What you need before starting
A security update changes system software, so prepare the Galaxy before asking it to download or install anything. The exact requirements shown on the phone take priority over general guidance.
Use a reliable connection
Connect to Wi‑Fi if practical. This avoids using mobile data for the download and may be required by your carrier. Samsung US Support states: “Some carriers may require your device to be connected to Wi‑Fi to check for and install updates.” If the update screen says Wi‑Fi is required, connect before trying again. Stay within a reliable network range while the package downloads; if the connection drops, follow the message shown by the phone instead of repeatedly tapping controls.

Have enough battery and storage
Keep the device charged and make sure there is enough free storage for the downloaded package and the installation process. Samsung’s regional instructions are not identical: Samsung Singapore advises at least 20% battery, while Samsung Canada advises at least 50%. Treat those as regional instructions rather than a universal Galaxy threshold; follow the level requested by your own device or local Samsung support page. If the phone reports that storage is insufficient, free space using the device’s normal storage controls and then run the check again. Do not assume a low-battery warning means the update is defective.
Protect important data and choose a safe time
Back up important data before starting. The installation can restart the phone, and Samsung says the device is temporarily unavailable during the process, including for calls. Do not begin immediately before an expected call or when you cannot leave the device undisturbed. Make sure you know the phone’s normal unlock method, because you may need to unlock it after the restart before checking the result.
Record the starting state
For a support question, note the model name, country and carrier, plus the Android version, build information and security status currently displayed. These details make it easier to distinguish a staged rollout from an update that is not intended for that exact device. A screenshot or written note is useful if the update page changes after installation.

The on-device method is the normal way to check for and install a security update. Labels differ slightly between models, Android versions and carriers, so choose the control that has the same purpose as the wording below.
- Open Settings. Launch the Settings app from the app screen or notification panel.
- Find the update page. Tap Software update. Some Galaxy devices or carrier builds call this System updates.
- Start a check. Tap Download and install, Check for updates, or the similarly named carrier-specific command. The phone contacts the update service and reports whether a package is available.
- Review the offer. If an update appears, read the information shown on the device. Confirm that the phone has the required connection, battery and storage before proceeding. If the screen identifies a restart or a period when the device cannot be used, plan for that interruption.
- Download and install. Follow the on-screen prompts. Depending on the model, the download and installation may be presented as separate confirmations or as one sequence. Allow the phone to finish downloading before judging how long installation will take.
- Leave the phone alone during installation. A restart can be part of completing the update. Do not power off the device, remove its connection or attempt to use it while the installation screen is active. Wait for the phone to return to the lock screen or home screen and for the prompts to finish.
If the check reports that no update is available, that is only the result for this device, carrier and location at that moment. It does not by itself prove that the phone has the newest patch worldwide or that a previous installation failed.
Verify that the security update was applied
Use more than one screen when possible. One confirms the last successful update event; another identifies the software currently installed. The screens may use different dates or descriptions, so read each one rather than relying on a single notification.
Check “Last update”
- Return to Settings > Software update.
- Tap Last update if that item is present.
- Read the displayed date and summary. This screen is intended to show the most recent successful update recorded by the device.
Not every Galaxy software build exposes a Last update page. Its absence is a menu difference, not evidence that installation failed. Continue with the software-information and security-status checks below. A date in this history is an update event; it should not automatically be read as the date of a particular monthly security patch unless the device labels it that way.

Inspect software information
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone, or About tablet on a Galaxy tablet.
- Choose Software information.
- Read the Android version and build information shown there. Keep these details if you need to ask Samsung or your carrier which release is installed.
The software-information page identifies the installed system. It is different from a page that reports whether the device is currently considered secure, so do not treat the Android version alone as a security-update confirmation. When contacting support, provide the complete values exactly as displayed rather than only the major Android number.
Check the dedicated security status, when available
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security and privacy.
- Select Updates.
- Tap Security update.
On supported versions, this page reports the device’s security-update status. The path is not present on every model or software version; if it is missing, rely on the update history and software-information pages that your Galaxy provides. The security-status page is a separate check from the Android-version field, so inspect both when you are confirming a security fix.
Choose between the two documented installation routes
Samsung documents an on-device route and an optional computer route. Neither is established as universally better; choose based on which access and equipment you have.

The phone route has the fewest moving parts: it does not require a computer to recognize the device. Smart Switch can be useful when the settings route is unavailable, but it adds a computer, software and cable connection that must remain in place. The documented instructions do not establish that either route delivers an update sooner or supports more models in every market.

Install with Smart Switch on a computer
Smart Switch is the documented alternative when the phone’s own update page cannot be used or a computer workflow is more convenient. The computer must recognize the Galaxy, and the supplied USB cable should remain connected for the entire operation.
- Install and open Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy to the computer with the supplied USB cable.
- Allow the computer and phone to complete their connection prompts.
- Check the Smart Switch window for an available software-update option.
- If an update is offered, read the instructions and start the process.
- Keep the cable connected and do not use the phone until Smart Switch reports completion and the Galaxy has finished any required restart.
If Smart Switch does not show an update, it has not established that a newer package is available for that exact model, carrier and market. Verify the information on the phone and consult Samsung or the carrier rather than forcing an installation. Do not substitute an unrelated cable or utility on the assumption that it is required; Samsung’s documented workflow refers to the cable supplied with the device.
How to interpret the verification screens
Last update
This is an event record. A date and summary indicate that the device recorded a successful update operation. It does not necessarily use the same wording as the security-patch label, and it may not identify every component changed. Treat it as evidence that the update process completed according to the device’s history.

Software information
This is an installed-build record. The Android version and build information identify what software is running now. Record the complete values when contacting support, because model and software details determine which releases apply. If the build information changed after the restart, that supports the conclusion that system software was installed; still check the dedicated security status when the menu is available.

Security update
This is a security-status record available on supported menus. It is the most direct place to see the device’s security-update state when your software includes the path Security and privacy > Updates > Security update. Its wording and placement can differ by software version and region, so compare what the phone actually reports rather than another owner’s screenshot.
Using the three screens together prevents a common mistake: confusing a successful restart, an Android-version number or an old update-history entry with confirmation that a particular security package is current. If the screens appear inconsistent, preserve the displayed dates and build values and ask Samsung or the carrier about that exact model and market.
What to do when no update is offered
Release availability is not simultaneous for every Galaxy. Samsung identifies location, carrier, model and software version as factors in both rollout timing and the screens shown on the device. Older devices may also be unable to move to the latest Android version.
Check the result carefully
- Read the date or patch information displayed in the update and security-status pages.
- Compare the model and software details under About phone/tablet > Software information with the information for your market.
- Try again from a reliable Wi‑Fi connection if the carrier requires Wi‑Fi for checking or installing.
- Do not infer a failed installation solely from the absence of a new offer; the device may already have the latest release available to that carrier and region.
- Check whether the phone is showing an update-history date even though the download page has no new package. Those are different pieces of information and can both be correct.
Confirm the exact model and market
Samsung’s security-update information is model-specific. Use the exact model designation, carrier and country when checking Samsung’s published information. A release shown for another region or carrier may not yet apply to your device. Avoid promising yourself a particular patch date from a different Galaxy; rollout stages can differ even within the same product family.

If the expected update remains unclear, contact the carrier or Samsung support with the model, country, carrier, Android version, build information and the security-update status shown on the phone. Those details let support distinguish a staged rollout from an unsupported software version. Explain whether you checked on the Galaxy, through Smart Switch, or both, and quote any message shown by the update screen.
If the installation is interrupted or does not finish
During installation, the Galaxy can be unavailable and may restart. The safest response is to follow the exact on-screen instruction and allow the process to complete rather than interrupting it. A temporary blank, progress or restart screen is not by itself proof of failure.

- The phone is restarting: wait for the restart and the normal lock or home screen before judging the result.
- A progress screen is still active: keep the device connected to its required network or, for Smart Switch, keep the USB cable attached.
- The update returns to the update page: open Last update if available, then inspect Software information and the security-status page to determine what actually installed.
- The expected release is still absent: note the displayed software and security information, then check model-, carrier- and region-specific availability with Samsung or the carrier.
- The phone is temporarily unavailable: do not assume calls or other functions will work until the device completes its restart and returns to normal operation.
Do not claim success merely because the phone powered back on. Verification requires the recorded update information or the installed software and security status. If an error message remains on screen, record its wording for support instead of repeatedly starting and stopping the process.

Samsung’s instructions are not a single universal interface. A US support page notes that labels and screens can vary by carrier, software version and model. Canadian guidance describes a security-status path that may not appear on a Galaxy sold elsewhere, while Singapore guidance uses a different battery recommendation. These differences explain why another Galaxy owner may describe a control that you cannot see.
Rollout stages also vary by location and carrier. General instructions cannot establish a monthly cadence, a guaranteed patch date or a support end date for your phone. Those facts require the exact model, market and carrier information. The absence of a particular menu, battery threshold or release date should therefore be treated as a regional or software-version difference until Samsung or the carrier confirms otherwise.
