To add a 2.5-inch SATA SSD as a secondary drive, shut down and unplug the desktop, mount the SSD in a suitable bay or adapter bracket, connect a SATA data cable to an available motherboard SATA port, connect SATA power from the power supply, then initialize and format the new disk in the operating system if prompted.

This procedure adds storage for files, games, projects, or backups. It does not install Windows, move the existing operating system, or clone your boot drive. Bay locations, SATA ports, power plugs, and port-sharing rules vary by desktop, so use the computer, case, and motherboard manuals for model-specific details.

Check what you need before opening the case

Do not assume a desktop has every connection required. Verify the following items first. Kingston’s installation guide and KIOXIA’s quick-start guide both stress checking the system layout and available connections before beginning: Kingston’s 2.5-inch SSD installation guide and KIOXIA’s SATA SSD Quick Start Guide.

Item What to verify What happens if it is missing
2.5-inch SATA SSD It is a 2.5-inch drive with SATA data and SATA power connectors. The standard internal installation described here will not apply to an M.2 or external-only drive.
SATA data cable There is a spare cable, or you have a compatible one ready. The SSD cannot communicate with the motherboard.
SATA motherboard port An unused, enabled port is available. Check the motherboard manual for shared or disabled ports. There is nowhere to connect the data cable, or another device may be affected by port sharing.
SATA power plug The power supply has an unused SATA power connector that can reach the mounting location. The SSD cannot power on.
Mounting point The case has a 2.5-inch bay, or room for a suitable 2.5-inch-to-3.5-inch adapter bracket. The drive may not be secured safely inside the case.
Tools or mounting hardware Have the screwdriver specified by the case manual, or confirm that the case uses tool-less rails or trays. You may be unable to secure the SSD without forcing parts.

Inspect the inside of the case and read its manual before buying accessories. A spare SATA data cable, a SATA power lead, or a free bay may be hidden behind the motherboard tray, while some compact desktops use proprietary brackets or trays.

Understand the two connections the SSD needs

A 2.5-inch SATA SSD requires two separate connections:

Connection Connects from Purpose
SATA data The SSD to an available SATA port on the motherboard Carries data between the drive and the computer
SATA power The power supply unit to the SSD Supplies electrical power so the drive can operate

The plugs are shaped to fit only one way. Kingston advises that the connectors should slide in without forcing them. If a plug does not align easily, stop, check its orientation, and make sure you are using the correct connector rather than pushing harder.

Check SATA speed and motherboard compatibility

SATA generations are compatible with one another, but the connection runs at the speed of the slower interface. KIOXIA states that SATA 6Gbit/s is backward compatible with SATA 3Gbit/s; connecting a SATA 6Gbit/s device to a SATA 3Gbit/s connection results in reduced performance. Read the motherboard manual to identify the port generation and any restrictions on which ports can be used.

A free physical port is not always an available logical port. Some motherboards share SATA ports with other storage controllers or disable particular ports when another connector is populated. Do not copy a port-sharing assumption from a different motherboard model. Use the documentation for your exact board.

Install the SSD inside the desktop

Follow this sequence for the physical installation. The case manual takes precedence if its panel-release method, tray orientation, or mounting screws differs.

  1. Shut down completely. Use the operating system’s normal shutdown command, wait until the computer is off, and disconnect the desktop’s power cable. Disconnect other external cables if they prevent you from moving the case safely. KIOXIA’s guide specifically instructs users to shut down and disconnect power before opening the system.
  2. Prepare a safe work area. Place the case on a stable surface with enough room to remove the side panel. Avoid working where the case can fall or where loose screws can enter the power supply. Touch the unpainted metal chassis before handling the SSD, and hold the drive by its edges rather than the circuit board.
  3. Remove the case panel according to the manual. Desktop designs use thumbscrews, rear screws, latches, or sliding panels. Do not pry a panel that is still secured. Set removed screws aside so they are not confused with drive-mounting screws.
  4. Locate a 2.5-inch mounting position. Look for a tray, caddy, or threaded holes marked for 2.5-inch drives. If the case has no 2.5-inch position, use a 2.5-inch-to-3.5-inch adapter bracket that fits the case’s existing 3.5-inch bay, as specified in the KIOXIA guide. Do not leave the SSD loose inside the case.
  5. Secure the SSD. Align the drive’s mounting holes with the tray or bracket and install the supplied screws or tool-less hardware. Tighten until secure, but do not overtighten or force a misaligned screw. Leave enough clearance for the SATA data and power plugs to seat without sharp bends.
  6. Connect the SATA data cable. Insert one end into the SSD’s data connector and the other into the selected motherboard SATA port. Route the cable so it cannot touch a fan blade or become pinched when the panel is replaced. If the board labels ports by number, note which one you used.
  7. Connect SATA power. Attach an available SATA power connector from the power supply to the SSD. The power connector is wider than the data connector and also fits in only one orientation. Ensure it is fully seated without forcing it.
  8. Inspect before closing the case. Confirm that the SSD is fixed in place, both connectors are seated, no cable is trapped under the drive or a fan, and no loose screw remains inside the case.
  9. Replace the panel and reconnect the computer. Reinstall the side panel, reconnect the desktop’s power cable and external devices, then start the computer. The first start confirms that the hardware installation is complete; the operating system may still need to initialize and format the disk.

Initialize and format the new secondary disk

A newly installed SSD can be electrically connected and still be unavailable for saving files. KIOXIA explains that a secondary SSD may need initialization and formatting before use. In Windows, the general tool for this is Disk Management, although labels and prompts vary between Windows versions.

  1. Open the operating system’s disk-management utility. Use the Windows search function to find Disk Management, or follow the storage-management path documented for your Windows version.
  2. Identify the newly installed disk by capacity and model. Compare the disk’s displayed size and model with the SSD you installed. Do not select the existing boot disk merely because it appears first in the list.
  3. Respond to an initialization prompt only for the new SSD. If Windows asks to initialize a disk, verify its capacity and model before accepting. If the disk contains files from another computer, stop and investigate rather than initializing it.
  4. Create a volume and format it when appropriate. Select only unallocated space on the new SSD and follow the utility’s procedure to create a usable volume and file system. The exact screen names can differ by Windows release.
  5. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not disconnect the drive or shut down while the disk-management operation is in progress. When the volume is available, open it and create a small test folder or copy a noncritical file.

Formatting is destructive when it is applied to a disk containing data. KIOXIA warns: “Reformatting the Product may cause all the data stored in the Product to be lost or corrupted. Ensure the Product contains no necessary data or files before reformatting.” Read the disk identity and capacity twice before confirming any initialization, partition, or format action. If you expected files to be present, cancel the operation and determine why they are not being shown.

Keep the second-drive task separate from a boot-drive upgrade

This guide treats the SSD as a data drive. It does not cover installing an operating system, cloning an existing boot disk, changing boot order, or replacing the original system drive. Those tasks require a different procedure and additional decisions about recovery media, partitions, boot firmware, and data migration.

After setup, leave the original system drive connected as before and use the new SSD for the files or applications you intentionally place there. If the computer starts normally but the new disk is absent from File Explorer, return to Disk Management and check whether it is merely uninitialized or unformatted before changing any hardware.

Troubleshoot an SSD that does not appear

Work from the simplest, least destructive checks to more invasive ones. Kingston’s support guidance recommends checking power and data connections and trying another cable or SATA port. KIOXIA also identifies initialization and formatting as possible first-use requirements.

Symptom Likely explanation Action
The SSD is absent everywhere A SATA power or data connection is loose, the cable is faulty, or the selected motherboard port is unavailable. Shut down and unplug the PC. Reseat both connections, then try a known-good SATA data cable or another motherboard SATA port. Check the board manual for shared or disabled ports.
The drive is visible in disk management but not usable in File Explorer The drive may be uninitialized, unallocated, or unformatted. Confirm the disk by capacity and model, then initialize, create a volume, and format it only if it contains no needed data.
The computer starts, but the new SSD is not listed after adding it The operating system may not have refreshed its disk list, or the hardware connection is incomplete. Open the disk-management utility and look for the SSD. If it is not listed there, power down and inspect the cables and port.
The SSD works on one port but not another The original port may be shared, disabled, or reserved by the motherboard design. Use the working port and consult the exact motherboard manual before changing other storage connections.
The SSD is detected but performance is lower than expected It may be connected through a SATA 3Gbit/s port or another slower link. Check the port specification in the motherboard manual. SATA 6Gbit/s devices operate over SATA 3Gbit/s, but the slower link reduces performance.
The drive cannot be mounted securely The case lacks a 2.5-inch bay or the bracket does not match the case. Use a case-compatible 2.5-inch-to-3.5-inch adapter bracket, or follow the case manufacturer’s mounting solution. Do not operate with the SSD loose.

If the SSD still does not appear after testing its power, data cable, and motherboard port, stop before formatting or repeatedly reconnecting it. Confirm the drive’s model and connections using the component documentation and, if available, test the cable and port with another known-good SATA device.

Cases that require a different preparation

No 2.5-inch bay

Many towers include dedicated 2.5-inch mounting holes, but some provide only 3.5-inch drive cages. In that situation, install the SSD in a compatible 2.5-inch-to-3.5-inch adapter bracket and secure the bracket in the 3.5-inch bay. The bracket is a mounting solution, not an electrical adapter; the SSD still needs its own SATA data and SATA power connections.

No spare SATA data port

Do not disconnect an existing drive simply to test the new SSD unless you understand which drive it is and have a recovery plan. Check the motherboard diagram for unused ports, port sharing, and connectors disabled by other onboard devices. If every usable port is occupied, the standard internal installation cannot proceed without changing the storage layout or adding compatible hardware, which is outside this basic second-drive procedure.

No spare SATA power connector

Verify the power supply’s available leads before mounting the drive. A data cable alone cannot power an SSD. If no suitable SATA power plug can reach the bay, consult the power-supply and case documentation for a compatible solution rather than forcing or modifying a connector.

Very compact or proprietary desktop

Small-form-factor and prebuilt systems can use custom trays, short cables, or restricted mounting locations. Follow the model-specific service manual, and do not assume that a full-size tower bracket or cable route will fit. The physical sequence remains the same—secure the drive, connect data, connect power—but the hardware used to achieve it may be unique to the system.

Final verification checklist

  • The SSD is firmly secured in a 2.5-inch bay or compatible adapter bracket.
  • One SATA data cable runs from the SSD to an available motherboard SATA port.
  • One SATA power connector from the power supply is fully seated in the SSD.
  • No cable touches a fan, blocks ventilation, or is pinched by the case panel.
  • The computer starts with the original boot drive unchanged.
  • The operating system identifies the new disk by its expected capacity and model.
  • Initialization and formatting were performed only on the intended, empty SSD.
  • A test folder or noncritical file can be created on the new volume.
