Before applying rules on a remote server, allow the server’s real SSH port, keep your current session open, and prove that a second session works. Ubuntu already uses UFW as its default firewall frontend, so choose which tool will own the host policy before enabling CSF.

What CSF does on an Ubuntu server
ConfigServer Security & Firewall (CSF) is a stateful packet-inspection firewall and a login/intrusion-detection application for Linux servers. It provides a management layer over the kernel firewall facilities exposed through iptables or nftables, while its Login Failure Daemon (LFD) watches for repeated login failures and other patterns that should trigger defensive action.

Ubuntu’s documented default firewall configuration tool is UFW. CSF is therefore an alternative management stack, not an Ubuntu desktop application. The important operational decision is ownership: one system should be the authoritative place where you maintain the host’s allow and deny policy.
Decide whether CSF is the right firewall owner

Do not let both tools independently maintain the same policy without a migration plan. Conflicting rule sets make it difficult to determine why a connection is accepted or blocked. Inventory existing UFW rules and any other firewall automation, decide which system will own the policy, and make changes during a maintenance window if the server is production-critical.

Prerequisites and safety checks
- Root access or a sudo-capable account on the Ubuntu server.
- A current record of the SSH daemon’s listening port and bind addresses. Do not assume the port from a template; check the server’s actual SSH configuration.
- A list of every service that must accept inbound or outbound traffic, including administration, web, mail, DNS, databases, monitoring and application-specific ports.
- A second way to reach the machine, such as a provider console, if your hosting environment supplies one.
- A second SSH client or terminal that can be tested before the first session is closed.
- A decision about whether UFW or CSF will own the firewall policy.
Firewall changes are state changes on the host, not merely edits to a text file. Keep the original remote shell open until a new connection has authenticated and reached a usable prompt. If the new connection fails, use the original shell to correct the configuration or revert the change.
Install CSF’s Ubuntu dependencies
The current project installation instructions list these packages for Debian and Ubuntu:

On Debian 13, the project documents a variation that also includes libwww-perl and postfix. That variation is specific to Debian 13; use the dependency set appropriate to the operating system and release shown by your server.
On Ubuntu, install the listed packages with the system package manager. A typical sequence is:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ipset libcrypt-ssleay-perl libio-socket-inet6-perl libio-socket-ssl-perl libnet-libidn-perl libsocket6-perl perl wgetIf your environment is Debian 13 rather than Ubuntu, include the two additional packages documented for that release. Confirm that package installation completes without unresolved dependencies before moving to the archive test.

Download the stable CSF archive
The vendor publishes stable archives without requiring a license. You can download either format:

Use a writable working directory rather than extracting directly into /etc. The download service also supports a tag parameter for selecting a specific release. The insiders channel is separate: it requires a sponsorship license, arrives before public stable releases, and may contain unresolved issues. Unless you have a specific reason and a valid license to test an insiders build, use the stable archive.
After downloading, verify that the archive exists and that you are working with the file you intended to retrieve. Extract it with the archive utility available on the server, then enter the extracted csf directory.
Run the pre-install compatibility test
From the directory containing the extracted archive, run the project’s test script:
sudo perl csf/csftest.plA successful test reports:
RESULT: csf should function on this serverTreat any other result as a stop condition. Resolve the reported kernel, module, package or permission issue before installing. Installing over a failed compatibility test can leave you with a service that appears present but cannot apply its rules reliably.

Install CSF and verify its services
The extracted archive contains the installer supplied for that release. Run that installer with root privileges from the extracted directory, following the archive’s included instructions for the script name and invocation. The installer places CSF’s configuration under /etc/csf and registers the firewall and Login Failure Daemon services.
When the quick installation flow completes, the project documentation says CSF and LFD should be up and running with minimal configuration. Verify both services with your distribution’s service-management tools before changing policy. If either service is not running, inspect its startup error and correct that problem before enabling stricter rules.
Configure /etc/csf/csf.conf before enabling enforcement
/etc/csf/csf.conf is the main configuration file. Make a backup copy before editing so that you can identify or restore the previous state. Change only the settings required for your host, and keep a record of each change in your server’s configuration management system.
Set inbound and outbound TCP ports
Review the configuration entries for inbound and outbound TCP traffic. Add the ports required by services that must receive connections and the destinations the server must contact. Use the actual service inventory, not a generic list copied from another machine. A web server, mail host, database server and private application server each need different rules.

Review the corresponding inbound and outbound UDP entries. DNS, monitoring, VPN, voice, discovery and application protocols may use UDP even when the primary service uses TCP. If a service uses both protocols, list both deliberately; allowing only one can create an apparently intermittent failure.

Preserve SSH access
Find the SSH daemon’s real listening port and explicitly allow it before applying the firewall. If SSH listens on a nonstandard port, allowing a default port will not protect your administration access. Also account for the source networks from which administrators connect if your policy restricts origins.
Apply the safety sequence below:
- Keep the current SSH session open.
- Confirm the port and address family used by the existing session.
- Add that SSH port to the permitted TCP list in
csf.conf. - Add every application port required for normal operation.
- Save the file and apply the configuration.
- Open a second SSH session from an allowed source and authenticate successfully.
- Only after the second session works, close the original session.
Review logging, address lists and blocklists
CSF’s documented tuning areas include logging, address lists and blocklists. Decide which events need local records, which trusted addresses must always be allowed, and which networks or addresses should be denied. Keep allow entries narrow: an overly broad trusted range can bypass the protection you intended to create. Review blocklists for stale entries so that a previous incident does not permanently deny a legitimate administrator or service.
Review IPSET-related options
IPSET can represent groups of addresses efficiently and is one of the reasons the ipset package is included in the dependency set. Enable and tune the related options only after understanding how your distribution’s kernel and firewall backend handle sets. If you maintain large address collections, document their source, update method and expiration policy.
Apply the configuration safely
After saving /etc/csf/csf.conf, reload and restart CSF and LFD with the vendor-documented command:
sudo csf -raThis operation applies the current configuration rather than merely editing the file. Watch the command output for errors, then inspect service status and test the connections your host requires. Test from the same network locations your users, administrators and monitoring systems use; a rule that works from one source can still fail from another.
At minimum, validate:
- A new SSH login on the configured administration port.
- Each public application endpoint that should be reachable.
- Required outbound connections, such as package repositories, APIs, mail relays or DNS resolvers.
- Any private service that must be reachable only from a defined administrative or application network.
- Logging and LFD behavior expected from the policy.
Common failure modes and recovery
SSH stops responding immediately after the reload
Do not close the original shell. Use it to check that the configured SSH port exactly matches the daemon’s listening port, that the source address is permitted, and that the relevant TCP entry was saved in csf.conf. Correct the file, run sudo csf -ra again, and retest from a second client.
A web or application service is reachable locally but not remotely
Confirm whether the service uses TCP, UDP or both, then compare its listening ports with the corresponding inbound entries. Check the service’s bind address as well: a process bound only to loopback will not become publicly reachable simply because the firewall permits its port.
Outbound operations fail after CSF is enabled
Review outbound TCP and UDP entries, not just inbound rules. Package updates, external APIs, DNS, mail delivery and monitoring commonly require outbound access. Add only the destinations and protocols the host actually needs.
Rules behave differently from the previous UFW setup
Audit which tool is currently loading policy and whether both are active. Choose one owner, translate the required rules carefully, and remove accidental duplication. Changing ownership without first recording the existing allow and deny requirements can remove access that another tool previously supplied.
The compatibility test does not pass
Return to the dependency and platform checks. Confirm that the required packages are installed, that the kernel and firewall backend are supported by the release you downloaded, and that you ran the test from the extracted archive. Do not proceed until the test reports that CSF should function on the server.
Stable releases, insiders builds and ongoing maintenance
Stable CSF archives are available without a license. The insiders channel is for sponsors with a valid license key; its builds arrive before public stable releases and can contain unresolved issues. Production Ubuntu servers should normally track the stable channel unless you have a controlled test environment and a reason to evaluate an earlier build.

Keep the SSH recovery procedure documented, periodically test a second administrative session, and review address lists, blocklists, logs and IPSET data for stale entries. When upgrading CSF, repeat the compatibility check and compare the new archive’s configuration changes with your local policy before applying them.
