emulation path, and that saves and BIOS files were copied along with ROMs. Regenerate Steam ROM Manager shortcuts after a storage move.
Keep the installation maintainable
- Back up ROMs, BIOS files, saves, save states, and emulator configuration before a major update or storage migration.
- Keep one known-good test ROM for each system so you can distinguish a library problem from an emulator problem.
- Document whether each shortcut uses standalone mGBA, Gambatte, or the mGBA RetroArch core.
- Regenerate shortcuts after changing the Emulation-folder location, parser selection, or emulator executable.
- Use the package’s own update and reset tools instead of mixing files from unrelated installations.
The practical setup in one pass
- Switch to Desktop Mode and install EmuDeck, choosing internal storage or a microSD card.
- Place your own backups in
Emulation/roms/gb,Emulation/roms/gbc, andEmulation/roms/gba. - Put any required, legally obtained BIOS files in
Emulation/bios. - Install or configure standalone mGBA, or select a RetroArch core such as Gambatte or mGBA.
- Test one game and verify controls and saves.
- Run Steam ROM Manager with the matching parser and save the app list.
- Switch to Game Mode, launch the new shortcut, and apply per-game overrides only where necessary.
This arrangement keeps system folders predictable, makes emulator selection explicit, and gives you a repeatable recovery path when a shortcut or configuration stops working.
