There are three different projects that readers commonly call the “Dark Souls combat mod for World of Warcraft.” WoW Souls is an unofficial, single-player prototype that injects Dark Souls Remastered combat into an unofficial World of Warcraft 1.12 implementation. It is not a normal addon and does not have a documented, stable public installer. Action Combat Mode is the practical choice if you want action-oriented controls in a supported WoW addon. DarkSoulsSCT only changes scrolling combat text; it does not add Souls combat mechanics.
Identify which project you mean
Installing the wrong project is the most common source of confusion. The names describe very different software, with different requirements and different expectations about multiplayer, updates and configuration.

If your goal is rolls with invincibility frames, stamina use, lock-on and recovering souls from a corpse, you are describing WoW Souls. If you want a realistic addon installation that you can configure from WoW’s interface, use Action Combat Mode. Add DarkSoulsSCT only when the visual presentation of combat numbers is what you want.
What WoW Souls is—and what it is not
Wccftech described WoW Souls on October 14, 2026 as “a single player prototype that injects Dark Souls Remastered combat into an unofficial version of World of Warcraft.” The project is built around benilla, an open-source client written in Rust and Bevy. It reads the user’s existing installations of World of Warcraft 1.12 and Dark Souls Remastered rather than behaving like an addon loaded by the standard WoW client.

- It is not documented as a multiplayer realm or a replacement for the official client.
- The available description does not establish a stable public installer, launcher sequence or finished configuration screen.
That distinction matters for safety and expectations. An addon can normally be disabled from the character-selection AddOns menu and updated per game flavor. A separate client prototype may require its own executable, asset paths and compatibility checks. Do not download an unverified executable advertised as a “one-click WoW Souls installer” and assume it is the project described by the report.
How to prepare for the WoW Souls prototype
The documented prerequisites are specific: a local World of Warcraft 1.12 installation, a local Dark Souls Remastered installation and the benilla client. The report does not publish verified paths, command-line switches or a universal launcher procedure, so the following is a preparation checklist rather than a fabricated installer guide.
Check the two source installations
- Confirm that you have a working World of Warcraft 1.12 installation. The prototype is described against that version, not current retail data.
- Confirm that Dark Souls Remastered is installed locally and can launch normally. The prototype reads its combat data from that installation.
- Keep both installations unchanged until the prototype’s own documentation tells you how it locates them. Do not rename executables or move data folders while troubleshooting.
Obtain the client from the project’s own release information
The October 14 report is news coverage, not installation documentation. Before running anything, check the project’s official repository or release notes for a current build, supported operating systems, required runtime components and checksum information. Those details may change independently of the news article.

Because no verified public installer or complete settings workflow is documented, be prepared for the client to request the locations of the two game installations or to require a configuration file. Use only settings and paths described by the project maintainers. If a download asks for your account password, bypasses the normal game launcher without explanation or modifies unrelated system files, stop and verify its provenance.

The prototype’s appeal is that it imports combat data and timing concepts from Dark Souls Remastered rather than merely changing the camera. The reported mechanics include the following.

Light and heavy attacks
- R1: a light attack chain of three moves.
- R2: a heavy attack.
- Roll attack: pressing the light-attack input after a roll creates a rolling attack.
Animations, attack timings, stamina costs and damage multipliers are taken from Dark Souls data. That means the attacks should be understood as timed actions, not instant tab-target abilities. The report does not provide a complete keybind chart, so do not assume keyboard labels from one build will match another.
Dodging and movement
Dodging uses the Dark Souls roll animation with invincibility frames and root motion. Invincibility frames are short windows during which an incoming hit can fail to connect; they are not permanent immunity. Root motion means the animation controls displacement, so turning or interrupting a roll may not behave like ordinary WoW movement.

The camera orbits in a Souls-style view. Lock-on holds a target while the character strafes or backpedals around it. This changes positioning from selecting a target and facing it automatically to managing distance, attack angles and dodge timing.
Hit feedback and death recovery
Successful hits briefly freeze the frame, providing impact feedback. On death, carried souls remain at the corpse. The described recovery route starts from the nearby Abbey, so a failed attempt creates a run-back objective rather than deleting the currency immediately. The report does not specify every enemy, map or recovery rule in the prototype.
Install Action Combat Mode as a normal addon
Action Combat Mode is the documented route for readers who want action-oriented WoW controls without replacing the game client. Its CurseForge listing was updated on October 15, 2026, lists version 5.0.3 as the current release and shows support for Retail, Forever, MoP Classic, Titan Reforged Classic and Classic flavors. Because those labels and version numbers are volatile, select the flavor you actually run before downloading.

Choose the matching release
- Open the Action Combat Mode listing in CurseForge or the CurseForge app.
- Select the profile or game flavor that matches your installation: Retail, Forever, MoP Classic, Titan Reforged Classic or another Classic flavor shown by the listing.
- Install the release marked for that flavor. Do not copy a Retail package into a Classic client or rely on an older download simply because its folder name looks familiar.
- If you install manually, place the addon folder in that client’s
InterfaceAddOnsdirectory, preserving the folder structure supplied by the download.
Verify that WoW loaded it
- Start the matching WoW client and reach the character-selection screen.
- Open the AddOns list and confirm that Action Combat Mode appears.
- Enable “Load out of date AddOns” only when the release is explicitly intended for your flavor but the client reports a minor interface-version mismatch. An out-of-date warning does not prove compatibility.
- Enter the world and wait for the addon’s first-login setup prompt.
Open the configuration panel
If the first-login prompt does not appear, use Game Menu (ESC) > Options > AddOns > Action Combat Mode. The options panel exposes the addon’s aiming, targeting, camera and other action-control preferences. Exact labels can change with releases, so use the descriptions shown in your installed version rather than copying a setting name from an older video.
Configure action controls without losing ordinary WoW controls
Start with aiming
Enable the aiming behavior you can control comfortably, then test it against a stationary training target. Action-oriented aiming changes where attacks are directed; it can feel less predictable than tab-targeting when the camera is moving or several targets overlap. Adjust sensitivity or equivalent aiming options gradually, changing one setting at a time.
Set targeting behavior
Decide whether your primary interaction should select the target under your reticle, preserve a selected target, or combine both behaviors. Test target switching on two nearby training dummies before entering a group encounter. If the addon offers a target-retention or lock-on option, verify that it keeps the intended enemy while you strafe and backpedal.
Adjust the camera
Choose a camera distance and rotation speed that keep your character and the threat visible. A Souls-style orbit is useful for circling an enemy, but excessive distance can make ground effects and hit reactions harder to read. Test camera movement while moving backward, turning sharply and entering a doorway; those transitions expose conflicts with standard camera bindings.
Preserve an escape route
Keep a familiar key or button available for ordinary movement and menu access. If the addon captures a mouse button or movement key, make sure you can still open the Game Menu, release a stuck cursor mode and disable the addon from the AddOns menu after a reload. The exact emergency binding depends on the options exposed by your release.

Test in a low-risk area
- Use a training dummy or quiet outdoor area.
- Check basic movement, camera orbit, target selection, attack direction and disengagement.
- Test a multi-target pull only after single-target behavior is predictable.
- Reload the interface after changing a cluster of settings and confirm that the values persist.
Install DarkSoulsSCT only for the visual effect
DarkSoulsSCT is often mistaken for a combat overhaul because of its name. CurseForge describes it as configurable scrolling combat text anchored to nameplates. Its latest listed file is version 0.5 for Retail 10.0.2, uploaded January 15, 2023, with 3,494 downloads recorded on the 2023 listing.
Install it like any other addon, using the file that matches the supported client version shown on its listing. Its role is presentation: positioning and stacking combat text. It does not add rolls, invincibility frames, lock-on, stamina costs, Dark Souls attack chains or corpse-based soul recovery. It can be used alongside an action-control addon only when the versions are compatible, but it cannot turn ordinary WoW combat into WoW Souls.

Choose WoW Souls only if you specifically want to experiment with an unofficial client and accept that installation instructions may change. Choose Action Combat Mode when you need an addon that can be installed and configured inside a supported WoW flavor. Choose DarkSoulsSCT when the only requirement is Dark Souls-like combat-text styling.

The WoW Souls download has no installer
That is consistent with the available description. Do not substitute an arbitrary launcher or a repackaged executable. Recheck the project’s own repository and release notes for the current build, required paths and operating-system support.

Verify that the installation is the required World of Warcraft 1.12 or Dark Souls Remastered version, that the folders have not been renamed and that the client has permission to read them. Because no universal path syntax is documented, follow the project’s own configuration instructions rather than guessing command-line arguments.

Action Combat Mode is missing in game
- Confirm that the addon folder is inside the correct client’s
InterfaceAddOnsdirectory. - Check the character-selection AddOns list and enable the addon.
- Verify that the downloaded release matches Retail, Forever, MoP Classic, Titan Reforged Classic or the Classic flavor you launched.
- Restart the client after changing files; a reload cannot repair a package installed in the wrong directory.
The setup prompt never appeared
Open ESC > Options > AddOns > Action Combat Mode manually. If the panel is absent, the addon did not load, the package is for another flavor or the folder contains an extra nested directory. Reinstall the matching release and check the AddOns list again.
Controls conflict with another addon or keybind
Disable competing action-camera or targeting features temporarily, reset one category of Action Combat Mode settings and test after a reload. Restore your normal movement and menu bindings before testing combat. If the conflict returns, record which setting caused it and use the addon’s reset controls rather than deleting unrelated interface files.
DarkSoulsSCT changes numbers but combat feels normal
That is expected. DarkSoulsSCT changes scrolling combat-text presentation only. Install Action Combat Mode for aiming behavior or use the separate WoW Souls prototype for the reported Souls mechanics.
Version and support cautions
CurseForge metadata can change: supported flavors, version numbers, download counts and option names are maintained by the addon project. The Action Combat Mode listing showed 93,304 downloads at the 2026 access time, but that number is a snapshot rather than a quality guarantee. DarkSoulsSCT’s 3,494-download figure belongs to its 2023 listing and should not be interpreted as current activity.
The WoW Souls description is newer but less operationally complete: it establishes the prototype’s concept and mechanics, not a guaranteed public build. Before installing any release, verify the project’s own documentation, supported client versions and security guidance. Keep backups of addon settings and avoid testing an experimental client with valuable or irreplaceable files in the same directory.
