The dependable route is ATLauncher → Packs → choose a modpack and exact version → Create Server → Install. Start the resulting entry from the Servers tab, then edit eula.txt and change eula=false to eula=true only after reading and accepting Mojang’s terms. The server is a separate installation from the client instance you use to connect.

What you need before installing
An ATLauncher server is not simply an existing single-player instance with multiplayer switched on. ATLauncher creates a separate server installation containing the pack’s server files, loader, libraries and launch script. You also need a matching client instance to join it. The server and client should use the same Minecraft version, modloader and modpack release unless the pack creator explicitly documents a different arrangement.

- ATLauncher: Install the launcher for your operating system from its official distribution.
- A supported pack: Not every modpack provides files that ATLauncher can turn into a server.
- An exact release: Record the Minecraft version, loader and pack version you intend to run before creating anything.
- Java: Use the compatible Java installation supplied or selected by ATLauncher, or follow the pack creator’s Java instructions.
- Disk space and permissions: The launcher must be able to create and modify a server folder, and the account running it needs permission to execute the launch script.
- A client instance: Create an ordinary ATLauncher instance of the same pack and release for each player who will connect.
There is no single RAM figure that is correct for every pack. Mod count, world size, player activity and the creator’s configuration all affect memory demand. Start with the pack’s own guidance and adjust the generated launch script only when the server documentation or observed logs justify a change.
Install ATLauncher on Windows, Linux or macOS
ATLauncher distributes several package formats. Choose the one that fits the operating system rather than downloading a random Java archive from an unofficial mirror.

On Windows, allowing the installer to provide a compatible Java runtime is usually simpler than trying to reconcile several system-wide Java installations. On Linux or macOS, verify which Java executable ATLauncher is using if the launcher opens but a server later fails. Do not assume that the Java version used by another game or development tool is suitable for this pack.
Find the pack and confirm the release
- Open ATLauncher and select the Packs tab.
- Search for the modpack by name, or browse the available pack platforms.
- Open the pack’s version list and select the exact release you want to run.
- Check whether the page offers a Create Server action before proceeding.
The version choice is more than a cosmetic label. A pack release can change its Minecraft base version, loader definition, mods and startup requirements. Write down the selected release before you create the server, because you will need the same choice when you create the client instance and when you diagnose a connection or launch error.
ATLauncher’s pack catalogue can include releases that are intended only for client play. The absence of a server option is a support boundary, not a button that can be enabled in a hidden preference.
Create the server from the Packs tab
When the selected pack supports ATLauncher’s server workflow, the normal installation is short and does not require manually copying individual mods.
- With the pack and version selected, click Create Server.
- Enter a clear server name. Include the pack name and release in the name if you expect to maintain several servers.
- Confirm the pack version shown by the server-creation dialog.
- Click Install and wait while ATLauncher downloads and assembles the server files.
- Open the Servers tab and verify that the new entry appears.
Keep the server name distinct from the client instance name. This prevents you from launching the wrong installation later, especially when two releases of a pack are installed at once. Let the installation finish before moving or renaming its folder; interrupting file extraction can leave a partial installation that looks present but cannot start.
A server created this way is separate from an ATLauncher instance. You still need to install the corresponding pack as a client instance before attempting to join, even if the server and client run on the same computer.

Launch the server and read the first output
- In ATLauncher, open the Servers tab.
- Select the server you just installed.
- Click Launch, or use Launch & Close if you do not want to leave the launcher open.
- Watch the separate terminal, Command Prompt or PowerShell window that ATLauncher opens.
The terminal is the authoritative place to inspect startup progress and errors. The launcher window may only show that a process was started or stopped, while the terminal identifies a missing library, an invalid Java argument, a loader error or a required configuration change. Keep the window open until the server has either completed startup or printed a clear failure.
The first launch may stop before the world starts because the Minecraft EULA has not been accepted. That pause is expected and requires a manual step; repeatedly pressing Launch without changing the file will not bypass it.
Accept the Minecraft EULA correctly
- Stop the failed or paused server process if it is still open.
- Open the server folder shown for that server entry.
- Locate the plain-text file named
eula.txt. - Read the terms in the file and decide whether you accept them.
- If you accept, change the line
eula=falsetoeula=true. - Save the file without changing its name or adding a second extension.
- Launch the server again from the Servers tab.
Changing the value is a legal acceptance step, not a troubleshooting command. Do it only after you have read and agreed to the terms. If you do not accept them, leave the value set to false and do not run the server.
If the server still reports an EULA failure after editing the file, check that you changed the copy inside the active server folder, saved the file as plain text and did not accidentally create eula.txt.txt. A server can generate more than one folder when you create similarly named entries, so use the folder belonging to the entry you launched.

Players connect with an ATLauncher instance, not with the server entry itself. In the Instances area, install the same modpack and exact release selected for the server. The Minecraft version and modloader must agree as well. A client on a nearby release can still fail to connect because one changed mod, loader build or configuration file is enough to make the installations incompatible.
When a pack creator supplies a special client or server procedure, follow that procedure instead of assuming the generic ATLauncher path applies. Some packs distribute separate server files, custom launch scripts or additional configuration that the automatically generated installation does not contain.

Change Java or memory settings safely
ATLauncher can manage a compatible Java installation, but the right Java choice and JVM settings remain pack-dependent. Do not copy arguments from an unrelated modpack simply because both packs use the same launcher.
Non-CurseForge server installations
For a server that is not a CurseForge pack, open the server folder and locate the generated launch script:

Open the script in a text editor and find the quoted variable containing the JVM arguments. Change only the relevant values, preserve the quotation marks and spacing, save a backup of the original script, and launch the server again from ATLauncher. If the process immediately closes, restore the backup and inspect the terminal output for the argument that was rejected.
No universal memory value is established for every pack, so there is no responsible one-size-fits-all allocation to paste into every script. Use the pack creator’s stated requirement when one exists, then observe whether the terminal reports out-of-memory conditions or whether the operating system is exhausting available memory. Allocating more memory than the computer can provide can make the host less stable rather than improving the server.
CurseForge packs
CurseForge packs may use creator-specific server files or instructions. In that case, the creator’s documentation takes precedence over the generic LaunchServer.bat or LaunchServer.sh procedure. If the creator specifies a Java runtime, loader build or JVM argument, use those exact instructions and keep a copy of the original files before editing.
Why “Create Server” is missing
ATLauncher explicitly notes that not all modpacks support creating servers. A missing Create Server button therefore usually means the selected pack has no ATLauncher-generated server distribution, not that the launcher is broken.

Check the release first
Return to the pack’s version list and confirm that you selected the intended release. A pack can offer server creation for one release while omitting it for another because the creator changed distribution rights, loader files or server support.
Look for creator-supplied files
Some creators publish a separate server download, setup archive or launch procedure. Use that material only when it is supplied for the exact pack release you chose. Follow its folder layout and script instructions instead of combining it with files from a different release.
Ask the pack creator when documentation is unclear
ATLauncher staff cannot control how pack creators distribute or support their servers. If the pack page has no server action and no clear instructions, the creator is the appropriate source for a server package or compatibility answer. Do not attempt to construct a server by copying the client’s mods folder unless the creator specifically tells you to do so.

Start with the terminal output, then work through the checks below in order. Change one thing at a time so you can identify which correction solved the failure.

Loader definitions are part of the pack configuration. If a creator has published a release with a faulty loader definition, changing unrelated Java or memory values will not repair it. Use the creator’s corrected release or documented loader version instead of silently substituting a different one.

When publishing or maintaining a pack release, the loader definition should be fixed before the release is distributed. As a server administrator, your practical equivalent is to avoid mixing files from releases and to keep the server and client on the same recorded version.

Self-hosting versus a managed Minecraft server
Self-hosting means ATLauncher creates and runs the server on a computer you control. A managed host supplies a remote machine and a control panel, but you still have to verify that the provider accepts the exact pack and can run its required Java and loader. The choice should follow compatibility checks, not a generic promise of “modpack support.”

Before paying for hosting, obtain the exact pack release, Minecraft version, loader, Java requirement, memory guidance and server-file format. A control panel cannot make an unsupported pack server-compatible.
Safe maintenance after the first successful launch
Keep the client and server release recorded
Write the pack name, release, Minecraft version and loader build in a small maintenance note. This makes it easier to recreate the client instance and identify a version mismatch after an update.
Back up before changing files
Stop the server cleanly before copying or editing its files. Preserve the original launch scripts and configuration so you can undo a failed Java or JVM change. Do not overwrite a working server with files from a different pack release.

Install a new pack release as a separate server entry when possible. Test that entry with a matching client instance before replacing the established installation. This keeps the known-working server available while you verify the new loader, mods and creator instructions.
Use the creator’s support channel for pack-specific failures
ATLauncher supplies the installation mechanism, but pack creators control their mod lists, loader definitions, custom scripts and server distributions. Include the exact release and the terminal’s final error lines when asking for help; a generic statement that “the server will not start” omits the information needed to distinguish a Java problem from a faulty pack release.
