How to Install an Open-Source Android Launcher and Make It Your Default

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the launcher from its official distribution channel, open it once, then choose it in Android’s Default apps or Home app setting. Keep your existing launcher installed until the replacement survives a restart and passes your widget, gesture, and app-drawer checks; you can switch back from the same selector at any time.

This guide covers the search-first KISS launcher and the Pixel-style, highly configurable Lawnchair launcher. Android manufacturers use different names and locations for the home-app control, so the reliable method is to search Settings for Default apps, Home app, or Launcher rather than follow one supposedly universal menu path.

What an Android launcher does

A launcher is the application Android displays when you press the Home button. KISS documentation describes it as “the application that appears on Android when you press the ‘Home’ button.” It supplies the home screen, app list or app drawer, search behavior, icons, widgets, and sometimes gestures and shortcuts. Changing launchers changes that presentation layer; it does not erase your installed apps, photos, accounts, or system settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The launcher normally becomes visible immediately after installation, but installation and default selection are separate actions. You can install several launchers and leave one selected as the default. Android then opens the selected app whenever you return Home, while the others remain available for testing or rollback.

KISS: a search-first, minimal workflow

KISS is designed around typing rather than arranging a conventional grid. Its search interface can find apps and contacts, and its lightweight workflow uses tags and favorites to keep frequent destinations close. The project describes KISS as a fast, small, open-source Android launcher.

The current KISS package listing on F-Droid requires Android 5.0 or newer. F-Droid added version 3.26.0 on July 3, 2026. Treat those as listing facts for that package and date, not as a promise that every later build has identical requirements. The same F-Droid description says the application is 250 KB and reports that “93% of users that try KISS for a week are still active users after 3 years.” Those figures are claims displayed by the listing, not independent measurements.

Lawnchair: a familiar home screen with Pixel-style controls

Lawnchair is an open-source home app based on Launcher3. Its project materials emphasize a Pixel-like experience with controls for Material theming, widgets, icon packs, fonts, and colors. Choose it if you want a conventional home screen and app drawer but more control over appearance and layout than your stock launcher provides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lawnchair distributes project and release information through its official repository and release channels. Use that project guidance to identify an official build; do not assume that an old mirror, repackaged download, or an unofficial store entry is equivalent.

Quick comparison

Decision point KISS Lawnchair
Primary interaction Type to find apps and contacts; organize with tags and favorites. Conventional home screen and app drawer with Pixel-style customization.
Open-source distribution Officially available through F-Droid and Google Play. The F-Droid build is signed by F-Droid and corresponds to the source tarball, according to its listing. Use the official project repository and its release guidance; the exact channel depends on the project’s published build information.
Minimum Android version Android 5.0 or newer for the KISS package listed by F-Droid in 2026. Not stated by the project information used here; check the requirement attached to the specific official release.
Customization emphasis Lightweight search, tags, and favorites. Material theming, widgets, icon packs, fonts, colors, and launcher layout controls.
Permissions to review F-Droid lists package-query access and optional accessibility use for double-tap-to-lock, among other permissions. Review the permission list shown for the exact official build before enabling optional features.
Best first test Search for several apps and a contact, then test favorites and tags. Place a widget, change a visual setting, and test the app drawer and gestures you intend to use.

Before you install: compatibility, source, and rollback checks

Confirm Android compatibility

Check your Android version in the phone’s About section, then compare it with the requirement shown by the exact package you plan to install. KISS’s F-Droid package requires Android 5.0 or newer. A different build can have different requirements, so do not transfer that number to Lawnchair or to an unofficial KISS package.

Use an official distribution route

For KISS, the two documented routes are the F-Droid client and Google Play. The F-Droid listing recommends using the client; it also states that the client’s build is signed by F-Droid and corresponds to the source tarball. Installing through the client gives you its normal update and signature checks instead of asking you to trust a random download site.

For Lawnchair, start with the project’s official repository and release instructions. Confirm the project name, release notes, and package identity before installing. Avoid a download that has been re-uploaded by an unknown party, especially when it offers an older build with no provenance.

Keep the current launcher available

Do not uninstall or disable the stock launcher before the new one is selected and tested. Lawnchair’s FAQ states, “Android doesn’t allow you to uninstall your default launcher.” In practice, retaining the old launcher gives you a recovery path if the new app crashes, loses a widget, or has a setting you dislike. Storage saved by removing the old app is not worth losing an easy fallback during setup.

Review permissions before accepting them

Read the permission list on the store or repository page and distinguish core operation from optional features. The F-Droid KISS page lists package queries and optional accessibility use for its double-tap-to-lock feature. Package queries can help a launcher discover installed applications; accessibility access is more sensitive and should be enabled only when you deliberately want the associated function. If a permission is not needed for the way you plan to use the launcher, leave the optional feature off and revisit it later.

Install KISS from F-Droid or Google Play

Route A: F-Droid client

  1. Install or open the official F-Droid client on your phone.
  2. Use the client’s search field to find KISS. Check that the listing identifies the open-source project and shows the expected package information.
  3. Read the displayed Android requirement and permission list. The KISS listing used for this guide specifies Android 5.0 or newer.
  4. Tap Install and approve the Android package prompt if one appears. Let the client finish before opening the launcher.
  5. Open KISS from the completion screen or your app list. Complete its first-run choices, such as favorites or tags, without removing your existing launcher.

The F-Droid listing says its build is signed by F-Droid and corresponds to the source tarball. That is a provenance statement about the listed build, not a reason to download a similarly named APK from an unrelated mirror.

Route B: Google Play

  1. Open Google Play and search for the official KISS listing.
  2. Verify the developer and project identity, then read the current version, Android requirement, and permissions shown for your device.
  3. Tap Install. When installation finishes, tap Open once so the launcher can initialize.
  4. Use the first-run screen to set favorites, tags, or other preferences. Leave the existing launcher installed while you test.

Store listings can change independently of one another. If the version or requirement differs between Google Play and F-Droid, record which channel you used so future updates come from the same trusted source unless you intentionally migrate.

Install Lawnchair from its official project channel

  1. Open Lawnchair’s official project repository or the release channel linked by that project.
  2. Read the release information for the build intended for your Android version and device. Confirm that the download is an official project artifact rather than a third-party mirror.
  3. Download or install using the method documented by the project. Android may show a package-install confirmation or a security prompt when the route is outside Google Play; proceed only when the source and package identity match the official release guidance.
  4. Launch Lawnchair once. Work through its initial setup, choosing a layout and any visual options you actually want.
  5. Test a widget, app-drawer search, and one or two appearance controls before assigning it as the default. Keep your previous launcher in place during this test.

Lawnchair’s documented feature set includes Material theming, widgets, icon packs, fonts, and color settings. Those options can affect how your home screen looks without changing the underlying Android applications.

Set the new launcher as Android’s default Home app

Android and manufacturer skins do not expose one identical menu. Google’s Android Help warns that “Some of these steps may vary based on your device.” Use the following process as a label-based method, not as a promise of one exact tap sequence.

Method 1: Settings search

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap the Settings search field and enter Default apps, Home app, or Launcher.
  3. Open the result that controls the default home application. It may be titled Default apps, Choose default apps, Home app, or a similar phrase.
  4. Tap the currently selected home app to open the list of installed launchers.
  5. Select KISS or Lawnchair. Read any confirmation prompt and approve the change.
  6. Press the Home button. The selected launcher should appear instead of the previous one.

Method 2: Home-button chooser

  1. After installing and opening the new launcher, press the Home button.
  2. If Android displays a chooser, select the new launcher.
  3. Choose Always when you want that app to become the default. Choosing Just once, where offered, lets you test it without changing the permanent assignment.
  4. Press Home again to confirm that the chooser no longer appears and the intended launcher opens.

If neither method is obvious, return to Settings search and try each of the three terms. Manufacturer software can place the selector under Apps, Installed apps, or another device-specific heading while keeping the same purpose.

Finish first-run setup without granting more access than necessary

Configure only the features you intend to use

Start with the simplest configuration: home-screen layout, app access, and any favorites or tags you need. Add widgets, icon packs, fonts, gesture actions, or theme changes one at a time. This makes it easier to identify which option causes a problem and avoids granting an optional permission before you know why you want it.

Understand accessibility requests

Some launchers use accessibility access for an action such as double-tap-to-lock. KISS’s F-Droid permission information identifies that use as optional. Enable it only after reading Android’s description and deciding that the convenience is worth the additional access. If you later stop using the gesture, turn the permission off in Android’s Accessibility settings.

Check app discovery and contacts deliberately

KISS’s central workflow is search. Type the names of several installed apps and, if you want contact search, test a contact you are comfortable using for setup. If an item does not appear, inspect the launcher’s tags, favorites, or permission settings before assuming the installation failed.

Verify that the switch really worked

Do these checks before uninstalling anything or changing many settings:

  • Home button: press Home repeatedly from different apps and confirm the expected launcher opens every time.
  • App access: open the app drawer or search and launch several applications.
  • Widgets: add a non-critical widget, resize it if supported, and verify that it refreshes.
  • Gestures: test only the gestures you plan to use, including any optional lock gesture.
  • Rotation and restart: if your device uses rotation, check the home screen in the orientations you use; then restart the phone and press Home again.
  • Notifications and shortcuts: open a notification, use an app shortcut if available, and confirm that returning Home still reaches the new launcher.
  • Battery behavior: use the phone normally for a while and watch for crashes or repeated reloads before making the new launcher your only practical home option.

These are operational checks, not a claim of an independent performance test. Their purpose is to catch a bad installation, an incompatible feature, or an unexpected permission requirement while the original launcher remains available.

How to switch back or recover from a problem

Choose the original launcher again

  1. Open Settings and search for Default apps, Home app, or Launcher.
  2. Open the home-app selector.
  3. Select the original stock launcher or another installed launcher.
  4. Press Home to verify that Android now opens the selected fallback.

This is the same control used to make the open-source launcher default. Lawnchair documents that Android will not let you uninstall the default launcher until another launcher is selected, which is why retaining the original app prevents a needless dead end.

If the chooser keeps appearing

A repeated chooser usually means the assignment was not saved, the one-time option was selected, or the device reset the default after an update. Return to the home-app selector, choose the launcher again, and select Always if that option is present. Restart and test Home once more.

If the new launcher crashes or shows a blank screen

  • Use the Home-app selector to return to the original launcher.
  • Open the failing launcher’s app settings and review its permissions and battery restrictions.
  • Reopen the launcher and disable the most recent optional feature, widget, gesture, icon pack, or accessibility action.
  • Install an official update only through the same trusted channel you used originally.
  • If the problem persists, keep the original launcher as default and consult the project’s release information for device- or version-specific issues.

If widgets or gestures do not behave as expected

First verify that the feature works on the launcher’s own home screen and that the required permission is enabled. Re-add one widget rather than migrating a large layout all at once. For a gesture tied to accessibility, confirm that Android still lists the launcher as an enabled accessibility service. If the feature is optional, disabling it is a valid workaround; a launcher can remain the default without every extra feature enabled.

If you decide to uninstall the replacement

  1. Set the original launcher as the default first.
  2. Press Home and confirm the original appears after a restart.
  3. Only then uninstall the replacement from Android’s Apps settings or the store client.

Do not reverse those steps. Removing the selected default first can leave you without the intended home app and can force Android to display a setup or chooser screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing between KISS and Lawnchair in practice

Choose KISS when speed of access matters more than visual layout

KISS suits a phone where you would rather type an app or contact name than maintain pages of icons. Its tags and favorites provide lightweight organization, and its small package can be attractive when you want a deliberately minimal interface. Before committing, confirm that search is comfortable for your daily routine and that the F-Droid package’s Android 5.0-or-newer requirement matches your device.

Choose Lawnchair when you want a conventional, tunable home screen

Lawnchair is the better fit when you expect a familiar grid, widgets, an app drawer, and Pixel-like visual controls. Its documented customization areas include Material theming, icon packs, fonts, and colors. Because builds are supplied through project release guidance, check the exact release requirements and provenance before installing.

Try both without sacrificing the fallback

Android allows multiple launchers to remain installed. Install one, make it default, and complete the verification checklist. If the interaction model does not suit you, switch back to the original launcher or install the other open-source option and repeat the test. Keep only the launcher you actually use after the choice is stable.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Following a universal menu path: labels differ by Android version and manufacturer. Search Settings instead.
  • Installing an unofficial mirror: use F-Droid or Google Play for KISS, and Lawnchair’s official project release guidance for Lawnchair.
  • Removing the stock launcher first: select and verify a replacement before uninstalling anything.
  • Accepting every permission automatically: enable optional capabilities only when their purpose is clear.
  • Assuming one package’s requirements apply to all builds: KISS’s Android 5.0 minimum belongs to the F-Droid package listing; check the requirement for the specific release you install.
  • Changing many settings before testing: add features incrementally so a problem has an identifiable cause.
  • Skipping the restart check: a launcher that works once but fails after reboot is not ready to replace your fallback.

A safe, repeatable installation checklist

  1. Identify whether you want KISS’s search-first workflow or Lawnchair’s conventional Pixel-style customization.
  2. Confirm the Android requirement for the exact official package.
  3. Install KISS through F-Droid or Google Play, or obtain Lawnchair through its official project channel.
  4. Read permissions and enable only the features you intend to use.
  5. Open the launcher once and complete basic setup.
  6. Leave the current launcher installed.
  7. Use Settings search for Default apps, Home app, or Launcher, then select the new launcher.
  8. Press Home, test app access, widgets, gestures, and a restart.
  9. Keep the old launcher until the replacement is stable.
  10. If needed, return to the same selector and choose the original launcher before uninstalling the replacement.
