To host a Technic modpack, build a dedicated Forge server with the exact Minecraft and Forge versions used by the client pack, copy the pack’s server-compatible files, accept the EULA, and start it with an appropriate Java runtime. Everyone who connects must install the identical Technic pack version. Players on your home network can connect directly; friends elsewhere need router port forwarding or a tunneling service.

The reliable order is: identify the pack versions, install Forge as a server, copy and clean the pack files, launch once to create eula.txt, set the EULA to true, launch again, then configure network access. What you need before installing
A Technic client pack is not itself a dedicated server. The server still needs a matching Minecraft server runtime, normally Forge, plus the pack’s server-side mods and configuration. Gather these items before creating files:
- The exact Technic pack name and version (or build number) that players will use.
- The Minecraft version and Forge version listed by that pack.
- A computer or rented server with enough CPU, memory, storage, and a stable connection for the number of players and the pack’s workload.
- Java compatible with that Minecraft version. The Forge installer requires Java to be installed; Technic’s help center explicitly notes that “running the installer requires having Java installed.” Technic’s server guide provides the version mapping below.
- Permission to create folders, run Java, and open the server port through the host operating system’s firewall.
- A backup location for the world and configuration before the first public launch.
Record the version matrix
Write the values down in a small text file. A server running a different Minecraft or Forge build can fail during startup or reject clients even when the pack name looks correct.

These are compatibility examples, not a promise that every modpack supports every later Java build. If the pack page, server files, or mod author specifies a different Java release, follow that instruction.
Create the Forge server
1. Make a dedicated server folder
Create a new folder used only by this server, such as Minecraft-Servers/MyPack on Windows or ~/minecraft-servers/mypack on Linux. Avoid placing the server in the Technic Launcher’s client cache. A separate folder makes backups, updates, permissions, and troubleshooting safer.
Download the Forge installer for the exact Minecraft and Forge versions recorded above. Do not choose the newest Forge installer by habit: the server and every client must use the build expected by the pack. Keep the installer in the dedicated folder or in a temporary download location you can identify later.
2. Run the installer in server mode
Start the installer with Java. On a graphical system, double-clicking the installer may open its interface; if that does not work, run a command in the folder containing the installer:
java -jar forge-installer.jar
Replace forge-installer.jar with the actual filename. In the Forge window, select Install server, choose the dedicated server folder, and confirm. The installer places the Forge server files and libraries there. If it reports that Java cannot be found, correct the Java installation or the system’s PATH before proceeding; changing mod files will not fix an installer-level Java error.
When installation completes, inspect the folder. Depending on the Forge build, you may see a versioned Forge jar, a vanilla server jar, libraries, and generated launch scripts. Do not delete files simply because their names differ from examples found online.
Copy the Technic pack into the server
Use the pack’s exact files
Install or locate the same pack version that your players will use, then copy the pack’s mods, config, and any asset folders into the dedicated server folder. Technic’s short server procedure identifies these as the files that need to be transferred, while its pack-authoring documentation describes bin, mods, and config as core pack folders. Merge folders rather than replacing Forge’s generated libraries or launch files. If Windows asks whether to combine folders, allow the contents to merge and keep both sets of files. On Linux, copy the directories with their contents, preserving filenames and permissions.
Remove client-only content
A dedicated server cannot load a mod that exists only to render a client interface, provide a client cosmetic feature, or alter local input. Remove every mod the pack author labels as client-only, together with configuration folders that belong exclusively to those removed mods. Leaving one behind commonly causes a startup crash or a missing-mod error.
Do not remove a mod merely because it has no visible server screen. Many gameplay, world-generation, library, and networking mods must exist on both sides. If the pack documentation does not clearly classify a file, leave it in place for the first test and use the startup log or the author’s server instructions to identify the required change.
Keep client and server builds identical
Copying files from one pack release while asking players to run another release is not a supported configuration. Freeze the chosen pack version before inviting anyone. Record the pack version, Minecraft version, Forge version, Java version, and any deliberate server-side configuration changes in a text file beside the server.
Packaging a private or custom pack
If you are distributing a custom Technic pack rather than using a public one, Technic’s authoring guidance requires a direct-download URL for the pack archive. The URL must deliver the archive itself, not an HTML landing page that asks the launcher to click another button. Include the expected bin, mods, and config structure, test the download from a clean account, and then give players the pack’s Technic Platform page or API link.
Start the server and accept the EULA
Use Forge’s generated launch script first
Recent Forge installers may create run.bat for Windows and run.sh for Linux or other Unix-like systems. These scripts select the correct Forge launch arguments and are preferable to guessing a jar filename. Run the script from inside the server folder, not from a shortcut whose working directory points elsewhere.
On Linux, make the script executable if necessary:
chmod +x run.sh
Then launch it with ./run.sh. On Windows, double-click run.bat or run it from Command Prompt so that error messages remain visible.

Fallback start command
If no launch script was generated, create a small script that invokes the Forge server jar. Technic’s example is:
java -Xmx4G forge.jar nogui
Replace forge.jar with the actual Forge server jar name and adjust the memory value for the pack and host. The -Xmx4G value is an allocation example, not a universal requirement. Allocating more memory than the machine can provide can make the operating system swap or terminate other services; allocating too little can cause long pauses or an out-of-memory failure. Leave memory for the operating system and any other applications running on the machine.
Complete the first launch
The first run normally stops after creating files, including eula.txt. Open that file, change the line from eula=false to eula=true only if you agree to Mojang’s Minecraft EULA, save it, and start the same script again. A server that repeatedly stops at the EULA message has either not saved the edit or is being launched from a different folder.
Allow the second launch to finish generating the world and server files. Watch the console for a message that the server is ready for connections. Stop it with the console’s normal shutdown command before editing configuration files or copying a backup; closing the window can interrupt world saves.

Test locally before inviting friends
Run the server and join from a Minecraft client on the same computer using localhost, or from another device on the same home network using the host computer’s private LAN address. Use the identical Technic pack version and let the client finish loading before connecting.
A local test separates mod and Java problems from router problems. If the server crashes before it reaches a ready state, fix the Forge, Java, or mod error first. If local players can join but an outside player cannot, the server software is probably working and the remaining issue is network reachability or firewall configuration.
Let players outside your home network connect
Technic’s server instructions say that players outside your Wi-Fi need either port forwarding or a port-tunneling service, followed by a server restart. The two approaches solve the same reachability problem but have different operational trade-offs.

Direct forwarding checklist
- Give the server computer a predictable private LAN address, either by reserving it in the router or configuring the host carefully.
- Open the server’s listening port in the host firewall. Java Edition commonly uses port
25565, but use the value shown in the server’sserver.propertiesif you changed it. - Create a router forwarding rule from the chosen external port to that private address and the same internal port. Router labels differ by manufacturer, so follow the documentation for your exact model.
- Restart the server after saving the rule, as Technic’s instructions recommend, and test from a connection that is not your home Wi-Fi, such as a phone hotspot.
- Give friends your public address and port, never the private address beginning with ranges such as
192.168or10.. Do not publish the address in a public forum.
If forwarding appears correct but outside tests still fail, your internet provider may use carrier-grade NAT, the router may be double-NATed behind another gateway, or the host firewall may still block Java. In those cases, ask the provider for a public address, place the forwarding rule on the upstream router, or use a tunnel that supports your player count.
Tunneling checklist
- Create an account with a tunneling service that supports Minecraft Java traffic and review its player, bandwidth, and session limits.
- Install its connector on the same machine as the server, or follow its documented agent placement.
- Point the tunnel at the local port shown in
server.properties. - Start the Minecraft server, start the tunnel, and give players the tunnel address and port exactly as displayed.
- Keep the connector running whenever the server is available, and monitor whether its public address changes between sessions.
Have every player install the same Technic pack
Players should use the Technic Launcher, search for the pack by name, or paste the pack’s Platform API link. Technic’s installation instructions are at How to Install Modpacks. The official download page says, “The Technic Launcher handles all of the heavy lifting for you,” and its Windows installer includes the Java runtime Technic needs: Technic Launcher download.
The launcher’s bundled runtime helps a Windows player run the client, but it does not replace the Java installation required to run the Forge server installer. Treat the client and server as separate Java environments.
Tell players to select the same pack release you recorded, wait for the launcher to finish downloading, and launch once before connecting. A player who has an older release, a manually edited mods folder, or a different Forge build should return to the clean pack installation rather than copying random files from another player.

Self-hosting is practical when you have a machine that can stay on, enough upload capacity, and control of the home router. A paid host can be easier when you need continuous uptime, automatic backups, or a location close to a distributed group of players. The trade-offs are operational rather than a guarantee of better mod compatibility.

Whichever route you choose, keep an independent copy of the world and configuration. A hosting panel is not a substitute for a backup you can restore elsewhere.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The Forge installer will not open
Confirm that Java is installed and that the command java -version reports the runtime you intended to use. A file association can point to the wrong Java installation even when another version is installed. Run the installer explicitly with the desired Java executable, then select Install server again.
The server crashes while loading mods
Check that the Minecraft and Forge versions match the pack’s recorded matrix. Then compare the server’s mods and config contents with a clean copy of the same pack. Remove only files the pack author identifies as client-only. A mod copied from another release can be incompatible even when its filename looks similar.

Open the eula.txt in the folder used by the launch script, change the value to true after accepting the license, save it, and launch from that same folder. Multiple server folders are a common reason an edit appears to have no effect.
Players see a missing-mod or incompatible-version message
Compare the player’s pack release, Minecraft version, and Forge build with the server record. Have the player remove the local installation and install the exact release again through the Technic Launcher instead of adding individual jars.
The server runs out of memory or pauses heavily
Review the Java heap setting in the launch script and the amount of physical memory available to the host. Increase the heap only when the machine has spare memory; otherwise reduce concurrent workload, close unrelated applications, or move the server to hardware with more capacity. The sample -Xmx4G command is not a diagnosis or a recommended value for every pack.
Local players can join but remote friends cannot
Test the host firewall, verify that the forwarding rule targets the current private LAN address, and confirm that the forwarded port equals the server’s configured port. Test from a genuinely external connection. If the internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT or a second router, use the upstream router or a compatible tunnel.

Stop the server, restore the matching pack’s configuration and mod files, and check whether the world was created with a different pack release. Keep a backup before changing generated world data. Do not delete region or player files as a first response; that can destroy progress without fixing the version mismatch.
Updating the pack without breaking the world
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server normally.
- Copy the complete server folder or, at minimum, the world,
mods,config, scripts, and server properties to a separate backup location. - Record the current pack, Minecraft, Forge, and Java versions so you can roll back.
- Install the new pack release in a separate test folder. Do not overwrite the working server until it starts successfully.
- Apply the pack’s documented server-side changes, remove newly identified client-only files, and test with one local player.
- Have every player update to the same release before reopening the public endpoint.
Keeping the old folder intact gives you a recovery path if a mod changes world-generation behavior or the new Forge build refuses to load an existing configuration.
Final pre-launch checklist
- Exact Minecraft and Forge versions match the client pack.
- Java matches the pack’s documented requirement.
- Forge was installed with Install server in a dedicated folder.
- The server contains the pack’s
mods,config, and required asset folders. - Client-only mods and their exclusive configuration folders are absent.
- The first launch created
eula.txt, and you seteula=trueafter accepting the EULA. - The launch script uses the correct Forge jar and a memory value the host can support.
- A local connection succeeds before networking is opened.
- Remote access uses a tested forwarding rule or a running tunnel.
- Every player installed the same Technic pack release through the launcher.
- A restorable backup exists before public play and before future updates.
Following this sequence gives you a reproducible Technic server: Forge supplies the dedicated runtime, the pack supplies matching mods and configuration, Java runs the correct version, and networking determines who can reach it.
