Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe safest clean installation is a short process only after you verify three things: the PC can run a supported Windows release, every needed file is backed up and readable, and you know which license and physical disk belong to the installation. A clean install erases the selected Windows disk, including personal files, applications, settings, and manufacturer customizations. Check those conditions first, then create Microsoft installation media on a blank USB drive, boot the used PC from it, remove partitions only from the intended system disk, install the matching edition, and confirm activation before restoring data.
Decide whether Windows 11 is the right target
For a used PC in 2026, start with Windows 11 eligibility rather than assuming that an older computer can take any installer. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft recommends moving compatible PCs to Windows 11; for incompatible devices it points consumers toward its Consumer Extended Security Updates program or replacing the device. Ordinary Windows 10 security support should not be treated as ongoing.

Minimum Windows 11 requirements
| Component | Microsoft minimum | What to verify on a used PC |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 1 GHz or faster, at least two cores, and on Microsoft’s approved CPU list | Check the exact processor model, not just its advertised clock speed. |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | Confirm installed memory in Windows or firmware; more memory may be needed for comfortable everyday use. |
| Storage | 64 GB | Check both capacity and whether the drive is healthy enough to trust with a new installation. |
| Firmware | UEFI with Secure Boot capability | Legacy-only firmware can prevent a supported installation. |
| Security chip | TPM 2.0 | Check the TPM state in Windows Security, firmware setup, or PC Health Check. |
Microsoft’s PC Health Check utility can assess eligibility. Use it on the existing installation before erasing anything. A PC’s age, manufacturer, or “Windows 10 ready” label does not prove that it meets the current Windows 11 CPU and security requirements.
If the computer fails the check
Do not present an unsupported Windows 11 installation as a normal supported path. Record which requirement failed and decide whether the Consumer Extended Security Updates option or a replacement computer makes sense. If you choose to keep the hardware, make that a deliberate risk decision: unsupported configurations can have missing features, uncertain driver behavior, and no guarantee that future updates will work. The supported route is to use hardware that passes Microsoft’s requirements.

Understand what a clean install removes
Microsoft Support says a clean installation removes personal files, apps, device-manufacturer customizations, and changes made in Settings. It is different from an in-place reinstall, which may preserve some data, applications, or settings depending on the path chosen. This guide uses the clean-install route because it gives the used PC a genuinely fresh system, but it also means there is no undo button for an unbacked-up file.
When a clean install is appropriate
- You are taking ownership of a PC and want to remove the previous owner’s software and settings.
- The existing Windows installation is damaged, unstable, or filled with unwanted programs.
- You have verified that all required files, browser data, license records, and game saves exist somewhere outside the target disk.
- You are prepared to reinstall applications and configure the machine again.
When to pause instead
- The computer contains files you have not opened from a backup.
- You cannot identify the Windows disk with confidence.
- The seller has not clarified whether a transferable Windows license is included.
- The machine fails Windows 11 eligibility and you have not decided how to handle its post-Windows-10-support status.
Confirm the edition and license before erasing anything
Activation is tied to the Windows edition as well as the device and license history. While the old installation still boots, record its edition (for example, Home or Pro) and activation state. In Windows, open Settings > System > Activation and note the edition and whether Windows reports a digital license. If the PC was bought secondhand, ask the seller for any license documentation; do not assume that a product key automatically transfers.
Digital license linked to an account
A digital license may reactivate the same edition after reinstalling. If it is linked to a Microsoft account, sign in with that account after setup. The account must be the one associated with the license; creating a different account during installation does not move ownership of a license.
Product keys and edition mismatches
Use the edition covered by the existing digital license or product key. If Setup asks for a key and you have a valid same-edition digital license, select I don’t have a product key; Windows can reactivate online after installation. Installing Pro on a device licensed for Home generally requires a valid Pro key. A pre-owned PC may fail activation if its seller reused a key on more devices than permitted, so activation cannot be guaranteed merely because Windows was activated when you bought the computer.
If no valid license exists
You may need a genuine Windows 11 digital license purchased through Microsoft’s Store or an authorized seller. Do not rely on inexpensive keys of uncertain origin. Keep proof of purchase and match the purchased edition to the edition you install.
Back up files and records you need to keep
Back up before creating or booting the installer. Microsoft identifies an external hard drive, USB storage, or a cloud location as possible destinations. Choose a destination you can actually open from another device, not merely one that reports a completed copy.
Use a backup checklist
- Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Pictures, Videos, and any custom folders.
- Browser bookmarks, saved-password export if your password manager supports it, and recovery codes for important accounts.
- Mail archives, local contacts, tax or business files, and application project folders.
- Game saves that are not synchronized to a cloud service.
- License keys, installer files, and configuration files for software you plan to reinstall.
- Device encryption recovery keys and any two-factor authentication backup codes.
Verify the backup
- Open several copied files directly from the backup destination.
- Check that large folders have plausible file counts and sizes.
- Sign in to the cloud service or connect the backup drive from another computer to prove access.
- Keep the backup drive disconnected while deleting partitions if you are unsure which physical disk is which. This is a safety precaution, not a Microsoft requirement.
Create official Windows installation media
Use Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool on a separate working computer. Microsoft specifies a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of space. Creating the media deletes the USB drive’s existing contents, so copy anything important off it first. An “8GB USB flash drive” is sufficient for the stated minimum, although a larger drive is acceptable if it is blank.
Prepare the USB drive
- Use a reliable USB flash drive with at least 8 GB available.
- Move any files on it to another location.
- On the working computer, download the current Windows installation-media tool from Microsoft’s official Windows download page.
- Run the tool as an administrator if Windows requests permission.
- Accept the license terms, choose the option to create installation media for another PC, and continue.
- Leave the recommended language and architecture selected unless you have a specific, documented reason to change them.
- Select USB flash drive, choose the correct removable drive, and confirm that it may be erased.
- Wait for the download and write process to finish, then safely eject the USB.
The tool creates bootable media; it does not preserve files already on the USB. If the tool reports insufficient space, use a blank drive meeting the 8 GB minimum rather than deleting random files while the process is running.

Prepare the used PC for installation
Disconnect unnecessary hardware
Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and installer USB attached. Disconnect external storage and, where practical, secondary internal data drives that you do not intend to erase. Fewer attached disks make it harder to select the wrong target in Setup.
Find the manufacturer’s boot instructions
Boot-menu keys and firmware screens vary by manufacturer and model. Look up the PC maker’s instructions for entering the one-time boot menu and UEFI setup; there is no universal key that works on every used PC. You may need to enable UEFI mode or Secure Boot for a supported Windows 11 installation. Do not change storage-controller settings casually, because switching modes can make an existing installation or recovery environment inaccessible.
Start from the USB
- Insert the installation USB into the powered-off PC.
- Turn it on and use the manufacturer-specific boot-menu method.
- Select the USB device, choosing its UEFI entry when two entries appear.
- Wait for Windows Setup to load. If the PC skips the USB, revisit the boot order or recreate the media on a different blank drive.
Perform the clean installation without deleting the wrong disk
This is the irreversible part. Microsoft’s clean-install example deletes partitions only on Disk 0, the intended system drive, until that disk shows as unallocated space. Disk numbering and sizes can differ on your machine, so treat “Disk 0” as Microsoft’s example rather than a guarantee that your target is always Disk 0.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Identify the target system drive
- Compare the capacity shown in Setup with the physical drive you intend to replace.
- Use the number and size of attached drives, not a partition label alone.
- If two drives have similar capacities and you remain uncertain, cancel Setup and disconnect the non-target drive before trying again.
- Never delete partitions on a disk that contains your backup or files you intend to retain.
Delete only the target disk’s partitions
- At the Windows Setup screen, choose the language, time, and keyboard settings, then select Install now.
- Enter a product key when prompted, or select I don’t have a product key if a same-edition digital license will be used.
- Select the Windows edition that matches the license you recorded.
- Accept the license terms and choose Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).
- Review every listed disk and partition. Confirm the target by its capacity and your earlier hardware check.
- On the intended system disk only, select each partition and choose Delete, confirming each warning, until that disk is a single block of unallocated space.
- Do not delete, format, or modify partitions on any other disk.
- Select the unallocated space on the target disk and choose Next.
- Let Setup create the required system partitions and copy files. The PC may restart several times; remove the USB only when the machine begins booting from the new installation, or select the internal drive if a boot prompt appears.
If you accidentally reach the partition screen without being able to distinguish the disks, stop. A short delay is safer than guessing. Power down, label or disconnect drives, and restart Setup.
Complete first-run setup and check activation
Finish Windows setup
Choose the region and keyboard layout, connect to the internet when prompted, and create or sign in to the account you intend to use. Apply privacy and diagnostic choices deliberately rather than clicking through them without reading. A network connection helps Windows retrieve activation information and updates, although the exact screens can vary by edition and release.
Verify activation before restoring data
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Confirm that the installed edition is the one you licensed.
- Check that Windows reports activation, ideally with a digital license linked to the intended Microsoft account.
- If activation fails, record the displayed error before changing hardware or reinstalling.
For a same-edition digital license, sign in to the linked account and run the Activation troubleshooter if Windows offers it. If the account, edition, or key does not match, the troubleshooter cannot create a license that you do not own. Contact the seller for documentation or obtain a genuine license when appropriate.
Install updates and device drivers in a safe order
- Run Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates and restart as required.
- Repeat the check until no important updates remain.
- Open Device Manager and look for unknown devices or warning icons.
- Download model-specific drivers from the PC manufacturer’s support site, starting with chipset, storage, network, graphics, audio, and firmware packages that match the exact model and Windows edition.
- Restart after significant driver or firmware updates and verify that networking, display resolution, audio, sleep, Bluetooth, and external ports work.
- Install applications from their current official sources, then restore personal files from the verified backup.
There is no universal driver package for every used PC. Model, firmware, and component variations determine what is needed; Windows Update may supply many drivers, but an unknown device still requires identification before downloading a replacement.
Common problems and recovery paths
The PC will not boot from the USB
- Recheck the manufacturer’s boot-menu procedure.
- Try the USB’s UEFI entry rather than a legacy entry.
- Recreate the installer on a different blank USB drive.
- Confirm that firmware settings meet Windows 11 requirements, including UEFI and Secure Boot capability.
Setup cannot find the internal drive
The storage controller may require a model-specific driver, or the drive may be failing. Check firmware detection first. Do not randomly switch controller modes; obtain the correct storage driver from the manufacturer and preserve any remaining data before continuing.

Activation fails after installation
- Check that Home and Pro were not mixed up.
- Connect to the internet and sign in with the account linked to the digital license.
- Run the Activation troubleshooter and keep the error code.
- Ask the seller for license evidence if the PC was pre-owned.
- Consider a genuine license only after confirming that the device does not already have a valid one.
The wrong partition was selected
Stop immediately if you notice before deletion. If data has already been deleted, shut down and avoid writing new files to that disk; professional data-recovery advice may be needed. A backup is the dependable recovery method, which is why verification before Setup matters.
Choose the right installation route
| Route | What it does | Best use | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clean installation from USB | Replaces the selected Windows installation and removes files, apps, settings, and manufacturer customizations on that target | Removing a previous owner’s environment or starting over with a damaged system | Permanent loss of anything not backed up; wrong-disk deletion |
| In-place reinstall or reset | May retain some files, apps, or settings depending on the chosen option | Troubleshooting when preserving the current environment matters | Old problems, unwanted software, or ownership traces may remain |
| Replace or upgrade the PC | Moves to hardware that meets current supported requirements | Hardware fails Windows 11 checks or has an unreliable drive | Additional cost and migration work |
For this title’s “fresh copy” goal, the USB clean install is the clearest route, provided the PC passes eligibility checks and the backup and license decisions are settled first.
Final pre-install and post-install checklists
Before deleting anything
- Windows 11 eligibility checked with PC Health Check or the published requirements.
- Windows 10’s October 14, 2025 end-of-support date understood.
- Edition and activation state recorded.
- License account or product-key evidence available.
- Backup opened and verified from another location.
- Blank USB with at least 8 GB prepared; its contents may be erased.
- Target disk identified by capacity and other disks disconnected if uncertain.
- Manufacturer boot and firmware instructions located.
After Windows starts
- Correct edition installed and activation confirmed.
- Windows Update completed.
- Unknown devices investigated in Device Manager.
- Manufacturer-specific drivers installed where required.
- Network, graphics, audio, sleep, Bluetooth, and ports tested.
- Applications reinstalled from legitimate sources.
- Files restored only from the verified backup.
- A new backup schedule created so the next reinstall is less risky.
The practical answer
Install Windows 11 only when the used PC passes Microsoft’s hardware requirements and you can identify a same-edition license. Back up first, create official media on a blank 8 GB-or-larger USB, boot through the manufacturer’s documented UEFI path, and delete partitions only from the disk you have positively identified as the system drive. Finish by checking activation, updates, and drivers before putting the computer back into service. If eligibility, licensing, or disk identity is uncertain, pause rather than turning a clean install into permanent data loss or an unsupported setup.

Can I install Windows 11 on any used PC that previously ran Windows 10?
No. Use PC Health Check and verify the processor list, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, UEFI with Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0. A Windows 10 installation does not prove Windows 11 eligibility.
Will a clean install delete files on every drive?
It deletes the partitions you select. In Setup, remove partitions only from the intended system disk; leave other disks untouched and disconnect them if you cannot identify them confidently.
Do I need to buy Windows again?
Not necessarily. A same-edition digital license may reactivate after you sign in to its linked Microsoft account. A mismatched, missing, or reused key may require a genuine license.
What size USB drive is required?
Microsoft specifies a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB. Creating installation media erases its existing contents.
