Back up important information
A backup is a precaution, not evidence that a normal update routinely erases files. Google’s documented manual backup route is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google.
- Choose All services.
- Tap Backup.
- Select Back up now.
Open Backup details and review what is included. Google says Android backup can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS, but individual apps do not all back up or restore every setting or piece of data. A backup may take up to 24 hours to complete fully, so start it in advance if you need the most complete copy possible. Files held only inside an app, locally stored photos, authenticator records, or other service-specific data may require that app’s own export or cloud-sync feature.
Do not treat the backup screen as a guarantee that every item on the phone has been copied. Check the listed categories and use each important app’s own backup or export instructions where necessary. If a work app, messaging service, authenticator, or game stores information locally, verify its account sync before installing.

Motorola changes menu labels across models and software versions. Start with the standard path, then try the alternatives in the table if you do not see it.

If the labels differ, use the Settings search field for system update. Do not confuse an Android system update with an individual app update in Google Play; they are separate processes. The exact screen can also vary according to the phone’s software version, sales channel, and carrier customization.
Install the update step by step
- Connect to Wi‑Fi and charge the phone. Confirm that Airplane mode is off if it would prevent the connection, and make sure you know the Wi‑Fi password in case the phone restarts.
- Back up important data. Use Settings > Google > All services > Backup > Back up now, then inspect Backup details.

- Leave the phone alone while it installs. It may restart, show a progress screen, or be unavailable for a period. Do not power it off, remove the battery on a removable-battery model, repeatedly press buttons, or attempt another update method during installation.
- Complete any post-restart prompts. The phone may ask for your screen lock, request another restart, or display a finishing message. Follow the prompts until Android returns to the normal home or lock screen.
Motorola’s official instructions tell owners to follow the on-screen installation steps. They do not promise a fixed installation time, so do not treat a long progress screen by itself as proof of failure. Package size, connection quality, available storage, and the phone’s condition can all affect how long the process takes.

Keep the phone in a safe place while it works. Avoid starting immediately before an important call, trip, or payment if you need the phone continuously. The update may make the phone unavailable during one or more restarts, and the installation should not be interrupted simply because the screen appears unchanged for a while.
Confirm that Android actually updated
After the phone is usable again, verify the installed software rather than relying on the notification alone. On many Motorola models, open Settings > About phone > Device details, then look for Android version. Exact labels can differ.
Google’s Android guidance identifies these fields as useful confirmation points:
- Android version — the major Android release installed.
- Android security update — the security-patch level.
- Google Play system update — a separate modular Google system component update.
- Build number — the specific software build running on the phone.
Record the build number and security-update date if you need to contact Motorola or a carrier. If the update notification remains but the version and build have changed, the installation may have completed and the notification may simply need time to refresh. Staged releases
Motorola says it tests many software versions across phone models, regions, and channels. Carrier and partner certification can delay a release, and owners in the same country may receive it at different times. A check that returns no update can therefore reflect rollout timing or eligibility rather than a fault with your phone. Check the basics

What to do if the installation fails
The download will not start
Move closer to the Wi‑Fi router, retry on another trusted network, and make sure the battery is sufficiently charged. If cellular data is the only available connection, check for carrier charges before enabling it. A nearly full storage drive can also prevent a package from downloading; the update screen normally identifies this condition. If the phone reports that it is current, check the model, region, carrier, and build before assuming the update service is broken.

Wait until the first restart and setup activity has completely finished, then check About phone again. Run the update check once more. If the build number has not changed and the phone repeatedly fails, write down the exact error message, model, region, carrier, and current build before contacting Motorola or the carrier. Do not repeatedly interrupt the process or attempt an unapproved firmware package.
The phone appears stuck during installation
Keep it connected to power and allow the on-screen process to continue. Motorola’s published guidance does not specify a universal completion time because package size and device conditions differ. If the device remains unresponsive for an unusually long period, use the model-specific recovery instructions from Motorola support rather than guessing at button combinations or performing a factory reset. A factory reset can erase local data and is not a routine update step.
An app behaves differently afterward
First restart the phone once more and check whether the app has its own update in Google Play. Can you update with a computer?
Some Motorola device guides mention a computer-based update when mobile-network updating is unavailable in a particular country. This is a conditional, model- and region-specific alternative, not a universal method for Motorola phones.
