To install a custom car on an Assetto Corsa server, upload the mod’s original ZIP, RAR, or 7Z archive without changing its internal folders, add the detected car to the server’s active entry list, assign skins and slots, select a compatible track, apply the configuration, and restart. Every driver must install the identical car release locally. A different archive version, altered skin folder, missing file, or incompatible dependency can produce a checksum error even when the car has the same displayed name.

What has to match before anyone can join
Assetto Corsa validates the content used by the server and each client. The server does not merely need a car with the right name; it needs the same model folder, data files, skins, and release that players have installed. Keep a record of the exact archive and release used for the server so every driver can reproduce it.

- Client files: the same archive installed in Assetto Corsa or Content Manager before joining.
- Entry-list configuration: the car model and skin must be assigned to an available entry.
- Track: the selected layout must exist on both server and clients.
- Dependencies: any required Custom Shaders Patch (CSP) version, paid downloadable content, or other component must be available to the player.
Content Manager’s automatic download feature can help a player obtain a missing archive, but it cannot make two different releases compatible, repair an incomplete download, or supply DLC the player does not own.
Choose how you will run the server
There are two practical approaches: a self-managed server using AssettoServer, or a managed hosting panel that handles uploads and server controls for you. AssettoServer is an open-source custom game server for Assetto Corsa developed with freeroam in mind. Its introduction, updated March 23, 2026, documents Windows and Linux packages and warns against extracting it into the main Assetto Corsa installation because of Steam SDK conflicts.

AssettoServer installation modes
For a dedicated AssettoServer setup, create the server configuration in Content Manager, click Pack, and extract the resulting archive into the server root. If you are integrating AssettoServer with Content Manager, rename the original acServer.exe, place AssettoServer in the server directory, and rename AssettoServer.exe to acServer.exe. Keep the server outside the main Assetto Corsa folder as recommended by the AssettoServer documentation.
Prepare and verify the custom-car archive
Use the author’s original release
Download the car from the author-provided source and retain the original ZIP, RAR, or 7Z file. Do not rename, delete, or rearrange files inside the archive. A car can appear correctly in a file browser while still being incomplete if a data folder, collider, sound bank, or skin directory was omitted.

- Save the archive with a filename that identifies the car and release.
- Record the release or version shown by the author and, when applicable, the version shown in Content Manager’s Author field.
- Open the archive and check that it contains the expected car folder rather than an extra wrapper folder created by an incorrect extraction.
- If the archive will not open, extraction reports errors, or the car is missing files, download it again from the author before changing server settings.
- Install the same untouched archive on a test client and confirm that the car loads in a practice session.
Do not redistribute an author’s archive unless the author permits it. The AssettoServer FAQ specifically advises using download links supplied by the content authors unless you are explicitly allowed to re-upload the files.
Install the car with a managed hosting panel
Panel labels differ slightly between providers, but the workflow documented by Assetto Servers is consistent.
- Open the server’s Content area. Use the panel’s content-management page rather than uploading into an arbitrary file directory.
- Upload the original archive. Select the ZIP, RAR, or 7Z file exactly as downloaded. Do not extract it locally and repackage it unless the provider explicitly requires that.
- Wait for metadata processing. The panel must inspect the archive before the car appears in its picker. Leave the page open until processing finishes and the car count increases.
- Add the model to the active list. Select the recognized car and move it into Current Entry List.
- Assign entries and skins. Set enough player entries for the expected grid and select a skin for each entry. A car uploaded to the server but absent from the active list is not available in a race.
- Select the track and layout. Choose a track that is installed on the server and on every client. A configuration with cars but no track cannot be applied successfully.
- Click Apply Selection. Wait for the panel to finish writing the entry list and track configuration.
- Restart the server. A restart loads the newly applied content and clears an older in-memory car list.
- Test from a client. Join with the same archive installed locally and verify that the car loads before inviting other drivers.
Why the car may not appear immediately
Archive processing is asynchronous. If the picker remains unchanged, wait for processing to finish and verify that the uploaded file is a valid ZIP, RAR, or 7Z archive with its original structure. Uploading a second copy before the first finishes can leave you unsure which release the panel recognized.

Install the car on a self-managed AssettoServer
Copy the files to the correct directory
Place the car in the server’s content/cars directory. Preserve the mod’s expected folder name and all of its files. The folder name is significant: it is the value the server uses as the model identifier, not necessarily the marketing name shown in a launcher.
After copying, check that the car folder is directly inside content/cars and not nested one level deeper. A common mistake is ending up with content/cars/car-name/car-name/ after extracting an archive that already contains a top-level folder.
Reference the model and skin in entry_list.ini
AssettoServer uses cfg/entry_list.ini for car models, skins, and entry-related settings. A basic entry identifies the folder names:

SKIN=skin_folder_nameUse the exact model folder and skin folder names from the installed archive. Keep entry indices contiguous, such as ENTRY_0, ENTRY_1, and ENTRY_2; do not leave unexplained gaps. Add the remaining settings required by your server configuration, including any AI-slot options you use.
Confirm the track and restart
The selected track and layout must also exist in the server’s content/tracks directory. Once the car and track are present, save the configuration, start or restart AssettoServer, and inspect the server log for content-loading errors before asking players to connect.

Synchronize every player’s installation
Give drivers the same author-provided archive used on the server. Installing a similarly named car from another release is not sufficient. The server guide documents checksum errors caused by different car versions even when the display name is identical.
- Compare the archive filename, release number, and download source.
- Compare the extracted model folder, data files, sound files, and skin folders.
- Check whether the author specifies a CSP requirement and make sure the client meets it.
- Remove older copies that use the same model folder before installing the confirmed release.
- Make sure the client owns any required Assetto Corsa DLC for the selected car or track.
When a driver receives a checksum error, reinstall the exact server archive on both sides instead of trying to solve the problem by changing the entry-list name. A name change does not alter the files being checked.
Set up Content Manager missing-content downloads
AssettoServer can advertise download links through cfg/cm_content/content.json. This is optional: the server works without it, provided every player installs the required content manually.
Self-managed manifest requirements
The manifest contains download URLs for cars and tracks and can include an optional version value. When you provide a version, use the value shown in Content Manager’s Author field. Omit the version when the mod does not publish one. Set EnableServerDetails: true in extra_cfg.yml so the relevant server details are exposed.

Use the direct links supplied by the content author. Do not mirror an archive to another host unless the author has granted permission. A valid manifest cannot compensate for a removed source file, an incomplete archive, or a URL that points to a different release.

Managed-panel CM Auto Download
Assetto Servers documents CM Auto Download as a feature available on paid Assetto Corsa hosting plans. The panel workflow is:
- Ensure at least one car is in the active entry list.
- Select a track and layout.
- Enable CM Auto Download.
- Click Apply Selection.
- Inspect
cfg/cm_content/content.jsonto confirm that the car and track links were written. - Restart the server.
- From a computer that does not already contain the mod, test the server’s Join in CM link.
Rebuild the manifest after changing a car archive, active car list, track, layout, or source URL. Otherwise Content Manager may continue offering an old link or version.
Understand CSP, Content Manager, and DLC dependencies
These are conditional requirements, not universal prerequisites for every basic custom-car server. AssettoServer’s documented Steam-authentication path requires CSP 0.1.75 or newer and Content Manager 0.8.2297.38573 or newer. Its dynamic WeatherFX features require CSP 0.1.76 or newer. If you do not enable those features, do not present their versions as a blanket requirement for installing a car.
A mod can also depend on a specific CSP feature, an original-game car, or a track supplied through paid DLC. Check the author’s installation notes and make sure each player owns the required DLC; a download manifest cannot bypass ownership checks.
Troubleshoot installation and joining failures
The car is missing from the picker
- Wait until archive metadata processing has completed.
- Confirm the upload is a valid ZIP, RAR, or 7Z file.
- Verify that the archive retained its original internal structure.
- Check that the panel’s car count increased after processing.
- On a self-managed server, confirm the model folder is directly under
content/cars.
Apply Selection fails
Select at least one car and a track, finish all uploads, and apply again. A panel cannot construct a usable race configuration when the active list or track selection is empty.
The old car list is still displayed
Apply the current selection and restart the server. The running process may still be using the previous entry list even though the panel shows newer choices.

Reinstall the exact same archive on the server and every affected client. Compare skins and release versions, not just the visible car name. Auto-download only retrieves the advertised file; it does not reconcile different releases.
A player cannot join
- Confirm that an entry slot is available.
- Compare the player’s car archive, model folder, skins, and release with the server.
- Check the player’s CSP version against any requirement published by the mod.
- Verify that the selected track and layout are installed locally.
- Check DLC ownership if the content depends on an original-game pack.
The Content Manager download link fails
Open the source URL independently and confirm that the archive is still available and complete. Then regenerate content.json after correcting the URL. If the author has replaced the archive, update the version value and tell existing players to remove the old release before installing the new one.
The server starts but the car will not load
Review the server log for a missing data, sound, or physics file. Re-download the author’s archive and replace the server copy rather than filling individual files from unrelated releases. Mixed releases can create a new checksum mismatch even if the car initially appears in the list.
Safe update and rollback procedure
Treat every mod update as a new release. Before replacing a working car, save the current archive, entry list, track selection, and manifest. Upload the new archive, verify that its model folder and skins are intentional, and test it with one client. Only then change the active list for the wider server.

- Update the active entries and any CM download URL or version value.
- Apply the configuration and restart.
- Test a join from a client with no cached copy of the old release.
- If the update fails, restore the backup and regenerate the manifest for the restored release.
Pre-launch checklist
- The server and clients use the identical archive release.
- The archive’s internal folder structure is unchanged.
- The car is in
content/carsand appears in the active entry list. - Every entry has a valid model and skin, with enough slots for the intended grid.
- The selected track and layout are installed on server and clients.
- Required CSP, Content Manager, and DLC dependencies are documented and met.
cfg/cm_content/content.jsoncontains current, author-approved links if auto-download is enabled.- The server has been restarted after applying the selection.
- A clean client has completed a test join.
What to do when you change cars later
Changing the car, skin set, track, layout, archive, or download source is a configuration change, not merely a file upload. Update the active entry list, apply the selection, restart the server, and rebuild the Content Manager manifest when one is enabled. Tell drivers which release is now authoritative so they do not continue joining with an older folder that happens to have the same display name.
