Short answer: install a PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD (Key M) that is 250 GB to 8 TB, fits Sony’s supported lengths, and remains within the 25 mm width and 11.25 mm total thickness limits after its heatsink is attached. Sony recommends at least 5,500 MB/s sequential read speed and requires effective heat dissipation. After updating the PS5, power it down, fit the drive in the expansion bay, secure it, replace the covers, and format it when the console starts. You can then download, update, and play PS5 games directly from the M.2 drive.
Why add an M.2 SSD before new PS5 exclusives arrive?
PS5 games are large, and installing several at once can consume the console’s internal storage quickly. An internal M.2 expansion drive gives you a second high-speed location for PS5 and PS4 games. Unlike USB extended storage, it does not require you to copy a PS5 game back to the internal drive before playing it.

The storage benefit is straightforward: you can keep more large games installed and launch them from the expansion drive. Sony’s documentation does not establish that a particular future exclusive requires an M.2 SSD, nor does it promise identical performance for every title. Treat the expansion as extra capacity and a convenient play location, not as a guarantee that a named upcoming game will run differently from the internal SSD.

PS5 M.2 SSD compatibility requirements
Check the complete drive-and-heatsink assembly, not only the bare drive’s specification. A drive marketed as “PS5 compatible” is only a starting claim; the finished assembly must meet Sony’s interface, size, capacity, speed and cooling requirements.

| Requirement | Sony guidance | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Interface | PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe, Key M | The product must be NVMe over PCIe Gen4x4. M.2 SATA drives are not supported. |
| Capacity | 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum | Choose a capacity within that range. Formatting uses the entire drive. |
| Supported lengths | 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110 mm | These correspond to 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 form factors. |
| Sequential read speed | 5,500 MB/s or faster recommended | Use the manufacturer’s sequential-read figure for the exact model, not a lower “up to” figure from another capacity. |
| Maximum assembled width | 25 mm | Measure the SSD and heatsink together, including any side overhang. |
| Maximum assembled thickness | 11.25 mm total, including cooling | Check the complete height above and below the circuit board. Sony also specifies separate above-board and below-board clearances. |
| Cooling | A heat-dissipation mechanism is required | Buy an integrated heatsink or a correctly sized heatsink and heat-transfer sheet. |
Sony’s PlayStation Support guidance states: “Do not use an M.2 SSD without a heat-dissipation mechanism, such as a heat sink or heat transfer sheet.” That warning applies even when the drive itself meets the interface and speed requirements.
Choosing the drive and heatsink
Pick the capacity for your installation habits
The supported range gives you room to match the drive to how often you install and remove games. A smaller drive suits a library that is rotated regularly; a larger one reduces the need to archive games as new releases arrive. The following is a planning guide rather than a claim about how many games fit, because installation sizes vary by title and can change with patches.
| Capacity | Useful when you… | Planning caution |
|---|---|---|
| 250 GB–1 TB | Keep a focused group of current games and move finished titles to another location. | Large installs and updates can consume the available space quickly. |
| 2 TB | Want a general-purpose expansion for several large PS5 games. | Leave room for patches and downloadable content instead of filling the drive completely. |
| 4 TB | Keep a broad active library installed and dislike repeated downloads. | Confirm that the exact model and its heatsink remain within the console’s physical limits. |
| 8 TB | Need the largest capacity Sony lists for a long-term library. | Check the current model’s dimensions, firmware support and warranty carefully; capacity alone does not establish compatibility. |
Use the assembled dimensions
An SSD’s label usually describes the bare circuit board. A heatsink, thermal pad, retaining hardware or a decorative shroud can make the finished part wider or taller. Ask for a dimension drawing or specification for the complete assembly. If the listing gives only the bare M.2 dimensions, do not assume the cooler will fit.
For a bare drive, use a heatsink designed for its exact length and controller layout, together with a heat-transfer sheet that covers the intended heat-producing components. Do not stack pads or add a second cover unless the resulting height is still within Sony’s limits. An integrated heatsink is simpler, but it still has to meet the same width, thickness and length requirements.
Speed claims need context
Use the manufacturer’s sequential-read specification as a screening value. Sony recommends 5,500 MB/s or faster, but a higher number on a retail box does not override the physical and interface requirements. Specifications can differ by capacity, firmware and test conditions, so record the exact model number you are buying.

Prepare the console before opening it
- Install the latest PS5 system software while the console is still assembled.
- Confirm that the SSD is PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe and Key M, not M.2 SATA.
- Confirm its length, capacity and complete heatsink dimensions against Sony’s limits.
- Have a clean, soft, flat surface ready so the console cover is not scratched.
- Keep the supplied screw and spacer in a small container while you work.
- Shut down the PS5 fully. Do not open it in Rest Mode.
- Unplug the AC cable and all other connections before removing a cover.
Handle the SSD by its edges. Avoid touching the gold connector contacts or placing the circuit board on a conductive or dusty surface. Do not force the expansion cover or the drive; resistance usually means the part is misaligned.
How to install the M.2 SSD in a PS5

Lower and secure the drive
Press the free end of the SSD down toward the spacer. Reinstall the supplied screw through the drive’s mounting hole into the spacer and tighten it securely, but do not overtighten it or compress the circuit board.
-
Refit both covers
Replace the expansion-slot cover and then the console’s outer cover. If a cover will not sit flush, stop and check that the heatsink is not too tall or wide and that the drive is fully seated.
-
Reconnect and format the drive
Reconnect the cables and power on the PS5. On first use, the console displays a formatting guide for the new M.2 storage. Follow it to format the drive. Formatting uses the entire M.2 SSD, so copy off anything you need before accepting the prompt.
Set the M.2 drive as a practical game location
After formatting, open the PS5 storage settings to see the new M.2 SSD alongside console storage and USB extended storage. You can move compatible games between locations and choose where new games are installed. The exact menu labels can change with system software, but the storage screen identifies the M.2 drive separately from USB storage.

PS5 games installed on the M.2 SSD can be downloaded, updated and played directly. PS4 games can also be stored there. A USB extended-storage drive is different: it can hold PS5 games, but those games must be copied back to the internal console storage or the M.2 SSD before they can be played. Use USB storage as an archive when you need to free space, not as a direct-play location for PS5 software.
Planning space for upcoming exclusives
No official guidance establishes a universal storage requirement for future exclusive games. Plan by your own install-and-delete cycle instead:
- Keep the games you play weekly on the M.2 SSD so updates and launches do not require a transfer.
- Archive completed or rarely played games to USB extended storage or another backup location.
- Reserve free space for patches, downloadable content and temporary installation data.
- Before a major release, check the game’s published install-size requirement and leave additional headroom rather than filling the drive to its last gigabyte.
- Use the M.2 drive for convenience and capacity; do not assume a future title will require it or deliver exactly the same performance as the internal SSD.
Because formatting consumes the whole device, a drive that appears to have a convenient spare partition on a computer will still be treated as one PS5 storage volume after initialization.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance and warranty expectations
The M.2 slot is designed for high-speed PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe storage, which is why Sony recommends a sequential-read rating of at least 5,500 MB/s. That recommendation is a compatibility target, not a promise that every game will load at the same speed as the console’s internal SSD.
Sony does not guarantee every third-party drive that meets the headline specifications. A drive can satisfy the interface, capacity, speed and dimensions and still be subject to its manufacturer’s firmware, thermal and warranty policies. Retain the model number, receipt and warranty information, and use the manufacturer’s support process if the drive develops errors.

Some games may not perform exactly as they do from the internal SSD. If a title behaves unusually after installation, move it temporarily to the internal storage and compare. That test does not prove a drive is defective, but it helps separate a game-specific behavior from a broader storage problem.
Troubleshooting installation and detection problems
The PS5 does not detect the drive
- Power the console down and disconnect it before reopening the bay.
- Verify that the drive is NVMe PCIe Gen4x4 and Key M; an M.2 SATA model will not work.
- Remove and reinsert the SSD diagonally, making sure the connector is fully seated before lowering it.
- Check that the spacer is in the hole matching the drive length and that the retaining screw is holding the drive flat.
- Install the latest system software if you skipped the update before installation.
The cover will not close
Do not press the cover into place. Remove it and inspect the complete heatsink assembly for excess height, width or a protruding mounting clip. Compare the assembled measurement with Sony’s limits, including the separate clearances above and below the circuit board.
The PS5 reports a formatting error
Confirm that the drive is seated and that the console is running current system software, then retry the on-screen format process. Formatting erases the M.2 drive. If the error persists, remove the drive and test whether the PS5 starts normally without it; contact the drive manufacturer if the console works normally but repeatedly rejects that SSD.

The drive becomes unusually hot or games show errors
Shut down the console and verify that the heatsink and heat-transfer sheet are installed as intended and have not shifted. Check that the console’s ventilation openings are unobstructed. Persistent errors, disconnects or abnormal heat warrant a warranty evaluation rather than continued use.
