The correct AmneziaVPN setup depends on the connection you have: Amnezia Free uses an in-app regional service, Amnezia Premium uses a vpn:// subscription key, and Self-hosted VPN connects to a Linux server that you own or rent. Install the current app from an official store or Amnezia release, then follow the matching route below. You do not need a server for Free or Premium.
Choose the AmneziaVPN connection that matches your situation
AmneziaVPN presents three different ways to connect. Choosing the wrong one is the most common setup mistake, so identify your route before entering credentials or changing settings.

Free is a regional access service rather than a general list of every website. Amnezia says it is intended for certain sites in Russia and some other regions with strict internet censorship; it does not provide YouTube access in Russia and does not publish a complete list of covered resources. Premium is the subscription-key path. Self-hosting gives you control of the server but requires server administration and is entirely optional.

How do I install AmneziaVPN on my phone?
Android: Google Play installation
- Open Google Play and search for the official AmneziaVPN app.
- Install it, then launch the app and approve Android’s VPN connection request when it appears.
- Continue with the Free, Premium or Self-hosted setup in the connection section below.
Android may stop a VPN from running in the background when battery optimization is enabled. If the connection drops whenever the screen is off or the app is not in the foreground, disable battery optimization for AmneziaVPN in your phone’s battery or app-management settings.
Android: install without Google Play
When Google Play is unavailable, Amnezia’s FAQ directs users to download the latest APK from the official Amnezia GitHub releases page. Download only the current release from that official source.
- Open the official release page in your browser and download the APK that matches your device.
- When Android blocks the installation, open the permission prompt and allow Install unknown apps for the browser or file manager you used. Do not grant this permission broadly to unrelated apps.
- Install the APK, open AmneziaVPN and approve the VPN permission request.
- After installation, return to the same official release page for updates. APK installations do not update automatically.
An APK is an installation method, not a separate service tier. You still choose Free, Premium or Self-hosted inside the app.

AmneziaVPN requires iOS 16 or later, but the app is not listed in every App Store region. The availability and workaround differ depending on whether you need Premium or Free. Use Amnezia’s current regional instructions and the alternative app it specifies for your situation; do not assume that changing settings at random will make an unavailable listing appear.
- Check whether AmneziaVPN or DefaultVPN is available in your App Store region.
- If it is listed, install the official app and allow the iOS VPN configuration when prompted.
- If it is not listed, follow the official regional procedure for obtaining the appropriate app or instruction set. The Premium and Free paths do not necessarily use the same alternative.
- Open the app and continue with the matching connection route below.
iOS has no built-in AmneziaVPN KillSwitch, and autostart is not available in the iOS app. Those limitations are normal for this platform.

How do I set up AmneziaVPN on Windows?
- Confirm that the computer runs Windows 10 version 1709 or later, or Windows 11 x64.
- Download the latest stable Windows
.exefrom Amnezia’s official release listing. - Run the installer and keep the destination exactly at
C:Program FilesAmneziaVPN. The installation guide warns that changing this path can stop the application from working correctly. - Finish the installation and restart Windows if requested or if the app does not detect its network components immediately.
- Open AmneziaVPN and choose Free, Premium or Self-hosted.
If Windows reports that MSVCP140.dll or MSVCP141.dll is missing during Premium setup, consult the current Amnezia troubleshooting instructions before repairing the installation. The Premium guide refers to a Visual C++ redistributable file in the installation directory, but filenames and repair steps can change between releases.
How do I install AmneziaVPN on macOS?
- Verify that the Mac runs macOS 14 or later.
- Download the latest stable
.pkgfrom Amnezia’s official release listing. - Open the package, follow the installer, and authorize it in macOS when requested.
- Restart the Mac if the installer or the app asks you to.
- Launch AmneziaVPN and add the appropriate connection.
The current AmneziaVPN app does not support earlier macOS versions. Amnezia lists AmneziaWG as an alternative for those systems, but it is a different application and may have different setup requirements.
How do I install AmneziaVPN on Linux?
- Check that your distribution and architecture appear in Amnezia’s supported Linux list. The documented package is for x64 systems.
- Download the latest stable file ending in
_linux_x64.run. - Make the file executable using your distribution’s normal file-permission method, then run it with administrator rights.
- Read and install any distribution-specific dependencies listed in the installation guide.
- Launch AmneziaVPN and add your Free, Premium or Self-hosted connection.
Do not disable IPv6 as a workaround. Amnezia’s Linux guidance says that disabling IPv6 can make the Connect button stop working. If the button does nothing, restore IPv6 and review the dependency notes before changing VPN protocols.
First connection: complete the route-specific setup
Amnezia Free
Free setup is regional. The official instructions say to disconnect from any other VPN first and open AmneziaVPN while you are in a region where Free is available.
- Open AmneziaVPN and choose Add connection.
- Select VPN by Amnezia.
- Wait for the available options to load.
- Choose the Amnezia Free entry for your region.
- Press Connect and approve the operating system’s VPN permission if it appears.
Free may connect only to the resources covered by its regional service. It is not evidence that every website, including YouTube in Russia, will be reachable.

Amnezia Premium: connect with a subscription key
Your Premium key is a complete string beginning with vpn://. It is available in the Personal Dashboard or the order email. Copy the entire value, including the prefix.
- Open AmneziaVPN and select Add connection.
- Choose the option for adding a subscription or connection key.
- Paste the full
vpn://key into the field. - Select Continue and wait while the locations and configuration load.
- Choose a location and press Connect.
If you purchased Premium inside the Android or iOS app, Amnezia’s documentation says the connection is added automatically. Open the app and look for the added location rather than pasting a second key.
Self-hosted VPN: use your own Linux server
Self-hosted setup is for a server you already control. The app does not supply the server, operating-system account or credentials.
- Prepare a reachable Linux server and its SSH credentials.
- In AmneziaVPN, select Add connection, then Self-hosted VPN.
- Enter the server IP address.
- Enter the SSH port if it is not the default port.
- Enter the SSH username.
- Authenticate with the server password or a private key, using the method configured on that server.
- Select the installation type and protocol offered by the app.
- Start the installation and wait for the app to finish configuring the server, then connect.
Keep the SSH details private. A self-hosted connection can fail because of firewall rules, an unreachable address, an incorrect port, an account without sufficient privileges or a key that the server does not accept; those are server-access problems rather than subscription-key problems.
Configure split tunneling, KillSwitch and startup

Split tunneling
Use split tunneling only when you have a clear routing need, such as keeping a local service outside the tunnel while sending other traffic through it. On Android you can choose apps as well as IP addresses and decide whether selected items use or bypass the VPN. Windows provides IP modes and an app-exception mode for bypassing selected apps; it does not provide the inverse mode that forces only selected apps through the VPN. iOS, macOS and Linux provide IP-based controls only.

Amnezia documents IP split tunneling as IPv4-only. It is unavailable for Amnezia Free, so the setting may not appear even when the operating system supports it.
KillSwitch
Windows, macOS and Linux expose KillSwitch settings in AmneziaVPN. Enable it when preventing accidental non-VPN traffic is more important than uninterrupted connectivity, and test the behavior before relying on it. Android has no app-level KillSwitch; use Android’s system settings for Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN. iOS has no built-in AmneziaVPN KillSwitch.
Autostart
Autostart is available in the Windows, macOS and Linux applications. The Android and iOS apps do not provide an AmneziaVPN autostart control, so a phone may require you to open the app or use the operating system’s own automation features.

Premium key fails or traffic does not move
- Update AmneziaVPN to the latest available release.
- Open the affected location’s settings.
- Choose Reload API config.
- Try another available location.
- If the problem remains, switch to another protocol offered for that location and reconnect.
A connected status does not by itself prove that traffic is passing. Check a normal webpage after each change.

Free will not connect or has no traffic
- Use Reload API config for the Free location.
- If that fails, delete the Free connection and create it again through VPN by Amnezia.
- Test from the network where you normally use the service.
If Free works on home internet but fails on mobile data, Amnezia identifies restricted mobile-network “whitelists” as a likely explanation. That restriction is outside the app and may require using another network.
Android disconnects in the background
Disable battery optimization for AmneziaVPN in Android’s battery or app settings. Aggressive background restrictions can stop the VPN process when the phone sleeps, even though the configuration is correct.
Linux Connect button does nothing
Confirm that IPv6 has not been disabled and that all distribution-specific dependencies from the installation guide are installed. Re-enable IPv6 before trying another protocol or reinstalling the app.
iOS app is missing from the store
App Store listings are regional. Verify the country or region in which the app is being sought and follow Amnezia’s current regional instructions. The correct alternative differs between Premium and Free, so do not substitute one procedure for the other.

- Use the official app store or Amnezia’s official release guidance, and choose the latest stable build rather than an old installer copied from elsewhere.
- If you installed Android by APK, schedule manual update checks because APK installs do not update automatically.
- Keep Premium keys, SSH passwords and private keys out of screenshots, public chats and unsecured notes.
- Record which route you configured. A
vpn://key belongs to Premium; it cannot configure a self-hosted server, and Free does not require either credential. - After a major app or operating-system update, verify the connection, split-tunneling rules and KillSwitch behavior again.
Platform requirements and regional availability reflected here come from Amnezia’s official documentation accessed October 13, 2026. Those details can change with new releases, so use the current platform guide when a requirement or menu label differs.
