To update an OPPO phone, open the software-update screen for its ColorOS version, download the offered package, and follow the on-screen installation prompts. If the download or installation fails, first verify that the update is intended for your exact model and region, then charge the phone, free storage, use a stable connection, restart, and try again. OPPO also documents a computer-assisted update tool for some phones running ColorOS 11 or newer. A missing update is not automatically a fault: OPPO releases vary by device and country.
What you need to know before updating
OPPO uses ColorOS, its Android-based operating system. The wording and location of the update controls change between ColorOS generations and sometimes between individual phone models. An instruction that is correct for one OPPO phone may not appear verbatim on another.

- Use the update intended for your exact OPPO model and the country or region where the phone is being used.
- Keep the battery sufficiently charged; connect the charger before installation if the level is low.
- Make room in internal storage for the downloaded package and temporary installation files.
- Use reliable Wi-Fi or mobile data with a strong signal. Avoid starting a large download while moving between weak coverage areas.
- Back up important photos, messages and other irreplaceable data as a sensible precaution, even though a normal over-the-air update is designed to preserve personal content.
Do not use a VPN to pretend that the phone is in another country to obtain an update. OPPO says rollout eligibility is tied to model and region, and changing the apparent region can create compatibility or installation problems.
Find the correct software-update screen
First identify the ColorOS generation shown in the phone’s information page. Then use the matching path below. Menu names can differ slightly by model, language and carrier edition.

| ColorOS version | Where to check | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| ColorOS 13 or newer | Settings > About device > ColorOS | Open the update page and check for an available release. |
| ColorOS 12 | Settings > About device | Tap the software or ColorOS update area shown on that page. |
| ColorOS 11 or older | Settings > Software Updates or Settings > System Update | Open the listed update checker. |
If you cannot find an exact match, open Settings and use its search field for “update,” “software update” or “system update.” OPPO notes that screenshots, labels and paths can vary between phones, so do not treat one path as universal.
Install an available update over the air
- Connect the phone to a charger if its battery is not comfortably charged, and connect to a stable Wi-Fi network when possible.
- Open the ColorOS-specific update screen listed above.
- Wait for the phone to check the server. If a package is offered, read the version information and any restart warning.
- Tap the download control, such as Download or Download and install, and keep the phone connected while the package is retrieved.
- When the download finishes, choose Install, Update now or the equivalent prompt. The phone may restart more than once.
- Leave the phone undisturbed until the lock screen or home screen returns. Do not remove the charger or force a shutdown during the installation unless the phone is genuinely frozen.
Afterward, return to the About device page and confirm that the ColorOS or Android version now shows the intended release. The first startup can take longer than usual while the system optimizes applications.
When no update is offered
A “no updates available” message does not prove that the phone is broken. OPPO states that the release process varies by device model and geographic region. Updates can be staged, so two otherwise similar phones may receive the same release at different times.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck eligibility instead of changing regions
Verify the exact model number in Settings > About device and compare it with the model named in OPPO’s local support information. A phone imported from another market may follow the release schedule of its original sales region. Do not use a VPN to force a different regional rollout.
Allow for staged availability
If the model and region are eligible but the update is not listed, wait and check again later. OPPO recommends contacting local support when you need confirmation of availability rather than repeatedly changing network or region settings.
Rule out a temporary check failure
Make sure the phone has a working internet connection, set its date and time to update automatically, close unusually heavy background activity, and restart once before checking again. These steps refresh the connection without altering personal data.

Prepare a failed download for a clean retry
A failed OTA operation commonly results from low battery, insufficient free space, an unstable network, weak signal, incompatibility, or a release that is not yet available for the model or region. Work through this order so that each retry starts from a better state.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Charge the phone. Connect it to power and leave it charging during the installation phase.
- Check storage. Open the storage section in Settings and remove or move large videos, duplicate downloads and unused applications. Empty the recycle-bin or recently deleted area if the phone has one.
- Stabilize the connection. Move close to the Wi-Fi router, pause other large downloads, or switch to a reliable mobile-data connection. If Wi-Fi repeatedly drops, restart the router before trying the update again.
- Improve signal. Move outdoors or to a location with stronger cellular reception if mobile data is required. A progress bar that stops at different percentages on each attempt often points to an unreliable connection.
- Close background apps. Remove demanding games, video editors and large file transfers from the recent-apps view so they do not compete for memory or bandwidth.
- Restart the phone. A normal restart clears temporary processes and reloads the update service.
- Retry from the update screen. Start a fresh check and download rather than repeatedly tapping a stalled notification.
If the phone reports that the package is incompatible, stop retrying and recheck the model and region. An incompatible package is not fixed by deleting more files or changing networks.
Diagnose the symptom you see
| Symptom | Most relevant checks | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No update appears | Model, country or region, staged rollout timing | Wait for local availability or ask regional OPPO support; do not use a VPN to imitate another region. |
| Download will not start | Internet access, signal, battery and available storage | Use a stable connection, connect the charger, free space and restart. |
| Download stops or fails part-way through | Wi-Fi dropouts, weak mobile signal, competing background traffic | Change to a stronger connection, pause other transfers and begin a new download. |
| Installation says there is not enough space | Internal storage, including temporary space | Remove large files and unused apps, then restart the update check. |
| Package is incompatible | Exact model and regional software channel | Do not sideload a different package; confirm eligibility with OPPO. |
| Phone appears frozen during installation | Whether the screen has remained unchanged and unresponsive | Allow reasonable time first; if it is truly frozen, use the force-restart procedure below. |
Choose between the phone and computer-assisted routes
The built-in OTA route is the normal choice because it checks the phone’s own model and regional channel. It needs only the phone, power and a reliable connection, but the update may not be offered until OPPO enables it for that model and country. A computer-assisted route can provide another official check when the phone route fails, but it is restricted by ColorOS version, model and market.
| Consideration | Phone OTA update | Computer-assisted tool |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Depends on model, ColorOS version and region | OPPO documents it for ColorOS 11 and above; model and market support still apply |
| Equipment | Phone, charger and network | Phone, computer and a working connection between them |
| Availability signal | Update appears in the Settings checker | An active update button indicates that the tool has an update for the model |
| Best use | Routine installation and staged-rollout checking | Official fallback when the phone route is unsuccessful and the tool is offered |
This is not a reason to buy a new phone, repair device or special accessory. OPPO’s instructions call for a computer connection but do not establish that a new cable or other product is required. Use the equipment and support options already appropriate for your device and region.
Use OPPO’s computer-assisted update route when it applies
OPPO documents a system-update tool for phones running ColorOS 11 and above. The instructions are published by OPPO Brazil, so availability and the exact computer software may differ in other markets. Treat this as an official alternative for eligible models, not a universal replacement for the phone’s OTA checker.
Requirements
- An OPPO phone that meets the tool’s ColorOS 11-or-newer requirement.
- A computer and a working connection between the computer and phone.
- Sufficient phone battery and free internal storage.
- Time to keep the connection in place while the package is downloaded and installed.
General procedure
- Open OPPO’s official support instructions for the system-update tool available in your market and install or launch the specified computer component.
- Connect the phone to the computer as instructed. Unlock the phone and approve any connection or installation confirmation shown on its screen.
- Let the tool identify the phone and check whether a compatible update is offered.
- If an update is listed, confirm the download and then confirm installation on the phone when prompted. Keep the cable and computer connection undisturbed until the process completes.
- Restart or verify the version only when the tool and phone indicate that it is safe to do so.
If the tool’s Start update or Update now button is disabled, OPPO says that no update is available for that model through the tool at that time. It does not necessarily mean that the phone is damaged, nor does repeatedly reconnecting make an unavailable package appear.

What to do if the phone freezes during installation
Give a seemingly slow installation time to finish before interrupting it. If the display is genuinely frozen and the phone does not respond, OPPO’s support guidance says to hold Power and Volume Up together for at least eight seconds, until the OPPO logo appears.
OPPO states that this force restart does not erase normal content, except content that is already broken or invalid. Do not use the key combination as a routine way to cancel a progressing installation; reserve it for an unresponsive device.
Reset system settings only as a later troubleshooting step
OPPO lists resetting system settings as a possible later step when ordinary troubleshooting has not resolved an update problem. A settings reset is different from a factory reset: OPPO says the settings-reset option does not delete personal data, while a factory reset is an intentional data-erasing operation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Because the control name and location vary by ColorOS version, search Settings for Reset system settings and read the confirmation screen carefully. Do not select an option labeled Erase all data, Factory reset or similar unless you have a separate backup and deliberately intend to wipe the phone. If the update failure is accompanied by repeated crashes, boot loops or signs of storage failure, skip risky experimentation and contact OPPO support.
When to contact OPPO support or a service center
Escalate when the update is confirmed for the correct model and region but still cannot download or install after charging, freeing storage, stabilizing the network, restarting and trying the applicable official route. Also seek help if the phone repeatedly freezes, reboots, shows an error code you cannot interpret, or cannot start normally after an interrupted attempt.
Use the OPPO support channel for your country or region and ask whether the release is currently available for your exact model. OPPO’s service arrangements differ by market; a local service center may be the appropriate route for hardware, storage or connection faults.

Before contacting support, record the model number, current ColorOS version, the country where the phone is being used, the wording of the error, and the point at which the download or installation stopped. These details let support distinguish a staged rollout from a device-specific failure without asking you to repeat every basic check.
A practical decision path
- Update listed in Settings: charge the phone, secure storage and a stable connection, then install through the OTA prompts.
- No update listed: verify model and region, avoid a VPN, and wait for staged availability or ask local OPPO support.
- Download fails: correct battery, storage, signal and background-activity issues, restart, and begin a fresh download.
- Phone route still fails: if the phone runs ColorOS 11 or newer and the tool is offered in your market, try OPPO’s computer-assisted route.
- Tool has no active update button or the phone remains faulty: treat that as an availability or device issue and escalate to official regional support or a service center.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my OPPO phone not showing an Android or ColorOS update?
OPPO releases are staged by device model and country or region, so a compatible phone may not receive the package at the same time as another phone. Confirm the exact model and region, check again later, and ask local OPPO support for availability. Do not use a VPN to imitate another region.
Which Settings path checks for an OPPO update?
For ColorOS 13 and newer, use Settings > About device > ColorOS. ColorOS 12 generally uses Settings > About device. ColorOS 11 and older may use Settings > Software Updates or Settings > System Update. Labels and paths can differ, so search Settings for “update” if necessary.
What should I check before retrying a failed OTA download?
Charge the phone, free internal storage, use stable Wi-Fi or mobile data with a strong signal, pause heavy background activity, close demanding apps, restart the phone, and begin a fresh check. Also confirm that the package is intended for the exact model and region.
Can I use a VPN to get an OPPO update sooner?
No. OPPO advises against switching the apparent region with a VPN. Update eligibility is tied to the device model and regional rollout, and forcing another region can create compatibility or installation problems.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What does a disabled Update now or Start update button mean in OPPO’s computer tool?
OPPO says a disabled button means the tool has no update available for that model at that time. It does not by itself indicate a damaged phone. Reconnecting repeatedly will not make an unavailable package appear.

Does the computer-assisted OPPO update tool work on every phone?
OPPO documents the tool for ColorOS 11 and above, but model and market availability still apply. The instructions cited by OPPO come from Brazil, so check your country’s official support page for the applicable software and procedure.
Will force-restarting a frozen OPPO phone erase my data?
OPPO says holding Power and Volume Up for at least eight seconds until the OPPO logo appears does not erase normal content, except content that is already broken or invalid. Use it only when the phone is genuinely unresponsive, not to interrupt a normal installation.
Is Reset system settings the same as a factory reset?
No. OPPO describes a system-settings reset as a later troubleshooting step that does not delete personal data. A factory reset or Erase all data option is different and intentionally wipes the phone, so read the confirmation screen carefully.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When should I contact OPPO instead of trying more fixes?
Contact regional OPPO support or a service center when the correct model and region are eligible but the update still fails after charging, freeing storage, stabilizing the connection, restarting and trying the applicable official route. Escalate sooner for repeated freezes, boot loops, unexplained error codes or a phone that will not start normally.
The Bottom Line
Use the ColorOS-specific update path for your OPPO model, and install only the release offered for your phone and region. For a failed download, charge the phone, free storage, stabilize the connection, close background activity and restart before trying again. Do not use a VPN to force availability. If the phone runs ColorOS 11 or newer, OPPO’s computer-assisted tool may be an official fallback where supported; a disabled update button means no package is available through that tool. Persistent failures require your regional OPPO support team or a service center.
