You can install a monitor arm safely without denting or cracking your desk if you treat the desk, clamp or grommet, and monitor as one compatibility check. Measure the desktop at the mounting point, inspect the edge and underside, verify the arm’s load and VESA limits, and use only the mounting method and protective hardware approved for that exact model. A clamp normally avoids drilling; a grommet mount needs a correctly sized hole and makes a permanent change.
Check compatibility before opening the clamp
Monitor arms that look alike can have different thickness ranges, pressure plates, hole requirements, and weight limits. Find the installation manual for your exact model before positioning the base. Record the following measurements and specifications:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Desktop thickness: Measure at the intended mounting point, not only at the front edge. Veneer, trim, or a recessed underside can change the usable thickness.
- Edge geometry: A clamp generally needs a flat, continuous edge. A rounded, beveled, tapered, or very thin lip may prevent the upper and lower pressure surfaces from sitting squarely.
- Rear clearance: Make sure the clamp can extend behind the desk without striking a wall, cable tray, modesty panel, or other furniture.
- Underside clearance: Look for aprons, beams, drawers, crossbars, and reinforcing rails that could block the pressure plate.
- Monitor compatibility: Check the display’s weight without its original stand, the arm’s supported weight range, and the monitor’s VESA hole pattern. Include any adapter, webcam, or other accessory that will remain on the display.
Do not substitute a measurement from another arm. Manufacturer dimensions are product-specific.

Choose a mounting method that suits the desk
| Method | What the desk must provide | Desk impact | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clamp | Accessible, sufficiently flat edge; thickness and underside clearance within the exact manual | Normally no drilling; pressure can dent unsuitable surfaces | Desks with a strong, exposed rear edge |
| Grommet | Existing compatible hole, or permission and material suitability for drilling; correct hole diameter and thickness | Existing hole may avoid new work; a drilled hole is permanent and fixes the base location | Desks with a suitable cable hole or a deliberately planned fixed position |
| Freestanding stand | Enough surface area and a stable desktop | No clamp pressure or drilling; uses desk space | Glass, hollow-core, obstructed, or otherwise incompatible desks |
When a clamp is appropriate
Use a clamp only when the desk thickness, edge profile, rear clearance, and underside are within the arm’s instructions. A cable-management cutout is not automatically a suitable clamping edge. The clamp must be able to sit level and keep its pressure plate fully against the underside.
When a grommet is appropriate
A grommet mount passes a bolt through a compatible hole and secures the base with a plate or washer below the desktop. An existing cable hole works only if its diameter, location, and surrounding material match the arm’s manual. If no hole exists, drilling is acceptable only when the desk material can be drilled cleanly and the manufacturer permits it. If you may want to move the arm later, do not drill merely to make installation possible.
When to use a freestanding stand
A freestanding base is the safer alternative when the desk has no suitable edge or hole, when structural parts block a clamp, or when the manufacturer excludes the desktop material. It occupies more workspace, but it avoids concentrated clamp pressure and permanent drilling.

Protect fragile or dent-prone surfaces
Glass, hollow-core desktops, soft wood, bamboo, veneered particleboard, and thin laminate can crack, crush, or develop a permanent indentation under a concentrated load. First check the desk maker’s limits and the monitor-arm maker’s instructions. Approval from one does not guarantee approval from the other.
BenQ’s BSH02 quick-start guide states: “Required for glass or fragile tabletops. Use reinforcement plates to protect tabletops and enhance stability.” Its checklist also identifies glass, hollow-core, and dent-prone desks as cases that may need a plate to distribute clamp pressure. That guidance applies to the named setup; it is not blanket permission to clamp any glass or hollow-core desk.
Use the supplied protection first
- Install the included pad, reinforcement plate, washer, or pressure spreader exactly as shown.
- Keep the pad centered under the pressure area. A pad partly hanging over an edge can concentrate force instead of spreading it.
- Do not replace a specified plate with a random piece of wood or metal and assume the desk is protected. Thickness, stiffness, edge shape, and compatibility matter.
- If the manual says a reinforcement plate is required and your arm does not include one, verify the approved accessory before installing. A separately purchased monitor-arm desk reinforcement plate is useful only when its dimensions and load rating match the arm.
Stop if the surface starts to whiten, bow, crack, or visibly compress while you are tightening.
Prepare the workspace
- Clear the area behind and beneath the desk. Remove items that could be crushed if the arm shifts.
- Place a blanket or the monitor’s original packaging on the floor or another stable surface for temporary support.
- Gather the arm manual, supplied tool, correct screws, washers, pads, and any reinforcement plate.
- Measure the proposed location and mark it lightly with removable tape. Keep the arm away from a weak corner, a joint, or a damaged section of the desktop.
- Plan cable routing before tightening the base. The arm must be able to move without pulling a power or video cable.
Install a clamp mount without crushing the desktop
1. Set the clamp for the measured thickness
Some clamps have a threaded screw, a sliding lower plate, or separate positions for different desktop thicknesses. Configure it according to the manual instead of relying on how tight it feels. If the thickness is outside the stated range, choose another mounting method or another arm.

2. Position the upper base
Set the upper portion on a flat section of the desktop with enough room for the arm to rotate. Keep the base fully supported; do not let part of it bridge a rounded edge or a cable cutout. Check that the arm will not strike a wall or shelf when extended.
3. Seat the lower pressure surface
From underneath, align the lower plate or pad with the upper base. It should contact the underside fully and remain parallel to the desktop. An underside beam, apron, or drawer may prevent this. Do not use the tightening screw to pull a misaligned plate into place.
4. Tighten gradually
Turn the supplied handle or tool in small increments, alternating with checks from above and below. Secure means the base cannot slide or rock under normal use; it does not mean maximum force. Stop if the desktop bows, the finish marks, the pad slips, or the screw bottoms out before the plate is seated.
5. Test the unloaded base
Before attaching the monitor, gently push the base in several directions. It should stay fixed without twisting the desktop. If it moves, loosen it and diagnose the fit rather than simply tightening harder. A clamp that cannot achieve full, even contact is incompatible with that location.
Install a grommet mount carefully
1. Verify the hole and material
Measure the existing hole’s diameter and inspect its edge for cracks, splits, or crushed core material. Confirm that the arm’s bolt and plate fit through the hole and that the location leaves enough surrounding material to support the load. Also verify the desktop thickness against the exact grommet range.
2. Decide whether drilling is acceptable
Drilling changes the desk and prevents easy repositioning. Do not drill through tempered glass, a hollow section, or a hidden structural member unless the desk and arm manufacturers explicitly support that procedure. If permanence or material suitability is uncertain, use a clamp that the manual approves or a freestanding stand.
3. Drill only with approved dimensions
Use the hole diameter and placement specified by the arm maker. Protect the finished surface from chipping, keep the drill square, and clear dust before placing the hardware. A hole that is merely large enough for the bolt may still be wrong if the fixing plate cannot seat or the base can rotate.

4. Assemble the underside hardware
Place the specified plate, washer, and nut beneath the desktop in the order shown. Keep the base aligned while tightening. BenQ cautions against overtightening the grommet screw; follow the same principle for any model and stop once the base is secure and fully seated.

5. Check for rotation and edge damage
Apply light hand pressure to the base. It should not spin, rock, or pull the hole edge upward. If the material crushes or the hole enlarges, remove the mount and reassess the installation rather than adding force.
Attach the monitor safely
- Confirm the VESA pattern and use only the supplied or specified screws, washers, and spacers.
- Compare screw length with the monitor’s threaded depth. Stop if a screw meets unusual resistance; forcing it can damage internal components.
- Support the monitor’s weight while attaching the VESA plate. Do not let the display hang from one partially tightened screw.
- Engage the arm’s latch, lock, or retaining screw and verify that the plate is fully captured.
- Set spring or gas-arm tension in small steps. If the screen rises, falls, or drifts, make the adjustment specified by the manual instead of tightening the desk mount.
- Leave a loop of cable slack at every moving joint. Secure cables to the arm without pulling them tight when the screen is raised, lowered, or rotated.
Use extra caution with bamboo and other soft tops
A bamboo desktop may be strong overall but still dent where a small clamp pad concentrates force. Its finish can also mark under a slipping pad or grit trapped beneath the hardware. Treat bamboo like any other dent-prone surface: verify the arm’s approval, use the specified reinforcement plate, keep all contact surfaces clean, and tighten only enough to prevent movement. Do not assume that a thicker bamboo panel automatically supports every arm.
For a hollow-core desktop, locate internal rails or solid blocking if the desk maker provides that information. A clamp pressing on unsupported skin can crush the panel even when the nominal thickness appears to fit the arm.
How to judge a questionable desk location
Move the proposed base a few inches and measure again if the first location is close to a limit. A desktop may vary in thickness near a molded edge, a cable channel, or a seam. Likewise, a clamp can fit at the rear edge but fail where an underside drawer or apron begins. The usable location is the point where the upper base sits completely on the top, the lower plate sits completely on the underside, and the arm has its required rear and side clearance.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check the desk while it is in its normal position, not only while it is pulled away from the wall. A clamp that clears the wall during installation may press into it when the arm is rotated. Leave enough room for the monitor and cables to move through the intended range without striking shelves, partitions, or the wall.
Load is also dynamic. A monitor that is within the stated weight limit can still make an unstable desk rock when the arm is extended. Test the desk’s stability with the display supported and the arm in its farthest intended position. If the desktop twists or the whole desk walks, reduce the reach, move the base to a stronger location, or choose a freestanding arrangement rather than increasing clamp force.

Do not improvise around an out-of-range fit
Common shortcuts can turn a minor fit problem into permanent damage. Stacking loose washers to make up for a missing pressure plate, placing the clamp over a rounded corner, or tightening until a thin top visibly bows does not create a compliant installation. A generic board may spread pressure, but it does not prove that the board, clamp, and desktop can safely carry the monitor. Use an accessory identified for the arm or obtain written guidance from its maker.
Likewise, do not assume an existing cable-management hole is a universal grommet hole. The hole may be too large for the base to resist rotation, too close to the edge, or surrounded by a hollow section. Compare the hole diameter, tabletop thickness, underside plate, and bolt length with the exact instructions before committing the arm to that location.
Diagnose problems before they become damage
| Symptom | Likely cause | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| Clamp will not close within its range | Desktop too thick, too thin, tapered, or obstructed underneath | Re-measure and inspect the underside; do not force the screw. |
| Base rocks after tightening | Pressure plate is angled, a pad is missing, or the edge is rounded | Remove and reseat the hardware; move to an approved flat location. |
| Indentation appears | Excessive force or insufficient pressure distribution | Release the mount immediately and check whether a required plate is missing. |
| Grommet base rotates | Hole is oversized, hardware is in the wrong order, or the underside cannot seat | Disassemble and compare every part with the manual; do not enlarge the hole. |
| Monitor drops or rises | Arm tension does not match the actual display load | Support the display and adjust tension gradually; verify the load rating. |
| Cables pull when moving | Insufficient slack or clips routed across a moving joint | Release and reroute cables with a loop that follows the arm’s travel. |
After-installation checks and maintenance
Operate the arm slowly through every movement you expect to use: height adjustment, rotation, tilt, and extension. Watch the clamp and the desktop rather than focusing only on the screen. The pressure plate should remain centered, the base should not creep, and the desktop should not flex, whiten, or develop a new mark. If any of those changes appears, support the monitor, remove the load, and correct the mounting problem.
Recheck the base after the first day of use, after transporting or repositioning the desk, and whenever you add weight to the display. Cable clips can also change the force on a moving arm, so confirm that cables still have slack after the monitor is adjusted. Do not use a loose mount as a reason to increase tension at the desk; arm-tension adjustments and desk-base tightening solve different problems.
Final safety check
- The base uses an approved clamp, grommet, or freestanding configuration for the desk.
- All pressure surfaces are flat, centered, and fully seated.
- Required pads or reinforcement plates are installed.
- The desktop shows no cracking, whitening, bowing, or new indentation.
- The monitor’s weight and VESA pattern are within the arm’s limits.
- The VESA screws are correct and fully engaged without excessive force.
- The arm stays in position through its full intended range of motion.
- Cables remain slack and cannot snag or pull the display.
Recheck the base after the first day of use and after moving the desk. If the surface changes or the mount begins to loosen, remove the monitor before investigating.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I clamp a monitor arm to a bamboo desktop?
Possibly, but bamboo can dent where a small pad concentrates force. Confirm that the exact arm permits the desktop thickness and material, clean every contact surface, and install the specified pad or reinforcement plate. Do not assume a thick bamboo panel supports every arm.
Is a reinforcement plate required for a glass desk?
Some products require one. BenQ’s BSH02 quick-start guide says reinforcement plates are required for glass or fragile tabletops. That instruction applies to the named setup, not to every arm or every glass desk. Check both the arm and desk makers before mounting.

Can I use any existing cable hole for a grommet mount?
No. Measure its diameter, location, surrounding material, and desktop thickness against the exact arm manual. A hole can be too large, too close to an edge, or unable to accept the underside plate even when the bolt passes through.
Should I drill a new grommet hole?
Only when the desktop material and the arm maker’s instructions allow drilling, the dimensions and location are approved, and you accept a permanent fixed position. Do not drill simply to overcome an incompatible clamp or an uncertain material.
How tight should the clamp be?
Tight enough that the base cannot slide or rock under normal use, but not enough to bow, mark, crush, or whiten the desktop. Tighten gradually and stop if the pressure plate is not fully seated or the surface changes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if the clamp fits the thickness but the underside has a beam?
Move to a location where the lower plate can contact the underside fully and remain parallel to the desktop. Do not use the screw to pull a plate around an obstruction or force it against a rail.
Why does the monitor rise or sink after installation?
The arm’s spring or gas tension may not match the actual display load. Support the screen and adjust tension in small steps as directed. Do not tighten the desk clamp to correct an arm-tension problem.
What is the safest alternative when neither mount fits?
Use a freestanding stand if the desk has enough stable surface area. It avoids clamp pressure and drilling, though it consumes more workspace.
The Bottom Line
The safest installation is the one that matches the exact arm manual at every contact point. Measure the desk, verify the monitor load and VESA pattern, choose a clamp or grommet only when the geometry is approved, use the supplied protection, and tighten gradually. If the base cannot sit flat and secure without force, stop and choose a different location, mounting method, or freestanding stand.
