How to Install and Change Wallpapers in Debian GNOME, KDE Plasma, and Xfce

To change a wallpaper in Debian, use the settings panel for the desktop you are running: Appearance in GNOME, the desktop configuration dialog in KDE Plasma, or Settings Manager → Desktop in Xfce. You normally do not need to install an extra application. Select an existing image, browse to a personal file, and apply it from that panel.

The word “install” can mean two different jobs. Choosing a picture for your own account is a per-user setting. Adding images for everyone, establishing a managed default, or integrating a distribution theme is an administrative task with different files and permissions. The instructions below keep those tasks separate and note where Debian releases and desktop versions can use different labels.

What “install a wallpaper” means in Debian

A wallpaper is simply an image file displayed behind desktop windows. For an individual user, the desktop environment stores a reference to the image and displays it; the file does not have to be copied into a special Debian directory. The quickest route is therefore the environment’s own wallpaper chooser or the image file’s context-menu action.

Administration is different. A shared image library, a default for newly created accounts, or a policy that users cannot override may involve system directories, a Debian theme package, or configuration databases. Those changes require an administrator account and should be planned for the specific Debian release and desktop version in use.

  • Personal choice: select a file in Appearance, desktop configuration, or Desktop Settings. This normally affects only your account.
  • Shared collection: place or link images in a directory that the desktop lists, such as Xfce’s documented backdrop directory. This changes what is available to users, not necessarily what every user sees.
  • Managed default: configure the desktop’s system settings, such as GNOME’s dconf keys, and optionally lock them so users cannot change them.

Quick comparison of the three Debian desktops

Desktop Where the setting lives Selecting a personal image Integrated downloads System-wide administration
GNOME Activities search → Appearance Choose a supplied image or Add Picture…; Files also offers Set as Background… The documented personal workflow uses the Appearance chooser; no download control is specified there GNOME documents dconf keys including picture-uri and picture-options, with dconf update and optional locking
KDE Plasma Desktop right-click menu → desktop configuration/settings Wallpaper area → Open…, then choose a positioning option Get New Wallpapers… can open Plasma’s KNewStuff catalog when available Use the Plasma configuration facilities appropriate to the deployed version; the personal dialog is not a system policy
Xfce Settings Manager → Desktop or desktop right-click → Desktop Settings… Background tab → single image, multiple-image option when offered, or a color scheme No equivalent download control is described in the Xfce workflow Copy or symlink images into /usr/share/xfce4/backdrops/ to add them to the list; administrative privileges are required

The exact controls can move between releases, translations, and distributions. Xubuntu documentation is the source for the Xfce directory example, while Debian may ship different package defaults. Treat the labels above as the common route, not a promise that every installation has an identical dialog.

GNOME: change a wallpaper from Appearance

Set a personal wallpaper

  1. Open Activities and search for Appearance.
  2. Open Appearance and look at the available background images.
  3. Click one of the supplied images to use it, or choose Add Picture… to open a file chooser.
  4. Select your image and confirm the choice in the chooser. GNOME applies the change immediately; there is no separate Save button in the normal workflow.
  5. Return to the desktop to verify the result. If you are on a workspace covered by windows, switch to an empty workspace so the full background is visible.

GNOME’s official user help describes the task simply: “You can choose an image or wallpaper as your desktop background.” The panel wording may differ slightly by GNOME version or translation, but the Appearance screen and the Add Picture action are the documented concepts.

Use the image-file shortcut

If the picture is already on disk, open Files, right-click the image, and choose Set as Background…. This bypasses the Appearance gallery and sets that file directly. You can also open the image in Image Viewer and use its titlebar menu to set it as the background. These shortcuts are useful for a downloaded photograph or a file in your Pictures folder.

Understand GNOME’s scope

The GNOME chooser changes the wallpaper for your user session. It does not automatically change the lock screen or login screen, which can have separate settings and policies. It also does not place the image into a shared system gallery. Keep the original file at a stable location; moving or deleting it can leave the desktop unable to load the selected picture until you choose another one.

Set a managed GNOME default with dconf

Administrators who maintain shared GNOME computers can define a default background through the GNOME system administrator configuration. The relevant settings include the picture-uri key, which identifies the image, and picture-options, which controls how it is displayed. The administrator guide’s example uses a local file URI.

  1. Place the image in a stable location that every intended user can read. Avoid a path inside one person’s home directory if the setting is meant for all accounts.
  2. Create or edit the GNOME dconf profile and database entries for the deployed GNOME version, setting picture-uri and, if needed, picture-options.
  3. Run dconf update so the profile changes are compiled for sessions to read.
  4. Log in with a test account and verify that the URI resolves and that the selected display option looks correct.
  5. If users must not override the policy, lock the relevant keys in the dconf profile. Locking is optional; without it, the profile can provide a default while still allowing user changes.

dconf profiles are version- and deployment-sensitive. Test the file URI, permissions, and key names against the GNOME release installed on the Debian machines before applying a policy broadly.

KDE Plasma: configure the desktop and use Get New Wallpapers

Choose an image from the desktop dialog

  1. Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
  2. Open the desktop configuration or settings dialog from the context menu.
  3. Go to the Wallpaper area. In the standard image workflow, set Wallpaper Type to Image if the dialog presents a type selector.
  4. Use Open… to browse to a personal image, or select one already listed.
  5. Choose the positioning or fit option that suits the display. The KDE Handbook illustration shows Positioning: Scaled; other Plasma versions can expose additional choices.
  6. Apply or close the dialog according to the buttons shown by your Plasma version, then check the desktop.

The same dialog can include a background-color control. That color is useful when the image does not cover the entire screen or when a layout leaves bands around the picture. Do not assume that every Plasma release presents the controls in the same order: the desktop configuration dialog has changed visually across versions.

Download wallpapers through Plasma

When available, select Get New Wallpapers… in the wallpaper configuration dialog. Plasma uses its KNewStuff integration to browse downloadable wallpaper entries and make them available to the desktop. Availability depends on the Plasma installation and the online catalog at the time you use it. If the button is absent, use Open… with a local image instead; the personal wallpaper workflow does not require the catalog.

Keep the Plasma setting in perspective

The desktop dialog sets the wallpaper for the current user and desktop activity or screen context exposed by your Plasma version. It is not the same as configuring a login-screen theme or a lock-screen image. Those screens have their own system settings, so changing the desktop picture should not be expected to change them.

Xfce: use Desktop Settings and the Background tab

Select a personal image

  1. Open Settings Manager → Desktop. Alternatively, right-click an empty area of the desktop and choose Desktop Settings….
  2. Open the Background tab.
  3. Choose a single image from the list or browse to the directory containing your file, using the controls provided by your Xfce release.
  4. If your version offers a multiple-image option, select it when you want a rotating or multi-picture arrangement. If that option is not present, use the single-image mode.
  5. Select a color scheme when you want a plain color instead of a picture.
  6. Close the dialog after the preview reflects the choice. Xfce applies the setting from the Desktop panel.

The Xubuntu guide documents these image and color choices, but Xubuntu’s documentation can be older than the Xfce packages in a current Debian release. A missing option or a differently named button usually reflects a version difference rather than a broken wallpaper feature.

Add images to Xfce’s shared list

For a shared collection, Xubuntu documents copying or symlinking image files into /usr/share/xfce4/backdrops/. Because that is a system directory, an administrator must perform the operation. After adding files, reopen Desktop Settings or refresh the list so the new entries appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this directory only when you deliberately want a system-level collection. For one user’s photograph, selecting the original file in Desktop Settings is simpler and avoids changing files under /usr/share. Make sure every account that should see the collection has read permission for both the directory and the image files.

Debian’s default themes and the desktop-base package

Debian’s desktop-base package supplies distribution theme assets, but those assets are not the same thing as a wallpaper selected by an individual user. Its package README describes environment-specific integrations: a GNOME background XML alternative, a Plasma wallpaper alternative, and a general desktop-background asset for Xfce and MATE.

This matters when an administrator is trying to restore a Debian-branded default or build an image for many machines. The package can provide the assets and integration expected by a particular desktop, while the user-facing chooser still controls the current account. Do not assume that one package command or one file path applies identically to GNOME, Plasma, and Xfce, and check the Debian release’s package contents before scripting a deployment.

Wallpaper, lock screen, and login screen are separate

A desktop wallpaper is drawn after you sign in. The lock screen shown when a session is locked and the display manager’s login screen can use separate images, themes, or policies. GNOME’s Appearance panel, Plasma’s desktop configuration dialog, and Xfce’s Desktop Settings workflow address the desktop background; they should not be presented as universal controls for those other screens.

If a new picture appears on the desktop but not at login, check the login manager or lock-screen settings for the desktop and display manager installed on that Debian system. Changing a desktop wallpaper alone is not evidence that those screens share the same file or policy.

Choose positioning without assuming a universal image size

The supplied documentation does not establish one recommended image format or resolution for all three environments. Instead, use the positioning or fit controls exposed by your desktop. Plasma’s handbook example labels one option Scaled; GNOME and Xfce can present their own fit, crop, or tiling choices depending on version.

  • Use a scaled or fit-style option when you want the whole image visible, accepting that the desktop may add space around it.
  • Use a crop or fill-style option when covering the entire screen matters more than showing every edge of the picture.
  • Use a centered or tiled choice only when that arrangement matches the image’s design.
  • On a multi-monitor setup, inspect each screen after applying the setting. The dialog’s per-screen or combined controls vary by desktop release.

Rather than converting every image to a fixed resolution, preview the result and adjust the positioning control. This avoids making an unsupported claim that one size works for every monitor, scaling factor, or desktop environment.

Troubleshooting common wallpaper problems

The settings panel is not where the instructions say

Confirm which desktop session is running. GNOME uses Activities and Appearance; Plasma exposes configuration from the desktop context menu; Xfce uses Settings Manager → Desktop or Desktop Settings…. A Debian installation can contain more than one desktop, and the panel you opened may belong to a different session than the one currently displaying the desktop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The image does not appear in the list

Use the chooser’s browse or Open… action and select the file directly. In Xfce, a shared-list image must be in a directory the desktop scans, such as /usr/share/xfce4/backdrops/, and the account needs read access. Reopen the settings panel after copying or linking a file so the list is rebuilt.

The wallpaper changed, then disappeared

Check whether the original file was moved, renamed, deleted, or stored on a location that is not mounted at login. GNOME’s direct file action and the other desktop choosers still depend on the selected image being readable. Choose a replacement from a stable local path and verify file permissions.

The picture is stretched, cropped, or surrounded by bands

Return to the positioning or fit controls and try another option. A scaled image can preserve the complete picture while leaving unused space; a fill or crop choice can cover the screen while cutting off edges. The correct choice depends on the picture and display shape, not on a universal Debian setting.

Get New Wallpapers is missing or empty

That control is a Plasma feature supplied through KNewStuff and may not be installed, enabled, or available in every Plasma package set. Use a local file with Open… when the catalog is unavailable. GNOME and Xfce instructions in this guide do not depend on a comparable online download panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Users can still change a supposed default

A default is not automatically a lock. For GNOME, an administrator can lock the relevant dconf keys after setting them and running dconf update. If the requirement is only to provide a starting image, leave the keys unlocked. For Plasma or Xfce, use the policy and configuration mechanisms appropriate to the exact deployment rather than copying GNOME’s dconf method.

A reliable workflow for personal and managed machines

  1. Identify the active desktop session before opening a settings panel.
  2. For one account, use the desktop’s chooser or the image-file shortcut; do not modify system directories unnecessarily.
  3. Keep the selected file in a stable, readable location and test the result after logging out and back in.
  4. For a shared gallery, use the desktop’s documented directory or package mechanism and grant read access to the intended users.
  5. For a mandatory default, follow the desktop’s administration documentation, apply the change to a test account, and decide explicitly whether users may override it.
  6. Configure lock-screen and login-screen images separately if those screens must match the desktop wallpaper.

The Bottom Line

Use Appearance in GNOME, desktop configuration in KDE Plasma, or Desktop Settings in Xfce for a personal wallpaper. Treat shared image collections, Debian theme defaults, and locked policies as separate administrative projects.
