Identify the product before installing anything
The installation method tells you which product you have. WordPress uses the Coywolf SEO ZIP upload or a directory under wp-content/plugins/coywolf-seo. EmDash SEO Core is installed with pnpm and registered in astro.config.mjs. EmDash marketplace plugins are installed from the admin Registry and run through a configured sandbox.
| Product | Platform | Installation | Title ownership | Main scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coywolf SEO | WordPress | Upload a ZIP in Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, or copy the plugin directory | Controlled by Coywolf when title rewriting is enabled in Settings | Site identity, metadata, schema defaults, canonical and robots controls, redirects, links, robots.txt, and import/export |
| EmDash SEO Core | EmDash CMS projects | pnpm add @masonjames/emdash-seo-core, then register the integration in astro.config.mjs |
Not owned by SEO Core v1; the theme or core layer must generate <title> |
Normalized metadata, robots policy, Open Graph fallback, publisher data, JSON-LD support, and deduplication |
| EmDash SEO Suite | EmDash marketplace | Admin → Registry → find the plugin → Install → review consent | Depends on the host and plugin configuration | Focus-keyphrase analysis, readability, JSON-LD, redirects, and SEO health |
The marketplace listing identifies SEO Suite as version 0.2.0 under an MIT license and shows an update date of September 29, 2026. That listing is separate from the npm package and from Coywolf SEO for WordPress.

Install Coywolf SEO in WordPress
Before you begin
- Have WordPress administrator access.
- Obtain the Coywolf SEO ZIP archive or the project directory from the official Coywolf distribution.
- Make a backup or confirm that your host can restore the site before changing SEO output.
- Record which existing plugin currently controls titles, descriptions, schema, redirects, and sitemaps.
Upload and activate the ZIP
- Sign in to WordPress and open Plugins → Add New.
- Select Upload Plugin.
- Choose the Coywolf SEO ZIP file. Do not unzip it in the browser unless the distribution specifically provides an installation directory.
- Select Install Now and wait for WordPress to finish unpacking the plugin.
- Select Activate Plugin.
Alternative directory installation
If your host provides file-manager or SFTP access, place the complete plugin directory at wp-content/plugins/coywolf-seo. Return to Plugins in WordPress and activate Coywolf SEO from the installed-plugin list. A common failure is an extra nested folder such as wp-content/plugins/coywolf-seo/coywolf-seo; the directory containing the plugin’s main files must be directly inside wp-content/plugins.
Confirm that the theme can print metadata
Coywolf’s front-end output is rendered through WordPress’s wp_head() hook. Open the active theme’s header template and confirm that the hook is present inside the document’s <head> element. A theme that omits or removes wp_head() can leave the plugin active in the dashboard while producing no title, description, canonical, Open Graph, or schema output in page source.
Purge every relevant cache
After activation, purge page-cache, host-level, and CDN caches. Otherwise visitors and source-code checks may continue receiving HTML generated before Coywolf was activated. Test an uncached page after purging and inspect the raw HTML rather than relying only on a browser extension.
Configure Coywolf’s site-wide identity and schema
Site Details
Open Coywolf’s Site Details screen and complete the identity fields that are used across the site:
- Enter the site name and tagline exactly as they should appear in search and social metadata.
- Choose whether the site represents an Organization or a Person.
- Set the default Open Graph image. Use a stable, publicly reachable image that can be fetched by social crawlers.
- Choose schema defaults for posts and pages.
- For authors, provide the Schema.org Person properties that are available and accurate for each author.
Do not select an Organization merely because the site has a company domain. Select the entity that actually publishes the content, then keep the name, logo, and author information consistent with the visible site.
Page defaults and Article schema
Pages default to no Article type in Coywolf. That is deliberate: a static contact or services page is not automatically an article. If your editorial pages genuinely represent articles, set the default under Site Details → Pages, or override the schema type in the individual page’s SEO panel. Check the rendered JSON-LD after changing the setting; a dashboard selection alone does not prove that the front end is emitting the intended type.

Configure titles, descriptions, robots, and canonicals
Global settings
Use Coywolf’s Settings screen for access rights, title behavior, meta-description behavior, and robots-indexing options. The important decisions are:
- Force-rewrite-titles: enable it only when Coywolf should replace the title output from the theme or another SEO component.
- Meta descriptions: decide whether Coywolf should print a description, use a manual excerpt, generate one with an optional AI feature, or exclude descriptions entirely.
- Robots indexing: establish the site-wide default, then use per-content overrides for exceptions.
For a normal post, the meta description is taken from its manual excerpt. If the excerpt is empty, the description may therefore be absent unless you enable an AI description option. If you do not want descriptions generated or printed, use the explicit exclusion setting rather than leaving the result ambiguous.
Per-post and per-page overrides
Open the Coywolf SEO panel while editing a post or page to override the schema type, set noindex or nofollow, and enter a canonical URL. Use a canonical override only when the preferred URL is intentional and stable; pointing many unrelated pages at one URL can remove useful pages from indexing.
Typical uses include marking a thin utility page noindex, changing a syndicated article’s canonical to the original publication, or selecting Article schema for an editorial page when the site-wide page default remains non-Article.
Set up redirects, links, robots.txt, and migration tools
Redirects
Use Redirects to add and test 301, 302, 307, 308, or 410 rules. Match the status code to the intent:
- 301: a permanent replacement where search signals should move.
- 302: a temporary destination.
- 307: a temporary redirect that preserves the request method.
- 308: a permanent redirect that preserves the request method.
- 410: the resource is intentionally gone and has no replacement.
Test both the old URL and the destination, and check for chains or loops. Keep one redirect owner wherever possible; running multiple redirect systems can produce conflicting rules.
Link Manager
Link Manager inventories internal and external links. Use it to find broken destinations, outdated internal paths, and links that should be reviewed after a migration. The feature requests linked URLs, so treat the scan as network activity and account for any access controls on the target sites.
Robots.txt Manager
Use Robots.txt Manager to create and test robots rules. A robots.txt rule controls crawler access; it does not guarantee de-indexing. For pages that must not appear in search, use the appropriate robots meta setting or an HTTP response header as well as reviewing crawl rules.
Import and export
Coywolf can import and export settings, author properties, redirect rules, and robots rules as JSON. API keys are not exported. Treat an export as configuration data: store it securely, review it before importing, and re-enter secrets on the destination site.

Handle an existing SEO plugin safely
Coywolf documents switches that suppress front-end output and edit-screen boxes from Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO, SEOPress, or The SEO Framework while allowing their sitemaps and redirects to continue running. Do not disable everything blindly. Plan the migration as a controlled change:
- List the current plugin’s title, description, schema, sitemap, canonical, redirect, and robots responsibilities.
- Choose Coywolf or the existing plugin as the owner for each responsibility.
- Enable Coywolf’s suppression switches only for the components you are moving.
- Leave sitemap and redirect services running only when you have confirmed that Coywolf is not duplicating them.
- Compare representative source pages before and after the change, including a post, a page, an archive, and a redirected URL.
Duplicate metadata is usually harder to diagnose than missing metadata because the browser still displays a plausible result. Inspect the complete HTML and JSON-LD, not just the visible title.
Verify a Coywolf installation
Use this short acceptance check after configuration:
Rank #4
- The plugin is active and no PHP or JavaScript error appears in the administrator or front end.
- The active theme calls
wp_head(). - Page, host, and CDN caches have been purged.
- The source contains one intentional title, one canonical, the expected description behavior, and the intended Open Graph image.
- Posts and pages use the schema defaults you selected, with individual overrides where needed.
- Robots directives match the indexing decision for the URL.
- Redirect tests return the chosen status code without a chain or loop.
- Existing sitemap and redirect systems are not producing duplicate output.
Install EmDash SEO Core with pnpm
Requirements and package installation
EmDash SEO Core is not a WordPress plugin. It is an EmDash package for an Astro-based project. The host must use emdash version range ^0.1.0.
Recommended Free Tools
- From the EmDash project root, run
pnpm add @masonjames/emdash-seo-core. - Open
astro.config.mjsand register the EmDash integration according to the host project’s integration pattern. - Ensure the theme creates a page context for each rendered page.
- Render
EmDashHeadinside the document’s<head>. - Build and inspect a representative page before deploying.
SEO Core v1 does not own the HTML <title> element. Keep title generation in the theme or core layer, then pass the resulting page context to SEO Core. Installing the package without rendering EmDashHead leaves the integration present in configuration but unable to print its metadata.
Register the integration
The exact import and integration syntax depends on the EmDash host template. Add the package to the project’s existing integration array rather than creating a second configuration file. Keep the registration in the same configuration path used by the rest of the EmDash application, then restart the development server so Astro reloads the dependency.
Configure the normalized settings
Provide the normalized settings object expected by the host integration. Its supported decisions include:
- Homepage description.
- Default robots policy:
index,follow,noindex,follow, ornoindex,nofollow. - Fallback Open Graph image.
- Publisher type: person or organization.
- Publisher name.
- Publisher logo URL.
sameAsURLs for verified social or identity profiles.
Use page-specific values first. SEO Core fills supported gaps from the normalized defaults, and EmDash deduplicates the final metadata. Keep the fallback image and publisher details valid even when a page does not provide its own values.

Understand title and precedence behavior
Because SEO Core does not generate the HTML title in v1, a missing title is a theme or page-context problem rather than a missing SEO Core option. For descriptions, robots, Open Graph values, publisher information, and supported structured data, page-specific values take precedence over normalized defaults. Confirm that the page context is populated before debugging the component itself.

Install an SEO plugin from the EmDash marketplace
Use the Registry workflow
- Open the EmDash administrator and select Registry.
- Search for the SEO plugin or SEO Suite.
- Inspect the displayed version, publisher, metadata, requested permissions, and verification status.
- Select Install.
- Read the consent dialog and approve only after the permissions match the plugin’s purpose.
Marketplace plugins require a configured sandbox runner. If the runner is missing or unavailable, installation may complete in the registry but the plugin will not load at runtime.
Review SEO Suite permissions
The SEO Suite listing requests permissions covering content, structure, unsaved edits, suggestions, publishing controls, taxonomy, redirects, and media. Those permissions can affect both editorial workflows and site configuration. Review them with the same care you would apply to a WordPress administrator plugin, especially on a shared newsroom or client installation.
Configuration registration and sandbox errors
EmDash supports different registration paths for configuration-installed and sandboxed plugins. Use the path required by the host project; a configuration install may require a plugins: [] entry, while a sandboxed install may require a sandboxed: [] entry. Putting the plugin in the wrong array can make it appear installed but unavailable to the application.

Understand data handling before enabling optional features
Coywolf states that its default installation has no analytics, tracking, or data gathering. That statement applies to the default plugin behavior, not every optional integration.
Opt-in AI features send content to the selected Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google Gemini service; the Image Text feature can send images as well. IndexNow sends changed URLs to Bing. Entity enrichment can query Wikidata. Link Manager requests the URLs linked from your site. Enable these features only after checking your organization’s privacy, contract, and editorial requirements.
The practical distinction is simple: installing the base plugin is different from authorizing an external service. Keep optional AI, enrichment, indexing notifications, and link scans disabled unless their data flow is acceptable.
Choose the right installation path
| If you have… | Use… | Do not use… |
|---|---|---|
| A WordPress site and a Coywolf ZIP | Coywolf SEO’s Upload Plugin workflow or the wp-content/plugins/coywolf-seo directory |
pnpm or the EmDash Registry |
| An Astro-based EmDash project | EmDash SEO Core, registered in astro.config.mjs |
A WordPress plugin directory |
| An EmDash administrator with marketplace access | Registry installation after reviewing permissions and sandbox requirements | Copying npm package files manually into the marketplace runtime |
The safest sequence is to identify the platform, install only the matching package, configure one metadata owner, purge caches, and validate the rendered HTML and JSON-LD. The combined phrase “Coywolf Pack EmDash SEO Plugin” should not be treated as a single downloadable plugin name.
