Install AMX Mod X inside your server’s cstrike directory, with Metamod loading first. The reliable order is: install the platform-matched Metamod binary, point liblist.gam to it, install the AMX Mod X base package, register AMX Mod X in Metamod’s plugins.ini, then restart and run meta list. If AMX Mod X appears in that list, the core installation is working.
What AMX Mod X needs before you start
AMX Mod X is a server-side plugin framework for Counter-Strike 1.6. It does not install into the game client and it does not run as a stand-alone executable. The server loads it through Metamod, so both components must be installed in the correct order.

All paths in this guide are relative to the Counter-Strike mod directory, normally named cstrike. On a dedicated Windows server it is inside the HLServer installation. On Linux it is inside the HLDS installation. A typical final layout looks like this:

└── scripting/Before copying anything, identify the actual cstrike directory used by the running server. Installing one level above it, into the HLDS root, or into a similarly named backup directory leaves the server unable to find the files.

Required files and access
- A Metamod package that matches the server operating system.
- The AMX Mod X base package.
- Optional Counter-Strike/Condition-Zero addon files if you want the game-specific defaults and plugins.
- Permission to edit
liblist.gam, write undercstrike/addons, and restart the server.
Windows uses DLL binaries. Linux uses .so binaries, and a 64-bit Linux installation may require the AMD64 build rather than the 32-bit build. Never upload a Windows DLL to Linux or a Linux shared object to Windows.
Choose an installation method
The manual procedure gives the most control and is suitable when you have shell or local file access. The automatic installer is faster when it can see the server installation or connect to its FTP account. FTP-only administrators should assemble and test the directory tree locally before uploading it.

Manual installation on Windows
1. Create the Metamod directories
- Open the server’s
cstrikedirectory. - Create
addons, thenaddons/metamod, thenaddons/metamod/dlls. - Copy the Windows Metamod DLL supplied by the package into
cstrike/addons/metamod/dlls.
Keep the binary’s original filename. The path you enter in liblist.gam must match that filename and the directory spelling exactly.

2. Point the game DLL entry to Metamod
Open cstrike/liblist.gam in a plain-text editor. Locate the existing game DLL directive and set the Windows entry to:
gamedll "addons\metamod\dlls\metamod.dll"If the Metamod package uses a different DLL filename, substitute that filename. Do not add a second competing gamedll line while leaving the old one active; the server must use the Metamod entry as its game DLL.

3. Create Metamod’s plugin list
Create or edit cstrike/addons/metamod/plugins.ini. This file tells Metamod which secondary plugins to load. Add the AMX Mod X Windows entry after the base package is extracted:
win32 addons\amxmodx\dlls\amxmodx_mm.dllUse the same slash and quoting style shown by the package’s example. If an existing plugins.ini contains other working plugins, append the AMX Mod X line rather than deleting those entries.

4. Extract the AMX Mod X base package
Extract the base archive with cstrike as its destination. The extraction should create cstrike/addons/amxmodx and populate its configuration, module, plugin, scripting, log, and supporting data directories. If the archive contains an outer folder, open it and copy the contents that belong inside cstrike; do not accidentally create a nested path such as cstrike/cstrike/addons/amxmodx.
5. Add the optional Counter-Strike package
If you want the Counter-Strike or Condition-Zero addon, extract it to the same cstrike destination. The files are designed to merge with the base AMX Mod X tree. Review overwrite prompts rather than blindly replacing customized configuration files.
Manual installation on Linux
1. Select the correct Metamod binary
Create cstrike/addons/metamod/dlls and copy the Linux Metamod shared object there. Use the 32-bit Linux build for a 32-bit HLDS installation. On AMD64 Linux, use the AMD64 binary supplied for that platform. The architecture of the binary must match the server process, not merely the operating system label.

2. Edit liblist.gam
In cstrike/liblist.gam, set the Linux game DLL directive to the Metamod path and the exact binary filename supplied by your package. The directive uses forward slashes and the gamedll_linux key. For example, the structure is:
gamedll_linux "addons/metamod/dlls/<matching-metamod-linux-binary>"Replace the bracketed name with the actual 32-bit or AMD64 file. Do not copy the Windows gamedll line as a substitute for the Linux directive.
3. Register AMX Mod X in plugins.ini
After extracting the AMX Mod X base package into cstrike, edit cstrike/addons/metamod/plugins.ini. A 32-bit Linux installation uses the package’s i386 shared object, commonly represented by:
linux addons/amxmodx/dlls/amxmodx_mm_i386.soFor AMD64, use the AMD64 AMX Mod X filename shipped in the package instead of the i386 name. Keep the path relative to cstrike, use forward slashes, and preserve any existing plugin lines.
4. Merge optional game files
Extract the Counter-Strike or Condition-Zero addon package into the same cstrike directory if you need it. Confirm that the resulting addons/amxmodx tree is directly under cstrike and not under an extra archive folder.

Installing through FTP
FTP access changes how files are transferred, not how AMX Mod X is structured. The official manual recommends installing into a “dummy” folder on your hard drive first when FTP is your only access. This lets you inspect the complete tree before uploading it.
- Create a local folder named
cstrikeand reproduce the Metamod and AMX Mod X directories inside it. - Copy the operating-system-appropriate binaries into the local
dllsdirectories. - Edit the local
liblist.gamandaddons/metamod/plugins.iniwith the paths for the remote server’s platform. - Extract the AMX Mod X base package and, if desired, the Counter-Strike/Condition-Zero addon into that local
cstrikefolder. - Connect to the host’s FTP account and open the server’s existing
cstrikedirectory. Do not upload into the directory above it. - Upload the local
addons/metamod,addons/amxmodx,liblist.gam, and any merged files, preserving case, subdirectories, and file extensions. - Use the host’s control panel to stop and start, or restart, the server.
After transfer, inspect the remote tree. It should contain both cstrike/addons/metamod and cstrike/addons/amxmodx. A common FTP failure is a double-nested upload such as cstrike/cstrike/addons, which looks complete in the client but is invisible to the game engine.
Using the automatic installer
The official automatic tool can detect Steam listen servers, Steam dedicated servers, other HLDS installations, and remote FTP locations. Select the actual Counter-Strike installation or enter the FTP location when prompted, then choose the platform-matching components.
The installer can configure Metamod, add AMX Mod X to an existing plugins.ini without erasing its current entries, preserve configuration during upgrades, and offer a mod-specific addon package. Review the destination and platform choices before confirming. An automatic install still requires a server restart and a console verification.

- Run the installer and select the detected local HLDS/Steam installation or configure the remote FTP target.
- Choose Counter-Strike 1.6 and the correct Windows, Linux 32-bit, or Linux AMD64 binaries.
- Allow it to install Metamod and AMX Mod X into the selected
cstrikedirectory. - Choose the optional Counter-Strike/Condition-Zero addon if it is required for your server.
- Finish the installation, restart the server, and verify with
meta list.
Verify that AMX Mod X loaded
Start or restart the server, open its server console, and run:
meta listThe official manual’s verification instruction is to load the server and use meta list to see whether it is loaded. AMX Mod X should appear as a Metamod plugin. This check confirms the loading chain: the game found Metamod, Metamod read plugins.ini, and the AMX Mod X binary could be loaded.
Do this check before changing gameplay settings or adding third-party plugins. If AMX Mod X is listed, continue with configuration in the files under cstrike/addons/amxmodx/configs and add plugins only after the base framework is confirmed.
Troubleshoot a failed installation
meta list does not show AMX Mod X
- Confirm that Metamod itself is being loaded through the correct
gamedllorgamedll_linuxdirective incstrike/liblist.gam. - Check that the Metamod binary exists in
cstrike/addons/metamod/dllsand that its filename matches the directive exactly. - Open
cstrike/addons/metamod/plugins.iniand compare the AMX Mod X line with the actual binary path. - Verify the operating-system and architecture choice. Windows requires a DLL; Linux requires the appropriate
.so, including AMD64 where applicable. - Restart the server after every path or configuration change; editing a file while the process is running does not reload the game DLL chain.
The server starts but AMX Mod X files appear ignored
- Check that the files were extracted directly under the server’s
cstrikedirectory, not one directory above, below, or inside a secondcstrikefolder. - Confirm that
addons/amxmodxcontains itsdlls,modules,plugins,scripting, andconfigsdirectories. - On FTP hosts, compare the remote hierarchy with the local dummy installation. Re-upload missing directories without changing their names or case.
The server fails after replacing the game DLL entry
- Restore the previous
liblist.gamfrom a backup and confirm which operating system the server actually runs. - Use the binary supplied for that platform and architecture; do not mix Windows and Linux files.
- Check for typographical errors in the directive, including backslashes on Windows, forward slashes on Linux, quotation marks, and the exact binary filename.
An existing plugin disappeared
Metamod’s plugin list may already contain other entries. Keep them and append the AMX Mod X line. The automatic installer is designed to append rather than erase an existing plugins.ini; a manual edit should follow the same principle.
Upgrade and maintenance practices
- Back up
liblist.gam,addons/metamod/plugins.ini, and the entireaddons/amxmodx/configsdirectory before upgrading. - Preserve customized configuration files when extracting a newer package; compare changes instead of overwriting blindly.
- Keep the Metamod and AMX Mod X binaries matched to the server’s operating system and architecture.
- After an upgrade, restart the server and run
meta listbefore troubleshooting individual gameplay plugins. - When transferring by FTP, verify the hierarchy again after an upgrade because archive extraction can add an extra top-level folder.
Installation checklist
- Destination: Every file is under the active
cstrikedirectory. - Metamod: Its binary is in
addons/metamod/dlls. - Game DLL:
liblist.gampoints to Metamod using the correct platform directive. - AMX Mod X: The base package created
addons/amxmodxand its support directories. - Plugin registration:
addons/metamod/plugins.inicontains the platform-specific AMX Mod X entry. - Architecture: Windows DLL, Linux i386, or Linux AMD64 files match the server process.
- Restart: The server was fully restarted after the files and configuration were uploaded.
- Verification:
meta listdisplays AMX Mod X as a loaded plugin.
Once these checks pass, the framework is installed and ready for normal AMX Mod X configuration and plugin management.
