How to Install and Align a Starlink Dish for the Best Connection

The best Starlink connection starts with the clearest possible view of the sky, not with a particular compass direction or a taller pole. Before drilling or permanently fixing anything, use the Starlink app’s Check for Obstructions tool at the exact height and position you are considering. Then follow the alignment procedure for your dish generation, confirm that the app reports a usable alignment, and only afterward make the installation permanent.

Standard and Mini dishes are aligned through the app. Standard Actuated and Performance Gen 1 dishes level themselves automatically and should not be manually adjusted. Once the dish is online, allow the live obstruction map to finish so you can judge the installation using actual satellite connections rather than a phone-based estimate.

What determines a good Starlink installation?

Starlink satellites move across the sky, so a dish needs an unobstructed field of view rather than a single clear point. Tree branches, roofs, poles and nearby structures can interrupt the connection as satellites pass behind them. A location that looks open from the ground can still be blocked at the dish’s final height, which is why the pre-installation scan must be performed where the dish will actually sit.

There are two different obstruction checks. The app’s pre-installation scan uses your phone to estimate the sky view from a proposed position. After the dish is online, Starlink builds a second map from real satellite connections; Starlink says that map can take up to 12 hours to complete. The two checks answer different questions: the first helps you choose a site, while the second shows what the installed dish is actually experiencing. See Starlink’s obstruction guidance for the current app workflow.

Prepare before you put the dish on a mount

Identify the exact kit and generation

Find the model name and generation in your order information, packaging or Starlink app. Do not assume that a procedure for one dish applies to another. In particular, Standard and Mini use the app’s alignment tool, while Standard Actuated and Performance Gen 1 automatically level themselves to search for satellites. Starlink’s setup instructions describe these model-specific behaviors.

Decide whether you are testing or installing permanently

A temporary test lets you compare locations and verify alignment before you drill or route cable through a wall. A fixed installation needs a mount that matches the dish generation and the surface, a cable route that can be protected, and enough space for the dish to orient without touching a roof or another structure. Starlink’s fixed-install guidance and the Standard Wall Mount Install Guide should be checked for the hardware you actually own.

Make safety part of the decision

Roof edges, ladders, drilling and tree work can turn a simple installation into a hazardous one. Starlink advises stopping and seeking professional assistance if you cannot safely install the kit or clear an obstruction. Do not treat a risky roof or pole job as a required do-it-yourself step.

How to check for obstructions before installing Starlink

Run the scan at every realistic candidate site, not just the first place where the dish can stand. The result is only useful when the phone represents the dish’s eventual position.

  1. Open the Starlink app and start the Check for Obstructions experience.
  2. Stand at the proposed dish position. Hold the phone at the planned dish height and orientation, rather than at chest height if the dish will be on a roof, wall or pole.
  3. If the app asks which hardware you have, select the matching Starlink model. The scan should correspond to the dish you will install.
  4. Move to each candidate location and repeat the scan. Compare the clear portions of the sky, especially where branches, rooflines, poles or other objects enter the view.
  5. Record which location and height produced the clearest result before choosing a mount or drilling.
  6. Use the result as a site-selection estimate, then verify the finished installation with the live obstruction map after the dish connects.

The official scan instructions are available in Starlink’s Check for Obstructions support article. A clear scan at ground level does not prove that a different roof or pole position will be clear, and a higher position is useful only when it actually clears the object blocking the sky.

Choose a location and mounting approach

There is no universally best mount. The right choice is the site that gives the dish a clear view, fits the exact hardware and surface, leaves room for orientation, provides a sensible cable route and can be installed safely. Starlink identifies roof, pole and wall placement as possible elevated solutions when a clear ground-level view is unavailable.

Location or approach When it makes sense Checks before committing
Ground-level or temporary position Useful for comparing sites and testing the kit before permanent work. Run the scan at the dish’s intended height; ensure the temporary position is stable and the dish has room to orient.
Roof mount Useful when the roof provides a wider, clearer sky view than the ground. Confirm the roof surface and mount are compatible, keep safe access, leave orientation clearance and plan a protected cable route.
Pole mount Useful when a pole can raise the dish above nearby branches or structures. Verify that the extra height actually clears the obstruction, that the pole and mount suit the dish generation, and that the installation can be performed safely.
Wall mount Useful when a suitable wall has a clear view and can support the chosen bracket. Check the wall material, bracket compatibility, dish clearance from eaves and corners, and the route into the building.

Elevation is not a benefit by itself. Raising a dish without clearing the blocking tree, roof or pole can leave the interruption problem unchanged. Starlink’s location guidance recommends considering a roof, pole or wall when the ground-level view is unavailable.

Connect the kit without generalizing across models

Cables, connectors and router layouts vary between Starlink kits, so use the installation guide for your model. For the Standard kit, Starlink’s official sequence is to insert the dish cable fully, route it to the router port marked for the antenna, and connect the router to power. Follow the illustrated procedure in the Standard Install Guide rather than forcing a connector or applying the sequence to a different product.

Before powering up, check that the cable follows the planned route without sharp bends, crushing or a point where water can enter. If a permanent installation requires drilling or an exterior cable entry, choose weatherproofing and protection appropriate to the wall, roof and cable path. The evidence does not establish one universal cable-entry kit; the surface and route determine what is suitable.

Align the dish according to its hardware

Standard and Mini

For Standard and Mini dishes, open the Starlink app’s alignment tool and follow its on-screen direction. Rotate the dish only as the app requests, then wait for the alignment warning to clear. The app’s current labels and prompts can change, so use the procedure in Starlink’s setup guidance for the exact model shown in your account.

Standard Actuated and Performance Gen 1

Starlink says these dishes automatically level themselves while searching for satellites. Do not try to set their angle by hand or force the mechanism into a position. Give the dish clear space to move and let its automatic process complete.

Use the app before fixing the mount

A fixed-install alert can prompt you to rotate a dish with the alignment tool. Confirm that the app no longer reports an alignment issue and that the obstruction status is acceptable before tightening a permanent mount. A bracket that leaves the dish pressed against a roof, wall or other object can prevent the orientation the dish needs, even when the site scan looked clear. Starlink’s fixed-install instructions cover this verification step.

Test first, then make the installation permanent

  1. Place or attach the dish provisionally at the location that produced the best pre-installation scan.
  2. Connect the kit using the instructions for that model and wait for it to come online.
  3. For Standard or Mini, complete the app alignment process. For Standard Actuated or Performance Gen 1, leave the automatic leveling mechanism alone.
  4. Check that the dish has physical clearance to orient and that the app is not requesting a rotation or reporting an alignment problem.
  5. Review the live obstruction status after service begins. Do not treat the first phone scan as the final verdict.
  6. Only after those checks pass, secure the roof, pole or wall mount, finish the cable route and protect the entry point as required by the installation surface.

This order prevents a common failure: drilling a permanent mount and discovering that the dish cannot orient or that a nearby object blocks part of its working sky.

Read the live obstruction map after the dish connects

The post-installation map is based on actual satellite connections and may take up to 12 hours to complete. During that period, avoid making a permanent judgment from an incomplete map. Once it has finished, look for obstruction indications and any interruption warnings in the app.

If the live result shows a meaningful blockage, Starlink’s troubleshooting advice is to relocate the dish, clear the obstruction where that is safe and permitted, or raise the dish with a mount. Relocation is often better than simply adding height if the new position provides a wider clear sky view. Read the obstruction troubleshooting guidance before cutting branches, altering a structure or attempting elevated work.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The app reports an alignment problem

  • Confirm the dish model in the app and use the matching alignment behavior.
  • If it is a Standard or Mini, reopen the alignment tool and rotate only as directed.
  • If it is a Standard Actuated or Performance Gen 1, stop trying to adjust it manually; allow the dish to level itself.
  • Check that the mount leaves enough clearance for the dish to orient and that the mount is not forcing it against a nearby surface.
  • Do not permanently tighten the installation until the alert clears.

The connection is interrupted by obstructions

  • Wait for the live obstruction map to finish so you are acting on the completed result.
  • Identify the object in the dish’s field of view rather than assuming that the dish simply needs a different angle.
  • Relocate the dish, remove the obstruction only when safe and permitted, or raise it enough to clear the object.
  • Run the app scan again at the proposed new position before moving a permanent mount.

The dish does not appear to come online

  • Recheck that the dish cable is fully seated and follows the kit’s connection diagram.
  • For the Standard kit, verify that the cable reaches the router port marked for the antenna and that the router is connected to power.
  • For another model, use its own guide instead of assuming the Standard cable or router arrangement.
  • If the installation requires unsafe access to inspect a connector or mount, stop and obtain professional help.

A higher mount did not improve service

Height alone does not remove an obstruction. Use the scan and the live map to determine whether the raised position actually opens the blocked part of the sky. If the same tree, roofline or pole remains in the dish’s view, choose a different position rather than adding more height automatically.

Compare candidate installations before choosing one

When two sites seem viable, score both against the same criteria instead of choosing by appearance. The following framework reflects the factors that affect a reliable installation.

Criterion Question to answer What a strong candidate looks like
Sky view Does the app scan show a clear view at the actual dish position and height? Few or no objects intrude into the field of view, with the result repeated at the intended height.
Hardware fit Does the mount match this dish generation and the installation surface? The bracket is intended for the model and can be attached securely to the roof, pole or wall.
Orientation clearance Can the dish move or orient without contacting a roof, wall, eave or pole? There is open space around the dish’s required movement and no structure forces its angle.
Cable route Can the cable reach the router without damage or an unprotected entry? The route is short enough for the kit, protected from crushing and weather, and serviceable later.
Safety Can the installation and future maintenance be done safely? You can complete the work without unsafe roof, ladder, tree-clearing or pole activity; otherwise use a professional.

Common mistakes that reduce reliability

  • Scanning from the wrong height: A phone held at ground level does not represent a dish mounted above a roofline or tree.
  • Using a universal alignment rule: The correct process depends on whether the dish is Standard, Mini, Standard Actuated or Performance Gen 1.
  • Making the mount permanent too soon: Alignment alerts, clearance problems and obstruction issues are easier to fix before drilling or sealing cable entries.
  • Assuming every elevated location is better: A roof, wall or pole helps only when it clears the obstruction and still gives the dish room to orient.
  • Confusing the two obstruction checks: The phone scan is a planning estimate; the live map is based on the dish’s actual satellite connections.
  • Forcing an automatic dish: Standard Actuated and Performance Gen 1 models should self-level rather than being manually tilted.
  • Ignoring safe-access limits: If the work cannot be done safely, professional installation is the correct recovery step.

Final installation checklist

  1. Record the exact Starlink model and generation.
  2. Decide whether you are testing a location or installing permanently.
  3. Run Check for Obstructions at the planned dish position and height at every candidate site.
  4. Select a roof, pole, wall or ground position that provides a clear view and safe access.
  5. Verify mount compatibility, orientation clearance and a protected cable route.
  6. Connect the dish, router and power using the guide for that kit.
  7. Use the app alignment tool for Standard and Mini; do not manually adjust Standard Actuated or Performance Gen 1.
  8. Resolve alignment alerts before tightening a permanent mount.
  9. Let the live obstruction map complete and act on any confirmed blockage.
  10. If clearing or reaching the installation is unsafe, stop and hire a qualified professional.

The practical definition of the best Starlink installation is therefore specific: the model is mounted securely in a place that the app scan shows as clear, the dish can orient without interference, the model-specific alignment process succeeds, and the completed live map does not show a blockage that causes interruptions.
