If the live website is available, inspect its CSS and computed styles first: they can reveal the colors the page actually uses. If you have only a screenshot, sample broad, flat areas with an eyedropper and treat each result as an estimate of the displayed pixel—not proof of the original CSS value. Then organize the colors by role, rebuild them as reusable CSS variables, and check text contrast.
Choose the right evidence: live page or screenshot
A live page and a screenshot answer different questions. Inspecting the live page can show a color declared in CSS or the computed color applied to a particular element. Sampling a screenshot tells you the color of a pixel as displayed in that image. That pixel may have been altered by transparency, shadows, antialiasing, image compression, or color-space conversion.

| Evidence | What it can tell you | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Live page and browser DevTools | The selected element’s styles and computed color; potentially related CSS custom properties and other stylesheet colors. | A palette of stylesheet colors is a set of candidates. It does not identify which values are the site’s primary colors or what role each one serves. |
| Screenshot and eyedropper | The sampled displayed pixel color at a chosen location. | It does not establish the original CSS value. The pixel can be a blend or edge-rendering result, and browser color sampling has color-space limitations. |
When you have both sources, use the screenshot as a visual reference and inspect the corresponding live elements for stronger evidence about their CSS colors. Chrome documents its Inspect mode and Color Picker; Firefox also documents tools for inspecting and selecting colors.

Select the element whose color you want
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools. Choose the element-inspection control, then select the text, button, background, or other element on the page. Chrome’s Inspect mode can help analyze element properties.
- In the Styles view, look for color-related declarations such as
color,background-color,border-color, andfill. The relevant property depends on the element. - Check the Computed view for the color that applies after the browser resolves the element’s styles. Use this when several declarations, inherited styles, or variables make the final value unclear.
- If a declaration uses a CSS custom property, follow the variable to its definition. Record the resulting value alongside the element and its visual role.
Chrome’s Color Picker can expose a page-color palette drawn from colors found in stylesheets, as well as a palette of CSS variables. Use these to find candidates, then trace a candidate to the element and declaration that use it. The palette alone does not label a color as a brand, background, or action color.

Record the value and its context
For each useful color, note the element, the property, the value shown in DevTools, and the role it appears to serve. This makes it easier to distinguish, for example, a button’s fill from its text color or a card’s surface from the page background. The role is your reconstruction label; the original site may use a different naming system.
Sample colors from a screenshot
Pick clean, representative pixels
- Open the screenshot in an image editor or other tool with an eyedropper.
- Choose a broad, flat section well inside the region you want to identify, such as the middle of a solid background or button.
- Sample several nearby pixels if the area appears uniform. If results vary slightly, the variation may come from rendering or image processing rather than distinct design colors.
- Record the selected color in a consistent format, such as a hex value, together with the location and the role you think it serves.
Avoid sampling letter edges, thin borders, shadows, gradients, and translucent overlays when trying to estimate a base fill. Pixels in those places can mix neighboring colors or represent an effect rather than the underlying color. Chrome for Developers says its eyedropper samples only in the sRGB color space and clips colors outside that space to the closest value. That describes Chrome’s tool, not every browser’s implementation; it is another reason not to treat a sampled value as definitive proof of the source CSS.
Keep estimates separate from known CSS values
Mark screenshot-derived values as estimates and live-page values as inspected CSS or computed values. If the site is unavailable, you can still build a close visual reconstruction, but the screenshot alone cannot confirm the original authored color. Keep uncertain colors provisional until you can compare a rendered version against the reference.

Turn samples into a role-based palette
Start with a compact inventory of functional roles rather than a long list of unrelated hex codes. A practical set might include:
- Page background
- Surface or card
- Primary text
- Muted text
- Primary action
- Border
- Accent
These labels are a working method for rebuilding the design, not a claim about the original site’s internal tokens. If two samples are nearly identical, compare their context before keeping both. A small difference caused by antialiasing or sampling position may not justify another palette entry; a difference tied to a real component or state may.
Implement the palette with CSS variables
Define each chosen color once, then reference it wherever that role appears. For example, replace the illustrative values below with values you inspected or sampled; none of the example values represents a color from the reference site.

Apply a variable according to the role it represents, then compare the rendered page with the screenshot. If a region looks wrong, check whether the mismatch comes from the chosen color or from a different cause—such as opacity, gradient, shadow, image, or component state—before adding another token.

Evaluate actual foreground and background pairs rather than judging whether the palette looks harmonious. WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.3 specifies a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large text, with exceptions including inactive controls, purely decorative text, and logotypes. These thresholds address text contrast under that criterion; they do not by themselves establish that a design meets every accessibility need. See the W3C’s Understanding Contrast (Minimum) for the criterion and its exceptions.
When evaluating text, use the underlying specified foreground and background colors. W3C notes that antialiasing can make the pixels at glyph edges appear fainter than the CSS colors. Do not round a failing result up to the threshold.

If you need a screenshot of a live page as a reference, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns an image or PDF. It does not recover the site’s CSS palette for you: use DevTools for CSS values, or sample the resulting screenshot for displayed pixels.
For example, this cURL request captures a page to WebP; replace the target URL and provide your API key:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot tell me a website’s exact CSS hex values?
No. It shows rendered pixels, which may differ from the CSS because of effects, rendering, or color conversion. Use the live page’s styles when available.

Does an eyedropper work on a live website as well as an image?
Browser color tools can inspect colors in page styles, while an image-editor eyedropper samples pixels from an image. The former can expose CSS values; the latter reports displayed pixel color.
Does passing WCAG’s text contrast threshold make a whole palette accessible?
No. The cited criterion covers text contrast with exceptions; it does not assess every accessibility consideration.
