Installing a standard Sensi Smart Wi-Fi Thermostat (model series ST55/ST55U) is a swap-and-wire job. You confirm your system is compatible, find out whether you need a C (common) wire, photograph and label the old wiring, mount the new base, connect each wire to the matching terminal, and finish setup in the Sensi app. Sensi’s own manual recommends the app for a first wall installation. This guide covers the decisions that matter before you touch a screwdriver, and what to do when the wiring doesn’t match what you expected.
Step 0: Confirm which Sensi you have
Sensi sells several thermostats, and their wiring requirements differ. This article covers the standard Sensi Smart Thermostat, model series ST55/ST55U. If your box says Sensi Touch, Touch 2 or Lite, don’t assume these rules apply. Sensi’s published guidance says Touch and Touch 2 require a C wire in every application, while Lite and the standard Smart model have conditional requirements.

Check that your HVAC system is compatible
Use Sensi’s compatibility chart or wire picker before you buy or start wiring. Sensi’s chart lists these system types as supported, subject to its C-wire footnotes and your exact configuration:
Recommended Free Tools
- Conventional heating and cooling (gas, oil or propane furnace with air conditioner; electric furnace; boiler or radiant)
- Heat only
- Cool only
- Heat pump and geothermal
Sensi lists these as not compatible:
- Communicating or proprietary systems
- Line-voltage systems (typically baseboard heaters wired to mains voltage)
- Millivolt systems
- 12V RV and camper systems
Whole-home humidifier and dehumidifier control is listed for the standard Smart, Touch and Touch 2 models, but not for Sensi Lite.

Does my Sensi thermostat need a common wire (C-wire)?
The C wire carries constant 24 V power so the thermostat can run its Wi-Fi radio and display without relying on the heating or cooling call. For the standard Sensi Smart model, Sensi’s chart says:
| System type | C wire needed (standard Smart, ST55/ST55U) |
|---|---|
| Conventional heating and cooling | Generally not required (the product page notes an exception for HomeKit compatibility) |
| Heat only | Required |
| Cool only | Required |
| Heat pump | Required |
Recheck the chart for your exact system, and for any smart-home integration you plan to use, since these footnotes can change.

What if I don’t have a common wire?
If you need a C wire and your wall cable doesn’t have one connected, Sensi describes these options:
- Use an unused conductor. Cables often contain a spare wire tucked behind the thermostat. Verify at the HVAC equipment’s wiring diagram that it can serve as C, and connect it to the C terminal at both ends.
- Convert the G (fan) wire. In some configurations the G conductor can be repurposed as C through the app’s setup. Consider whether you lose a fan function you want.
- Use a C-wire conversion kit. Sensi points to these kits as another route; suitability depends on your system.
- Two-wire heat-only systems. Sensi documents a separate option using a 24 VAC external transformer.
All of these change wiring and may affect system functions. If you can’t confirm which option fits, stop and ask Sensi support or an HVAC professional.

Prepare before you disconnect anything
- Download the Sensi app and start the installation flow for your model. It walks you through the wiring for your system.
- Turn off power to the HVAC system at the breaker or equipment switch before handling wires. This is a prudent safety step; follow your model’s current instructions for the exact procedure.
- Remove the old thermostat’s cover and photograph it with every wire attached and every terminal letter legible.
- Label each wire individually with the letter of the terminal it was on. Sensi cautions that wire color doesn’t always match the terminal letter, so don’t label by color.
Know the terminals
These definitions come from the Sensi manual. They describe what each terminal does, not a universal wiring recipe, so follow the app and your system diagram.
| Terminal | Function |
|---|---|
| RH | 24 V power for heating |
| RC | 24 V power for cooling |
| C | Common 24 V connection |
| G | Indoor blower fan |
| Y | First cooling stage (conventional) or first compressor stage (heat pump) |
| Y2/* | Second stage or, depending on configuration, humidifier function |
| W/E | First indoor heat stage, or heat-pump auxiliary/emergency heat |
| W2/* | Second indoor heat or auxiliary/emergency stage, or dehumidifier function |
| O/B | Heat-pump changeover valve, or certain zone-panel connections |
| L | Heat-pump L connection |
The RC/RH jumper
The thermostat has a small jumper between RC and RH. The manual says that if separate RC and RH wires come from the wall, you clip the jumper on the thermostat; it is only to be clipped when separate RC and RH transformers are present. If you only have one of the two wires, leave it alone. Don’t cut it on a guess.

Install the thermostat
- Remove the old thermostat from its wall plate once all wires are labeled and photographed. Keep the wires from falling back into the wall, for example by wrapping them around a pencil.
- Mount the Sensi base on the wall, feeding the wires through the opening. Level it and secure it with the supplied screws (use the included anchors if you’re drilling into drywall).
- Connect the wires to the matching terminals as the app instructs, matching your labels to the terminal letters. Confirm each is seated firmly.
- Attach the thermostat face to the base.
- Restore power at the breaker or equipment switch.
- Finish in the app: connect and register the thermostat to your Wi-Fi and account. Check the current standard-model guide for network requirements before you start, since the 2.4 GHz detail Sensi publishes appears on the Touch 2 page and shouldn’t be assumed for the ST55.
- Test. Run heat and cool modes from the app and confirm the system responds.
How long does it take?
Sensi’s Touch 2 installation page cites a survey of 2,120 people who bought and installed a Sensi Touch in 2018; about 70% reported finishing in 30 minutes or less. That’s an older manufacturer survey about a different model, and Sensi notes that adding a common wire can lengthen the job. Treat it as a rough expectation, not a promise.

If the app reports an invalid configuration, the wires you’ve connected don’t form a combination Sensi supports for the system type you selected. Turn the power off and compare your terminals against your photo and the equipment’s wiring diagram, and recheck the system type you chose in the app.
